Well, I remember Houston doing some shenanigans with their police reports, redesignating some crimes and voila! the crime rates went down.

Washington is doing the same thing…well, something similar:

Washington State closes prison then celebrates ‘one of the lowest rates of incarceration in the nation’

The department announced the closure of Larch Corrections Center in Clark County, a medium-security prison that holds 240 inmates. The closure is in response to what the DOC claims is a decreasing prison population. According to the department, despite the massive amount of crime, only 70 percent of the beds in the agency’s 12 prisons in the entire state are occupied.

DOC Secretary Cheryl Strange touted the closure, saying that the state has “one of the lowest rates of incarceration in the nation” due to having “worked diligently to lower recidivism rates create better neighbors and ensure that incarcerated individuals don’t return to us once they get out.”

I just KNOW that guy has ocean front property in Arizona that he’s trying to sell….

Washington Democrats have also been pushing to release level 3 sex offenders, deemed the “worst of the worst,” into neighborhoods without informing the residents. Their goal is to close the prison on McNeil Island. Earlier this year, Democratic Governor Jay Inslee vetoed parts of a bill that would have required tribes and communities to receive advance notice if one of these sexually violent predators is relocated into their neighborhoods.

I’ve been having way too much fun with my newest toy, the Land Shark tree/brush eater. I have the Bush Hog on the back of the Kubota and the Lane Shark on the front. I used the Bush Hog to mow all the fields last week and yesterday I trimmed up the tree lines and ditches with the Lane Shark. Not sure what I’m doing today but it’s gonna’ be hot.

The hyper-sensitive real estate brokers in the Florida Panhandle are trying to rename the Redneck Riviera as “The Hamptons of the South”.  It makes me nauseous (my 5 yr old grandson’s new favorite word).  What a bunch of pretentious losers !

Around 20 years ago, when Justin Allred started vacationing along Florida’s Scenic Highway 30A, it cost a few hundred dollars a night to rent a nice house. “The first time I visited 30A, I was 18 years old and in college and there wasn’t much,” said Allred, 37, an Alabama-based investor.

The area along Scenic Highway 30A has seen explosive growth over the past two decades, with the development of new communities with golf courses, bike trails, boutique stores and high-end restaurants. Vacation rental prices have gone up too: Earlier this summer, Allred rented Gulf Front Sanctuary, a half-acre property with a roughly 7,800-square-foot home, in Seagrove for two weeks at a cost of $114,000, including taxes and fees.

Look at the investment opportunity we all missed.  Super Dave’s vast fortune is probably from old, secret properties he bought down there decades ago.

As of July 17, the average daily rental rate in the 30A area for this summer season is $753, up 42% from $530 during the same period of time in 2019, according to travel data company Key Data Dashboard.

Finally got all my mowing done yesterday. My son borrowed my tractor to mow his 3 acres cause his mower broke down, his grass was major tall and thick and he worked the heck out of it. I was feeling bad for my baby since I had not got around to getting the maintenance done on it before he called last minute needing it. I was not going to make it do anymore work until I took care of her. Got that done Tuesday.

    DISCRETIONARY ☙ Thursday, July 20, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

    Roundup:

Good morning, C&C, and Happy Thursday! As the week rapidly draws to a close, your roundup includes: IRS whistleblower’s identity catches Congressional democrats lying again; Florida enjoys remarkable financial success, for some reason; Colorado Childrens’ Hospital halts gender surgeries; SADS double-doctor mysteries;  SADS double racing mysteries; SADS football player; SADS YouTube starlet; Russian literally blows up grain deal, along with a lot of grain; Sweden learns not to burn Korans, but Torahs are okay; strange Travis Scott pyramid story; and a funny prank video to get you moving today.

    News:

Biden testimony:  The Dems have been trying to portray the whistleblowers as disgruntled right-wingers on some kind of vendetta.  Mouth, meet foot:

Despite having been kept completely anonymous for his own protection, yesterday the whistleblower outed himself and showed the democrats lying, again. It turns out Joseph Ziegler is not a Republican opportunist. He’s a gay democrat who worked for the IRS for 13 years. He’d been investigating the Bidens since President Trump’s time in office.

