2023 Texas Legislature

Shannon said, “The Texas House is largest biennial gathering of sleazy whores on the planet.”

If these people cannot bring themselves to slay the Dade Phelan Dragon and pass legislation to stop the indoctrination, manipulation and mutilation of the children of Texas on the sacrificial pyre of transgendered psychopathy, then each and every one should fired from office, convicted of child abuse and hung by the neck from the nearest strong live oak tree.

It’s a chilly 32 here in Bastrop this morning but it’ll hit the high 50’s later and with the sunshine it should be tolerable. Who ordered this colder weather anyway?

BTW; The little coffee pot here at the Flea Bag Hilton makes a fair cup of coffee but they only give you enough for two cups so I’ll have to head down to the lobby in a bit. I assume they start the so called breakfast at 6 AM, I hope so. The biggest problem about walking down there is that I’ll have to put on pants but as cold as it is that’d be good. 😉

    Spotted over yonder;

1975 Ford Pinto I saw at the grocery store this morning! I asked the old chap how long has he owned it and he said since 1975. I then asked him what year is it and he also stated 1975, bought brand new at a dealership not far from where I saw him! This is the first time I’ve seen a Ford Pinto look this clean and neat in these times! He went on to tell me that this is the only car that he has driven in the last 47 years! I was definitely impressed!

I was perusing some shopping options at Amazon, and found powdered Worcestershire sauce.  For some reason I got very excited about that.  I’m building up my powdered, shelf-stable pantry items.

I’m sitting here thinking about all of the things I could use this for: rubs, seasoning for canning beef, etc.

I read in the reviews that it can brick itself, so I’ll probably repackage it in some vacuum sealed packets.  I have some small mylar bags that I’ve been wondering how to use.  This would be perfect.  If they brick up inside the small packets I can use my Christmas gift – Kitchen Aid attachments for grating and shredding – to re-powder it.  I also have been saving silica packets from other food products for just this purpose.

I am also purchasing powdered honey, heavy cream, and butter.  I have a vacation trip planned with LD & Family later this year, and these powdered items would be perfect for travel.

It is sometime in 1979-80, you and your buddies are looking over at this 1975 Pinto. One of them says that car will sell for double what was paid for it someday. You’d call him crazy.

Actually, with the 13% inflation rate of 1979-80, it wouldn’t have taken that long to double the price of a Pinto and everything else.

Mr. Childers slept in a bit this morning.  He deserves a lazy Saturday, if anyone does.

    DIRTY RAIN ☙ Saturday, February 18, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

    Here’s the roundup:

Welcome to the Weekend Edition, C&C! Your tardy roundup today includes: the U.S. military looked and looked but they still haven’t found what they’re looking for; US announces Russian crimes against humanity right before Russia puts on evidence of US crimes, so it’s even; Biden stiffs Ohio, and Mainers can relax about all that black grit raining down on them, it’s not what you probably think; fake Soros video undermines DeSantis; Czech ambassadors struck with adults dying suddenly syndrome; Bollywood actor dies suddenly from happiness at acting award ceremony; Fetterman’s back in the hospital, this time for weeks; Americans continue despising corporate media who isn’t learning their lesson; another significant resignation joins the list, this time at the World Bank; and Roseanne dunks on jabs in a Fox standup special.

First up, the mystery of military skeet shooting: did it happen? why? what did they shoot down?

With regard to BOTH balloons — that were so significant they scrambled squadrons of missile-firing jet fighters — they were surprised to find them floating there. Then they couldn’t identify the mysterious “objects.” Now they can’t find them at all. Nobody tracked the fall, apparently.

We only know that ANYTHING was shot down because the military said so in a press briefing. They never released any video of the objection from fly-bys or surveillance. I hate to even ask but … are we SURE the whole thing isn’t completely made up?

One hobbyist group has stepped up and said one of their balloons has gone AWOL.  We may never know. The ridicule on the media about shooting down a hobby balloon with a very expensive plane, ordinance, and fighter pilot…well, you get the idea.

