Wednesday Border Town Open Comments

From HotAir.com :

The statement that “every town is a border town” is hitting home in Jamestown, NY, with a population of about 28,000.  It seems word got out that Jamestown was a good place to go, so the buses took them there.

Residents of the very small village recently learned that as many as 35 illegal migrants, almost all of them from Colombia, have settled in their town and many more are expected to arrive soon. (NY Post)

In this small town — about as far as one can get from the southern border without entering Canada — residents are bracing for an influx of migrants that could cause a crisis similar to the one that has New York City facing a fiscal cliff.

“If a city of 8 million people can be overwhelmed by a couple thousand migrants, imagine what a couple hundred can do to overwhelm a small rural community upstate?” warned state Sen. Joe Borrello (R-Jamestown).

“It wouldn’t take many migrants to overwhelm the system,” he added.

For the irritating, liberal, holier-than-thou cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, who put out the “sanctuary city” shingle, I’d say “cry me a river”.  But this sounds like a nice little town that hasn’t bothered anybody. They are not prepared for this.  But then, neither is Eagle Pass nor El Paso.

I’ve been to or traveled through Jamestown many times over the years because it sits on the primary interstate leading to Ohio. It’s one of those “don’t blink or you’ll miss it” communities that dot the upstate region. Like virtually any community in the country, they had their own homelessness problem before the border crisis began. (Their names are Phil, Mark, and Judy.)

The residents of this community are trying to help, but they don’t have the resources to handle the tidal wave of humanity headed their way, nor the megaphone that their behemoth city brother has in order to call for help.  And, as the article author points out, they get real winter there.  Like, 17 degrees recently.  It’s hard to survive that in an outside tent.

How did Jamestown become the destination of choice for so many Colombian migrants when it barely shows up on a map? According to some of the migrants who spoke to reporters through a translator, it was something like an old-fashioned game of telephone. One small family of migrants had a relative living in Jamestown who offered to let them stay with her. Down in the migrant camps along the border, the news of one family having a couple of extra rooms quickly made its way through the grapevine, rapidly morphing into ‘Jamestown is the place to go for resettlement.’

/snip

The locals are concerned about what will happen in the near future. People have already begun selling fake Social Security cards and licenses to some of them. Those who are unable to find legal jobs have already turned up selling drugs. As with all communities with large numbers of homeless people and illegal migrants, crime rates always go up as the overcrowding continues. Jamestown has a grand total of 60 police officers and less than a dozen patrol cars. What are they supposed to do when an actual crime wave arrives in their sleepy village?

These people are being beseiged by Bidenomics, the economics of policy.  Wiss poor policy.  These Jamestownians will get no help nor sympathy from The Powers That Be.

I am sure that Jamestown is one of many smaller communities finding themselves at the mercy of the onslaught.  I can only hope that just as the illegals requested busing based on what they heard, that votes will be changed as relatives call friends and family in other locales to describe what is happening to their town.

The loss of their culture, their fiscal stability, and their safety.

I’m here just, lurking. Actually I was making coffee after taking care of Dawg. Her steroid shot caused her to drink copious amounts of water so she had to go out a couple of times over night. She’s doing fine now but still has a little swelling around her face.

It sucks to be them, but at some point there just may be enough people in places more than a couple hundred miles from the border who get inconvenienced enough to get our wonderful government to actually do something.

Morning Gang… after reading this happy little bundle of sunshine story, I can’t bring myself to put “good” in front of it; but I understand that if there were an easy way to fix all this, surely someone would have tried it… maybe someone would have tried it… I guess nobody ever tried it

    A BUCK 6 BITS:

Last night you mentioned a big pile of books.  If they don’t sell, donate them to the local library.  The library is a much better place than the dumpster.  Old, crappy, books also make good targets for blowguns and air rifles.

#6 BSue:  Trump was actually trying to fix the problem. Joey Spongebrain decided (actually his puppeteers decided) that the wave of peasants was a feature, not a bug, and it furthered their goals of destroying this country.  The Biden Administration and all of its puppeteers are traitors and need to be treated as such.

    The OC headline story.

Jamestown, New York peaked out in population in 1930 at 45,000 residents.  Its claims to fame are as the birthplace of Lucille Ball and the Crescent wrench.  Jamestown is poor.

