Thursday Open Comments

One of the two bright spots in my very sad backyard. It looks pretty spectacular considering that it received zero watering this year. (Photo dated July 14)

On Tuesday, I went out in the cool of the afternoon (4pm) and dead headed the fading blooms. Most people are unaware that you can get a second bloom on crepe myrtles if you promptly remove the faded flower heads – unless you have a late-blooming variety.

But with this blistering, dry summer, I think I will have to start watering it to get a decent second bloom.

The neighboring Pride of Barbados also thrives in the Texas heat:

While the pride of Barbados may be somewhat attractive, once it gets in your yard it never leaves.  Those damnable noxious weeds pop up everywhere.  They are an invasive menace.

Others may have a different opinion.

Interesting. I haven’t had a problem with them being invasive. I have lost a few to hard winters, though.

The one pictured even survived the super-bad winter of a couple years ago, but I had whacked it to the ground and covered it with a sheet and a pot.

    It’s a hummingbird magnet.

I’ve never heard of the Pride of Barbados but I guarantee it’s got nothing on Wisteria, that stuff makes Kudzu look like a non-problem. It is pretty though and the Crepe Myrtle looks real good. Our Crepe Myrtles were spotty and all bloomed at different time because of the March killer freeze. We have several huge Crepe Myrtles.

I’m trying to get my Thai Basil to be an invasive plant; at least in my back yard. If nothing else it’s great for caprese salad and my white boy pho.

I like the Genovese (Italian) basil the best.  I ended up using the common sweet basil this year because the two Genovese plants I had died from too much rain.  The common sweet basil is like a weed – you can’t kill it.

The weird thing is I live in the most densely Italian populated county in America and it’s almost impossible to find the real Italian basil here.  I’d like to try the Thai basil but I’ve never seen it up here.

These cockroaches never die and never give up.

Financier George Soros is almost single-handedly bankrolling a mysterious Texas entity working to build up progressive infrastructure across the Lone Star State in attempts to elect more Democrats, records reviewed by Fox News Digital show.

According to Federal Election Commission filings released Monday, George Soros’s Democracy PAC II has provided $750,000 to the Texas Majority PAC during the year’s first half. Meanwhile, the Texas Majority PAC’s state filings show that the group raised $752,040 during that time, meaning Soros has financially propelled the group.

Texas Majority PAC has maneuvered in the shadows, and virtually no information about the group is available online. Texas incorporation records show it registered in December 2022. Its website doesn’t appear in search engines like Google but can be found at texasmajoritypac.com. Even so, there are sparse details about the entity on its site.

Just getting going, as last turned into almost wake up time before I fell asleep.  Gonna be a long day.

As for plants, I have both thai and Genovese basil in my garden.  There’s some little wasp that loves to hang out around my thai basil.

    QUIDS AND QUOS ☙ Thursday, August 3, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

    Roundup:

Good morning, C&C, it’s Thursday! Your roundup today includes: History repeats himself as Trudeau dumps mother of his children; DeSantis’ new Reedy Creek board abolishes DEI rules; Governor DeSantis to debate Governor Newsom; more Biden Bribery evidence trickles out and I summarize the high points; horrible Yale study purporting to show higher Republican excess deaths is trash; and the (Dixie) Chicks experience a sudden and unexpected tour cancellation.

Are the Dixie Chicks still around???

    News:

After the “whatever” story about the Trudeau marriage breaking up, we move on to Disney, where obviously DIE has gone to, well, die!

Unsurprisingly, the New York Times undersold the headline. In fact, according to the press release issued by the new district governors, the DEI program will be “abolished,” along with the odious practice of using race to award contracts:

    /snip

…Calling Disney’s DEI rules for the district “un-American,” new District Administrator Glenton Gilzean explained in the official statement that, “Our district will no longer participate in any attempt to divide us by race or advance the notion that we are not created equal.”

    More of this, please.

Skipping some more stuff, there’s more of the “Biden really was involved in his loser son’s business” story:

During a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, Archer explained that Rosemont Seneca involved on “helping clients navigate the U.S. regulatory environment.” Specifically, Archer said, “Understanding a regulatory environment means selling access, at the end of the day, and I think that’s how I think the most people working on Wall Street… interpret it.” [emphasis mine]

That’s how it works for the politically elite. You make your money off government. Why take the risk of inventing something when selling access is a sure thing?

    /snip

In other words, Hunter and Archer were coincidentally there to talk access with the same president Hu that Biden complained he had trouble getting away from.

Before that, in April 2010, Hunter and Archer flew to Beijing … for three days of meetings with some of China’s most powerful state-run financial institutions. By 2013, Hunter would start yet another “investment” firm, BHR Partners, including some of the Chinese officials from the April 2010 meetings.