Now, on to Russia – which is asking for UN Security hearing on Nordstream:

The Wall Street Journal ran a stern story this morning headlined, “Kamala Harris Says Russia Has Committed Crimes Against Humanity.”…

    /snip

As the article points out, there is no enforcement mechanism under U.S. law for broad determinations of “crimes against humanity.” And of course, the Secretary of State’s opinion is not like a court order or anything. But Ukraine supporters should be pleased that the U.S. has now officially recognized atrocities against Ukrainian civilians, even if it is just obviously for the U.S. government’s own political purposes, since next week the Russians will be putting on evidence the U.S. sabotaged two undersea pipelines creating an historic environmental catastrophe.

  16. Tedtam Avatar

Next up – the environmental disaster that is BootyJudge East Palestine:

In a Biden Administration first, federal officials told Ohio it doesn’t qualify for federal aid related to the East Palestine derailment disaster….

Ohio gets exactly zero dollars. Ukraine, now that one’s important, because it involves protecting UKRAINIAN civilians. And because of fairness. Over $100 billion has been shoveled into Ukraine so far.

Local Maine station B98.5 ran a story yesterday headlined, “What Is Dirty Rain And Why Is It Currently Falling On Maine?”

An excellent question. I’m sure plenty of fretful Mainers, in light of recent events and watching something happening they’ve never seen before, would like to know. …

It DEFINITELY is NOT the recently blown-up train derailment chemicals just southwest, and just upwind from Maine. The article doesn’t even consider that option, because, how ridiculous! Hazardous chemical plumes can’t go up into the upper atmosphere traveling north and east a short distance to Maine, and then rain down on everybody. Only desert dust can do that. That’s its superpower.

I wonder…will the good folks in Maine get disaster dollars when their cancer rates start to rise and their pets start to drop?

  17. Tedtam Avatar

Childers then discusses the silly ‘Soros is backing DeSantis’ story, which most believe is an attempt to drive the Donald into a third party run and split the R vote.  I’ll let you read that on your own.

From the Suddenly & Unexpectedly Department:

Czechoslovakia’s popular and effective ambassador to Poland, Jakub Dürr, 46, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday….

Bollywood Actor Shahnawaz Pradhan, 56, died suddenly and unexpectedly this week, suffering a “heart attack” during an Indian awards show. Just before he lost consciousness, he complained of “excruciating chest pain.”

It was probably the joy from winning his acting award that got him. You have to keep that stuff under control. Happiness can kill you. I’m not making that up, apparently. [Insert headline about being too happy triggering heart attacks.  I AM NOT KIDDING.]

May they rest in peace and their families find comfort.

  18. TexMo Avatar

Hamous would have approved of this WIP headline.

    Edit:
So Powerline doesn’t allow hotlinking? The headline was the one about man buns.
“Criminal caught after cutting off 37 manbuns in one day, claims he ‘was doing the Lord’s work’”

  19. Tedtam Avatar

From the One World Order Development Department:

Chalk up another one. Now it’s the World Bank’s President, David Malpass, who has said he will resign before the end of his term. According to reports, the Biden Administration is already moving quickly to pick his replacement. White House advisors say Biden wants to transform the World Bank into an institution dedicated to fighting climate change — because why should it be dedicated to MONEY and FINANCE? — and Biden wants a candidate committed to “financing more renewable energy projects in the developing world.”

In other words, Biden wants somebody who will engineer a massive wealth redistribution scheme, from the U.S. to the third world.

Malpass was a Trump appointee who has spoken critically about climate change. Democrats have never liked him.

Climate change is not about climate change – it’s about wealth redistribution.

Roseanne Barr recently performed a standup routine on FoxNation about covid vaccines. Warning: adult language, and you might want to stop around 1:33 anyway:

    Link to the video here.

It seems significant to me that Roseanne could tell those jokes in front of an audience of vaccinated people. It’s not really that jokey, if you take away her voice and body language. “I hope they have to pay for that, what they did to us,” she said. Her biggest applause line was when she guffawed at the notion the government had our best interests at heart.

