Catching up and if you missed Shannon’s #46 last night: “The Preachy Misery of the Enlightened Class” be sure to go back and check it out and RTWDT

If the Wheelers were alive today — and they very much are, still deploring right-wing school boards, still quoting from The Guardian, still cultivating their inner-lives while grubbing for corporate paychecks in the city – one can easily picture the signs stuck in their lawn and the icons on their social media. Nothing material has changed, and very little has changed rhetorically. In the same way the Wheelers tut-tut about the suburbs while remaining ensconced behind their hedges, the class that most keenly despises its own privilege still indulges its greatest privilege of all: forcing us to hearken to what it thinks. It’s almost as though the effect of endless self-criticism is boundless self-satisfaction and inertia. But how can this be? It violates cultural law! Aren’t students taught in the very schools and colleges which grant this thoughtful class credentials – credentials which in its stories about itself usually prove to be tragically unfulfilling – that serious art fosters critical self-knowledge and critical self-knowledge fosters change?

Folks, we have a paradox on our hands, and not just any old paradox. A paradox concerning a social class which deeply believes that its learning and sensitivity have equipped it to handle paradox at levels that its supposed inferiors can’t comprehend. Democracy can be installed abroad by troops. It’s fine to fly private jets across an ocean so long as they land at a conference on climate change. The patriarchy is best dismantled by male politicians from dynastic families. To lesser minds, these are instances of hypocrisy, but to the class that has managed the rare feat of arrogantly wielding its own influence to solve the great problems wrought by its past influence, hypocrisy, practiced correctly, by the right people, is the dialectical motor of true progress. To eager readers of New Yorker fiction about the superficial, frigid lives of readers of the New Yorker, it takes a thief to catch a thief, much as it takes opaque intelligence agencies to guarantee an open society. And huge corporations to rein in capitalism. And on and on and on and on. Like a vintage Carly Simon album abhorring the leisure-class depressives whose children helped turn her records into hits.

Time for my coffee and the C&C.  I’m trying coconut milk instead of cream, to get some more MCT’s and stuff.  I ordered some powdered c-milk, but it has an odd flavor to it.  Probably part of the drying process.  Gonna see if I can acquire a taste for it.  It’s part of my dry-stuff-on-the-pantry-shelf regimen.  Speaking of dry stuff, I’m going to mass at 7:00 pm tonight to get my ashes for Lent.  It’ll be a solemn high mass, so I’ll probably bring my back brace.

I pray that this Lenten season brings everyone on the Couch closer to God, fills us with the Spirit, and increases our faith.

     HEARTBROKEN ☙ Wednesday, February 22, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

Good morning, C&C, it’s Wednesday! Today’s roundup includes: the Times publishes a shocking op-ed that might be illegal; Republican senators object to Biden’s plan to sign WHO pandemic accords; a Project Veritas mini-roundup; Erin Brockovich tweets support for East Palestine moms; and A woke public health expert locks down her Twitter account.

    On to the news:

The “shocking” headline from the NYT referenced above is “The Mask Mandates Did Nothing. Will Any Lessons Be Learned”?

Like, don’t be sheeple?  Oh, did say that out loud?

[W]hen it comes to the population-level benefits of masking, the verdict is in: Mask mandates were a bust. Those skeptics who were furiously mocked as cranks and occasionally censored as “misinformers” for opposing mandates were right. The mainstream experts and pundits who supported mandates were wrong. In a better world, it would behoove the latter group to acknowledge their error, along with its considerable physical, psychological, pedagogical and political costs.

That’s super-nice to hear, especially after what we’ve been through, but Stephens is not very optimistic that we will ever get our well-deserved apologies:

[T]he people who had the courage to say as much deserved to be listened to, not treated with contempt. They may not ever get the apology they deserve, but vindication ought to be enough.

I don’t know. I’m not sure vindication IS enough. I’m thinking some people and institutions need to be held accountable for their “errors.” How about you?

Maybe the mask Karens will stand down now.  /snuffle, snort!