    /snip

It was in the context of all these access meetings that that Hunter Biden put his father on speakerphone at least 20 times, according to Archer.

Because corrupt officials usually never admit they took a bribe for a political favor, the way bribery cases are normally proven is by establishing the ‘quid pro quo.’ …

If you can prove that much, it then becomes the accused official’s burden to prove that the beneficial action was not a quid-pro-quo, but was purely coincidental and had nothing at all to do with the valuable property.

So far, widely-available information shows at least two clear cases of an apparent quid-pro-quo involving White House Resident Joseph R. Biden:

    (1) Devon Archer testified that Hunter was hired onto the Burisma board for a million dollars a year because Burisma thought it would lead to the Ukraininan prosecutor would be fired. The FBI’s whistleblower told them at the time that Burisma believed it was asked by Joe Biden to pay $10M to get Viktor Shokin fired. A few days later, as Biden himself admitted on camera, Biden then pressured Ukraine’s government to fire Shokin “immediately.”

It is worth noting that democrats and Mitt Romney impeached Trump because allegedly, there was “no good reason” for Trump to ask Ukraine to investigate the Biden-Burisma connection except politics. Obviously, at this point it is clear to the meanest intelligence that President Trump had plenty of good reasons to seek the investigation.

    /snip

    (2)  Next, Hunter and Archer met with Moscow’s ex-mayor and billionaire oligarch Vladimir Yevtushenkov in New York in 2012. Emails on Hunter’s laptop describe a dinner with the ex-mayor that Joe Biden was also supposed to attend. … the billionaire wired Hunter’s Rosemont Seneca firm over $100 million for “real estate investments.”…

According to the Post, the State Department and the White House refused to explain why Yevtushenkov and Baturina are exempt from the Russia sanctions.

Finally, it’s also worth remembering that Hunter owned 50% of Metabiota, a biological research company with labs in Ukraine, which coincidentally in 2019 was working on bat coronaviruses, which Russia claims was the origin of the covid-19 pandemic.

    /snip

All Ukrainian roads lead to the Bidens’ greasy fingers. A March, 2022 Daily Mail UK article linked Metabiota to the natural gas company Burisma, regarding a ‘science project’ involving high biosafety labs in Ukraine. Not natural gas. The same article also reported that, after Hunter Biden became involved in Metabiota, the DOD grants in the millions began flowing to that company.

Hunter Biden helped secure millions for biotech research Ukraine

Can you imagine where this story would be right now if Biden were a Republican?

Man, the blast furnace is gearing up already.  Hubby came out to kiss me good morning, since he decided not to wake me up this morning. Good thing, especially when he heard it was about 5:00 a.m. when my eyes finally closed.  I may have dozed off and on during the night, but I remember seeing the clock ticking away until this morning.

So, here I am, hose in hand, and I have us move to the shade as we talk.  He starts rambling about projects he wants to do, and I’m thinking “Every minute we stand here talking about menial things, I’m losing shade.”  I finally break in and ask if we can talk about it after I finish in the garden.  He was about to head out for the day, so I said we could talk about stuff tonight.

I can usually water about 90% of my garden from the shade, with the right nozzle and the right hour.

When I was 12 to 14 years old a family friend, Clifton Fisher, had 55 acres of splendid land in Cat Spring and he let me keep my horse there.  We would ride horseback everyday in the summer after I got off work at the ranch. His place was surrounded by two ranches that were thousands of acres each and we had permission so we would ride all over creation and certain days we’d ride fences for them and repair any breaks.

He kept an old Willys Jeep out there and I got to drive it a few times.  For many years, I dreamed of finding one and restoring it.

For the record, at the time you could buy land out there for $400-500 an acre.  My mother and I talked about trying to buy 20-25 acres back then which would have been $10-13,000 total.

Adjusted for inflation, today’s price would be equal to $4,843 an acre.

It’s now listed for around $25,000 an acre in 40 to 50 acre parcels.

This whole stinking mess up at TAMU with them rolling over and handing one million bucks today to the jilted journalism dean from UT seems ridiculous and highly suspicious.

The president of TAMU resigned in the middle of this because she has been accused, and has not denied, forging a journo school official’s signature to official documents.  Banks has also denied changing all kinds of things in the incoming dean’s job offer while numerous people said she did.

Ultimately, according to the fair and balanced hyenas at the L.A. Times, it is all the fault of the white supremacist loonies at The Texas Scorecard because they exposed factual evidence about the incoming dean’s extensive history with DEI.

Now they’re hard to come by and the prices have gone through the roof. I used to see a US Marine Willys at the Pasadena Gun Show sometimes and it was a cherry. completely restored with the A/C spark plugs and shielded plug wires. Oh and a 24 volt system.
