Joy to the World! The Lord is Come! Christmas Open Gathering

Let us all rejoice in the coming of the Savior of man!

Luke 2 6:14

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Good morning gang and Merry Christmas to all.  Crisp and cold up here as it should be on Christmas day, but alas, no snow to complete the picture.  Supposed to warm into the low 50s later today, so I’ve got that to look forward to.  Hope that you all have the greatest Christmas ever.

#5 Texpat That is great! I need to get out and water the chickens. Yesterday the water in the circular trough on the 5 gallon waterer was frozen solid and so was the extra 16″ X 4″ trough. I couldn’t do anything about the waterer since it wasn’t even 32 degrees yet so I dumped out the ice in the round one and filled it with water. It probably lasted until about dark but it’s certainly frozen now. Also the little pond was frozen over all but about 20′ in the center. The little Carp pond, by the Farm House wasn’t frozen but I guess that was because the circulation pump warmed it ever so slightly.

I just got back from taking care of the chickens.    😀

I forgot to mention that since the water is shut of at The Farm House I had to use the water out of the 100 gallon stock tank and it had 2″ of solid ice on top. I had a hard time breaking it with a big rock.

We’ve finally broken up through 20° to 23° here after hitting 11° last night w/-3 windchill.

We get about a 4 hour reprieve from freezing before it drops down below 32° again on Tuesday.

Her Highness’ son lives now with his family in South Carolina.  They just moved into a big, expensive new home in August, this morning it hit 23° and the pipes froze somewhere.  I don’t have details other than no pipes broke although they froze and they have no water.  Strange.

#4 – Well, I see that Abuck broke through the log jam on his own, so that’s a good sign.  Been fielding a few Christmas well wishes on the phone this morning, and since it’s now reported to be above freezing again, I’ll go out and check the water trough.  I’m pretty sure it was frozen solid yesterday, but it had a little room at the top so I poured a few pitchers of hot water in there enough to fill it to the top.  At least the animals had a chance to get a little drink.  It’s too heavy for me to just pour it out when it’s solid, so that will just have to wait until it’s melted down a little bit.

All my plants that I expected to get nipped by the freeze got nipped.  The others appear to be doing OK so far.  I keep them on the south side of the house where they get daily sunshine as well as heat that leaks from the house and the radiant heat that builds up in the bricks on the side of the house during the day.  Could be that this is our February cold spell arriving early this year and the rest of the winter is not quite so harsh.  Of course, could be that it’s just going to be cold all winter long too.

I had all my batteries laid out and stationed where needed in the event of power outage.  Also had the generators tested and ready to be deployed if necessary.  But so far, nary a flicker.  Keeping my fingers crossed on that one, but I may go ahead and put the batteries away.  I’ll go ahead and use the extra gasoline in my car as I just do not like to store that stuff any more than I have to; operating under the assumption that I can get more in time for the next storm is necessary.

OK, I’m off to parts unknown.  More later.

Man, the internet is really bogged down today.  I haven’t seen it this slow in a long time.  I’m also getting security checks trying to open websites where I’ve never been checked before.  There must be some vicious cyber attacks going on out there in addition to the usual Christmas Day overload.  Even my bank has added extra security checks they’ve never had before.

What happens if your parents named you Karen at birth and you are now a student at Stanford ?  Are you banned from the campus ?  Are you a non-existent person ?  Does Karen become invisible ?  Asking for a friend.

Then there are a bunch of expressions to which the IT department objects because they are too vivid, including “beating a dead horse” and “take a stab at it.” I would say that being against these terms is stupid or crazy, but both “stupid” and “crazy” are on the list as well.

The list also includes at least a few terms that were themselves preferred over supposedly more offensive options until very recently. A good example is “survivor,” which used to appear as an acceptable substitute for “victim” but is apparently out of fashion: The IT department now prefers “person who has been impacted by.” This is a good example of how attempts to make language more politically correct almost always involve making it more cumbersome.

But the list’s runaway winner for most baffling inclusion is: “Karen,” a term that only recently entered the cultural lexicon. Instead of saying “Karen,” the IT department would like people to say “demanding or entitled White woman.” (The latter strikes these ears as significantly more derisive, but I am not a Stanford guy, er, person.)

I’ve had enough cold weather to last the rest of my life! At least I have hot water. Well, at least I have hot water in the bathroom where I take a bath. In the kitchen — well, ‘fraid not. As I discovered last night, there was only a drizzle in the kitchen sink. I had to get some of the dirty cat bowls washed, so I hand-toted hot water in gallon jugs from my bathroom to the kitchen sink. That got us OK through feeding time tonight. I can do that hand-tote until we get back to normal temperatures so I can see where/what is going to require a plumber.

Went outside and pulled up a few dead plants and added them to the compost pile.  Ice is floating in the water trough, but if the animals need a drink, they can figure out how to get water from around the edges of the ice plug.  Found one ant bed.  Sunshine is bright again today, very bright.

Started watching the new Jack Ryan series on Prime.  We’ll see how that goes.