Now, on to Biden trying to make us give up our sovereignty [emphasis mine]:

NTD News ran a hopeful story yesterday headlined, “Republicans Push Back Against Accord Giving WHO Power Over US Pandemic Response.” Meanwhile, corporate media is completely ignoring the story.

The story is that Joe Biden is about to sign a WHO pandemic response “accord” that would give the CDC authority to declare health emergencies and issue binding mandates for all 194 member countries. Mandates like lockdowns, vaccines and medical treatments, disinformation management, and so forth. So this week, seventeen Republican senators filed a bill requiring the “Accord” be approved the same as if it were a treaty, requiring approval by two-thirds of the Senate.

Unfortunately, it’s not going anywhere. First of all, Biden WILL sign the WHO accord; there’s no legislature process that can stop him. It’s an “emergency.” Second, the accord is specifically drafted to evade the U.S.’s treaty approval process. It purports to take effect immediately on a “provisional” basis regardless of whether the Senate approves it or not. Under the accord, the WHO would have complete authority to say what is and isn’t a pandemic. So goofy political movements like climate change or equity could, and probably will, conceivably apply.

This is wissing scary.  Some virtuous climate change priests and priestesses overseas can dictate our freedoms.  This method of bypassing Senate treaty protocol has become more popular over the years, as the Executive Branch has fought against its Constitutional constraints.

Under the U.S. Constitution, states have jurisdiction over health policy, as we saw play out during the covid pandemic. But the WHO Pandemic Accord would bring health policy under the jurisdiction of the federal government whenever the WHO declares a pandemic. In that case, states like Florida would not be able to make their own pandemic policy — everyone would have to follow the same WHO protocols.

WHO can begin dictating rules as per a one world governmental force.  Childers brings some legal analysis:

All of that said, it is not at all clear that Biden has the Constitutional authority to execute the WHO Pandemic Accord. I haven’t done the research, but I doubt that either of the two cases previously upheld by the Supreme Court dealt with Executive Agreements affecting every man, woman, and child in the United States.

… I could see the Court possibly agreeing with an Executive Agreement binding an executive agency, or binding something the Executive Branch has control over. But this seems like a higher level. After all, what’s the point of “advise and consent” if the President can just unilaterally agree to whatever he thinks best?

You can count on there being a lawsuit filed against the Accord, probably brought by one or more State Solicitors General, since States clearly have standing to oppose this. What’s less clear is whether courts will agree the matter is ripe for adjudication before the WHO actually declares a pandemic and tries to use the Accord.

So stand by. Anything like this must be resolved in the courts. Still, I applaud what the Senators are doing; if nothing else, it creates a legislative record that Congress objected to Biden’s decisions.

Next up is Project Veritas news:

    1. The board didn’t meet, as per their announcement
    2. Loyal investigators told PV they’d quit unless the board resigned
    3. PV former board chairman also called for the current board to resign
    4. A “high net worth” donor has publicly called the story of her abuse a lie.

    Rasmussen raised a good point:

There are actually two great points here. First, the fact that PV was independently audited — and the auditors never complained. So, in trying to score points off James O’Keefe, the Board just publicly accused itself (Project Veritas) of tricking its auditors. Second, the Board’s airing of its public grievances against O’Keefe opened the company up to potential liability, since they are claiming they — the company — have been misusing donor funds.

You can’t shove this cat back in the bag. It will be very hard for Project Veritas to defend a lawsuit based on something that the Board claimed was a fact. What will they offer in defense? That they didn’t mean it? They were wrong? They were only bluffing? But they’re doomed, either way: If they disavow their allegations to avoid a lawsuit from donors, then they invite a lawsuit from O’Keefe for defamation.

It wasn’t smart, to put it mildly. The board members need to resign before they do any MORE damage.

Childers points out further legal issues for the board.  The hole they have dug – and continue digging – is deep and dark and getting deeper and darker.  Childers is of the opinion that these board members should run for the hills.  Far, fast, and not looking back.