In the city, the age distribution of the population shows 25.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,837, and the median income for a family was $33,675. Males had a median income of $30,003 versus $20,039 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,316. About 15.8% of families and 19.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.1% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.

It is absolutely cruel for the federal government to send illegal immigrants to a struggling, some would say dying town like Jamestown.  Unemployment hit 18.6% in April of 2020 but drifted down to 3.5% by November 2022 because a significant number of people left to live and find work elsewhere.

I hate the Biden administration like no other in history.

Maybe Hot Wheels & DeSantis should ship several bus loads to Albany. It’s much smaller than NYC and would provide the NY legislature an object lesson on why the feds need to do more. While they’re at it, find a bunch of smaller “sanctuary cities” and let them provide the sanctuary they’re so proud of.

Back from TOK.  As usual, not much changes out here from day to day.  Still running around out here unafraid and living life.  #11 – the reason the government does that is because they know that the little broke city has no means of fighting back.  They don’t have political clout and they don’t have financial resources.  So they have no option but to shut up and take it – unless the citizens themselves band together and decide to resist in their own way.  The path of least resistance by government if you will.  That’s always how they do it. The big fish eat the little fish.

#7 #10 First off I wish I could take a look at the books before they’re gone but that’s not happening. If it were me I’d give the books to Friends of the Library, they sell the books and use the proceeds to help out the library. FWIW; I first thought that the books might go to the library but they already have plenty of books. As far as Half Price Books goes I’d never “donate” them to those crooks. I tried to sell a batch of pretty good books to them once and they just offered pennies. Something like, if they could sell them all for $20, (half price?) they’d offer you 35 cents. SO that is the day I discovered Friends of the Library and donated the books to them instead.

    So it goes.

But the Biden documents story does huge political damage to the BS charges they were trying to get Trump on, and as such it is a huge embarrassment to Team Democrat. The hypocrisy is glaringly obvious and impossible to ignore, however much MSNBC and the Democrats want you to.

And the hypocrisy gets worse by the minute. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, while the FBI sent dozens of armed agents to raid Mar a Lago, apparently AG Garland decided to send not a one to help search for documents at any of the locations Biden was stashing his.

And yes, it was a decision. They considered it, but somehow decided that sending actual law enforcement agents to oversee the search would “compromise” the investigation.

Uh, what? How, exactly? Normally you would think the opposite, right? Best to have a law enforcement guy there for chain of custody. If a crime is being investigated, you don’t usually ask the guy being investigated (or his lawyers) to pull a “scouts’ honor” maneuver.

Current BFF was a librarian in her other life before retirement.  She has no problem murdering books.  Mother had a large bookcase full of popular 1950’s and 1960’s hard backs, including many classics in hard back.  As well as paperbacks by the hundreds stashed in cabinets and boxes throughout the house.  I finally found some lady that took them for her garage sale, and she told me she eventually tossed most of them.  BFF says just to trash them as there is really no need to keep them – even the classics in hard back.  I’ve managed to clear a lot of bookshelf space but still retained what I think are the good ones.  Of course, there is nothing in there that is really a collectable, first edition, or anything like that.  So since BFF is a well educated librarian and a Rhodes Scholar, I tend to take her advice as that of a professional.  So for me, I just slip a few in the trash bin every week, and before long, there is extra space on the bookshelf.

What to do with a smart phone that is no longer in use?  Well, since mine is connected to my local in house internet network,  I think it will work as a controller for my electronics and sort of as a mini-computer despite not having a phone connection.  I’m experimenting to see just what it will and won’t do, but rather than toss it, I figured it’s worth playing wih a little bit around here.   In my fearless diatribe yesterday, I failed to mention a few more devices that I have spying on me all the time in addition to my TV, my Echos, and my computers.  I have Amazon Fire Sticks and Roku on my TVs, and each one of those has a remote control associated with it.  Those remotes all have voice activated features and are always listening in too. So just trying to recap nothing but listening devices, there are 3 Echos, 3 Fire Stick remotes, 2 Roku remotes, 1 TV remote with voice activation, and now my old smart phone.  I can tell any one of those devices to turn my lights on or off or to play this or that on whatever other receiver I might have.  My upgraded internet signal is now delivering to at least 2 houses down in all directions, but I did turn off the no password guest feature.  Don’t know what else I could to attract trouble if I listen to all the security experts, but I’m still unafraid.  Except for the government and the Dems.

