First?? I didn’t check in yesterday but we made it home, rolled in at 1:30 Pm after a leisurely 4 and a half hour run. I think these short trips are spoiling me. I didn’t see nearly as many State Troopers on the way back as up. BTW; Gas was $3.07 in B’Ham. lowest I’ve seen it. We filled up in Jasper, on the way up for $3.17 and $3.27 is about the lowest here. But it’s the weekend, enjoy.

I had problems with the way the image was coded to prevent it being used.  I finally figured out a trick to work around it.  It is an 77 year old still shot from a movie so I don’t think any copyright applies.

I just don’t understand how you can live up in the frozen north.

It is simple. You go from your heated house to your heated garage, get into your preheated truck and drive to wherever the is heated and hope like heck that you don’t get stuck in the ditch somewhere.

I carry tire chains, shovel, extra clothes and warm boots, gloves. And stay home a lot. ; )

I have the same problem here.  I have to watch one when she’s out of the house.  And western movies – forget it.

Frigid weather and snow is in our future, but right now we are enjoying a very unusual Indian summer and it’s blue skies and 66 degrees here.  We’ve had a big snowstorm on Halloween here in the past.

I’m having hot cocoa with those tiny marshmallows. I have a bowl of cottage cheese with fruit for breakfast — going on 15 years now. The fruit is a banana with something like grapes or strawberries, but yesterday I bought raspberries and blueberries. Having raspberries today, but they are so tart I had to sprinkle a sweetener packet on them.

The Splendora Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a traffic stop on US Highway 59 near Kingsport Dr. During the investigation, the driver, Clint Pribyl, 43 of 3002 Autumn Park Ct. in Friendswood was found to be in Possession of a Firearm and a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine). ” Thus, the Texas Secretary of State’s Office and the Texas Attorney General’s Office announced on Oct. 18 that they would send inspectors, security trainers, and legal advisers to Harris County to try to ensure the giant county runs its November election competently and fairly.

But in a letter to the Biden Justice Department dated Oct. 20, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo claim the state of Texas’s plan to send in election inspectors amounts to an effort to “disrupt and intimidate local election workers.” Further, they claim, the state intends to ‘chill voters’ trust in the election process.’ “

We got 6 – 8 inches of snow today, which isn’t too bad. But the wind was blowing upwards of 28 mph. I cleared a 100′ path to the coop with the snowblower, then helped son with the dozer for 10 minutes and the whole path I cleared was blown in again. I have to find my snow fence and get that up. How about that? Wife’s birthday present arrived about 4:30, it was supposed to be here on Monday but I was in the den and heard a horn toot. I looked out and saw a Dodge 1 ton with another Dodge pickup on the trailer he was pulling and I knew that the Vette had arrived. It’s 2008 with the 6.2L 410 HP motor so it’s not a romper stomper but it will get out of it’s own way. I’ll explain more later but this was the Vette that daughter bought when she graduated from college. Remember she had 2 Z 28’s before it. She has been wanting to make a deal to give it to her mom but I think she was having second thoughts since this project has been “in work” for over 2 years. SO we split the value and I paid half what she could sell it for and had it shipped over here. BTW; It went up in value $8K after COVID. I think that the wife was somewhat excited and really surprised, she had no clue. 😉

Mattress Mack Wins $75 Million, Biggest Win in Sports Betting History

In July, he wagered $2 million at BetMGM at 5/1, $2 million at Barstool at 5.3/1 (+533) and $1 million each at Unibet and Betfred, also at 5/1.

Caesars takes the biggest hit from Mack’s win, paying out $30 million.

“What can we say? We just wrote the biggest check in sports betting history to Mattress Mack for $30,000,000. Would we do it all again? You bet,” Ken Fuchs, the COO of Caesars Digital, said. “While Mack may have won this round on the field, we’re proud of how we teamed up to support first responders and military veterans in Houston, Philly and Atlantic City. And to Mack — we tip our Astros cap — and remind him that he can now support his Texans and Rockets … both attractively priced at +100000 to win a championship. The Astros are also currently +550 to win next year’s Fall Classic.”

  69. El Gordo Avatar

Lots of good football to watch today, and then the Stros win too.  I’ve always been an LSU fan simply because I loved playing them in college, and there is just no way you can be in a bad move around a bunch of coon azzez.  Aggies continue their dismal season logging another loss – hard times down on rhe lower Brazos River.  TCU remains undefeated and should move up a couple of notches in the next poll.  Baylor took care of Texas Tech, while the SMU ponies out ran the Cougars in what has to be some record setting 6 man football type scoring.  Texas was playing up in some corn field somewhere and apparently they don’t have wire services up there yet to try to get the score.

    Twitter, cut in half.

    Also suck it up buttercup;

After the layoffs, we asked some of the employees who had been cut what they made of the process. They told us that they had been struck by the cruelty: of ordering people to work around the clock for a week, never speaking to them, then firing them in the middle of the night, no matter what it might mean for an employee’s pregnancy or work visa or basic emotional state.