The forecast for the next several days show spring like temps continuing, and despite my best efforts, my roses in pots are budding out vigorously.  So I decided to go ahead and put a little fertilizer in them to keep them in energy to keep growing.  At this stage of the game, I think I can cover them up with a tarp if it looks like we will be getting a hard freeze between now and the middle of April.  I’m opening up one side of the greenhouse, and while the winds are calm right now, they are expected to pick up to 30+ as the day goes on.  I’ll keep all the young seedlings inside the tent and zip it back up if I need to keep the wind away.

The hedges were trimmed back and have absolutely no leaves on them, but I went ahead and put a little fertilizer on them as well.  These near 80 degree days for the next couple of weeks should permit them to put out some buds if they are going to survive.  When I trimmed the tops the underneath stems there is green in there, so hopefully they will begin to respond.  I did not cover them up for the big freeze in December when it did not get above freezing for a few days, that that was tougher on them than I thought it would be.  Next time they get covered up too, if they survive.

    Good question.

I tend to agree with lawyer Childers on this regarding whether the SCOTUS would rule on the President’s scope of authority.  They have recently chosen to side with the executive when the EOs were confined to healthcare workers, military members or airline pilots, specific groups of professional occupations.  Sweeping, all inclusive mandates affecting every single man, woman and child is very different.  I think SCOTUS would take a hard look.

The group, to use an oft-abused term correctly, was diverse—Jews and Catholics and evangelicals, young and old, university professors and professional musicians, with little in common save for our shared belief that faith, family, and nation ought to be the building blocks of a happy, fruitful life.

Maybe it was the spirited conversation, or maybe just the spirits served liberally throughout the evening, but at some point I turned to my friends, raised my glass, and made a toast. “Mazal tov,” I said. “You’re all Jews now.”

I discovered the website, Grammarly.com, years ago and used it occasionally over the years.  I haven’t been there in a while, but this writer, a regular user, reveals artificial intelligence has invaded the site.

Some of us also use Grammarly. And lately, Grammarly has either been bugging out or is staging a quiet revolution. For example, I wrote a piece this morning that mentioned PragerU. I had a five-minute keyboard fight with Grammarly trying to convince it that I meant PragerU, not PrayerU. Now, Dennis Prager is a devout Jew and is certainly in favor of prayer, but PrayerU is not the name of the platform.

And then there is the constant battle with Grammarly over what I meant versus what it thought I meant. There have been more than a few occasions in which I didn’t know what the hell Grammarly was talking about. The thing is either broken or I need to download it again. And Grammarly doesn’t give a rip about style. Or apparently subject matter. Which is something that Razib Khan learned the other day:

grammarly (which i pay for) keeps trying to make me change “slaves” to “enslaved people.” it says that slaves is dehumanizing. but i’m actually writing about how vikings treated their slaves like animals and property. perhaps slaves IS the word to capture what was going on…

My point in bring this up is embedding AI into every corner of the internet is a disaster.  Microsoft has been experimenting with it in their Bing search engine and it’s not working very well.  Observers have warned using AI in this way will end up destroying search engines altogether.  It’s a way of removing human intelligence and installing artificial stupidity.  It’s silly.  I’m renaming it Artificial Silly Stupidity…ASS.

On another related yet astonishing note of which I have been unaware:

    November 23, 2021

A $200 million investment round announced last week by popular grammar checking tool Grammarly didn’t just catapult the company’s value to $13 billion, but minted billionaires out of two of its founders: Max Lytvyn and Alex Shevchenko. The Ukrainian-born entrepreneurs, who started the automated writing assistant in 2009 with the help of programmer Dmytro Lider, are now worth at least $4 billion each thanks to the recent funding, Forbes estimates.

About 22% of Grammarly is owned by the investors involved in its two funding rounds in 2019 and 2021, according to data collected by Pitchbook. Meanwhile, Lider, the third co-founder,  holds onto a stake of just 1%, a company spokesperson previously told Forbes Ukraine, a licensed edition of Forbes. That leaves Lytvyn and Shevchenko with an estimated 35% each of Grammarly’s equity, worth roughly $4 billion apiece after taking into account Forbes’ discount for private companies. A source familiar with the business confirmed these numbers.

