Memorial Day Monday Open Comments

Arlington National Cemetery

Austin Bay on Memorial Day 2023:

Memorial Day emerged from America’s most deadly and destructive war: the Civil War.

Agreed, social, political and moral divisions are wracking and weakening contemporary America. But no external or internal challenge quite compares to the Civil War — at least not yet.

Measured by soldiers and civilians killed in combat and by war’s derivative killers — starvation, disease and exposure — the Civil War has no rival.

Physical, economic and social destruction are more relative terms, and comparing them in different historical eras is tricky.

The Union’s best generals, Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, targeted Confederate economic productivity. They knew the South’s ability to supply its armies prolonged the war. Sherman’s vow to “make Georgia howl” expressed the strategy succinctly.

Blue and Gray armies burned farms and factories. The Confederate and border states (Kentucky, Missouri, even Maryland) suffered terrible devastation from both armies. This assertion is debatable, but I think it has merit. It took the Deep South 90 years (and the unifying effects of two world wars with international enemies) to overcome its economic backwardness, in comparison to the Yankee Northeast and Midwest.

and,

This is a Memorial Day column. Decoration Day was a Union observance. Union survivors set aside a day in May for “decorating” the graves of dead soldiers with flowers. The website usmemorialday.org notes that Southern states “refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after WWI.”

Yes, a unifying effect. After World War I the day changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

Memorial Day became a national day, a healing day of remembrance to say “thanks,” no matter an individual’s personal history.

              #####################################################################

I linked to this special 2022 Memorial Day column by Austin Bay last year at this time describing his memories of this holiday as a boy in Houston in 1950s. It certainly resonated with me.  Here is his bio.

Four days a year a special American flag flew from a tall loblolly pine in my family’s front yard.

Every Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and every Veterans Day, my father would get up early then wake me, my sisters and younger brother.

We would traipse into the front yard, yawning in Houston’s early morning humidity, in summer standing barefoot on St. Augustine grass, on Veterans Day wearing shoes in November’s cooler weather.

Then Dad would tie the flag to the rope, one of us would give the rope a pull, and the huge wall of red, white and blue cloth would rise and billow as it rose, the only sound a pulley 35 feet up the pine creaking with each tug.

Hands covered hearts and we’d salute. Two minutes later, we kids would head back to bed. Dad might get a cup of coffee then oil the lawn mower. By 10 o’clock the mower and I would be cutting grass below the flag.

Texpat – I don’t know how long she’d adopted it… I wasn’t around til the mid-50’s, so I can only speak to the time after that… Mama’s family originally came from Tennessee by way of Arkansas – and landed in South Taylor County, between Lawn and Ovalo… My Great-Grandfather must’ve homesteaded a section of land because my Grandfather and each… Read more »

Of things military, I had a most interesting incident when spouse was in grad school and I was working on the University of Wisconsin campus after I graduated with a BA and had a year of law school (decided that was not for me).  Spouse was in the UW Nuclear Physics section of the Physics Department working on his PhD.… Read more »

I went to my HOA’s Memorial Day event held every year at the pool/playground area, but it was a bust. For the first time ever, there was a live amplified band — actually pretty good guitar player and singers — but it made it impossible to just chat with neighborhood friends you hadn’t seen in a while. There was no… Read more »

Miss Adee,  it’ll always be Decoration Day to me, as well.  My grandmother’s baby brother was killed in WWI in France, before my mother was born.  He was laid to rest at what is now St Mihiel American Cemetery, in France… When I was a little kid, I asked why we always went to the cemetery to clean graves on… Read more »

Good late Afternoon, Hamsters, Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have given their all for this country to remain free, no matter how many years ago they served to do so.  My parents and spouse’s parents always referred to this as Decoration Day, and they made visits to the cemetery to place flowers at the graves of… Read more »

More on Childers’ AI introspection: Finally, I’ve resisted this idea for months, considering it fringe and kooky. But I’m being persuaded that the Book of the Revelation predicted the rise of artificial intelligence. Revelation 13:15 describes a character often called “the False Prophet” (called the ‘Second Beast’ in the Bible). The False Prophet is permitted by God to create an… Read more »

More from C&C on AI: … we are about to have a massive political battle over who controls the AI. Joe Biden’s claimed “interest” in AI is not to protect humanity from runaway machines, even though that’s the latest narrative. The truth is, the democrats want to make sure that the AI everyone uses is woke, and says the right… Read more »

Continuing with the C&C : In perhaps the most astounding feature of this AI 1.0, it can already write software. Some of you may know I used to be a professional software guy… I’ve tested it for myself, and it is true. ChatGPT can write code on demand. It can also analyze an existing, human-designed section of code and tell… Read more »

I had problems posting some of the Childers’ take on AI, so I’ll skip that part and get to this point (emphasis mine):  As an example of how AI will change everything, it’s going to obsolete digital video and photo evidence in legal cases, setting us back 100 years in the courtroom. Bad actors can already use Photoshop to alter… Read more »

It looks like Austin County finally got their Trucker Harassment & Inspection Station reopened on Interstate 10. I imagine they lost a lot of revenue during these years of the Interstate expansion project.

It’s just as well…I wasn’t good material for the military at the time. At 18/19 I had some serious issues with Authority.

Although I’m sure the Army could have flogged it out of me. 🙂

As we honor the fallen soldiers on this Memorial Day our politicians in dc and Texas continue to let the invasion from the south continue.

they are truly a disgraceful lot that defile the memory and sacrifice of those that gave their lives for American freedom and sovereignty.

As seen in my # 20, even though the draft ended in ‘73, Selective Service continued the lottery for three more years of birthdays. For my year 1955, random numbers were assigned to each birthday and if yours was between between 1 thru 95, you were considered one of 500,000 available to be called up first, from that year. Texpat: “I would go down to the federal office building in downtown Austin and register for the draft in the summer of 1970.”

Shadows in the wind… I was working on the 6th floor of the Federal Bldg in downtown Austin in 1970. US Water Resources lab, 1969-1974.

The draft ended on January 27, 1973. Happy mothers everywhere. I turned eighteen the following July. The draft law was due to expire at the end of June 1971. But Nixon decided it needed to continue and asked Congress to approve a two-year extension. In March 1973, 1974 and 1975, the Selective Service assigned draft priority numbers for all men… Read more »

#8 GJT, About the Indy 500. I somehow missed the whole dang thang. I usually try to catch at least a part of it. Apparently a serious crash 15 laps before the finish line pushed an unlikely winner up front.

Not exactly sure about all of this because I just caught the recap so your mileage may vary. 😉

Happy Memorial Day folks and let us stop to remember just what this day means. IMHO; I think it is a shame that history is being taught so poorly these days.
