The Elite War on the American Middle Class—and How to End It

A remarkable cri de couer by Christine Rosen at Commentary:

Being middle class in America used to mean something—something socially transformative, something even revolutionary. The American middle class represented a form of national social order never before seen on this earth—cultural domination not by the very rich and very educated, or the political domination either by tyrants or the mob, but by a mass of people, relatively well-to-do, who felt themselves fortunate in their circumstances. That was what made the American middle class different from the French or English bourgeoisie. Its members believed, and the country believed, that they were the nation’s backbone, its true governing class, and its moral compass.

and,

By the early-21st century, however, the cultural and political power of the middle class had begun to erode—subtly at first, then rapidly. In his memoir of his time working for President Barack Obama, David Axelrod recalled chastising Obama in 2008 for his “clinical and bloodless” discussions of the country’s vast middle and reminded him of its importance to the Democrats’ election prospects. “I talk about the middle class all the time,” Obama peevishly insisted. Axelrod disagreed and advised Obama that he could not merely “sprinkle mentions of the middle class formulaically in speeches,” as he had been doing. He had to wage “a day-in, day-out campaign on the issue.”

not to mention this,

The arbiters of culture increasingly ignore the middle to focus instead on minority groups of every stripe (the smaller and more bizarre the better), or on the tribulations of the luxury consumer. When given attention at all, the middle is treated as a bunch of exotic weirdos, despite still being the majority.

This essay is so accurate and profound I have struggled to decide on which  parts to quote.

Consider the recent cultural and political shifts experienced by the typical middle-class American, shifts dramatic enough to be experienced as whiplash by many of its members. During the Covid pandemic, for example, the majority in the middle was told to listen to elite experts and follow the dictates of the institutions those elites controlled. Most did. But as those same elites mandated harmful business and school closures (while conveniently ignoring such restrictions on their own behavior by dining at the French Laundry, as Governor Gavin Newsom did, or sending their children to private schools that remained open), middle-class Americans watched their children’s educational and emotional well-being suffer as the public schools they attended remained shuttered.

It begins in higher education as I have always maintained.  Middle class America controlled colleges and universities in this nation post WWI until the early twenty-first century when they lost it.

What, then, is to be done for the middle class?

There are practical steps that can be taken in higher education that would offer immediate relief to the middle class and restore more socioeconomic diversity to elite college campuses. First (and this is already happening), schools from elementary to high school and universities everywhere must restore standardized testing as a vetting mechanism for admission. When higher-education institutions went test-optional and when secondary schools eliminated blind testing, they effectively decoupled merit from admissions for the middle class.

this as well,

Culturally and socially, the challenge is more complicated. But it is not unresolvable: If you want to stop making the middle class feel as if their own country has turned against them, then the arbiters of culture need to stop turning against the middle class. For several years now, corporations and cultural institutions have pandered to elite values—values that, as we have seen, are not shared by most Americans and that have cost many companies the business of the majority.

A very articulate analysis of the American scene demonstrating the famous warning admonition of  Andrew Breitbart… Politics Are Downstream From Culture.

RE: The Christine Rosen headline essay

Always remember, the monarchies of Europe and beyond, Lenin, Marx, Mussolini, Mao Tse-Tung, Stalin, Pol Pot, the mullahs of Iran and every aristocracy in history feared and hated the middle class.

Each of these black-hearted devils used their enormous power to destroy the bourgeoisie even if took killing millions and millions of innocent people.

Every group that aspires to rule over others has to destroy the middle class before it destroys them.

In my view, the wise leader would do that which was best for the middle class because that would be the best for the country as a whole. When the middle class thrives, the elites that sell to them get even richer. When the middle class is punished/financially pressured, there is a much smaller pool of potential customers for the elite and they don’t make as much money.
      Not terribly complicated.

This is a pretty fascinating development. I think Tillman is on to something. Also, the Landmark Legal Foundation was founded by Mark Levin.

A legal scholar and public interest legal organization have teamed up to challenge the classified documents indictment against Donald Trump. The scholar and organization filed a March 21 brief arguing that the delegation of authority to Special Counsel Jack Smith is invalid, rendering the indictment invalid, as well.

