“Old Red”

(The Ashbel Smith Building)

In an 1881 statewide referendum, the voters of Texas chose Galveston as the location of the first state-supported university medical school.

Ten years later, the “Medical College Building” opened its doors to 23 students and 13 faculty members.

“Old Red” now sits surrounded by the UTMB complex which includes three hospitals and 70 other buildings.

The magnificent structure survived the 1900 Storm and Hurricane Ike delivered six feet of water inside.

A nascent Medical Museum is in the works on one of the floors.

/ It’s just crazy – In all of my years of poking around Galveston, I have never seen this building.

Ditto that, I missed it also but I’ll try to stop by there in one of my future Texas trips. Well we made it to Friday and it’s March 8 man time flies.

Ditto here as well. I’ve never ventured into the UTMB area though other than drive-by.

I really like the arches over the upper floor windows and it looks like there aren’t too many hard corners – almost roundish in shape of the footprint of the building.
Definitely a hit on my architectural taste-o-meter

I tried to watch the SOTU last night and I finally had to turn it off just b4 9 when Joe “The Dip$#!t” started to get heckled a bit. I can only take being lied to just so many times before my lizard brain takes over and I want to do bad things to bad people. It took me almost until 10 to calm down enough to go to bed, so I am in a sleep deficit this morning.

The reason y’all have never seen the Ashbel-Smith Building is because it has been surrounded by tall buildings and buried back in the UTMB campus. Unless you drive deep into the campus and get out and start walking around the crowded buildings, you will never see it out there on the east end of island. Even when you drive down Ferry Road to the Bolivar ferry it is not visible.

I’ve been down Harborside to the Bolivar Ferry a million times but I guess I didn’t notice it. But if I remember right all you can see around UTMB is a bunch of tail newer buildings.

It is so comforting we are being led by “experts”.

Led down the path to Perdition.

Vast swaths of the United States are at risk of running short of power as electricity-hungry data centers and clean-technology factories proliferate around the country, leaving utilities and regulators grasping for credible plans to expand the nation’s creaking power grid….

The soaring demand is touching off a scramble to try to squeeze more juice out of an aging power grid while pushing commercial customers to go to extraordinary lengths to lock down energy sources, such as building their own power plants.

“When you look at the numbers, it is staggering,” said Jason Shaw, chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commission, which regulates electricity. “It makes you scratch your head and wonder how we ended up in this situation. How were the projections that far off? This has created a challenge like we have never seen before.” ….

This is a huge crisis looming on the near horizon and these “energy experts” have just snapped out of there haze to discover we are running out of capacity rapidly.

This is something I questioned from day 1 about large-scale EV rollout. Why did these eco-weenies think it was ok to push for this before having appropriate charging infrastructure in place? I think the answer to that lies with a group of people who don’t evaluate things from an engineering perspective, but rather from a political goals perspective. IOW, yes, they really are that stupid, but they’re too arrogant to recognize their own ignorance. The world has been “breaking” for a while now, but the pace is definitely accelerating from what I notice.

About my post @ 5:22 AM and my/our travels in Texas, my wife and I finished watching Lonesome Dove the other night, it was 4, 2 hour episodes and in the first one they came upon a river and I said “that looks like the Pecos, I wonder if it is ” and my wife said that even the territory looks right. It made me proud that not only has my wife been to the Pecos she remembers the area. This made me think that my wife and I have seen more of Texas that many on the natives, my wife more than me since she made a lot of solo trips after she sold her insurance agency and sorta retired. She also made trips after she became our Neighborhood Nazi. She’s been to a few of places on my bucket list that I’ve missed. The Davis Mountains and Lost Maples comes to mind. Her and daughter even went to Canadian to a Clay Walker concert a few years ago.My wife mentioned Canadian the other day when the wildfires were raging in the panhandle. Hopefully we’ll see some more of Texas before we check out. 😉

    This is not satire.

On Wednesday, CBS Morningsfeatured KYNE Santos, a Drag Queen who teaches about mathematics on TikTok. Hosts fawned over “Math Queen” and encouraged viewers to check out Santos’ new book, “Math in Drag,” which talks about the intersection between “mathematical mysteries” and “the art of drag.”

“Yeah. You know, people think that these are two such separate worlds,” Santos told the hosts. “You know, math is all about rules and getting the right answer. Drag is art, and art has no rules. But really the book is about all the ways that they overlap and really, the higher level math is about thinking creatively and, you know, questioning rules and stereotypes.”

Host Gayle King added, “You say math and drag are marvelous, whimsical, controversial, and never boring,” before diving into talking about Santos’ TikTok page where he – decked out in his drag queen attire – talks about math in little video clips online.

I managed to make it through the entire SOTU Angry Old Man Speech and I wasn’t surprised except for the fact that he did a better job than I’d have though and like Shannon says, they must have some fine drugs they shoot him up with. But I’d bet money that they have had him on a sleep in the daytime get up at 7 PM schedule for several days.

Good. Punch back hard when necessary.

Colorado grandmother has been awarded $3.76 million in damages after a SWAT team tore apart the Denver home where she raised her three children in search of a missing iPhone.