We are THIS close to a total narrative collapse. Maybe that’s why there are so many distractions lately. Hang in there, it’s coming.

We were in the mid to high 60s all week and it was glorious.  The cold front Texas had blow through made it here and it dropped to 25° this morning and is only up to 38°.  I’d almost forgotten how much I despise cold weather.

  23. El Gordo Avatar

Opened up the greenhouse, and there is squash sprouting everywhere.  The watermelons seems to have germinated as well.  Tomatoes and some other flowering plants are showing some evidence of sprouting but have not yet pushed through the top to be seriously noticeable just yet.  I’m tempted to take a couple of the squash plants out and just plant them in the ground next to the house to see what they do, but it is just seriously too early for them.  I see that the early spring vegetable plants are now available at Tractor Supply and other outlets, but I’m not too interested in those since I have such a small spot to begin with.  With the promise of warming temps this coming week I may get adventurous and put a few samples in the ground, get all excited when they start to grow, and then get mad when the late winter freeze wipes them all out.

  24. GJT Avatar
    GJT

I got my seeds planted in some of the little fiber planting cups from Tractor Supply yesterday. I put them out on the side patio where the most sun hits. Might be too early, might be too late who knows. Soil looks good in the garden, it cleaned up much easier than I expected. I didn’t bother with any soil test, might later I don’t know. I have to come up with some sort of fence around it from stuff I have around here, we rarely see deer but I’m pretty sure that was who was munching on them last year. I don’t want to put any kind of top on it but I may have to.

  25. GJT Avatar
    GJT

Spent twelve bucks for the seed packs and planting cups, much better than the five dollar plants at the garden stores, that half don’t make it anyhow, we will see.

Most significant New rules in Major League Baseball this year.

    1) Pitch clock – 15 seconds, 20 with a man on base. Batters must be in the box by the time 8 seconds are left.

    2) Once they’re on the rubber, pitchers can only step off the rubber twice per batter. Third time is a balk.

    2) Bases are 18” x 18”, instead of the old 15 x 15

    3) No more infield shift. There must be two defenders on each side of 2nd base

Experiments with these rules in minor league ball have shaved 20-24 minutes off game length.

    Should be interesting.

Frost covered everything this morning thanks to the 28F on the 6am posting of our outdoor thermometer’s reading transferred inside the garden room where the small weather station sits.  Spouse said it felt at least  that cold on his journey to fetch the Chron at the end of the driveway.   Forgot to ask him where it had landed today.  This time it landed where it could be seen from the house, no guessing needed.  Spouse had his winter jacket on but forgot to check for gloves in the pockets so his hands were a tad cold and red by the time he got back in the house.

Our large potted plants under the lee of the covered back porch appear to be all right.  Good thing we didn’t move them back to their places on the patio or they would have been bitten by the frost.  Checked the water level in the fountain for signs of freezing and did not see any ice, just a zillion leaves underwater that need to be cleaned out.  February continues to be an unpredictable month weather-wise no matter where you live.

  31. Shannon Avatar
    Shannon

Surprisingly, batting averages in the minors increased by only 1 point. I haven’t heard anything about steals.

But both should increase over time.

  32. Shannon Avatar

I am still unclear on first base pick-off attempts as it relates to leaving the rubber.

  33. Shannon Avatar

Oh, I forgot. The “ghost runner” rule.

In tied, extra inning games, a base runner will be put on 2nd base to start each half of the inning.

  34. GJT Avatar
    GJT

Oh my, batters gonna have to quit fiddling with their glove’s between each pitch. Wonder if batters are limited on how many “times” they can use each at bat.

  35. GJT Avatar
    GJT

Do not understand the infield shift change.

  36. Shannon Avatar
    Shannon

    Infield shift:

Often you might have seen third base abandoned….with Bregman set up at shortstop, Correa on the right side of 2nd, and Altuve playing the right hole.

  37. Shannon Avatar
    Shannon

Especially with a man on first.

  38. Shannon Avatar
    Shannon

    And a leftie at bat.

