Monday “Rome has fallen” Open Comments

I’ve been wondering this for some time now:

Are we Living the Fall of Rome?

From the substack of Peter St Onge, Ph.D.

I was on financial journalist Charles Payne’s show recently talking about the progressive collapse of the once-great city of New York. Charles brought up parallels with Edward Gibbon’s classic book on the Fall of Rome.

/snip

Zooming out, late Rome is almost a perfect fit for New York. What was once the greatest engine of prosperity in the world, of history-changing innovation, a global center of culture, has now become a crumbling parody of itself.

A two-tier society with obscene wealth at the top fueled largely by parasitic finance. Set against a rapidly growing lower class living in progressive misery and insecurity.

All held up by a fading middle class who are fleeced to hold the whole thing together, paying obscene levels of taxes relative to what they earn and obeying a dizzying series of laws and mandates that only hit them: the rich buy their way out, the poor ignore laws.

What unites them is everybody knows it’s unsustainable….. None of these trillions will realistically be paid back. And sooner or later the suckers who buy that debt will make that bet.

Edward Gibbon was a well-known classicist … As a classicist, he knew the ancient theories of societal decline, including the most prominent, the “Kyklos” of Polybius (200-118 BC).

In that model, societies go through cycles of rise and decline. …

So what drove the decline for Gibbon?

Today historians focus on the symptoms of Rome’s fall, the consequences: The moral decay, the economic decline, the fall in public safety, the multiplying plagues from dysfunctional public services, the hollowed-out military that ultimately invited barbarian invasions.

But we know these well — in fact we’re living through many of them. What’s a lot more interesting is the why. Because that’s how you stop it.

And the answer, again directly from Gibbon, is threefold: end the causes. Specifically, the economic mismanagement, political corruption, and endless foreign wars.

The unending welfare, confiscatory taxes, endless foreign wars, the gutting of our military, over regulation…

The bread and circuses multiplied to distract an angry populace.

Civil unrest multiplied as classes fought over a rapidly shrinking pie.

And, above all, foreign wars were used to refocus the population on an external enemy, to drain the cities of military-age men, and to reach for the occasional glory as Rome conquered yet another far off people at Pyhrric cost in blood and treasury.

Taken together, the empire bankrupted itself. Hollowed out its economy, and used the government and war to squander what was left.

Mornin’ GJT, and the rest of the Gang… I had to rescue Shortie Dawg from  licking a toad while we were out going walkies.  I guess the only way to punctuate that lesson is to let her get one, but we’ve gotta drive a friend to the Woodlands for a doc’s appt this morning, and doing so with a ‘foaming at the toad’ Shortie Dawg doesn’t sound like much fun. So… have a blessed morning

Dang is it Autumn already? Real nice weather here, lows in the mid 60’s high’s in the high 80’s +/- 50 % humidity! Nice!!! Gonna’ be a great week. 😉

I guess the weather is nice enough that I can spend more time outside. I’m late putting some seeds in the dirt, and when I do it’ll be mostly leafy greens.

    Getting my coffee now…

Bsue, I saw (I think it was) School Reports video where he FD a batch of meatballs in mushroom sauce.  It looked like a great addition to my pantry.  I’m looking for a keto and FD friendly recipe for the sauce, and I’ll probably make my own meatballs, since most commercial products have carbs for binders.

I think I’m going to make some sauce separate from the meat, so I can have it for other dishes.  Instead of meatballs, I may just brown ground beef and make FD as a “crumble” instead of “meatballs”.

    Whaddaya think?

    PS: It may’ve been “Phil at 4800 feet”. I can’t remember…

On the radar for today:  Hubby is going to work with Handyman to build a ramp to overcome the floor height difference going into my new storage room (the old office space).

Tomorrow – eviction and make ready for Bryan.  I’m going up in the morning with them, so I can help sort through the remains of the unit.  Hubby thinks there may be some kitchen items left behind that I might be interested in.  And once all of the furniture ‘n stuff has been set outside, I’m to put a “free stuff” Craigslist ad up.  We’d rather the items go to homes that can use them than end up in a landfill.

I sure hope that the mom & kids recover and do better.

Having Handyman in Bryan doing the make ready will give me time to continue to sort and move stuff upstairs.  When that’s finished, the old blue house flooring that’s upstairs needs to be sanded and refinished.  That’ll put dust EVERYWHERE, so after that I’ll be busy removing plastic sheets and then sweeping and vacuuming every surface.

    From El Gordo over yonder;

I seldom discuss politics here, but as you may know, AG Paxton was acquitted on all the trumped up, unproved, speculative charges that the House Managers dreamed up to impeach him. Paxton is not perfect, but who among us is. This was an effort to remove a duly elected AG simply because they did not like him, and their opinion is that the will of the voters should be ignored and Paxton should be replaced with someone more to their liking, etc. Anyway, the purpose of this post is to remind you that at the next election, our District 68 representative was one of the Republicans voting to remove Paxton. David Hewitt – don’t forget. Whatever he claims about his Christian faith and conservative values can no longer be believed. Just another RINO.