I was going to sear it on all sides, doctor it up and vacuum seal it in a bag then set it at 150 degrees for 30 hours or so. Get some potatoes, carrots and onion and put it all together for about an hour in the oven tomorrow evening. What cha got?

#25 – Here’s a bit about my experience with the sous vide.  If you just put that roast in a slow cooker for a few hours with the mixed veges in there too, the roast would come out tender and falling apart – maybe even stringy – and well done.  If it were me, first I’d check a few YT videos to get the suggested temps, times, and the like; and also whether to prepare it from raw or to do some searing ahead of time.  If it were me, I’d season it up, maybe add some onion and garlic, and vacuum seal at that point.  Then I would set the sous vide temp and time.  The temp will determine the degree of doneness (if that’s a word) – you might prefer less done than what you see in the slow cooker.  Somewhere there is a temp chart for rare, med rare, med, etc.  The temp will determine the level of done.  Next, the time will determine how much of the connective tissues etc. that can be “melted” to make the meat more tender.  There will be a minimum temperature below which there will be no change to the connective tissues, so you will want to set the temp above that level.  I’m thinking that I did a brisket at 150 for 36 hours which turned out fine, so for a better cut of meat like a roast, it may not take quite as long – but go to the experts on YT or the recipes for that advice.  So, temp for done level; time for tenderness level.  The main difference between the sous vide and the slow cooker is that the meat will come out with some texture more steak like rather than falling apart and stringy.  A roast with a pink middle but very tender is hard to achieve any other way than sous vide.

The finish after the sous vide is to put a “crust” or bark on the meat.  You could do it on the grill with a hot fire, under the broiler in the oven, or even in a hot cast iron skillet I suppose.  The juice from the sous vide can be used to cook the veges or to make gravy or both I suppose.  With my brisket I just finished it under the broiler in the oven and that worked just fine.  There is no need to cook the meat in the oven as it is already done, so I suppose you could heat it up in there, but don’t leave it in for a long time or you will have wasted the sous vide time.

Just my experience.  There are excellent ideas out there on YT and the other recipe providers, so review a few and pick out what makes sense to you.  Good luck.

Meanwhile, in my second Hamous window, I shall soldier on.  (The first post, if it ever shows up, has the roundup and the first story about DeSantis making anti-covid tyranny laws permanent.  )

From the “Suddenly and Unexpectedly” Department:

The drumbeat on the excess deaths problem is becoming deafening. On Monday, former Blackrock executive Ed Dowd told Steve Bannon that insiders say a “narrative shift” on sudden deaths is coming from the White House:

    /snip

Dowd said the disability data and the spike in deaths in working-age Americans (read: subject to mandates) is getting too big to hide, and White House staff is currently debating announcing an “epidemic” of sudden death, blaming, wait for it, long covid and the horrors of climate change. That’s not a joke.

I guess the rug isn’t big enough to hide the pile of bodies any more.

Without mentioning the most obvious suspect — the one new thing that 70%+ of Americans have in common — the authors expressed concern over the rising rates of U.S. deaths over the baseline through 2022 — not just higher this year than in 2020-21, but MUCH higher, and which keep on floating upwards. Most alarmingly, and consistent with Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s goofy notice that for some reason there are fewer employees competing for jobs, deaths are highest among working-age Americans (18-44):

    /snip

It’s pin the blame on the covid donkey! At least they’re starting to pin the blame on the jackass experts where it undoubtedly belongs:

No time is too soon to acknowledge and begin to alleviate the collateral damage from Covid policies.

    /snip

Hypertension and heart disease deaths combined were elevated 32,000. Some of these appear to be heart attacks suffered at home without visiting a hospital. Diabetes or obesity, drug poisoning, and alcohol-induced causes were each elevated 12,000 to 15,000 above previous (upward) trends. Homicide and motor-vehicle fatalities combined were elevated almost 10 000.

