How A Crime Fighting Cowboy Became Alabama’s Only Billionaire.

Jimmy Rane took over a tiny treated lumber business and used his showman’s flair for marketing to transform it into a major player. The Yella Fella from Abbeville is now Alabama’s richest person—and the lumberyard will never be the same.

“You know what that means?”Jimmy Rane, the 76-year-old founder and CEO of Great Southern Wood Preserving, a lumber treating outfit, asks with a chuckle, picking up an axe in his Abbeville, Alabama, office and pointing at the letters GATA inscribed down its handle. “It means ‘get after their ass.’ And you’ll see that motto in every Great Southern building.”

The mantra was originally intended to fire up Georgia Southern University football fans back in the 1980s. Rane’s co-opting of the phrase is just one way the lifelong Alabama resident has tried to marry the public’s perception of his business to the South’s second-most-popular religion: college football.

Rane took over what became Great Southern in 1970, when the owners—his first wife’s parents—died in a car crash. It wasn’t much: a near-bankrupt backyard lumber treating plant with just $163,000 in sales (adjusted for inflation). But 53 years later, largely thanks to Rane’s marketing genius, Great Southern is a $2 billion (2022 revenue) company with some 1,900 employees and 15 treating facilities in 12 states. Forbes calculates that he’s worth $1.2 billion—all but $200 million of it attributable to his 100% stake in Great Southern—making him Alabama’s only living billionaire. (The state’s first billionaire, construction heiress Marguerite Harbert, dropped from the ranks in 2012 before dying three years later.)

The treated lumber industry is highly fragmented, with many privately owned operators. Even the most seasoned industry observers struggle to quantify the size of the market or any specific firm’s share. But four publicly traded companies are among its largest treaters. The biggest is Grand Rapids, Michigan–based UFP Industries, with $9.6 billion in 2022 revenue; it makes non-wood composites and packaging in addition to treating wood. Next are Montreal’s Stella-Jones, Vancouver-based Doman Building Materials and Pittsburgh’s Koppers Holdings. Like the Yella Fella, each has about $2 billion in revenue.

Great Southern has net margins in the 4% to 7% range—roughly in line with those of its public competitors. It’s a competitive business, but Great Southern has a degree of incremental purchasing power thanks to its size, says D.A. Davidson analyst Kurt Yinger. The fact that Great Southern manages to post numbers in line with its public rivals is an accomplishment given its comparative lack of ready access to capital.

Handyman just showed up and we discussed his work for today.  He’s going to start moving shelves into the old office space now that the new storage space has a floor now.  I was looking at my jars and contemplating the moving thereof, and pondered whether I had two years’ worth of food, which was my  first goal. I’ll be taking inventory as I go, which will be a huge task, but it will be good to know how much I have and decide from there what I need to do next.

Although I’m doing this partially for fun.  It’s a weird hobby, but I could be doing worse things.  If the SHTF, I’m sure my kid and his wife will be coming here.  And my son can pack it away…

I actually had this discussion with Eldest Sis recently.  She’s retired now, and her financial advisors are pushing her to convert her big chunka cash into some investments, but she’s refusing.  Her security blanket is cash. Her first marriage fell apart and she was on her own, when Mom divorced my dad and Eldest told me that Mom depended upon Eldest for some of her financial support, when she could least afford it. “Probably because I had it so hard when I was just starting out,” she said, “so I feel better knowing I have cash.”  I replied “And I remember Mom’s face when we ate.  She resented every bite we took as we ate dinner. So my security blanket is food.”

Now, Mom had good reason.  She was intentionally underfunded and we, her children, didn’t know the depth of her frustration. There was always a feeling of being financially pinched and “not enough food” (really, not enough of anything) in the house.  It wasn’t until we got older that we began to understand what she had been dealing with.  By then, though, those childhood feelings were pretty well imprinted on our little brains.

I guess that’s why I get such a satisfied feeling when I put jars on my shelf.

I do need to start rotating my stock, and working my stores into my daily menu.