More than anything they were struck by the fact that the world’s richest man, who seems to revel in attention on the platform they had made for him, had not once deigned to speak to them.

“It’ll stick with me forever that he never addressed the employees even once before firing half of us,” one longtime employee who was laid off today told me. (Former employees spoke on condition of anonymity for fear that giving their names could affect their severance packages). “Downright cowardly that he couldn’t bring himself to sign his name to the layoff email.”

I’m trying to train my eyes to work without wearing my cheater glasses.  Overall, I have much better vision than before the surgery, but when I blink or change from looking at one object to another it seems to takea brief period for my eyes to refocus.  Cheater magnifiers seem to blur the image even more sometimes, while at other times seem to help a little bit.  I go back to the eye doc on the 21st, and I’m assuming that they will do another work up to see if I need corrective lenses which I probably will.  In fact, I think these plastic lenses are focused at a distance and are not for close up reading and such in the first place.  In any event, I think I have to teach my brain how to read the incoming signals and interpret them properly after years of teaching it how to work with poor vision.  The bright still gives me problems, and as usual, it’s another cloudless sky out there today and extremely bright as the fall angle seems to have some effect too.  No place to hide from the bright sunlight.  Reading the smaller print and stuff in italics is completely out of the question though.  A magnifying glass helps with the small print, as it did when I went to vote and could not read the ballot without one.  Hopefully things will improve as I re-learn how to read this stuff.

Watching TV last night I could not tell if the TV would occasionally blur the image or if it was my eyes. Typically the TV images that I get are very sharp, but since it is all internet driven, the images do slow down sometimes. Netflix used to have some sort of visual guide to demonstrate how the internet speed affects the picture quality etc.

Yesterday in Sedalia, Missouri, the VanDerBrink Auction company sold off a huge collection of classic motorcycles, parts and memorabilia.

Doug Wothke knows old motorcycles and how to keep them running.

The Alabamian has ridden classic bikes around the world four times, starting in 2006 on a 1948 Indian Chief.

Indians and Harley Davidsons from the early part of the 20th century are his favorites.

He has a collection of over 70 bikes and stores of parts for them.

He and a colleague recently purchased the estate of California motorcycle builder M.F. Eagan, who worked with the likes of custom bike artist Von Dutch and Steve McQueen, which filled nine shipping containers with historic parts, bikes and memorabilia.

What they didn’t keep is now being auctioned at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia on November 5 by VanDerBrink Auctions. “

This would have been a fun auction to go to.

I heard somebody on the radio refer to this Dusty Baker story that occurred in 2020 and now I’ve found it.

” ‘At the beginning of this journey, you know, I didn’t even have a job, and I interviewed with the Phillies,” Baker said in his press conference after Game 6 of the ALCS. “They went with Joe Girardi. And then my son told me in his infinite wisdom, he goes, ‘Dad, maybe that job wasn’t yours, and this is a better job.’ I hate that A.J. Hinch lost his job in the manner that he did, but I inherited a good team, much like Sparky Anderson inherited the Big Red Machine.”

Baker referenced his son Darren, a 22-year-old prospect in the Washington Nationals organization. In a profile on Baker for The Athletic, Claire Smith went into detail on how Darren helped Dusty get through his disappointment after missing out on the job in Philadelphia.

“He said perhaps I wasn’t supposed to have that opportunity, that perhaps it wasn’t the best place for me,” Baker told Smith. ‘I mean, that’s my son telling me what I’ve always believed, that maybe I have to wait to be where I was meant to be. That’s my son, with his beautiful knowledge and wisdom. He said maybe God’s got a better job, a better plan for me. A week later I was called by the Astros.’ “

Texpat I agree the Fox Sports coverage of the World Series could have been better. I found myself tuning out the inane comments made by those guys. Player stats and history are fine, but half the time those guys wandered off and talked about superfluous garbage.

Another thing that bothered the heck out of me was the extreme close ups of players. The ones where a head filled the entire screen. The producer calling the camera shots was also terrible. For example the extreme close up and then the person needs to blow their nose. They actually did that to Dusty by holding the camera on him for three seconds before switching cameras. I fully understand as a guy that if you are wearing a cup that you need to adjust it from time to time, but do we need a close up of the batters making adjustments in the batter’s box?

    Amen.

The most infuriating part of the coverage was the most horrendous camera production I’ve ever seen in a championship series.  At least 90% of camera time was on the pitcher or the batter at home plate.  The only time you ever saw a camera shot of the field, the defensive set or defensive players was when they made a catch or caught a throw at a base.  Baseball is a lot more than pitchers, batters and catchers.  I want to see what is happening on the field as much as possible and whoever produced these games ought to be fired.

Also, Katfish is right about the commentary.  It’s fine to throw in a bit or two about pitching strategies and tactics, but they would wander off about their previous pro careers and ramble on as if they were two guys alone having a beer and completely forgot they were announcing a World Series and that nobody gives a damn about their old war stories.