    A double-play set up strategy.

  39. Shannon Avatar
    Shannon

    Especially with certain
pitchers who can almost assuredly make the batter hit a grounder.

  40. El Gordo Avatar

Well, the simple solution will be to bring an outfielder up to beef up the side where you would play the shift player.  That would leave 2 outfielders to cover the entire field, but you are counting on a ground ball to start with.  I liked the shift because it would open the batter up to bunt to the open side or to adjust his hitting in that direction.  Baseball has always been a game of strategies and playing the percentages, and both sides know what their own tendencies are as well as the tendencies of the opponent.  They will figure out a way to make the plays work in their favor one way or another.

  41. Shannon Avatar
    Shannon

It’s all about risk, too. If the batter gets ahold of one do you really want to trust right field to a guy playing shallow and a shifted center fielder who is still standing a mile away?

    🙂

    MLB’s Longest Games

It was a Saturday night and my girlfriend and I were driving back to Bellville from staying at one of the cabins on Pleasure Hill outside Kerrville, owned by a branch of our family.  It was after midnight and I turned on the radio to try to stay awake somewhere around the east side of San Antonio.  I thought at first it was a recorded replay of the game, but then realized they were over 5 hours into a tie game.  We listened all the way home and got to hear the end of the game.

The Astros won their 24-inning game against the Mets, and they won this game, too, beating the Dodgers in a seven-hour, 14-minute contest at the Astrodome. The score was 4-4 after six innings, with the key knocks including a home run by Kirk Gibson for the Dodgers and a two-run single by Ken Caminiti for the Astros. After the sixth, the teams played the next 15 1/2 innings without another run. But in the bottom of the 22nd, Rafael Ramirez lined a walk-off single to right field (just over the glove of Dodgers legendary pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, who entered as a defensive replacement at first base in the 21st frame) to give Houston the victory.

When I turned on the news the next morning, it was all about the Chicoms murdering their own citizens in Tiananmen Square.

I had lunch with Hubby’s car club today.  It was nice to get out.  I had planned on coming home to the treadmill and some housework, but I decided to cook some chicken curry soup for canning, and the standing in the kitchen, and the slight leanings at the counter and cooktop started some back spasms, so no cardio today.

I did get the canning done, and we had enough broth left over for me to add in some of my dried and frozen stuff and we had a delicious soup tonight while the canner jiggler was jiggling.  The flame is now off and I feel like I can sit up now.

Maybe I’ll study some Latin.  Should’ve been doing that all along, but now that I’m CAUGHT UP on my bookkeeping, I feel more free to spend time studying than entering accounting data.

    Funny you should mention that.

As I sit here in this pub on the square, I admire the original oak floors. Lord only knows how old they are. But they are exactly the same as the ones in my grandpa’s pharmacy, which was just a few doors down from this spot.

These old building’s floors are on some version of pier & beam.

Now, back to fat people, of which I now qualify. I’m sitting on a tall bar stool at a tiny table. About halfway between the bar and the restroom. So, there’s a fair amount of traffic going by.

What’s weird is that the size of a person has no relationship to how heavy their footfall is. The tiniest woman can pass by and, on this ancient floor, it feels like an earthquake. But a guy twice my size can go by and I don’t even feel it.

    Weird.

So, how heavy are your footfalls?

Morning gang.  Things are warming up out here today according to weather person.  Of all the seeds that I planted, it seems that the 2 types of yellow squash are the most prolific when it comes to germinating, so if you would like to have your own squash plant for your garden this year, just stop by and I’ll gladly give you a couple.  Watermelons are also coming up.  Tomatoes and peppers not so much yet.  And I’ve started some marigolds that have not surfaced yet either, but I think you can toss them on the driveway and they will grow.  My other roses and stuff are beginning to bud out, but the dwarf Buford holly is still bare.  The twigs are not brittle though, so I’m thinking they are just waiting a bit longer before getting started.