I believe that a threshold case for negligent homicide could now be brought against public health officials at all levels of government.

[Insert headline about US “excess deaths” almost 350,000 in 2022]

Then Childers also brings up the same issues with Germany’s mandates and BBC covering up the mortality rate, using the euphemism for “pandemic hangover”.  /spits/  I don’t think a hangover involves a gravestone and grieving family.  Usually hangovers involve waking up to find your “friends” have decorated your body with sexually explicit pictures done in Sharpie pens.

At this point, the now-undeniable excess deaths are mainstream news in Great Britain. So far, U.S. corporate media has managed to surround the burgeoning problem with a dense fog of aerosolized cow manure.

Europe as a whole is getting shellacked. As of January 14th, official data aggregator Euromomo showed 2022 excess deaths rivaling those for 2020 — the year with the deadliest covid variant and without vaccines or any officially-approved treatments other than a kidney-destroying remdesivir injection and the vent:

Japan also is questioning the over-the-top death rate. [Insert video of wissed off Japanese officials demanding and investigation into the jab.]  And, of course, Australia is still attempting locate its collective head-up-rectal-region.  I always wanted to visit Australia, but refuse to do so until sanity prevails again.  If ever.

  37. Tedtam Avatar

    But wait!  There’s more!

But some countries are not experiencing excess mortality. South Africa — which largely rejected the shots — has had no real excess deaths since mid 2021: [imagine various charts here]

In fact, Africa’s excess deaths are currently at a record LOW — the opposite of the highly-jabbed countries.

    Go figger. /eye roll

    Next up:

Whenever the jabs are mentioned in the same paragraph as excess deaths, pro-vaxxers hysterically complain and,…maniacally refuse to debate. As I see it, this is the most damning evidence against the shots. Anyone whose argument is “na na na na I can’t hear you” is not a serious person….

Since the pro-vaxx crowd is terrified of dying, especially from mysterious causes lurking around corners waiting to pounce, it beggars one’s imagination to detect any rational explanation for their planet-sized disinterest in getting to the bottom of excess mortality. Aren’t they worried that they could be next?

It’s even baffling why they would want to protect the shots. What do they care? It’s not their job. They don’t have a stake in pharma profits.

IMHO, they have become so emotionally invested in the narrative that to think rationally and reviewing the data would cause so much cognitive dissonance their heads would ‘splode.  There is no virtue signaling and the related serotonin spike with backtracking on their self-imposed mandates.

Childers brings up some really good questions:

But it IS the CDC’s job. Why isn’t the excess mortality in the U.S. the CDC’s current highest priority? Why hasn’t the entire federal bureaucracy been mobilized to figure out why people are keeling over in record numbers? Where are the death-counting Chyrons and the weeping anchors? Where are all the politicians reading off the names of the dead? The endless stories and op-eds? The vast lake of expert opinions? The angry questions shouted at the White House press secretary?

    Indeed.

sear it on all sides, doctor it up and vacuum seal it in a bag then set it at 150 degrees for 30 hours or so

What kind of roast?  If it’s a “nice” roast like a rib roast, the temp is way too warm; it should be closer to 117F. I’ve used sous vide on a ribeye a little cooler than that, then seared it in a very hot (~720F) cast iron skillet

If it’s a roast you could loosely call a pot roast, I’m thinking you may want the temperature pretty hot to get the collagen completely broken down, like 197F. I’d check YouTube vids first to see what works best.

In either case, I’d sear after the bath. One cool thing about sous vide is you don’t need to let it rest since the cooking is very gentle.

It’ll probably throw off a lot of juice you can use for gravy/sauce.

    Good Morning Hamsters,

Squawk to the rescue, but those pesky gremlins are in retreat probably only briefly.  Wonder if it is possible to direct them elsewhere, such as the computers of the Dem party.

Visit to the doctor this morning solved the mystery of my left leg pain for the past few days.  Sciatica, which is irritation of the sciatic nerve that runs from the back of the hip down through the knee.  Comes and goes at no particular intervals, and fortunately there is medication to quiet it.  Seems to be primarily an affliction of older folks. And the orientation of the upper leg and knee seems to determine how painful it is or if there is no pain.

