Pont Valentré – Arch bridge in Cahors, FRANCE

In 1306, the consuls of the city of Cahors decide on the construction of a bridge at a place called “Valandre”, on the western part of the meander of Cahors. Two other bridges then existed at Cahors : the Vieux bridge to the south and the Neuf bridge to the east.

The first stone of the new work of art was solemnly laid in 1308 by the First Consul Géraud de Sabanac. The construction site will last nearly 70 years, giving rise to the legend according to which the devil would have brought his assistance to the architect. In 1345 one can circulate on the deck, the three towers being probably completed only around 1380, despite the crises of the Hundred Years War.

So it’s the first day of spring (Vernal Equinox) and it’s 31 degrees in south Alabama? What is wrong with this picture? And we’ll only make the mid to high 50’s today but we’ll be in the 80’s by the end of the week come on summertime.

Morning gang.  40 degrees out here at wake up and headed again for the mid 50s, but tomorrow the warm is supposed to return.  If it’s anything like yesterday out there today I’ll get out and get the yard mowed, at least the part in between the bluebonnets.  Got to start gearing up for doctor visits the remainder of the month.  Go in for an Echo on Thursday, drive to Lakeway to visit the hernia repair man next Monday, then back to MF for my normal run through dermatology, cardiology, hematology, ophthalmology, and maybe or maybe not back to urology.  Will schedule hernia repairs (more than 1) later this week hopefully.  Once I’ve run that gauntlet maybe I’ll be told to go back to SS and not come back for another year or so.  Except for hernia repairs.  Who knew that once you turn 75 you are considered a high risk patient and the doctors are not so eager to carve you up.  So get that face lift and tummy tuck while you can.

You all have a good morning out there now.  More later as it develops.

Only 45 degrees this morning, and the sun is obscured by overcast – so we are not getting the radiant heat that we got yesterday which made for such a nice day.  Maybe the sun will appear later and permit me to get out and mow my yard and otherwise mess around outside.

Well, I ate my breakfast and got my coffee a few hours ago. I got my canning in process (I should’ve picked another roast or two of the sale beef, I only have five quart jars instead of seven), washed dishes, hung some laundry, and got my first mile in.  I’m hoping to do another mile later.   Don’t want to push for two miles at one time today.  Maybe later.  I got my “Return to Tradition” podcast listened to during the beef cutting and around the sanding noise from upstairs.  Rosary said during the treadmill time. I still have my Chaplet of St. Michael and my other daily prayers, which may get said later, after canning is finished and I check out my garden.  Gotta see if critters are digging up my new tubs, but I don’t want to leave the canner until it’s finished.

So, is it still Coffee and Covid if I’m not drinking coffee????

    BLIND ☙ Monday, March 20, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

    Good morning! It’s Monday, and C&C is back on East Coast time. Your roundup today includes: Xi goes to Russia, again; U.S. refuses to consider any peace proposal in Ukraine; Biden’s sanctions shift the world toward the Russia-China axis; House Committee lists crimes it believes were committed by the Biden crime family; a “surprise witness” to testify before the New York Grand Jury; CNN admits that Biden’s multi-million-dollar Chinese payoff “looks bad;” social media hot-takes over Polish Ambassador’s off-script remarks; people’s eyeballs going crazy after taking the jabs; disgraced former Florida Surgeon General blames excess deaths on conservatism; Biden procrastinates signing covid declass bill; coffee is racist now;

And that’s the roundup, on to the news:

It seems China and Russia are cozying up even more under those totalitarian blankets, and China may be calling the shots in a Ukrainian-Russian cease-fire.  But…

The trip is rumored to be setting the stage for a proposed peace deal in Ukraine, presumably based on China’s 12-point cease-fire proposal. For example, the Wall Street Journal ran a story Friday headlined, “U.S. Seeks to Head Off Any Chinese Call for Cease-Fire in Ukraine.”