I’ve upgraded my internet speed, installed my mesh network.  Every device connected to the assorted nodes seems to be operating perfectly and running at virtually top speed where ever located.  I had to run one ethernet cable from the kitchen to the den since I located the main router in there half way between each of the 2 extenders so that they could both connect directly rather than operating like a daisy chain.  I just ran it along the walls of a generally unused part of the house to eventually be relocated to the attic sometime maybe or maybe not.  No risk of tripping over it presently.  So as it stands, I only 2 or 3 years behind the latest in networking technology which should provide for my needs until I get 5 or 6 years behind – at least three years as it currently sits.  And most likely a lot longer.  I just can’t imagine that I would ever need a gigabit speed in this place, especially since virtually all of my equipment is way old and being propped up using linux systems.   I think my main computer started out as a Windows 2000 or something about that time.  I can run everything I’ve got all at the same time, plus add the visitors stuff over Thanksgiving, and still not notice any slow down what so ever.  But I do not have any gamers, which probably does make a big difference.

I forgot to grouse about the indoor temps during this ice-bound holiday.  Centerpoint says set temp to 70° and wear a coat. Well, my cats don’t have any coats except for their own fur, so I’ve had my thermostat set downstairs at 76° throughout the freeze. But we’ve never reached 76°, best so far has been 73° during the daytime. Pretty sure this is due to most of the warm air flowing up the stairs to the 2nd floor. I think I do have the upstairs thermostat set at 70°. I am not going upstairs to check that or anything else.

I was astonished yesterday that I rolled out of bed with no right-leg pain, and that lack of the pain I had lived with (off and on) for about 30 days has persisted through right now. I still plan to keep my bone doc appt on the 29th, whether the pain returns or not between now and then.

Well, I had a fab Christmas with 80-y.o. neighbor, his 60-y.o. son from Dallas, their Houston friend 80-y.o. Peggy, and everyone’s friend Irene who lives in the next block. Ken had cooked all sorts of festive food: roasted beef, rice pilaf, beets cooked with onions, a couple of other veggie dishes that I’ve forgotten the details, homemade biscuits, and anything you wanted to drink. I had iced tea. Everyone was too stuffed for dessert, so there was a 1-hour break followed by pie selection. Ken had purchased 3 exotic pies but everyone chose the peanut butter pie. Yuh, compared to pecan pie.

    Camaraderie was 100%.

Fielded a couple more phone calls and a couple more text messages.  I’m about played out, but I’ve got to stay up until later so I won’t get up early in the morning again.  All the animals dropped by for their after sunset snack at the cat food bowl – 2 cats, 2 foxes, 2 possums that I’ve seen so far.  Some of the girls out back were getting a drink of water from the trough just before sunset, so it looked like they were able to get enough water out of the ice to make it worth their while.  I saw a lonely solo Axis doe out back earlier, so I imagine she has a fawn stashed out there somewhere.  The Axis do not have a season like the white tails do – they reproduce all year long.

Christmas is just about over now, so we can break out the champagne, party hats, and horns and start warming up for the new year.  I’ll be warming up by going back to the eye doctor in a couple of days to see about glasses.  OK, more later before I turn in, if I’m able.

We had a nice Christmas, just my wife and me until about 3, sister showed up and later I fixed an easy meal of Texas Tamales, rice N beans. I think this is the first time ever that we didn’t have a big meal on Christmas day. When the wife was getting out the Christmas decorations a couple of weeks ago she found a Jig Saw puzzle that she got when the kids came over so this morning she started working on it but got distracted so when sister showed up they both started on it and almost finished it before supper. They both like Jig Saw puzzles and daughter is a world champion with them.

It’s been a marvelous Christmas Day – starting with a wonderful sermon at church, then we “kidnapped” my singing partner from church, and went to the coast – saw bunches of birds at the Texas City dike, avoided the remnants of a car wreck at the entrance to our favorite Christmas dinner place “Kelley’s” at LaMarque – a place filled with wonderful food, and fond memories of many dinners with Squawk’s Dad, and Mom…And were blessed with the news that our subdivision’s water supply has been fixed (we’ve not had ours on for several days due to the freeze – and didn’t know until dinner last nite with baby bro and his lovely wife that they’ve not had water either due to some damage to the supply tanks or something… ) so tomorrow, when the sun comes up and the air warms, we can have running water again… Praying that all you marvelous occupants of the couch have been at least half as blessed as we have been on this wonderful Christmas Day

Today was a wonderful Christmas for us, quiet with just the right amount of outside stuff to look at after lunch. Lunch was leftovers from yesterday with some additions from odds and ends hanging around waiting to be noticed.  We dined out for our Christmas dinner yesterday at noon and brought a lot of it home for today.

We called spouse’s brother and wife who live in a suburb of Madison, WI late this afternoon.  They had 4″ of snow two days in a row so it was a very white Christmas for them.  All is well with them, and there is good news that all is still well with Ozzie, who is a coming-on-13 year-old black Labrador that is on heart medication. He is just a bit slower of course because of his advanced age. Wonderful dog.  All is well with the kinfolk, too. 🙂

And we were pleased that the Packers defeated the Dolphins in Miami today.  The temp at game time was 46 degrees there, as Florida also got some of the cold Siberian stuff like we did.  We were rather startled to see  so many home team players wearing long-sleeve shirts.  That was before we found out what the temp was.