BTW – there are quite a few comments about “shedding” and getting reactions after being around – and this is from one of the commenters – “tjp” (the jabbed people).

I still hold out on the concept of shedding the spike protein, but I read a lot of stories about people who get sick just being around the jabbed.  Even pets who’ve been poked.

“I caught a shark.  It’s towing me around.”

    “WTH?  How’d that happen?”

Phrases like “it escalated quickly” and “it seemed like a good idea when I was on the beach” were used.  The charter crew got Uniman on board.  His name is Tim, and it turns out that Tim had hooked a huge bull shark.

After I demolished my disc, sciatica and I became very well acquainted.  Over time, some healing occurred but the pain never quite went away, with some days being worse than others.  I was taking Aleve twice a day, and that kept me functional.

The prospect of being on pain medication for the remainder of my life bothered me, since I didn’t want to damage my liver or kidneys with long term use; hence, the fusion surgery.

I am quite happy with how I felt yesterday and today.  My doctor this morning said that it lack of pain may be that the inflammation from the surgery is finally going down.  Yay!  With the pain I was having, I was afraid the surgery may have been a failure.  Now, I’m hopeful everything will work out okay.

So, if you continue to have problems, I suggest Aleve for when you need it.  My inversion table was also key in my handling the injury.  Hanging upside down on a regular basis pretty much removed the sciatica. Right after my injury, I’d rather hang upside down than do anything else.  Absolutely no pain at all. Problem is, I kept forgetting that it was a therapy, not a cure, and got lazy about the hang time.  So, Aleve and/or inversion. It worked for me.

What kind of roast?  If it’s a “nice” roast like a rib roast

No not a rib roast. I think Chuck, it came two to a pack and I separated them and froze them so no label. Definitely want cooked all the way through, DDG say 133 but needs more than that. Thanks for the info.

I’d go no higher than 140 degrees.  20 hours should be plenty long for anything less than about a 5 pounder.  It will be carveable and not shredding or falling apart. Makes a cheaper cut of meat more like a more expensive cut of meat without cooking it to death.

AS today’s discussion revolves somewhat around excess deaths, let me share some thoughts. My S-I-L, who works in the oil and gas industry by day and night, has a side gig building wooden caskets for a friends funeral homes. The cheap caskets are used for cremation services. Pre-covid he tells me who make 1o or so each month.

I saw him last weekend and he says now he is making 30 a month just for one location in small city. He is jabbed. After telling me how busy he is making boxes his final comment was “Thanks Pfiser”.

Thought you might be interested. And good morning  all.

I guess there’s a silver lining somewhere in all this mess.  The death industry is probably hiring like crazy.

If they can keep their employees from dropping on the job.

Thanks for that, I’m going to go ahead a bring it down to 140. Trying to avoid pink center, that ain’t going to fly around here for roast. She’s already looking at me doing this like I’m crazy.

The woman who owns the funeral home got one shot and suffered massive kidney failure. Ended up on dialysis for almost a year but is okay now.

    Tedtam 12:16 pm,

I recall the awful time you had with the disc and now thankfully the relief coming at last from the fusion surgery.  Sometimes the doctors or their nurses can forget to tell you what to look out for with a new medication. I can’t take plain old aspirin.  I’m allergic to it and have been since childhood.  Something like one half of one percent of the population is allergic to it.  And amazingly, my brother-in-law is also allergic to it.

My doctor is calling in a scrip for the present discomfort and said by all means continue walking regularly (weather permitting) and ride your stationary bike to gain strength.  That bike has been sitting forlornly in the garden room for a long time.  It is very substantial and does not move easily. We’ve adjusted it to be farther away from furniture in the room so it is easier to mount and dismount.  It faces out the large garden room windows with a view of the back yard and pastures so it is not boring to ride.

    Sciatica is the Beast.

Having herniated all 5 discs in my lumbar region over a period of about 35 years, I consider my self an expert in the field.

Most people’s sciatic pain is from a bulging disc (not herniated) that causes it to “pinch” the nerve ending from extending from the lumbar area of the spine.