State department spokesman John Kirby responded to rumors of a cease-fire, explaining the United States’ official policy is that the only acceptable answer is more war in Ukraine. ANY call for a ceasefire, Kirby insisted, would be “unacceptable,” regardless of the terms:

Ulysses S. Grant earned the nickname “Unconditional Surrender Grant” as a brigadier general in 1862. …

Joe Biden is delusional. He thinks he’s U.S. Grant.

Actually, I don’t think that last sentence is needed.  I wonder what Biden & Co. are trying to hide so hard in Ukraine that they’d rather keep up a war and demand complete ouster of Russia, instead of allowing peace?

Would Russia uncover something?  Perhaps more proof of what they’ve been accusing the U.S. of doing already, as per biolabs, etc.??

  10. Tedtam Avatar

Next up, the U.S. has lost Africa to the Russia-China axis:

Meanwhile, as it further “isolates” Russia, the U.S. has lost Africa, pushing most of that continent to the Russia-China axis. The New York Times ran a story yesterday headlined, “A ‘New Cold War’ Looms in Africa as U.S. Pushes Against Russian Gains.”

If you look at this graphic, you can see just how “successful” the U.S. attempts to isolate Russia have been.

Let’s just say this administration is keeping up its failure:success ratio about status quo.

Suddenly and unexpectedly, most of the world’s population is either siding with or leaning toward Russia. Not only that, but the clear worldwide momentum is running away from the West and toward Russia.

  11. Tedtam Avatar

House Committee Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky) explained to reporters late last week that the Committee’s investigation is about JOE BIDEN.

    https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1637500734949187584/pu/vid/462×270/v_rtYxRjQ1lGtyt-.mp4?tag=12

So far, the Committee has collected evidence of lots of Biden crime family violations, as Chair Comer explained:

This is an investigation of JOE BIDEN… We will pursue all avenues that have long been ignored. Committee Republicans have uncovered evidence of federal crimes committed by and to the benefit of members of the President’s family. These include:
Conspiracy to Defraud the United States
    Wire Fraud
    Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud
Violations of the Foreign Agents Registrations Act
Violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
Violations of the Human Trafficking Victims Protection Act
    Tax Evasion
    Money Laundering
    Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering
… [we] will evaluate the status of Joe Biden’s relationship with his family’s foreign partners and whether he is a president who is compromised or swayed by foreign dollars or influence.

That’s a lot of crimes! If they can arrest President Trump, then they can certainly arrest the members of the Biden crime family.

Yeah, we can dream. If Hillary can survive three years of FBI dossiers in her personal closet and the massive graft of the “Clinton Foundation”, and the Bidens have survived thus far with the corruption that they immerse themselves in….I’m not holding my breath.

Too many spineless R’s, or R’s that are really D’s, and of course the D’s always protect their own, no matter how despicable the crime or proclivities.

    Next up, more jab news:

The Epoch Times ran a story Saturday headlined, “Vision Impairments in Patients After COVID-19 Vaccination, Doctors Caution Possible Risks.”

    /snip

The article begins with the unfortunate tale of Representative Mike Belcher (R-N.H.) who took his first Pfizer shot in April 2021. His eyeballs have not been the same since. Belcher has had “ocular migraines” for almost two years now.

Within 12 hours after taking the shot, Belcher’s vision became “strange.” He started noticing that the red and green color balance in his eyes would shift, and dark spots would appear in his view. Soon Belcher would be tormented by painful headaches, starting with a blinding light causing searing pain at the back of his eyes. More serious symptoms followed,…

Fortunately, with daily medication, Belcher’s migraines seem to be happening less often.

Alabama neurologist Dr. Diane Counce and ophthalmologist Dr. Lynnell Lowry…reported increased cases of their patients having weird eye problems following vaccination.

Epoch reported on a study published in November 2022, … Vaccine-induced eye complications fell into four broad categories: ocular inflammatory diseases, optic neuropathies, anterior segment conditions, and retinal conditions.