    RE: OC Headline Video

I’ve always liked What’s Her Face, have watched her for years and I know her style sometimes plays a little loose with the facts, but I write it off to poetic license for a satirical commentator.  However, a serious correction is in order here.  In this video, she begins with the story of current rioting between two factions of recently immigrated Eritrean “refugees”.

For a tiny country, Israel has been extraordinarily generous in opening their doors to the Eritreans.

WHF states Binyamin Netanyahu wants to “deport the entire African population of Israel.”  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  For instance, there are now 165,00 Ethiopian Jews living as citizens in Israel.  The rescue efforts continue to this day to bring African Jewish descendants to Israel.

    A few facts to understand.

Eritreans make up the majority of the more than 30,000 African asylum-seekers in Israel.

They say they fled danger and persecution from a country known as the “North Korea of Africa” with forced lifetime military conscription in slavery-like conditions.

    and,

The nation on the Horn of Africa has one of the world’s worst human rights records, and the asylum-seekers fear death if they were to return.

Although migrants who are supporters of the Eritrean regime, and therefore not under threat of persecution, in theory do not quality for refugee status under UN guidelines, Israeli authorities do not distinguish between asylum seekers based on their political affiliations.

And there is where Israel screwed up.  They took everyone in without trying to determine who is a genuine political refugee and who is an illegal migrant looking for an economic advantage who still supports the totalitarian government in Eritrea.

Two factions exist – those who were persecuted by the Eritrean government and those loyal to the dictator’s regime.  They decided to have a huge public fight and riot during an Eritrean Independence Day celebration in the streets.  There were other Eritrean riots in countries with significant refugee populations, but Israel’s were the focus of the media, of course.

I think most Israelis have been sympathetic to the plight of genuine Eritrean refugees, but many also believe they are being used and their hospitality is taken advantage of by liars and scammers.  The problem now is being unable to tell who is who.

Final question:  Where are all the Arab nations when it comes to taking responsibility for their neighbors like the Eritreans ?  How about Saudi Arabia ?

    GAME ON ☙ Wednesday, September 13, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

Good morning, team C&C, it’s Wednesday! Today’s roundup mostly features the dramatic impeachment story, but also: Damar Hamlin news that will startle and amaze you; SADS sixteen-year-old soccer star;  SADS ex-NBA star; another literally unbelievable story about yet another perverted democrat politician; and McDonalds forced to deny self-service drinks due to widespread soda stealing.

    News:

McCarthy impeachment inquiry starts the day. McCarthy is using the Pelosi Precedent, where the Speaker can just announce the beginning of an inquiry instead of following the rules and getting a vote.  Goose, gander, etc.

It was turbo impeachment! So, that’s what Kevin McCarthy did. He just followed the Pelosi Precedent and announced the impeachment. It only takes one person now. Game on.

    “Turbo impeachment!”  /snuffle, snort

But if the Senate will certainly not convict, why go through the exercise?  Marjorie Taylor Green discusses: https://x.com/RepMTG/status/1701637744663929236

There are two compelling reasons why impeachment is necessary.

First, as Marjorie explained in the above clip, the hearings and the investigation could roll right through November 2024, giving Republicans a high-profile forum to drip out damaging information on Biden, which could arguably help with the presidential campaign.

Governor Good Hair from California is positioning himself to step in, in the event that Biden steps out of the presidential race.  Biden removing himself from the presidential race would give the Dems a chance to avoid all of his dirty laundry becoming public, since impeachment would be useless at that point.  Biden would be removing himself from office, as opposed to the legislature doing it.

But second, and maybe even more important, the impeachment inquiry turbo-charges the House’s investigative powers. For example, Biden directed the National Archives to refuse to turn over 5,400 emails he sent under his various clever pseudonyms like “Robert L. Peters.”

With impeachment powers, the National Archives must now turn those emails over to House investigators. I can’t wait to see them.

The Dems continue to whimper like little babies that this impeachment process is purely political.  Gee, where have I heard/seen that before?  Suck it up and take your medicine.  You started this wiss show.  Your party should have cleaned house and taken the Bidens out a long time ago, and impeachments were always a political exercise.  An exercise that your team blew up to massive proportions against Orange Man Bad.