I made it back into town in time to get to church for mass.

First, the crowds around the stadium were thicker than for the games, IMO.  they had started early in the day, and I met one of the ushers guarding the parking lot.  It seems that the fans had decided they could take over our parking lot, leaving our parishioners without parking spaces.  My friend said they had to go to the stadium and announce that we’d be towing cars, to get some availability for our folks.

Next up, we had our chuckles as the knuckleheads would drive by the church (across from the stadium) with their speakers blasting “We Are the Champions” at ear bleed volumes, to the cheering of the fans on the sidewalk.

And, Oh, did Fr. Felix get riled up again. He gets pretty het up when discussing abortion and such.  He didn’t advocate for or against any party or politician.  Remember this man is shorter than I am*, but when he gets up there on the ambo I think he grows a couple of inches.  He started in as usual on our scripture readings for the day, which dealt with “giving Caesar what is Caesar’s” that led into dealing with government and our role in society. He began talking about the elections, and how we NEEDED to get out there and VOTE!  How abortion is evil, no DIABOLICAL!  And then he made this point: “If they do this to innocent life in the womb, what do you think they’ll do to you if they get control of YOU?!”  Then he went on to include dialogue on the mutilation of children and the destruction of our families.  I’m glad he stopped when he did, before he stroked out.

I’m glad Hammie talked me into changing parishes.

    * When our kids were little one lady we tried out for babysitting had a little boy who began maturing at age 8.  Turns out he did not have the 1/10,000 type of malady in which the pituitary gland kicks off early, he got the 1/10,000,000 (her numbers, not mine) version where both pituitary and the gonads both kicked off early.  Instead of pills to block the hormones, the poor boy had to have four shots a day.  But I learned from Cindy that the really short people in our lives are probably those folks who didn’t get the medication to block puberty, and thus they lost all of the height they would have developed in those lost years before puberty.  I’m guessing Fr. Felix is one of those men who got shortchanged from those 4 or 5 years of lost prepubescence time.

The hipsters are freaking out in Austin and running to Boston and Portland.

” Austin Has Been Invaded by Texas

This summer, that anxiety pervaded a stratum of liberal Austin, namely women, LGBTQ+ folks, parents, and people of color who fear a future in Texas and have the means to escape. The overturning of Roe seemed to remove the last obstacle in the state’s march to the far right, which is likely to be cemented in the upcoming election where Beto O’Rourke is way behind Abbott. While the Democratic mayor and the liberal city council institute token measures such as decriminalizing abortion, it’s cold comfort. One 25-year-old woman said she had her tubes tied, fearing the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy. One couple may relocate to the Northeast to carry out their pregnancy. Some job candidates are refusing to relocate. At Stettin’s party, his friend Jeff swiped open his phone to a note entitled “New Austin Cities” — a list of places that are what Austin used to be to him before he moved here from New York. It read, “Pittsburgh, Durham, Boise, Columbus, Jackson Hole, Chattanooga. Factors: Climate change, demographics, economy, location, taxes, nature, weather.” He plans to stick it out at least for now. “Global warming in the next ten years,” he said. ‘That’s gonna be f***ing real.’ “

    Good Sunday Afternoon, Hamsters,

I had cardiac surgery on Friday to correct obstructions of the interior carotid artery, the one that goes up to the head and brain.  The cardiac docs though at first it was only one blockage, but it turned out to be two.  So I now have stents to keep them open.  Came home late yesterday afternoon not totally over the effects of the anesthesia.  Lots of naps today and I feel much better but still need my cane to balance at times walking around the house.

Surgery was at Houston Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land. It is absolutely a first-class place, and it keeps growing. There was a 3rd-year cardiology medical student at Baylor College of Medicine as part of the group, as Baylor and Methodist work together.  He came to visit me several times at the hospital to check on how I was doing.  I had told him he was welcome as a member of my medical care group to observe and ask questions and see what he needed to see, as learning from books goes only so far and is not as good as learning from seeing real patients. I think that made his day. 🙂

    Texpat and all dear Hamsters,

Did not want to upset y’all by previous notice of the surgery because anything connected with the heart sounds serious and at times becomes very serious very fast.  Thank you all for prayers for me!  I’m 81 now and am aiming for 90, as my dear Mom made it to 90 and passed away two weeks after that birthday.  Heart issues run in her family, and she had two bypass operations at an advanced age.  Many of her male and female siblings also had heart issues.  She was second to the youngest child who lived in that family of 11 kids who survived infancy.  The last two babies died shortly after birth, 11 survived to adulthood.  Mom was born in 1911.  My Dad was born in 1906.  Spouse is 82 and does not look his age.  I don’t look my age either.  Guess that is owing to Viking ancestors far back in both our pedigrees when Vikings roamed the European world.

And also it helps to stay out of the sun longer than the 10 minutes required to get your daily dose of vitamin D. 🙂