Dr. Lowry said that patients are becoming reluctant to admit they were vaccinated. “There’s a huge stigma,” Lowry said. Patients who got vaccinated and had adverse events are “almost afraid to blame it on the vaccine.”

Gee, I wonder why the patients feel a huge stigma. A stigma right in the eyeballs.

  13. Tedtam Avatar

Now, let’s blame conservatives for adverse reactions, shall we?  /spits

Marking one of the most unusual explanations of excess deaths to date, the Hill ran an op-ed yesterday headlined, “Early Deaths Are Skyrocketing: Culture Wars Are Part of the Problem.”

In other words, CONSERVATISM is causing excess deaths.

The ludicrous op-ed was penned by disgraced former Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees, whose pro-lockdown politics were so odious that DeSantis forced him out in 2021, replacing him with the terrific Dr. Joe Ladapo.

    /snip

Rivkees’ ridiculous panoptical theory revolved around: too many guns lying around (leading to suicides and school shootings), transgender kids being depressed by anti-woke politics (more suicides), kids depressed over heated arguments about masks (more suicides), kids’ stress making their parents stressed (more suicides), stigmatization of drug use making druggies depressed (more suicides), teachers getting depressed over being criticized (more suicides), states opting out of federal school surveys of kids’ sexual preferences (more suicides), and vaccine disinformation (suicide through vaccine hesitancy).

You think I’m making that up. That’s his whole excess death theory, conservative-induced suicide:

    /snip

Rivkees is a moron, and my one criticism is DeSantis waited way too long to get rid of that guy. Better late than never, though.

In that rather long list of blames, I never once saw anything about responsibility, self-accountability or self-control.

I don’t think those words are even in the lib dictionary.

    From C&C Comments:

My husband & I both had an eye exam recently. We haven’t had our usual annual exam for over 3 years. She asked us both if we had taken the covid shots. At first, the question bugged me because I couldn’t figure out why it even mattered and that maybe she was one of those pro-jab doctors and I might have to suffer through a pro-jab speech. After I answered her question (a big, fat NO to the jabs), I mustered the courage to ask her why this information was pertinent for an eye exam. She explained that she’s seen a large increase of eye problems since the rollout of the jabs and many she suspects, is the result of the jabs.

My teenage daughter was suffering from anemia last summer and the first question the hematologist asked us was, has she had an vaccinations recently? I wonder if hematologists are seeing lots of new patients too.

    ***

As an ob/gyn , I ordered more blood transfusions the last 3 years than in my whole 3O + career

Yes. Probably from excessive menstrual bleeding. I know of several young women having menstrual issues with excessive bleeding for weeks. 3 to 4 weeks. They could not get an appointment at the gynecologist for 8 weeks. Once there the doctor said we have been seeing a lot of this lately. That’s it. Nothing else. I at least bought them blood builder supplements as I told them I did not bleed like that after childbirth. It’s not right. I hoped the supplements would prevent anemia etc. Useless doctors.

A friend fully vaxxed had subsequent blood issues. Anemia. Now she has a rare? blood autoimmune disease called cold agglutination disease. Cold causes blood cells to clump. That doesn’t sound good. She hasn’t a clue. She sent me crap about the superiority of vax to natural immunity in 2021.

Loved the video! Would have loved even more if the guy had challenged the cockroach and his minion on the “600,000 covid deaths” but that nobody died of the flu last year. Really. Just a missed opportunity to give the cockroach an even bigger middle finger.

Plus, a huge number died because they were denied early treatment in order to push the shots instead!! Dr. Peter McCullough estimates a huge majority (85% perhaps, don’t remember the exact figure) of those who died in hospitals could have been saved with the suppressed early treatment meds.

Got down to 35 here this morning around 6 and have now made it to 56.  Expect to rattle around in the 50s today since we’ve had overcast since we got up this morning.  The breeze has picked up a bit, and more live oak blossoms have dropped.  The pecans only have buds and still look like skeletons amongst the other trees now showing leaves.