    Cry me a wissing river.

Next, Childers discusses the evidence against the meat puppet:

First, the Dems are claiming that there’s no evidence of any wrong doing on Biden’s part.  Think back to the ‘no proven election fraud’ claims. Yeah, if you don’t investigate, you don’t find any evidence.  Strange, that doesn’t work when we regular tax payers violate the law.

First of all, keep in mind that during the first Trump impeachment, the only “evidence” required by democrats was some highly-sketchy testimony from a sold-out partisan witness about something Trump said on the phone that, if you twisted it just the right way, could possibly be interpreted as being improper political pressure for partisan purposes. In other words, “quid pro quo!”

Ironically, the call fueling Trump’s first impeachment discussed the exact same Biden corruption in Ukraine that is now driving Biden’s own impeachment investigation (from Epoch Times): [insert headline]

Now, Childers puts on his lawyer hat to ‘splain stuff:

It’s impossible to argue about evidence without first defining terms. So let’s start by defining what “evidence” is, under the law, since the legal standard is what applies to impeachment inquiries. …Here’s how Black’s Law Dictionary, a recognized authority that can be cited in legal memoranda, defines “evidence:”

Something, including testimony, documents, and tangible objects, that tends to prove or disprove the existence of an alleged fact; anything presented to the senses and offered to prove the existence or nonexistence of a fact.

There are different types of evidence, such as circumstantial or hearsay, but it’s all still “evidence”.

The way democrats try to confuse people is they conflate the word “evidence” with “absolute proof.” When they say “there’s no evidence,” they actually just mean “you can’t prove it.” It’s an argument from ignorance. If you asked democrats, they wouldn’t agree that bank statements, for example, are evidence, even though bank statements are used as evidence every single day.

Democrats just want to argue about what the bank statements mean.

The entities tasked with determining what the evidence means would be the legal fact finders.  In this case, that would be the judge and jury, which in an impeachment proceeding is the House of Representatives.  But the media is either playing dumb or really are ignorant:

Here’s how Republican Representative Scott Perry responded to an Establishment Media reporter demanding “evidence” of high crimes and misdemeanors. Note that the reporter pretended not to understand what “evidence” means. Perry described a bunch of evidence. Later, another representative cited the lack of prosecution of Hunter Biden for his obvious FARA violations, which is also “evidence.” Here’s the clip:  https://x.com/CollinRugg/status/1701696818915201281

The Dems are also trying to redirect the inquiry to imply that the impeachment is geared towards Hunter and not his Dad, making the impeachment useless.  Hunter may have done something wrong, but he’s not holding the office, and the R’s can’t link the father to the son’s wrongdoing.

    That’s a rubbish argument, and here’s why.

If a politician does a “favor” for a crime boss, and the crime boss pays the politician’s wife, it’s still bribery. If the crime boss pays the politician’s crackhead son on account of the favor, it’s still bribery. So, evidence that Joe Biden did a favor for a shady Ukrainian oligarch who was paying Hunter millions — for doing nothing — is also evidence that Joe Biden was bribed.

    /snip

Apart from Biden’s Bribery, what about Hunter’s Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) violations? Isn’t that just Hunter’s business? What does that have to do with President Peters?

    Everything!

In my opinion, when Biden directed his DOJ to not prosecute his sex-trafficking son who was peddling political influence and lobbying for shady oligarchs without registering, that was also “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

The Spew keeps focusing that whatever Joe did, he did because any loving father would do that for his son.  I call bullwiss on that.  But that’s a legal argument to be made during the hearings, and not an excuse to shut down the investigation.

Finally, Republicans aren’t required to already have all the evidence in order to justify starting the impeachment process, because it begins with an investigation.

… It’s about collecting all the evidence to prove the case. Maybe the DOJ has been keeping secret its wonderfully compelling reason why it never prosecuted Hunter. The DOJ can now reveal that compelling reason under oath if it wants to.

