Follow the science!  Or not….

No End to Parallel Universes in Nutrition

How about a multiverse where nutritionists always get exactly the answer they want from their studies?

As Alpha Waymond might put it, sure.

This scenario is in fact our reality, according to a recent analysis published in The Journal of Clinical Epidemiology. Nutrition science, and particularly nutritional epidemiology, has a multiverse problem, the paper asserts, and it’s yet another reason to be very skeptical of this research.

/snip

At the heart of the multiverse problem in nutrition is a simple concept known as “analytical flexibility.” No consensus exists in nutrition science about how best to analyze data from the numerous epidemiological surveys that have appeared in the last 60 years to try to make sense of the diet-lifestyle-disease relationship. The epidemiologists have never done the necessary hard work to establish which of any number of strategies and techniques is reliably correct.

Any analytical strategy, as Zeraatkar explained in an interview, can involve hundreds, if not thousands of decisions, large and small, about how best to conduct an analysis.2 Hence, the uncertainty in the diet-health associations that these studies produce is not just about whether we can trust, for instance, that the self-reported dietary data accurately reflects what people really ate, but all the particular decision points made by the researchers doing these analyses. A different analytic technique or different decisions about how best to handle the data can produce different answers – a different multiverse of answers, in effect. Use one set of criteria, and the diet or lifestyle factor of interest will be associated with an increased risk of a particular disease; use a different set of criteria, and the reverse appears true.  How do we know which is right? Which multiverse is our reality, the one we’re living in?

/snip

One obvious implication was that researchers looking for publishable results could easily make the decisions – consciously or subconsciously – to get the results they wanted, whether or not that was the correct result.3

Well it’s going to be another fabulous day here, actually the whole week will be and I’ve been real busy. Yesterday was mowing day and I got about 90% finished before my big mower decided it was too tired to go on, (details later) so this morning I’ll get my old push mower out and finish up the yard at the farm House. Oh and my wife mowed the front yard here with her new Stihl and it looks good. Using the big mower on the hill, it doesn’t work as well since it cuts such a wide swath and leaves the grass uneven.
In any case; Life is Good.

The Left’s highway to hell is paved with all their “good intentions.” People are going to get shot and killed over the stupidity of Democratic politicians.

Real estate mogul Shawn Meaike is concerned how hard-working, well-intentioned Americans will handle squatting issues as they grow more and more desperate.

“People are going to start taking matters into their own hands. That’s what we do when there is lawlessness,” Meaike told Fox News Digital.

“Something really bad is going to happen,” he said. “Am I saying this right thing to do? No, I’m not.”

Squatting, whereby strangers move into the properties of American homeowners and refuse to leave, has quickly become part of the zeitgeist as a series of news-making stories have shocked the nation.

    1. Tedtam Avatar

Hubby and I were discussing this issue just last night. We have a house that we’re thinking about putting up for sale, and if the tenants move out, I brought up the subject of possible squatters. Hubby didn’t think it was an issue, but I told him the squatters don’t really care what part of the country it is. Then I suggested that we let Handyman move in temporarily, and move an abandoned car that we have into the driveway. That way it’ll look like someone’s there. He thought that was an excellent idea, and Handyman has lived in our vacant units while working on them already, so he’s used to it.

It’s really not difficult to have peace and order in the Public Square. They do it in Florida with decisiveness. This is from NPR after the Florida law was passed:

Florida experienced little of the violence seen elsewhere in the country last summer following Floyd’s death. But Gov. Ron DeSantis said tougher laws were needed to make sure Florida doesn’t see the kind of protests that occurred in Minneapolis, Portland, Ore., and other cities. At the bill signing Monday, DeSantis said, “If you riot, if you loot, if you harm others, particularly if you harm a law enforcement officer during one of these violent assemblies, you’re going to jail.”

The law increases penalties for protesters who block roadways or deface public monuments. It creates a new crime, “mob intimidation.” And it requires that anyone arrested at a protest be denied bail until their first court appearance, likely making for overnight jail stays.

Check out the videos of Miami protests and the police response.

Artificial Intelligence and the use of algorithms in unseen ways is a hot media topic now, but we’ve been on the case for a long time, including almost a year ago how ‘Diversity in Recruiting’ at LinkedIn Implements Feature Allowing Recruiters to Find People by Their Demographics.

You may remember our online event in July 2023, regarding Discrimination By Algorithm – the “ultimate showdown between equity and equality is going to take place at a technological level” IVIDEO at link], where we explored how bias was built in to achieve de facto racial and other quotas.