Prof. Seth Barrett Tillman and the Landmark Legal Foundation’s brief argue Smith’s appointment is invalid because Smith exercises too much independent authority for his position as an employee.

    plus this,

Smith’s appointment furnishes him with “the full power and independent authority to exercise all investigative and prosecutorial functions of any United States Attorney.”

Tillman’s brief argues this delegation of authority goes too far because only “Officers of the United States” can hold such far-reaching authority and power and Smith is a “mere ’employee’” of the United States.

According to Tillman’s brief, an employee like Smith cannot exercise the “significant authority” of a U.S. Attorney without the supervision of an Officer of the United States.

I’d mentioned the Crawdad Festival and one of the neatest parts was the car show. They always have a car show but this one was bigger and better than most. Early on, I thought I’d spotted the winner, a 1962 VW bug but then I saw the 55 Chevy pick-up with the oak flooring in the bed BUT then there was the Studebaker Commander, 55’s, 57’s and one 56 Chevy. Nova’s Camaro’s, Mustangs and neat Odd Balls. In the end it I think the winner was the 73 IH Scout with the 266 truck engine.

As Gomer Pyle would say, “Surprise, Surprise.”

Ireland has been in turmoil over the open borders stance of the ruling elite and the public revolt has resulted in the gay immigrant prime minister resigning.

There was a protest against immigration policy in front of an old paint factory in a residential area where the government was housing aliens. There were lots of women and children present to protest, but there also were plenty of men.

Suddenly, a group of Antifa men showed up to interrupt the citizens and the men in the protest kicked down the road. As they fled, they dropped unlocked cellphones.

    • Some of the protestors dropped their mobile phones, unlocked, at the scene, along with other belongings such as driver’s licenses and UK identification
    • The protestors reviewed the content of the phones to delete any invasive content that had been recorded
    • On one phone, which seems to belong to a mainstream journalist, would appear to show a concerning level of cooperation between various media sources, NGO workers, and prominent antifa operatives in both Ireland and the UK
    • The videos of the phone’s content, widely circulating on social media, seem possibly to hold a vast quantity of insider info on the Far Left in Ireland
    • The contents are certain to be studied in detail by nationalists. Already it seems the phone numbers of maybe a majority of prominent pro-plantation activists have been revealed
    • This embarrassing physical humiliation for the Left, along with the trove of info revealed, is the final nail in the coffin of street-level leftist organising in the 26 counties. The time of “No Pasaran” has passed

Oh and the Antebellum Home tour in Eufaula was interesting, lot’s of neat old homes along US 431, most with period furnishings. Several were decked out almost in museum fashion on the first floor while the owners lived on the second and or third levels.Of course there were a lot of folks dressed for the occasion, visitors and tour guides alike.

    Spotted over yonder;

Since today is the date of the exciting total Solar eclipse that is crossing the United States from Texas all the way to the New England area, let us look back in time to a couple of solar eclipses that happened in 1831 and 1834.

This 1834 map of the United States, published by Gray and Bowen and printed in the American Almanac and Repository of Useful Knowledge in 1834 shows the path of these two eclipses. Some places were lucky enough to be in the path of both of these solar eclipses as their paths crisscrossed each other in Alabama and Georgia. The newspaper article, from the Kentucky Gazette, was published on November 29, 1834, just one day before the eclipse.

    El Gordo’s Pre-eclipse Report from San Saba;

My pre-eclipse report from San Saba. I took a quick tour from one end of town to the other, and traffic is very light since schools and other local government offices are closed. There were a few people wandering around the downtown area, but the shops are not open yet or are not planning to open at all. School parking lot and Mill Pond Park are blocked off and no vehicle entry is allowed although there were a few people walking around inside the park. Gas station and grocery store activity is light. Don’t know how all those people selling high dollar sandwiches fared, but I’m guessing they will be taking a lot home with them. Saw where Burnet is cancelling its big event citing weather forecasts calling for storms later today and advising their guests to go ahead and get out of town. Pink port-a-potties line the vacant lot which used to be the tractor place, but not a single person parked out there on that large space. Very few high clouds at this time, so it certainly should be good viewing if it does not change. My overall summary is that this is less busy day than normal and you are safe to come out of your hidey hole and mill about a little if you like. Crisis averted.