Poor Dmytro Lider with only 1% of the stock ended up with a mere $114,285,714 while these three guys emigrated from Ukraine and English wasn’t even their first language.

    Sheesh.

I asked a docent at the Holocaust Museum why Jews were always being vilified.  Whether this is true or not, this is how he explained it to me, simplified:

Jews lived, physically and metaphorically, between the Muslims of the Middle East and Christians in Europe.

Jews were middlemen in trade between the two groups.

Jews made a lot of money doing so.

Muslims were taking over the Middle East and parts of Europe.

Kings needed to make war, needed money.

    Kings borrowed money from Jews.

    Kings waged war on Muslims.

Kings didn’t want to pay back money, began fomenting hate against Jews.

Muslims were wissed off that Jews helped Christians, ratcheted up their hate against Jews.

And that, dear friends, brings us to today’s anti-Semitism, as we live in the ripples of the past.

A million articles and essays, thousands of books and countless speeches and no one has ever completely explained the irrational, illogical persistent hatred of Jews.  I’ll just offer a couple of my thoughts on the subject.

The docent listed some of the reasons cited by many.  Remember, the Roman Catholic Church for centuries prohibited usury so the courts of royalty would hire Jews to manage the monies of their kingdoms.  The same thing occurred in Islam.  Jews could charge and receive interest on loans and were well paid for their skills while at the same time Jews could not own property or most businesses throughout the Dark and Middle Ages.  Jews would pool their assets and loan money to rulers, kings and queens and when drought and famine hit, they would accuse the Jews of false crimes and slaughter them to avoid having to pay the loans.  This is undoubtedly the source of the old trope about Jews being unscrupulous money mongers and dishonest money-lenders.  Jews were educated and literate in those eras, rare skills then, but something we take for granted today.

Something not often mentioned is that Jews were ordered by God to teach their children to read and write to learn the Torah and the Talmud.  Literacy was highly valued and mandatory particularly among Jewish males  throughout the Middle East, Europe and Russia long before literacy was common among others.  People were always suspicious of Jews because they could read and write Torah scrolls when only priests, monks and the wealthiest were literate.  Christians were at the mercy of their clerics because there were only bibles in Latin in the churches and none to read anyway.

It wasn’t until Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press and began printing biblical text and Martin Luther translated the Bible from Latin to German that the masses began to demand to learn to read.  His translation quickly inspired the first English translation.

Prior to these two seminal events in the mid 1400s to mid 1500s, virtually all of the peoples in Europe and Russia had depended on priests and clerics to tell them what the Bible said.  Once there were bibles, schools and tutors began appearing and in a relatively short amount of time common people were self educating and interpreting biblical literature for themselves.  Unfortunately, Martin Luther had thought early on his rebellion against the Vatican would attract Jews to his version of Christianity and he approached Jewish leaders.  He was rebuffed and didn’t take it well.  Luther was soon denouncing Jews, demanding their expulsion or death and synagogues be burned to the ground.  Luther’s hostility for Jews, Roman Catholics and non-trinitarians became embedded in German culture for centuries.  Historians and others believe the Martin Luther inflammatory rhetoric contributed to the eventual disastrous rise of open anti-Semitism and the Nazi Party.  ELCA Lutherans have apologized for Luther’s hatred of Jews.  It just took them 450 years.

Back in the 1980s, I went to a wedding between a Lutheran boy and a Catholic girl in the large old Catholic Church and compound at Frydek, Texas.  Catholics on the right and Lutherans on the left packed tight as sardines.  It was pretty tense in there and I wasn’t sure if there was going to be a brawl before the service was over.

Got some errands run this morning, had a late lunch and a short but pleasant nap, then got some debris bagged up off the driveway and into the CoH trash bin for tomorrow.

I’ve gotten hooked on the “Patty Mayo” series on Watch| Facebook. I thought at first that Patty was the woman operating the camera, but Patty is a man named Patrick. These 25-30 minute videos show bounty hunters locating criminals who have skipped out on their bonds. The videos have been available on YouTube and some other places since 2017, but I like ’em on Watch | Facebook where there is some variety in the themes.