This “discrimination by algorithm” problem was the subject of an Op-Ed by Kemberlee and me in The NY Post last month, Google’s Gemini AI Is Just The Tip Of The ‘Discrimination By Algorithm’ Bias Problem:

Remember Boys N Girls don’t try this at home. https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t57/1/16/1f609.png As I mentioned earlier I was mowing the place yesterday and when I was almost finished (6 hours) my big zero turn mower decided it was just too tired to go on. The spring on the engine to transmission idler pulley broke and it threw the belt so it wasn’t going anywhere. I needed to load it up to take it to the mower shop but that would require some manual pushing to get it onto the trailer and it is dang heavy. I was by myself so I thought about using the wench on Kubota Mule to pull it on but that seemed like a lot of trouble so I hit on the idea of pushing it on with my tractor. I used a chain to get into position and then used the bucket to catch the front wheels and push it up the ramp. I carefully slid the blade under the front wheels and lifted it clear of the ramps as I pushed. The blade cradled the front wheels nicely. It all worked like a champ and only took a few minutes.

Last weekend, 10 people were shot and one little girl was murdered in Chicago.

Concurrently, Iran fired hundreds of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles at Israel. One little Bedouin girl was injured by shrapnel.

It has been over 3 months since the mayor and city council of Chicago called for an immediate cease fire in Gaza and 126 people have been murdered there.

The last time Chicago elected a Republican mayor was 1931, 93 years ago.

Melting polar ice is slowing the Earth’s rotation, with possible consequences for timekeeping

A new study found that ice loss caused by climate change is redistributing mass on the Earth enough to alter its spin.

but wait, stop the presses !!!

    CBS NEWS / March 27, 2024

Earth is spinning faster than it used to. Clocks might have to skip a second to keep up.

Earth’s changing spin is threatening to toy with our sense of time, clocks and computerized society in an unprecedented way — but only for a second.

For the first time in history, world timekeepers may have to consider subtracting a second from our clocks in a few years because the planet is rotating a tad faster than it used to. Clocks may have to skip a second — called a “negative leap second” — around 2029, a study in the journal Nature said Wednesday.

Finished making/praying my rosary, then finished cleaning my oven. I ran the self-cleaning cycle yesterday, but the racks have always been a PITA to clean. My Midwest Magic Cleaning guy uses a product called “Clean Freak” so I decided to give it a try.

It’s magic! I was able to get my racks clean with a little elbow grease and a scrubby pad. They were a lot worse than I’d thought, so I had to reapply the Clean Freak a coupla times to get through the layers of grease.

My oven is so purdy now, I almost don’t want to cook in it.

An advocacy group based in Northeastern Mexico that lobbies U.S. lawmakers has distributed and posted flyers encouraging illegal immigrants to vote for President Joe Biden in the 2024 election, according to The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project.

Why the Self-Cleaning Oven Cycle Will Destroy Your Range

We recently had the service guy come and install new high-temp burner on the stovetop. I had ordered the part, but I had a problem uninstalling the burner. It turned out too much heat had warped it.

Anyway, he told us to never use the self-cleaning setting on the oven. The internal digital controls on all stoves over the past 20 years or so were never designed to withstand the heat. He said he has seen countless ruined ranges with controls over the years fried by the intense heat from the self-cleaning cycle. The service tech has been doing this for 30 years and he tells all of his customers the same thing no matter the brand.

He added it is bad design flaw and the manufacturers continue to ignore the problem because it usually happens after the warranty expires and the customer has to, guess what, fork over the cash for a new unit.

    1. Tedtam Avatar

Our oven is a standalone, in-wall unit. No burners atop to be burned. But that’s good to know, since we have the oven/cooktop ranges in our units.

My response: Pray tell me how Israel can do that? Iran would have to not respond. Iran’s stated reason for this round of missiles was in retaliation for the bombing of that “embassy” (note quotation marks) which was Israel’s retaliation for Hezbollah missiles etc. Are we looking at a prolonged period of tit for tat reactions. CORRECTION:

The story I linked to 10:59 AM and Tedtam linked to at 12:33 PM about the Mexican NGO urging illegal aliens to vote for Biden appears to be FAKE.

There are only a few bona fide journalists out there and Bill Melugin is one of them.

Bill Melugin of Fox News has done more deep reporting on the border disaster than any other reporter on earth says it is not real:

I am extremely skeptical of this. The flier appears to be a word for word Google Translate copy & paste of a portion of the NGO’s English website, with “vote for Biden” randomly added in at the end, when it does not appear on the site. The translation is bad, then you have “bienvenidos” spelled wrong and “todos con Biden” added onto the flier with a Biden logo.

There’s plenty of controversy with some NGO’s, but this flier seems fake or doctored, even at first glance.

Side by side (bad) translation. Nothing about Biden appears on the website. It was ripped/pasted and then the Biden stuff was added at the end of it.