The one bloom on my bluebonnet plant is getting a little bigger, but none of the other plants are showing signs of blooming just yet.  One of my favorite sights is to see a bluebonnet sticking up through the ice with a big bloom on top – a sure sign of spring.

You all have a great day now.  More later as it develops.

I think about eight teams from our racing series made the trip to Casa Grande, Arizona to race in a big event this weekend. They showed ‘em how it’s done in Texas, one won it but was DQ’ed due to carb rule, next up was a Texan who was declared the winner, 2nd, 3rd and 5th were our guys as well! Heck of a job.

Funny how the fact that a CC holder shot the suspect hasn’t been mentioned in local media.

I decided to check the three network franchisees in El Paso to see how they reported the shooting.

NBC News – no mention of any CC good samaritan

ABC News – no mention either

CBS News – CC shooter mentioned but no mention that his weapon was legal.

It’s interesting to note the CBS affiliate in El Paso assigned a reporter to cover the shootings, but NBC and ABC locals punted and just ran an Associated Press hack piece  not telling the reader anything useful.

Morning, gang. I don’t seem to have any plans for today. Sudoku went smoothly this morning, and I guess I’ll just browse the ‘net while I finish my breakfast. I do have a couple of things to do online, but after that, I may just go back to bed.

    Good beautiful morning, Hamsters,

Not sure how long the sun will stay with us today since the overcast is multiplying from the NW and covering more and more sky. The previously sleeping wind has ditched its slow start and is making an entrance here.  Small patches of light come and go on the yards around the house thanks to the trees that still have their cover.  The bare trees look so forlorn as they reach for the gray sky.  Indeed the dead of winter here rotates its bleak days with wonderful sunshine and warm temps until the next cold front marches in.

In the frozen north of Wisconsin, the bleak days swap time with bright sun that turns a fresh snowy scene sparkling and helps a bit to melt it.  But melting snow and slush freeze again at night even with those warmer days and sadly become dirty snow and slush on roadsides and sidewalk edges this time of year.  Thus it is time to beware of frozen surfaces that do not show a slippery toping.  Toe-test those before walking on them.  Falling on frozen ground can be dangerous for anyone but particularly so for older folks.

March usually has at least one big snowfall that sometimes is a blizzard, and one always happens near St. Patrick’s Day, like clockwork the day before or on.  This is true of Madison, in south central Wisconsin.  Farther north gets more and has many visitors who like snowy sports.  Ilinois folks come again for those outings.  But Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota have many visitors who come from mid-west states that do not have that kind of winter.

Just to finish up Ms Adee, my 10 day forecast tells me no more freezing temps in February, and almost spring like conditions for the next several days.  But every year I finally get all excited and put my tomato plants out before April 15, and inevitably, a last minute freeze comes through and takes them out.  I’ll probably do the same thing again this year too though.  I opened up the greenhouse and letting the fresh air and sunshine it even though it is still a little bit cool, but looking for above 70 degrees before the day is done out here.  The squash plants are almost ready to go in the ground, but it’s just way too early for that – I may move them to larger containers in a couple of weeks though.  I’ve got so many of them that I may put a few in the garden just to see how they do knowing they will most likely not survive – is that being cruel?  Melon seeds are germinating well also.  Tomato plants must be the most delicate things in the plant kingdom, so I’m just leaving them alone until they develop some strength.  I’m tempted to go ahead and put a little rose food on the roses to stimulate them, but again I just think it is too early, and they are budding out pretty well on their own so far.  OK, more later.

Hmmm, the O’Rourke book title got sent to stand in the corner and would not show up online.  Somebody in charge of something obviously got a bad case of the vapors over the title.

I noticed yesterday that 20-Y.O.’s azaleas along his front porch are blooming already, whereas my one big azalea bush is green and looks healthy, but no sign of a flower yet.

    My #96:

Well, HE has a live-in custodian, while at Chez Harp, it is ME or nobody. Several times back in 2013-14, when I was having high-tech knees put in, I had no choice but to hire basic yard work. I was very dissatisfied with that.