“I’m a Democrat. In the last presidential election, I actually did not vote,” Ziegler told CBS. “I thought it would be irresponsible of me to do so because I didn’t want to show bias one way or the other.”

So here’s the quandary: rip apart the protected minority or the on-the-way-out embarrassment inhabiting the Oval Office?

The whistleblowers testified that every time they tried to investigate the Bidens, the investigations were shut down.  Frustrating.

I think the House Oversight Committee is playing things just right. It’s going to be nearly impossible to prove the Biden Bribery case, at least anytime before the elections. So they picked a much easier crime to prove: coverups and lopsided prosecution. The Biden DOJ can only hide behind “prosecutorial discretion” for so long.

Marjorie Taylor Green refused to give the Dems any vagueness to hide behind. First, she held up a parental warning sign before beginning her questioning.  Then she just took off.  She held up placards showing that Hunter personally paid for air fare to bring a prostitute across the country for his pleasure. While holding this up she kept repeating the Mann Act, which is transporting persons across state lines for the purpose of sex – a felony.  The same prostitute that was written off on his business expenses as a “paralegal”.  Well, pair of something. She also held up pictures of said paralegal services being rendered to Hunter, complete with strategically placed black bars.  I assume those came off of the laptop from Hell.  Or maybe even social media.  Hunter would do that, I’m sure.

I pointed out yesterday that, in the few hours that I watched, the Dems *never* tried to defend Hunter’s actions.  Instead, they focused on (1) trying to portray the hearings as political machinations for the upcoming elections, (2) trying to discredit the whistleblowers and/or their fellow committee members, or the one I found most amusing – (3) screaming outrage over the appropriation of the term “two tiered justice system”.  It seems that people of color/blacks/African-Americans (whatever the acceptable PC term is today) are the only ones allowed to experience judicial injustice.  The R’s use of the term is seen as an attempt to change the meaning of the term and thus remove the intensity of the term for future rioting.

It seems that slavery from hundreds of years ago and a few bad apples from a hundred years ago means that term is restricted only for liberals to use.

Go pound sand, I say.  If the term fits, the victims get to use it.

Good Florida News:  DeSantis and the state of Florida has paid off its debt.  Early.  And there is a budget surplus.

    Meanwhile, in D.C…….

    ****

And on the child protection front:

Local 9News Colorado ran an unintentionally encouraging story yesterday headlined, “Children’s Hospital Colorado stops providing gender-affirming surgery.”  The article’s first sentence complained, “There’s now one fewer place for young transgender people to get certain types of care in Colorado — and the change is a win for people who want to threaten them.”

More of this, please.  And with Childers’ typical sarcastic wit:

Neither 9News’ reporter nor trans activists were pleased…..it’s super clear that trans activists were madder than a mother with a burned casserole. “The precedent that they’re setting is dangerous,” warned Ruby Lopez, an advocate with OutBoulder. “My fear is that other hospitals are also going to follow suit.”

More of this, please.   But I repeat myself.

And from the Suddenly & Unexpectedly Department:

    • Sadly, a matched pair starts the list.  An oncologist and marathon runner from Florida died S&U on May 19th.  Dr. Cynthia Boyer was only 59 when the S&U Department came for her.  She had S&U recently lost her radiologist husband and fellow runner Dr. Dwayne Anderson in February, “after a brief illness”.  He was 64.  No cause of death for either one.  The S&U Dept is rather tight lipped.
    • Car racing has lost a few members, too.  Amber Jorgenson, 50, and Des Toups, 61, made the fatality list when their car didn’t stop at the finish line.  As it continued out of control, another person was hit before the vehicle crashed into a building.  At full speed.
    • Another similar story in Road and Track described the death of Erin Kelly.  Kelly was only 48, and crashed during a rally.  No details except dead at the scene.
    • A 23 year old athlete has also received his S&U pink slip: former football Hawkeyes football player Cody Ince.  This happened at home. He never made it to a hospital.  He leaves behind his fiancée, Olivia Tucker.  No details have been released.
    • Annabelle Ham was only 22, when her S&U “epileptic event” closed down her YouTube channel.  She had attended a bachelorette party in Fairhope, Alabama.  At first her family asked for privacy, but then changed their minds and reported the “epileptic event”.  “An “epileptic event” could also be described as a seizure.”  Her body was recovered from the waters of Mobile Bay.

