Girl With a Bottle of Water

By Helen Masacz, 2008, Oil on Board

I was certain, at first, this was a photograph.  The most striking thing about this painting is the hand, wrist and shoulder images captured through the light refracted in the water bottle.  Such patient talent.

Thanks Squawk for lifting this site out of the quick sand… or whatever it sank into.

This random comment is for Texpat who called me out for not commenting eventhough my fingers are not broken.

Gotta get back to it. I’m tired though since I woke up early to talk to some engineers in Mumbai.

    OOOOOooooh!  Another thread!

I’ve been on the “problem” thread.

Okay, moving my couch cushions around to accommodate the new space.

Greenpeace Admits Plastic Recycling Does Not Work, Harms Environment

I don’t like just throwing plastic away, because I don’t like waste, and I prefer not to pollute if there is another option.  I reuse my plastic bottles when I can.  I try to buy stuff with reduced packaging.  I used to bring my own “doggie bag” containers with me to restaurants so I didn’t have to deal with the styrofoam trays that always leaked and didn’t keep the food fresh anyway.

I compost my paper.  I remember Penn and Teller’s video on how really bad it is to recycle paper.  The chemicals, energy, etc., involved are worse than making it new.  So I compost.

I like all my glass jars.  They can be reused almost ad infinitum, and then recycled.

The only thing that I’ve heard that is really feasible as an industry is metal recycling, especially aluminum.

But the tree hugging religious fanatics don’t realize that and like having the power and/or authority to tell us how to behave.  There’s no way we can get rid of plastics in this world.  If we do, a lot of things go away: cell phones, computers, sterile hospital instruments, a lot of household items, modern cars…

I’ve heard that there’s research on microbes that eat plastic.  As long as that’s all they eat, I can certainly endorse that endeavor.