    Also;

My presumption is that for those who do not vote in the Republican primaries that this is a moot point anyway. Really has nothing to do with Ken Paxton’s transgressions and/or management style – they just do not like the voters choice and are trying to find a way, any way, to get rid of him and let George P. get in. If successful, they can get rid of anyone else the voters choose that they do not like.

    AMEN!!!

Just got back in from the garden.  Refreshed one tub and put some lettuce seeds in.  Sprayed some bugs.  Refreshed the bird bath tub.  Raked some leaves for the compost pile.

During the drought, I created a “helmet” for the compost pile.  I put a layer of paper shreds on top and watered it so they’d stick together.  I had hoped that the effort would hold some moisture in, but after two months of triple digit temps and negligible digits moisture, it was a lost cause.  I broke that helmet (with some effort) and mixed the paper with the leaves so it would be a loose mixture.  There are a few kitchen scraps tossed in, too.  While the soft underbelly was exposed, I used some sky water (yay!) to provide some moisture, then covered the wet dirt with the leaves/paper mixture and watered it from the top.

Here’s hoping the earthworms are encouraged to return.

Tomorrow I’ll try to refurb another tub.

PS: I discovered that I completely missed a small melon all these weeks.  It was hiding, and when I found it today, it had split open.  I guess I’ll see what seeds I can save and if those seeds provide something edible.  I was able to harvest two melons yesterday, and cut them up for Hubby.  He was enjoying them last night.

  28. Tedtam Avatar

Oh, and I’m seeing some little ‘maters trying to get started.

I compost watered the tubs this morning, too.  I’m hoping it’ll give those baby ‘maters a boost.

You may want to check Asian markets.  All the ones I’ve been to have tons of dried mushrooms. Those people are mushroom eating fools.

Dunno how mushrooms fit into your strategery, etc. but the dried mushrooms are crispy dry. When I need to have smaller pieces for some of them, I put them between a couple layers of dish towels and beat them with a 2 qt saucepan.

And yes, I took them out of the bag.

I could try again.  I also get turmeric there pretty cheaply.

THis is a lengthy post over on Ace, but notice the last half of the post and it speaks of a 60 square mile subdivision in LIBERTY COUNTY, partially financed by George Soros, that caters to illegal alien invaders and the drug cartels.

If ABBOT were really serious about the illegal alien invasion, he would mount a Texas national guard/Texas Rangers/Liberty county sheriff’s Dept joint task force and raid the zone.  Arrest anyone who can’t provide proof of citizenship, then use priority judicial proceedings and ship them all back from whence they came.  All of them, including the wimminzes and chirrenzes.

I went to OpenSecrets.com, the benchmark nationwide database for campaign contributions, and opened the pages for Greg Abbott’s top 100 donors in 2022.

The list is here.  I don’t see Trey Harris or any Harris family members listed.  There may be some corporation involved I don’t know about.

I did see old W.T. Byler from Bellville gave $100,000, but I didn’t see anything I could easily connect to Trey Harris or his Colony Ridge barrio from Liberty County.  If he’s Abbott’s biggest donor it’s in the dark of night, in cold cash, and it would have to be in the millions.

This Colony Ridge toxic real estate disaster is not a secret by any stretch of the imagination.  Liberty County Courthouse is full of thousands of repossession orders and lawsuits against and filed by Harris and his company.  Texas law enforcement is well aware of what’s going on out there. Just do an internet search of “Trey Harris, Colony Ridge, Plum Creek, TX” and you get a lot of places to go.

This report by the MontgomeryCountyPoliceReporter.com website from 2 years ago is pretty good with a sometimes hilarious YouTube video by Wayne Dolcefino.

    I highly recommend watching it.

Republican Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw said he is ready to “tear apart” Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville over his ongoing hold on the confirmation of the Pentagon’s military nominees, Politico reported on Friday.

Tuberville has successfully blocked the confirmations of over 300 military nominees in the Senate since February out of protest of the Pentagon’s abortion policy, which funds female service members’ travel while seeking an out-of-state abortion. Crenshaw expressed his frustration with Tuberville’s blockade and feared “worsening consequences” in a text exchange with Republican allies, according to Politico.

“[I am] at a point where I’m going to tear apart (if asked) coach/Senator/non-veteran Tuberville for personally attacking service members who have spent almost 30 years serving our country,” Crenshaw said in a text exchange. “I don’t know what outcome he expected, but I’m hearing more and more that his actions are having worsening consequences.”

Somebody needs to kick Crenshaw’s ass.   Why is he threatening Senator Tuberville when it is DefSec Lloyd Austin who could solve this whole problem with the stroke of a pen ?

Debris found in search for F-35 fighter jet that went missing after pilot ejected during ‘mishap’

A U.S. fighter jet’s stealth abilities appear to be working too well, as it took authorities hours to locate a debris field after an F-35 went missing when the pilot ejected because of a “mishap.”

The debris was discovered Monday evening about two hours northeast of Joint Base Charleston, an air base in North Charleston, officials said, without providing further details.

The base had been working with Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort to “locate an F-35 that was involved in a mishap” Sunday afternoon.