State jurors ruled last week that Denver Police Det. Gary Staab and his supervisor Sgt. Gregory Buschy violated Ruby Johnson’s civil rights when they used a “hastily-prepared” and “misleading” warrant to raid the 78-year-old’s home, the ACLU of Colorado announced.

    plus,

In fact, the Find My app highlighted an entire area stretching about six properties and four blocks when officers zeroed in on Johnson’s address for the warrant, according to an image included in the police affidavit, which was obtained by KUSA.

Shocking body camera footage showed at least eight officers dressed in tactical gear and carrying automatic rifles jumping out of an armored vehicle and approaching Johnson, who was just wearing a black bathrobe and a bonnet, the following day.

They then proceeded to use a battering ram to get into Johnson’s garage even though she explained to them how to open the door, and broke ceiling tiles to get into her attic — standing on top of one of her brand-new dining room chairs, according to a lawsuit Johnson filed in December 2022.

A corporate media journalist, who controversially demanded that unvaccinated members of the public be taken away to concentration camps, has died at just 33 years old.

Ian Vandaelle died after being hospitalized and “declared neurologically dead,” his family revealed.

Vandaelle was a Canadian business journalist who worked as a reporter and editor at the Financial Post.

He was also previously a producer at BNN Bloomberg for over a decade.

However, he was known to many on social media for his pro-Covid vaccine posts on Twitter, now known as X.

G’morning, all! No gardening today, because of the weather. I’ve made my rosary and am listening to Salcedo rant about last night. Sounds like I made a good choice to go listen to the speaker at my church, though he spent all of his allotted time discussing the fights between sciencers and theologians about the beginnings of man instead of getting into the arguments refuting evolution. He has a web site, so I guess I’ll go there to see what he has to say. He could have summarized the whole argument history in one or two sentences.

But even that disappointment was better than getting my blood pressure up because I don’t like being lied to.

I’m in the middle of discussions over a payment issue with T-mobile. We’ve stuck with them because Hubby really appreciates/needs the personal touch by going into a store when he has phone problems. If this isn’t resolved, I’d like to consider other options for phone service. I’ve been thinking about this for some time. Do y’all have any recommendations?

Squawk said we’re going back to Visible when our sentence with T-Mobile is up – til I retired, I had a company phone – Nextel til it went away… Then ATT had a 1 cent special and our corp guys got every AMR employee a cell phone… both were kinda “meh’

I got warned about low data speeds during times of congestion. I never had a problem with that.

Coffee & Covid covered the event last night thusly:

Last night, Joe Biden yelled at Congress for an hour straight. In a sort of furious, manic reverie, Joe Biden ‘delivered’ his divisive, angry, overcooked State of the Union speech on fast mode. It wasn’t so much a coherent speech, per se, as it was a long litany of loud one-liners. Joe was outraged about everything. Especially Trump. He shouted every single sentence in all-caps at the top of his lungs in his scratchy old-man voice, and then speared it to death with a double exclamation point. Every line sounded like a made-for-media punchline to a bad, overly elaborate, political inside joke.

Distractingly, Biden often stressed the wrong parts of his sentences and slightly slurred his words, eliding each syllable like an annoyed chronic drunk weaving a super complicated story explaining how that open bottle of vodka got there to the cop who pulled him over. One wonders whether Biden’s slurring, missed syllables, and other uncharacteristic speech issues could have been side effects from the powerful cocktail of downers offsetting the twenty Adderall Biden obviously gobbled up right before the speech.

Even though Colorado has somewhat limited qualified immunity, police departments continue to indemnify officers who are found liable for damages in civil suits like this.

Raiding someone’s home as if they were some sort of cartel kingpin based on the Find My app over a stolen van is way beyond reasonable, even if a warrant was obtained without any embellishments of the alleged facts.

Any officer who files any sort of false or embellished affidavit to secure a warrant should be criminally prosecuted, then face civil penalties without any indemnification from the dept. The department should pay on top of what the officer pays, including whatever of his civil liability is after he is bankrupted.

The same applies to idiot officers that enforce a warrant on a place, object, or person that is not included in the warrant. There are way too many instances of cops raiding the wrong house when simply looking at the number on the front would have informed them.

Same applies to cops that conduct a warrantless search or entry.

While I’m at it, cops who fail to stop other cops from committing an illegal activity are just as guilty and should be treated as such.

The Georgia Train Wreck gets worse: “fruit of the poisonous tree” could derail the whole Trump trial.

Democrat Fani Willis’ legal troubles extend beyond recent revelations… A new book from Mike Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman admits that a widely misunderstood phone call, on which Willis’ political prosecution rests, was illegally recorded. That means the entire prosecution could crumble with defendants having a new avenue to challenge Democrat lawfare.

Happy to see Tedtam’s report that our illustrious President can’t use money set aside by Congress to build that border wall on something else he wants to spend it on. Not that the finding will sink into his brain for more than a minute.

Now that it is made public, attempts to hide that finding ain’t gonna work. Governor Abbott will make sure it is not hidden. California, Arizona, and New Mexico governors will know also. Will be most interesting to see what those states do to protect themselves.