Wasn’t there a football player who also mysteriously drowned in Florida waters, his death ascribed to a heart attack or seizure while swimming?

I guess swimming near Florida is dangerous.  SuperDave should be careful.

Prayers for the peaceful repose of all souls, and for comfort for those left behind.

I’m not sure what this next story about U.S rap artist Travis Scott’s cancelled Egyptian tour is all about, but it strangely interfaces with our normal C&C coverage topics in two places. Here’s the headline, from I24 News: “Egypt cancels Travis Scott pyramid concert claiming he is a ‘Freemason’.” The sub-headline provided more detail: “Egyptian authorities prevented the American rap sensation from performing near the Giza pyramids because he ‘performs Satanic rites during his shows’.”

Well, at least the Egyptians care.

This is the same guy whose Astroworld show in Houston resulted in multiple deaths.

… Unlike the more recent examples, Travis’s 2021 show did, as the Egyptians noted, feature occult and Satanic themes, and I’m baffled why this type of thing is considered tolerable nowadays and no longer grounds for being immediately driven out of polite society here in the United States.

The second interesting connection was that Scott’s now-cancelled Egyptian performance was intended launch his new album, “Utopia.” That is curious because, as mentioned in C&C several times over the last couple years, ‘Utopia’ was also the name of the prophetic but ultra-violent 2020 television show starring John Cusack as a genocidal maniac who engineered a fake virus followed by a cabal-led depopulation event, delivered via vaccine, intended to save the Earth’s delicate climate. …

Ironically, Utopia’s gimmick was that the cabal disclosed its plans ahead of time — in the media — through a comic-book series. If you don’t get the irony, just think about it for a second.

I vehemently disagree with Islam, but I do have to admit – they behave consistently with their beliefs.

Missed that one but about 15 years ago I looked at a property in Bid A Wee beach. Before I finish the story you need a little history of Bid A wee. It was a small community founded just after the war on a stretch of beach out in the sticks away from the main PC Beach area with was Long Beach, an area roughly from the county pier to where Thomas drive splits off. The whole place is about a half mile square with a half mile of private fenced beach. The houses were small mostly owner built 600-1000 sq feet in a subdivision (not beachfront) but you had a short walk to the beach. Think Chrystal Beach. Over the years the area grew up around it but it was a little piece of paradise in the middle of it all.

Now back to the story; Sometime about 2008 I looked at a 750 Sq Ft fixer-upper there for $80K, (most units were going for $150K-$200K). I figured that I could fix it up for about $20K and rent it out to pay for the outlandish taxes and insurance but it would be such a hassle being 700 miles away that I didn’t pull the trigger. Imagine my surprise in the spring of 2023 when I saw a new 1800 Sq Ft 2 story in Bid A Wee for $1.2 Mil! Yes it was on a tiny lot but that’s what has happened to that market.

Oh and 30A? That’s is a word used around here for status. Oh we stay on 30A. All my favorite restaurants are on 30A. Of course there are a lot of “30A” bumper stickers around.    😀

BTW; If you look at the map on Texpat’s link, we used to stay at Laguna Beach in an old Tourist Court that was built before REA brought power out to that remote stretch of beach. The units had electricity in the late 50’s but still had the original Propane refrigerators. Oh and FWIW; 30A starts at Philips Inlet so Rosemary Beach is the first main beach on that stretch. That’s not to say that the rest of old 98 (also now 30A) isn’t outrageous it’s just that 30A and Destin are the Hoity Toity places now.