The worst sciatic pain though comes from the Piriformis which is the floating, somewhat triangular plate which holds your tailbone or sacrum.  There are two lateral muscles that hold this in place and allow your lower spine to flex and bend.  If you pull one of those muscles and it goes into a spasm it will pull the base of your spine to one side or the other and cause a whole lot of pain.

When I was suffering from acute, intense Piriformic Syndrome back in the late 1990s, my chiropractors wouldn’t touch me.  They told me to go to an orthopedic surgeon.  Fortunately, I was able to find a neuromuscular therapist (NMT) who was able to eventually cure the problem, but it took about 15 sessions with her (3 sessions X 5 weeks) to finally get it done.

The rest of disc episodes involved pain killers, muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen and Naproxen.  It takes time, but the body finally adapts.

When I first started going to a chiropractor, I was given the name “duck butt” because I literally could not walk upright, but had to stick my rear out behind me like a duck.  I finally took my coworkers’ advice and went to Dr. Malcolm Bailey, who had offices in the tunnels under downtown Houston, not far from my office.

He showed me my x-ray.  It was alarming.  At the lower part of my back, my spine did a horizontal “v” shape, like >.  He gave me my first adjustment and an ice pack, and told me to plan on seeing him 3xweek for at least two weeks.

I did 3xweek for 2 weeks, 2xweek for about 4 weeks, 1xweek for another few months, then as needed.  That man worked on Hubby, too.  We love our chiropractor.  He even prayed with me once, which was unexpected but very much appreciated.

  61. Tedtam Avatar

Lovely Daughter gifted me with a back decompression device that looks kinda like bicycle handlebars.  There are two flat pads that fit on my thighs as I lay on the floor with my knees bent.  I can then push down on the handlebars and it stretches my back out.  I have to be careful with it, though, as I can easily push too hard and pull my back too much.

It is portable, though, and I can pack it in my car for trips if I want to.  Can’t do that with my inversion table.

Well, I could, but then I couldn’t pack all of the other stuff I bring with me.

So I’m trying the baking soda/ground beef thing.  ~2lb 88% ground beef (it’s what Costco had last weekend) and a scant teaspoon of baking soda.  Let it sit for bout 10-15 minutes and started browning it.

There wasn’t any water-oriented liquid in the pan, just some grease from the fat, which I didn’t drain off (many flavors & nutrients are fat soluble).  Using Wick Fowler’s 2-Alarm chili mix.  I added some additional cayenne to make it 4-alarm, but i think I overdid it a little so it’s 5-alarm.  C’est la vie.

It’s simmering away now.  Service will include the chili, grated cheddar and grated jack cheeses, diced red onion, & Premium saltines.  Someone may add some crema Mexicana to make it closer to 3-alarm.

I’ll report back after the tastings – may be tomorrow.

n.b. – not a bean in sight; those were served with the street tacos last night.

I’ll not go into much detail about my 30 year familiarity with chronic, daily sciatic pain. On a 1 to 10 pain scale, it’s never less than a 4 and usually a lot higher.

    A BUCK 6 BITS:

Last night you mentioned a big pile of books.  If they don’t sell, donate them to the local library.  The library is a much better place than the dumpster.  Old, crappy, books also make good targets for blowguns and air rifles.

    Et al

Thanks for all the great input about old books solutions and sorry for the slow reply. 🙁

Most of the suggestions I have tried on my book collection with varying results. Most entities are overwhelmed with book donations and are very hesitant about taking on more. Two said I could use their dumpster.

There are 5 co-heirs in the estate and 2 live 2,000 miles away and want Uncle Abuck to be the “Step and Fetch” of the affair. They also see only dollar signs and want to try and sell everything first. Then it becomes Abucks problem.

Mom was a member of several book clubs that sent a book a month for 46 years. She read them all and kept them. But wow what a mess!

    Note to self:

Start thinning out my stuff now. 😯

Our problem with my aunt’s (hoarded) stuff was all her friends and some of the family arguing over us throwing out items, “no, you can sell that, oh you should donate that…” All that would take a tremendous amount of time which we had none of.

I make it a habit to copy my content before hitting the magic button because it has happened before and it is too time consuming to recreate the lost post. So I just chalk it up as lost.

Men’s Bible Study in the am and then I have to sort through all of Step Dad’s private files and box them up just in case something comes up years from now.