Now we feel right about waiting to plant flowers in the empty beds, as we could have easily been down to 32 overnight.  Bet the nursery near us had a wild time covering their plants last night or bringing them into shelter in the greenhouse.

Preparing for another worm delivery this week.  Built a second worm bin out of plastic buckets, so I’ll be running 2 buckets side by side basically in an effort to develop a larger population.  B watching the worms grown in the worm farm while I’m watching the plants grow in the garden farm.  I scored a crate full of rotten produce at the grocery store, so that was a lucky stroke.  I can freeze it and feed it to the worms as needed.  Mostly just some kind of lettuce that nobody wants, but also some grapes, tomatoes, cucumber and assorted greens.  Had trouble fitting it all into the refrig, but I don’t want it stinking up the house and hatching gnats and stuff.  I could melt it all down in the blender, but think I’ll do that later if I need to.  Hard to judge how often and how much to feed them, but I suspect they will figure out a way to let me know when it’s feeding time, and too much will begin to smell they tell me on YT.  If you want to know what is going on in the world, go watch the Economic Ninja on YT.  He’s been pretty hopped up about the bank failure stories and expands on those in both Europe and the US.  And no one else will tell you that the BRIIC nations are ready to take on the US as the world’s economic leader and provider of the world’s trading currency.  And that Mexico is considering joining them – our largest trading partner seeing greener pastures elsewhere.  Amazing, and entirely plausible as it stands right now.  Those overpriced precious metals that I lost in that boating accident years ago might become worth something again one day.

I told him that given all the crap going on with conventional banks and the repercussions in the stock market, we were grateful that we had what we felt was a more secure place to put it.  We lost half of our retirement funds in the stock market before, when it tanked bigly.

As I told him, “What you do makes a difference in people’s lives.  It’s important.”  I also told him that we understood the problems with running your own company: the stress, the risk, the personal sacrifices, the effort, the hours… etc.

I have a lovely memento of my dad’s mom who came to the US from Ireland as an 8-year-old with her family.  She was a horse lover, and maybe I got some of my love of horses from her. She was also an artist (self-taught), and one of her three sons was also an artist.  I have her oil painting of three horses drinking from a water tank that must have been of the type used in Ireland.  It is so well done that you can almost see them breathing.

Another relic from her kitchen is a wooden spoon for cooking.  It is a bit over 15.5″ long, and the spoon end is about 4.5″.   Have no idea what kind of wood it is, but it sure is dense and heavy enough to be a formidable weapon if needed to knock out a crook in one blow to the head or elsewhere.   It had been put away out of sight for quite some time in the kitchen when I found it again and thought it should be seen.  Looking for a place to hang it in the kitchen, maybe with a bow around it.

I also have her wedding ring that is too small for my fingers now, so perhaps I should have a jeweler make a pendant out of it.  Once upon a time it could fit my ring finger, sigh.

#24 – I figure I gan get the worms up to a level to make compost for the garden.  Then I can grow stuff in the garden to feed the worms.  That’s about as far as I’ve gotten in the planning and experimentation stage.

I found the YT channel “Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy” some time ago, and she (Robbie) was the one who inspired me to start the “compost in place” method of gardening.  Your idea of worms->compost->worms is how she gardens.  As she says, in Nature stuff falls on the ground and is composted where it falls, so why worry with composting in a pile and then trucking it around a garden?  The plants will send their roots into the composted and uncomposted materials and take what they need.  She has a bucket (or two, or three) that she keeps with her as she prunes, trims, and cleans out her garden, and it all goes into a tub or bucket to make a new home for more plants.  The used dirt gets mixed with the new stuff, the worms find her bins or get transferred with the old dirt, and the cycle starts all over again.

For the most part, it’s working for me.  My problems are varmints digging into my tubs to get to the banana peels or cabbage leftovers that they smell buried inside the tubs.  That, or ants who follow the aroma to a food source.  She uses tulle (fine nylon netting) to discourage deer, raccoons, squirrels, rats, etc.  She claims the smaller varmints don’t like the feel of the netting in their claws and don’t try too hard to invade the plant’s personal space.  The deer don’t like the feel of the netting in their mouths, etc.