    60” belly mower!

That’s a bunch, my Hustler Raptor has a 54″ deck, I started to get a 60″ but I figured that the 54 would be easier to maneuver in the yard and have less tendency to scalp the lawn. My wife sometimes uses my “El Gordo” push mower in the front yard since at 21″ it cuts better than the big Hustler. My Bush Hog is of course 6′ but it’s not very maneuverable and doesn’t cut nearly as close as a lawn mower.

This is one of the more depressing stories I’ve read lately.

It is so bizarre.  The article is cobbled together from different sources, but the endless chirping of dead battery fire/smoke alarms is the theme.

Smoke Detector Beeping and Smoke Detector Chirping refers to memes about people not changing batteries in smoke detectors in their homes once they start emitting a repeating beeping signal to indicate that they may not function properly due to low battery charge. In early 2020s, the unwillingness to change batteries in smoke detectors became a stereotype associated with Black people, prompted by a viral TikTok and a series of viral posts on Twitter.

Washington DC schools during the lockdowns:

A Westview Elementary School teacher picked up smoke alarms for her students’ families after hearing a slight beeping in the background of her Zoom classes.

The Unit 4 Community School District teacher, who wants to remain anonymous, says she gets a unique view into a student’s home life since the schools have switched to using Zoom.

She says hearing the beeping in the background was a safety concern. Sadly, it seems to go beyond just a “smoke detector” problem. It’s more about a significant number of folks struggling to manage their own well-being and that of their families. And there’s a serious consequence to this level of neglect: it’s the tragic outcome of failing to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. People are dying, unnecessarily.

“I made phone calls to families, first inquiring if they heard the beeping teachers were noticing, just to ensure it wasn’t a computer audio feedback issue,” the teacher said. “Then, if they did hear the beep, talk about what it might be and if it was the smoke alarm, they were offered alarms donated from the fire department.”

    and this,

CPSC’s Residential Fire Loss Estimates report:  Although African Americans represent 13% of the population, they represent an estimated 24% of home fire deaths and 27% of home fire injuries.

    Very interesting story.

I quoted an article here a couple of weeks ago about Paramount Global and the Wells Fargo analyst, Steve Cahall.  He wrote about the high probability Paramount Global would close up CBS News before the end of 2024.  He spoke out loud what everybody in the business knows – CBS News is a big money loser and nobody wants to buy it.  Ditto for NBC and ABC.  Cahall is a friend and former colleague of my son-in-law who says he is very sharp.

Cahall also noted recently Paramount Global is putting up for sale the huge sprawling CBS Broadcast Center and office complex that has been something of a landmark in NYC purchased by the company in 1952, the year I was born.  It covers nearly a full city square block on the Westside of Midtown Manhattan and will bring a substantial fortune on the market.

The national newscasts are very expensive to produce and the local affiliates would love to have back those prime time commercial slots and produce their own news.  Keep your eye on ABC News and know that everyone there is brushing up their resumes and tightening their budgets because their employer may not exist soon.  The whole cable business model is collapsing and for better or worse (probably worse) the industry is shifting wholesale over to subscriptions and streaming.  Nobody knows whether that’s going to be sustainable either.

The bottom line is this for us political junkies.  The demise of the broadcast network Legacy Lamestream Media is looming right around the corner.  The Right didn’t slay the dragon like we wanted to, but the creative disruption/destruction of digital technology did the job for us.  The great chaos and leveling is coming.  Who knows how it is all going to sort out ?  Some of these properties still have hefty cash flows and sly investors who buy on the cheap will milk them until they are dead.

The betting pool is who will go first – CBS News, ABC News or NBC News ???

While we’re talking about cable TV, last night I noticed the lights were out on our cable box in the study.  When I checked it, I noticed there were drops of water pooled on the vented top of box and had apparently dripped in and fried some circuits.  I was puzzled until I looked up and realized the new AC duct register was directly above in the ceiling and it has been so ridiculously humid condensation formed on the register.  I had to go and pick up a new cable box today.