Tedtam take it easy. I even thought to myself yesterday that your treadmill time seemed like you were pushing it.

By variety in themes, I think I’ve watched ALL of theflightchannel, mostly featuring plane disasters. There is another plane disaster channel, but I’ve forgotten the name of it. I can also just take total pot-luck with most anything in the Watch | Facebook area.

We’ve had a tragedy in the garden department. Since early January, the wife has been growing seedlings in those little peat pods. They are in covered plastic trays which sit on a special heating pad.

She transferred the bulk of those trays from a rack in the kitchen to a shelf on the back porch. She then covered the entire thing in plastic. The wind caught it and dumped the entire shelf late last night. She thought she could salvage some of the seedlings this evening after work. Unfortunately the dogs saw the opportunity to spread the dirt and seedlings around so they could lay on top of all it. There is nothing much left to salvage. 🙁

Younger boy is supposed to start on his Eagle project this Saturday. Many volunteers are lined up already. His project will install a butterfly garden at the synagogue where his friend that died of cancer attended.

A friend asked if we scheduled the “Call Before You Dig”. Nope. To me this falls under landscaping with holes no more than 6″ – 8″ deep for plants/shrubs. However, the wife is all worried that we’ll have to cancel because the likelihood of calling tomorrow morning and getting it marked before Saturday morning is probably slim to none.

I’m all for just visually locating where the power and gas go into the building and make a judgment call.

#59 – Now that is tragic.  A couple of years ago I was harvesting bluebonnet seeds into a Styrofoam cup.  Timing is critical as you want the seeds to be ripe but not to have exploded and scattered yet.  I’ve been trying to start a large bluebonnet patch out back that I can see and enjoy from the patio door.  And I did not want to take all the seeds because I wanted them to come up next year in the same spot.  Anyway, I had my daily harvest done and set the cup down on my step to pick something up, and the wind blew the cup away and scattered my seeds all over the yard.  So, I did not get to plant as many seeds out back as I wanted to.  Then it was a dry year, and very few came up out back anyway – but the part by the front door where the wind scattered the seeds was loaded.

I don’t think your son is going to be able to do any work around a synagogue on Shabbat.  You might think about that scheduling.  The only work allowed on Shabbat is by the rabbi and the people serving shabbat lunch.  Sunday morning through sundown on Friday is fine though.

Andrea Mitchell lied her a$$ off in front of America by sounding like Joy Behar.  She said, “Governor DeSantis said that slavery and the aftermath of slavery should not be taught to Florida schoolchildren” and this is a blatant lie according to Bryan Griffin, Over DeSantis’ press secretary.

His reply to NBC and MSNBC was there would be no contact or interaction between the Governor and their organizations until Andrea Mitchell fully apologizes.

Mitchell came on MSNBC and said her wording was “imprecise”.

DeSantis’ office said essentially, Go to Hell and don’t bother to call until Andrea issues a genuine sincere apology.  Imprecise doesn’t cut it.

The press office of Donald Trump started the first training class for the Right on how to treat the media with Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kayleigh McEnany.  The folks in Florida have paid good attention.

It’s 73 here right now after hitting 83 around 3 PM. A great day for working outside but it did get a little warm. No serious projects for the day just a few jobs here and there. Wife was cleaning up behind the pole barn and had her Mule on the trail with the little trailer behind it loading up small limbs and such on it. When she finished up she wanted me to take it back to the Tractor shed since the trail is tricky pulling the trailer. Where she parked it, I couldn’t go toward the highway or the little pond so I had to back it out all the way around the pole barn, up the hill beside the pump house and to the gravel road. Not much fun and I had to put in 4 wheel drive to push the trailer back up the hill backwards. But I Got R Done and it was good practice since I almost never drive her Mule. Also I still haven’t got the hang of the drive by wire throttle so I’m either going too fast or or not moving. All in all it was a great day.

