Finally!  Some science I can support!

Scientists discover bacteria that can break down “forever” chemicals

Researchers have recently discovered two naturally-occurring bacteria capable of breaking down chlorinated “forever chemicals,” also known as PFAS.

Scientists specializing in chemical and environmental engineering at the University of California, Riverside have discovered two types of bacteria in the soil capable of breaking down a class of stubborn “forever chemicals,” giving hope for low-cost biological cleanup of industrial pollutants.

Assistant Professor Yujie Men and her team at the Bourns College of Engineering have found that these bacteria are able to eradicate a specific subgroup of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, particularly those that contain one or more chlorine atoms within their chemical structure. Their findings were published in the scientific journal, Nature Water.

Unhealthful forever chemicals persist in the environment for decades or much longer because of their unusually strong carbon-to-fluorine bonds. Remarkably, the UCR team found that the bacteria cleave the pollutant’s chlorine-carbon bonds, which starts a chain of reactions that destroy the forever chemical structures, rendering them harmless.

A naturally occurring bacteria that can break down pollutants sounds like good science to me.

I’m trying to piece together some part-time gigs.

I don’t think I am physically able to pull 8-9 hour days anymore.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has relinquished power of attorney to her daughter — even as she continues to serve in Congress at the age of 90, according to a report. The Democratic senator — who is the oldest member of Congress — has faced calls to resign after health complications kept her away from the Capitol for months earlier this… Read more »

Did you get hired?

I haven’t decided yet. Still exploring options. Awaiting other offers. It’s a fluid situation.

Just got off the phone with my friend from Raccoon Bend.

They had a bad fire over there today. Lost at least two homes. Fire crews from Bellville, Sealy, Cat Spring, Hempstead, Brenham, Waller, etc.

Last Thursday I spent the day traveling along a crooked line from Round Top to La Grange to Fayetteville to Columbus.

Not a single blade of green grass or weed.

Pretty scary.

Spouse is outside watering the patio plants. Sprinklers come on overnight in the yards.   Given that the house sits on almost an acre including the yards, and the sprinkler system covers most of that space it is easy to keep it watered enough that it should not catch fire should a fire break out in the neighborhood and get into… Read more »

Salt cure and pre-season beef hind leg quarter in a meat locker sounds interesting.

The salt cure was something like 3 months.  One would think that after that much time of the salt sucking the moisture out that it would be time to smoke.  Letting it fester/ferment for another 6 months at high temperatures seems like a recipe for disaster.

17 Bones I’m quite certain that the old salt curing process could be used on a leg of lamb. But there wouldn’t be much meat left after the process. Did you notice those big old hog legs had shrunk by more than 50% when they started rinsing off the salt? The whole thing looks suspiciously like Virginia Ham – which… Read more »

#18 TP:  I saw an interview linked on Ace (and I can’t remember if or where the link was in the comments) and in that news interview the lady said that the perp’s father pulled a similar stunt at that school when he was a kid and the kid watched his father get shot dead by the cops.  The current… Read more »

15 Bonecrusher The explanation is in plain sight.  It doesn’t fit the narrative in several ways. – The shooter was a former student, a Jewish attendee at the yeshiva. – He attacked and apparently tried to kill his fellow Jews. – He was a Jew who actually owned a gun, borrowed a gun or stole a gun and ammunition.  This… Read more »

I wonder if one could do this with a fat lamb instead of a pig?  I guess you could call it a lamb ham instead of a pig ham?

I spent some time in the bakery at my Kroger, but did not see a cake that appealed to me. Got a large cherry pie that I think will be a big hit at the BBQ next door. I’m still trying to recover from the lethal heat I experienced in the parking lot.

#12 TP: Perhaps this could cause Oberlin College to go bankrupt (he speculates with glee); the Gibsons could buy at a bargain and change the name to Gibson College for the antiwoke. . . .

It’s not everyday you get some laugh-out-loud good news. Quick story roundup: Oberlin College is an old, liberal arts lefty, quaint school in Ohio.  Gibson’s Bakery is a big, old retail institution in town run by four generations of Gibson’s and a tradition for Oberlin students. Six years ago, some black students stole some wine and were confronted in front… Read more »

Good Afternoon Hamsters, The heat continues this week, and I think sort of hibernating in the house is best for me.  Spouse keeps checking my blood pressure and reporting to the cardiologist’s nurse as ordered. Tomorrow morning’s reading will probably indicate I need to go to the office for further checking.  All this began about the time the heat soared… Read more »

I decided what I needed most was a nice rest before I did anything active… so I took a 3 hour nap. Now I’m getting ready to go look for a nice cake for tonight.

Where has everyone else been ????????????

re OP:

I recall reading about similar bacteria/microbes that could be used to clean up oil spills. My only concern is what could happen if these things end up where they shouldn’t, eat other similar, but useful materials, and/or mutate to eat other less-similar materials.