Kyle Becker, formerly of Fox News, compared the little pile that was used against Trump in his impeachments versus the steaming pile of dung evidence for Joe’s impeachment:

    image 5.png

Finally, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the historic significance of the Biden Impeachment Proceedings. Three out of the last four presidents have now faced impeachment (Clinton, Trump, and now Biden). While I agree — a hundred percent — there is more reason to impeach President Peters than maybe any other president in history, this serial impeaching is not a very healthy sign for our Republic.

We’re ultimately going to need some kind of great reset.

I think a total overhaul of both parties…but that means a majority of eligible voters would have to care about morality, ethics, and fair play.

    I’m not holding my breath.

  19. Tedtam Avatar

On another story which is somewhat amusing and “I told you so” at the same time:

“Buffalo Bills prioritize playing it safe with Hamlin.” They’re playing it safe all right. If Damar Hamlin is ever diagnosed with a vaccine injury, he’ll have a half-billion-dollar lawsuit against the NFL for forcing him to take the jab.

I hardly need to point this out, but if Hamlin is fine, there isn’t anything to “play it safe” about.

    The Daily News of Galveston

The Texas House approved a joint resolution proposing a constitutional amendment to abolish the Galveston County Treasurer’s Office, putting the issue up to statewide vote during the Nov. 7 general election, officials said Thursday.

If voters approve the amendment, Galveston County will become the 10th county in Texas to eliminate its treasurer’s office.

Eliminating the treasurer’s office and shifting its duties to other officials would save county taxpayers more than $450,000 annually, according to a fiscal analysis by the Galveston County Budget Office.

The Question of the Week is: Should the Galveston County Treasurer’s Office be abolished?

The Daily News reader survey results show 74.3% in favor of the amendment.

Childers also discusses the political/sex tapes scandal that The Couch mentioned recently.  Unbelievable.  And the public spanking of the Burbank official by a drag queen.  Let’s just say that the reactions reveal that our society isn’t completely lost.

To turn things around, I think all that people need to do is starting calling bad behavior what it is: immoral, unethical, shameful, and reprehensible. We need to stop being afraid to use words of judgment and the language of values. This might be controversial, but maybe we need more judginess, not less.

There are also a lot of kitchen ware and canned goods left behind, so Hubby wants me to come up and see if I want to bring any of it home.

When Salena Zito talks, I listen.

She has gone to Duquesne, a suburb of Pittsburgh, deep in the Rust Belt to talk to middle class black voters.

DUQUESNE — Nine years ago Leo Beatty was in his early 30s and working for U.S. Steel when president Barack Obama came to the Mon Valley plant. The visit was a post-State of the Union opportunity to sign an executive order authorizing “myRA,” a new retirement savings option for people who lacked an employer-administered account.

Mr. Beatty, then a registered Democrat who voted for Mr. Obama twice, said it was a thrill: “I really liked him then so it was exciting,” even though his presidency wasn’t always what he had expected. “I still like him. I am just not sure how much he did for the middle class Black community, or middle class white community either for that matter.”

Today Mr. Beatty is no longer a Democrat, nor after thirteen years on the job does he work for U.S. Steel. And that “myRA” program was shuttered only three years later.

Mr. Beatty voted for Joe Biden in 2020, but that has become even more of a disappointment.

    and,

Ms. Lee said locally she mostly votes Democrat, but won’t discuss her 2020 vote. “I’ll pass on that question,” she says smiling. The grandmother said she is frustrated with the Biden administration for challenging the removal of sexually explicit books in schools — so much so that she sent the president a letter about the affect these curricula are having on children.

“Oh he wrote me back alright, about immigration,” she said, throwing her hands up in the air.

    plus,

Ms. Beatty cringes at the reminder of Mr. Biden telling a Black radio host in 2020 that Black voters torn between voting for him and President Trump “ain’t Black.” “Let me put it this way, so I am not rude, the person who most represents my values wouldn’t even consider thinking that, let alone saying it out loud,” she said.

These people’s résumés read like the farthest right wing lunatics on the planet.