Lol, loads it up parked where you can’t move it then bats those eyes, “Can you move my mule sweetie pie, I’m just a little ole girl you know!” 😛

At the last pipeline safety meeting I attended (and no more, yay!) the presenters STRONGLY made the point that “any time the surface is disturbed, you need to call 811 to locate utility lines”.

As a point, she described a real event where a contractor put some stakes in the ground to mark out a sidewalk. He managed to nick a gas line, and the gas traveled underground, hugging the service line, into the house where it managed to eventually blow up the house.

Here, we’ve had our lines marked several times (and Hubby installed most of them), so we know where they are.

Why would anybody call the “811 – Call Before You Dig” number in Texas to plant shrubs and flowers ?

Are they laying water, gas and drain lines 12″ deep these days ?

  68. Tedtam Avatar

I’m all for just visually locating where the power and gas go into the building and make a judgment call.

The contractors who bury the lines are told to “bury them where they lay”.  They don’t straighten cables or service lines if they don’t belong to the company.   Some of the marking techs that I’ve talked to have told me that they’ve traced lines that wave all over the yard, coils of wires, etc.

Don’t assume the lines go in a straight line.  Weird things happen during construction.

  69. Tedtam Avatar

Are they laying water, gas and drain lines 12″ deep these days ?

Erosion, grading, other landscaping endeavors may have dropped the coverage from 12″ to 6″.

  70. Tedtam Avatar

Just repeating what I’ve been told by the safety groups.  IMHO, digging by hand only a few inches is probably okay – just let everyone know that if they hit the slightest resistance, to stop digging and check it out before continuing with their work.

We had to report every time we touched – not even nicked or cut – a service line of any type.  We could get sued five years later if a break in the cable/pipe covering resulted in rust or deterioration of the service line later and they could trace it back to our job.

And if you do call 811, take pictures of the markings BEFORE you start breaking any ground.  That has saved our company butt many times.  I kid you not, Hubby hit an unmarked gas line, called in the hit to 811, called the police, evacuated people nearby,  and then watched as a gas company employee came out to put his flags in the dirt and take pictures.  The gas company later tried to sue us for repairs because, according to their guy, the line was marked before we showed up.

I don’t know how many times and how many thousands of dollars the before pictures saved us.

We’ve had a tragedy in the garden department.

By the power vested in me from the state of confusion I hereby declare today as Texmo’s dead garden plants day.    We will lower the flags to half staff and have a moment of silence for your fallen plants.  We will always remember them.  I am submitting legislation outlawing excessive winds when vulnerable garden trays are in vulnerable areas.  I will name that law Texmo’s Wife’s Garden Plants so that we may never forget them.

    BTW that really sucks.

I just returned from buying a new TV for the living room.  The current TV started going black as I was watching it.  I was waiting for it to happen.  The TV has some years on it, and Hubby likes to fall asleep with his TV headphones on.  That sucker runs all night, most of the time without anyone watching it.  It drives me nuts.  If I turn the TV off, he’ll turn it back on when he wakes up during the night.  I had gotten him a good radio to listen to instead of the TV, but he took it to the shop and I haven’t seen it since.

So, I bought a 50″ TV to replace our 43″ TV.  I got it into the house with the help of my neighbor (Hubby’s not available this evening) so Hubby will get a nice surprise when he returns.  I made sure it had the audio ports in the back of it so he can plug in his TV headphones, and I got an extra remote because he hogs his.  TV, two remotes, and a four year warranty cost me a little over $300 at Wally World.

It’s been a while since I made hundreds of calls to 811 for utility line locates. But as I recall, one of the first things you are asked is if you are excavating deeper than 18 inches.

My brother and I did a lot of landscaping and never once called for a locate.

  75. Tedtam Avatar

Yeah, they still ask the 18″ question.

I think the Eagle Scout will be okay, but I do feel inclined to give the warnings.

Good night all.  Just finished reading today’s comments to keep up with y’all.  Busy day with several items to take care of and then going out for lunch, came home needing a nap.  The nap turned into a long one….

So tomorrow I should be back to normal here and can hang around with Hamsters in the morning.