Texpat, the above commentary nails it. With big nails, no less. 🙂

This morning’s Chron has an article covering the closing of yet another high-end store near River Oaks and other well-to-do areas nearby. Several other well-known shopping places in other areas preceded in closing in the past few months. These are omens of what can come even to Texas despite our Republican government’s best efforts.

It would seem that Houston is no longer immune to the ravages of the Democrats’ socialist attempts. Gratefully, we aren’t ravaged as are other states, especially those run by west-coast and east-coast Democrats.

What to do? Just keep asking folks “Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?” That might make folks who are not thinking to start thinking.

I’m glad I got my gardening done yesterday. Didn’t get it all done, natch, but I set up two new tubs, evicted another caterpillar, moved a ladybug larvae to my garden (I don’t mind having a ladybug nursery at all), fertilized everything…so today no gardening. Of course, since the world is ending between noon and three today, it may all be for naught.

At least, that’s the forecast for the Houston area. I don’t know where the world ends at other places in the eclipse trail.

At the C&C, the first story is about a judge in Brazil is threatening Musk and X/Twitter. Think Jack Smith’s best friend kinda thing. Musk, true to his nature, isn’t backing down:

Brazil is practically sprinting toward third-world s—hole status. At which point it will catch up with the United States.

Musk, for his part, remains defiant. The billionaire tweeted that fine, he’ll publish everything the judge wants on Twitter — but also he’ll publish everything they got from the judge, which Elon said would prove the judge is the real criminal:

    Go get ’em, Elon.

Mr. C. also covers a story about a pastor’s daughter-turned-porn-actress. She had a multitude of followers on OnlyFans, and the media ran glowing story after story on her…until she closed her account and became a Christian. Now she is persona non grata, ignored except for scammers and enraged followers of her previous behavior. The point is made that similar stories follow Russell Brand and former occultist Kat von D.

But at the end of the day, in terms of its effect, it makes no difference how genuine was Nala’s conversion. Despite corporate media’s determined efforts to ignore the story — which itself is a terrific sign her conversion was real — the entire sordid adult industry, all of them, from providers to the industry’s insatiable consumers, are all well aware of what happened.

Who knows how many more people might be dragged along by Nala’s example?

The point is, at the same time the culture seems to be sprinting toward drag story hours, kindergarten pornography, and classrooms full of transgender children, this kind of thing keeps quietly happening in the background.

    So.

    And so goes the world.

Michael Knowles, traditional Catholic and pundit at the Daily Wire, had an interview with Nala. I plan on watching it later:

Nope, you’re not wrong. I remember when Handsome Son was young and in the midst of his central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) issues. For kids with CAPD, how they perceive sound is vastly different than what we experience. Balloons absolutely terrified him, for example. He used to be very disturbed when it rained. I don’t know if it was the fact that water was falling from the sky or the thunder that sometimes accompanied it. I remember dancing outside in the rain, trying to encourage him to come out with me. It took quite a bit of convincing, but my repetitions of “It’s only water, like taking a shower!” and my extended stay out in the falling water without dropping dead finally convinced him to join me. That was quite an achievement, for both of us.

Years later, we were at Wal-Mart and it was raining outside. Women were stacking themselves up at the doors. I looked at the rain and determined that it was light to medium level moisture, and Handsome Son and I made our way through the women to walk to our car. There were murmurs of “She’s going to get wet,” etc. I could hear Handsome saying out loud “It’s just water” as we made our way through the throng. I was so proud of him at that moment, and he made me chuckle a bit.

The same thing with the eclipse. We deal with darkness all the time. Every night. So, to paraphrase my son: “It’s just darkness.”

I don’t know why having a heron on my property makes me happy, but it does. And like all my lizards are named “Earl,” any heron can hold the name “Junior”.