I’m trying to fine tune the netting thing.  Her latest excitement is using irrigation tubing to create arches, connect sticks, to make either netting frames or trellises for plants to climb up.  It’s cheap enough and flexible enough to do the things for which she wants to use it.

If I can start getting the rotted produce from the grocery store, the coffee grounds from the TOK or its alternate, all the sale flyers that get delivered, and the Amazon boxes cut up, I can feed quite a few worms.  If I get any veges out of the garden, particularly yellow squash and cherry tomatoes, I should be able to keep them rolling this year.  And I should be able to do all that using nothing but a couple of buckets that I had around here to make worm bins.  And I’m able to do it all inside.  I might have to go outside to clean out the compost, but that’s not likely to happen until this fall at the earliest.  So temperature variation, ease of moisture maintenance and feeding should be very easy – and if I do start to get an odor, that means that I’m doing something wrong.  I’m doing this the cheapest and easiest way possible I think.  The candy factory here sets out food grade buckets and lids for the taking, so I do need to go by there and see if they might have a couple of extras available.  I’ve just about got everything planted that there is room for.  I’ve still got a few bedding plants, squash, melons, tomatoes, and peppers that I’ll give away this week if I can.

I’ve been feeding a stray cat that showed up a week ago, a gray and white, very cautious, but sure likes the chow here. Not sure if it is boy or girl. I’m calling it Billy or maybe Billie. It just had a close call in the back yard. I put out a bowl of food for B, and had seeds on the ground on the patio 10 feet away for a couple of pigeons, then I just watched from the patio windows. When B finished, he was licking his paws clean, when suddenly a huge tan cat cleared the fence from the driveway and chased B behind the garage. By the time I got outside and back there, no sign of either one. But 5 minutes later, B was back in the yard and finishing up his paw licking. In that brief view, the mean one looked like Evil Cat, who fathered Mama Gypsy’s kittens 7 years ago.

The whole neighborhood hated EC, and I hadn’t seen him since we adopted his son Lynx, and later on, his son Matsuo. Tonight, I soon found him back on the old deck, and went out with a broom, but he was gone by the time I got outside. I got a better look at him, it isn’t EC, but I guess it could be another offspring.

There’s an Aggie joke in here somewhere.

Two men are on opposite sides of the river. The first man shouts, “How do I get to the other side of the river?” The other man yells, “You ARE on the other side of the river.”

The Katy Freeway was completely rebuilt in five years.

I remember that and thought it was unbelievable. Didn’t they add 6 lanes plus a HOV AND a Toll lane?

The whole neighborhood hated [Evil Cat],

I’ll be glad when they invent an accurate, wireless Taser. I’m getting really tired of muddy cat prints all over my hood, windshield, and roof.

FWIW; I was on the Gulf Freeway just last month and guess what? Still under construction. 😀

Edd Hendee, Bettencourt, and someone who I have forgotten, deserve all the credit for shoving that Katy Freeway rebuild through and quickly.

Hendee’s livelihood was on the line with the I-10 rebuild. As he was wont to do, Edd went to work figuring out how to get it done as fast as possible.

There were unheard-of early completion incentives in every single contract.

To this day I have no idea how they pulled it off.

If I ever get to meet him again, over a drink or two, I will ask him for the full story.

But only after he tells the full story of the plane crash.

Edd Hendee’s plane crash – The Doofus at the airport put Jet A fuel in the tanks instead of 100LL.

Other news – I’m going to bed early.  Don’t know why, just feel like it.  Nite nite you all.

Yep. Everyone knows that part of the story.

Cornyn was instrumental in getting I-10 done quickly.

Maybe the last worthwhile thing he did.

Speaking of plane crashes, just watched the new to me Lynyrd Skynyrd documentary “If I Leave Here Tomorrow.” Sad.