These were his top brass. Loyal to a fault until he went off the rails in their minds.

I was going to treadmill, but my calves – which I overstretched a few days ago – are feeling a bit..delicate…today.  And I made the mistake of laying down on the couch.

When you’re running on only a few hours’ sleep, that’s not recommended if one wants to keep being productive.

I did not oversleep taking the cheesecake out of the oven, and I need to hang up Hubby’s clothes that I ran through the wash….

I, too, thought that Soylent was a fake company.  Surely, it had to be satire.  /head spinning

There are 20 Articles. They temporarily set aside four of them because they involve accusations that are so closely connected to Federal indictments that prosecuting them n this setting would be a nightmare.

As for the 16 Articles on the current table, I think most of them are extremely broad, sometimes vague, and an embarrassment.

But if I was a juror in this case, I believe the managers have proved that Paxton grossly used the powers of his office to improperly help out a friend.

    That’s interesting uncklo.

from several clips of testimony I’ve heard on the radio I came to the opposite conclusion.

for instance they went to the fib with concerns but with 0 evidence.

not too long  ago I heard James Comey was a stand up by the book guy when he was investigating we came , we saw, he died Hillary Clinton.

he was above reproach just like Ferris Mueller and look how that turned out.

I still think the whole case was devised in da Bushes behind closed doors.

Because of the camera angle provided by the Senate, I have had to watch Sen. John Whitmire in the background for the last ten days.

Don’t you know he would much rather be campaigning against Sheila Jack Lee for the Houston Mayoral election than sitting thru an impeachment trial?

That the whistleblowers met with the FIB “with no evidence” is a load of crap promulgated by Buzbee which was a large waste of everyone’s time during this trial.

The breaking news around The Swamp is Washington Post Senior Political Columnist and Head Obnoxious Jackass in the WaPo Newsroom, David Ignatius, posted a column today saying Joe Biden is incompetent and in compos mentis to be able to serve as president.  He also said Kamala Harris was a dog-faced pony donkey and the Left needs a clean sweep fro 2024.

The White House staff are going to incite riots around the WaPo building and send arsonists to Ignatius’ home.

Because I’ve been watching Kate Jackson in “Scarecrow & Mrs. King,” the Roku channel had some recommendations for me.  So I’m watching a 70’s show called “The Rookies”.   Kate Jackson has a husband in this show who played her ex-husband in “Scarecrow”.

Man, I’m having flashbacks.  The intro music tickled some distant memory, and their computer system used punch cards.

I used punch cards my first semester in business classes, way back mmmph years ago.  I remember as a kid, my dad brought home a briefcase full of punch cards.  He must’ve dropped them at work and I remember it was well over a thousand cards.  Between all of us kids, we had those cards in order in about twenty minutes.

Oh, and I have trays prepped for Elsa’s next run.  One full tray of egg and sausage breakfast scramble, in ½ and 1 pound blocks.   One full tray of full sugar strawberry ice cream dollops.  The other two trays are mostly cheese cake that I made earlier today with a filler row of ice cream.  Elsa is cooling down and the trays are cooling down in the freezer until she’s ready.

I pulled a jar of my spaghetti meat sauce for dinner tonight.  I really don’t like what canning does to beef.  It wasn’t horrible, but I think that since I have the option now, I’m going to freeze dry it from now on.  I still have to do a taste test, but from what I’ve heard, I think it’ll taste fresher.

Oh, wow, I just saw a gas pump on the show.  OLD school pump.

    Here’s a campaign ad:

Staggering figures have revealed that over 1.2million US-born workers lost their jobs last month while the foreign-born workforce increased by nearly 700,000 – as migrants continue to flood across the border under the Biden administration.

Data from US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that between July and August, there was a staggering decrease of 1.223million native-born people in the workforce – which is a low not beaten since the jobs crash when Covid hit in April 2020.

In stark contrast almost 688,000 jobs were secured by foreign-born workers, underlining the difference in Joe Biden‘s pro-migration policies versus Donald Trump‘s tough border stance.