Re 80-Y.O.’s needing a custodian, he was still robust, working and traveling when his wife became bedridden and then died several years later. He has a small but fully equipped apartment in the 3rd section of his 3-car garage, which was established when his wife first became ill. They needed a place for a live-in nurse, and then after Inge died, he wanted to have a live-in caretaker who could see to things while 80-Y.O. was still travelling. Being retired military himself — a colonel — he looked for an ex-military guy who could maintain the yard, the fish ponds in the back yard, and just live there in case of any issues. I was surprised to hear that there are grapevines for ex-military looking for positions like that.

Finally checking in – kneeling for the last half of the mass really left me wanting to lie down.  I should’ve put my back brace on as soon as I came home, but – duh!

Elderly Gent, my back-of-me pew mate was waiting for me after mass.  He usually heads out asap at the end of mass and waits for me.  He looked wobbly on his way back from the Communion rail, and after he sat down and I turned around and asked if he was okay. He say he was, but in our after mass conversation he admitted that the solemn mass was getting harder for him to attend, because of the length.  But getting himself together to attend the 9:00 a.m. novus ordo mass (English, shorter) would also be a challenge.  He did remind me that he has kids in from out of state, and the running to and fro is also a bit wearing on him. I worry about him when he doesn’t show and hasn’t told me he’s going out of town.  I’ve become quite fond of him, and he of me.  I commiserated with the mass causing physical pain for me, too.  It’s another bonding thing for us, I guess.

But the smile on his face when he sees me – I hope he’s around for a while longer.  He’s just a sweetheart of a guy.

Speaking of old guys and the previous story about CC gun owners – I realized this morning that another elderly guy who is an usher and collections collector is carrying during mass.  As he was leaning forward slightly  to rise up for Communion, I noticed the outline of his guy at the small of his back.  But, not being a snowflake, I felt comforted instead all a-feared.

And on a very positive note – I got to play with a little baby today.  Her name matches mine, and grandma allowed me to hold her as momma watched.  It wasn’t long before I had her laughing out loud, and I guess it’s unusual because both women were “would you look at that!”.  If I’m lucky, I’ll get to play with her again next week.  I just love babies.  Oh, and little Elizabeth, who’s been praying for my arm, brought me an azalea flower.  I saw several flowers being held by little girls, and one toddler boy presented a little toddler girl (Elizabeth’s little sister) with a clutch of small roses that he had picked.  You can guess the fun the adults had, watching that little transaction.  I’m guessing it might be a little hard to keep a full bush of flowers in the courtyard.  The parish is overflowing with kids.  What a joy!

I found ribs on sale at Kroger for $1.99/lb, so I bought two racks of ribs.  My firestarters were a big help in getting the fire going, so yay me!  The ribs were delish.

So, now I’m settling down to watch Columbo and now that I’m sitting up, I’ll pull out my Latin book.

I always admired the old Datsun Z cars.  I have a longtime old friend who did a full restoration on a 240Z back in the early 1990s.

This is the story of a guy who turned a 280Z into a wagon with the help of a bunch of people including the original car designer who came up with a never marketed “sports wagon” version for Datsun in the heyday of the Z-car era.

For over five decades automotive enthusiasts have been entirely enamored with Datsun Z-cars, from the original 240Z through the later 260Z and 280Z—and then on to the ZX models and eventually the modern Zs. The long-running, affordable sports car carries a legion of fans for each of its seven generations and restored and modified versions of its original S30 chassis are more popular now than ever. Even if you’re not all that familiar with the early Z, this Datsun 240Z Sport Wagon’s silhouette tells you that it’s unlike any other.

    and,

In order to get the 240Z aesthetic he was after, Ataka painstakingly removed the 280Z’s 5-mph bumpers and backdated the look. Outfitted with a makeshift blueprint of the newly formed rear, the car was handed over to a fabricator to handcraft the required additions. The days ticked away as the custom pieces were fitted and adjusted over and over before everything was welded to the body. Satisfied with the car’s new shape, it was sprayed in a similar blue to Matsuo’s original design.

    It is a beautiful car.
