Weekend Open Comments

Behold the Pillars of Creation as photographed by the new, enormous James Webb Space Telescope.

We have seen this image before from the Hubble Telescope, but nothing like this clarity and resolution.

” In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.   And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.  And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.  And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. “

Yup, I remember that one well we tested the Hubble electronics @ Bld 49 along with the “Pair of Glasses” (COSTAR) that was sent up to correct Hubble’s vision. We also tested various parts of the James Webb and some of that stuff was huge.

    From NASA;

Replacing the mirror was not practical, so the best solution was to build replacement instruments that fixed the flaw much the same way a pair of glasses correct the vision of a near-sighted person. The corrective optics and new instruments were built and installed on Hubble by spacewalking astronauts during a shuttle mission in 1993. The Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) instrument, about the size of a telephone booth, placed into Hubble five pairs of corrective mirrors that countered the effects of the flaw.

Good memories, I had a good run at the Rocket Ranch. BUTT It’s the weekend to to hit the ground running and I’m sorta’ late.

I read about it when it first happened and thought surely this can’t sustain.  At least this time good guys prevailed, but what about other individuals and organizations across the country who don’t enjoy the friends these women in Alabama are fortunate to have.  The Left has no problem crushing people and grinding their lives into dust.

    From Shannon’s #1;

Judge Burken warned the department about the dire consequences of its misbehavior:

Administrations change every four years, or at least every eight. Is the new standard going to be that these kind of subpoenas go out in legislation to any advocacy organization, and they want emails to their members, they want social media posts, they want things that the group just considered in their advocacy?…Is that where you think the Department of Justice thinks we need to go in this country? Because I promise you this, at some point this will be aimed at the Southern Poverty Law [Center] and the ACLU, and their efforts, as well. Is this where we need to go?

It is clear that subpoenas like this one are intended to harass those who are on the conservative side of policy debates in order to chill their speech, deter their active participation in the democratic, legislative process, and discourage citizens from contributing to or otherwise affiliating with organizations like the Eagle Forum.

Such abusive discovery threatens the First Amendment rights of membership organizations to engage in free speech, associate with others who share their beliefs, and speak to their elected representatives and other government officials about public policy issues that concern them.

    Emphasis mine.

Folks who block roadways so they can protest and/or throw temper tantrums should be held legally liable for damages – and death.

Climate protesters in England are being accused of having “blood on their hands” after their protest scaling a bridge caused a traffic jam that reportedly kept first responders from quickly tending to two crash victims who died.

“The eco-warriors may have thought it was an innocent protest, but they’ve got blood on their hands,” Mark Heap, 55, told the Daily Mail after suffering a broken back and a broken leg on Monday when he stopped to help a stranded motorist and was struck by a speeding car that was attempting to avoid a traffic jam caused by climate protesters who had scaled England’s Queen Elizabeth II bridge

Hamsters, a bright and beautiful good morning to you.

It seems the Dems are mindlessly set on throwing everything including every kitchen sink they can grab to maximize what power they still have to try to ruin the conservative opposition before the election on Nov. 8th.   Such insanely stupid antics do nothing other than enrage much of the electorate, including former Democrats who have wisely abandoned that ship for good.  Dumb and dumber. Ye gods and little fishes, what are they thinking?

There’s historical precedent for issuing subpoenas to both sitting and former presidents. SCOTUS has ruled several times both sitting and former presidents are subject to subpoenas like any other citizen.  They can assert executive privilege to try and quash the action, but they are not immune to it.

However, I don’t believe any former president outside of Nixon has been threatened with arrest, especially for contempt of Congress.  There was a quiet deal to let Nixon resign and walk out without being indicted.  Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon much to fury of the Left, but it was the right thing to do.

I am very concerned about what the reaction will be to an arrest warrant for Trump.  Biden, the DOJ and the fraudulent J6 Committee have been trying to bait the Right into a violent reaction for a year and a half.  They are convinced there are millions of armed Trump supporters out there locked and loaded, ready to unleash wholesale slaughter of Democrats across the nation.  They were sure the Mar-a-Lago raid would do the trick.  The Left’s delusion is the Right will eventually react like the Left did with the George Floyd riots and mayhem because that is the way they think and project it upon their enemies.  Biden & Co. would love to be able to declare martial law, suspend the elections and expand the J6 Committee into a massive Star Chamber trial of half the American people.

Surprise, surprise, I’m going to make a prediction.

In 2023, Hunter Biden gets indicted.  At some point, his father will give him a full pardon to try and stanch the eventual exposure of his own criminal acts.  Kamala will resign or vanish for some reason, Newsom will be drafted into VP office and then Joe will be forced out for the pardon making Governor Hairdo the new incumbent for 2024.

  13. Tedtam Avatar

Hubby and I were just discussing Biden-Harris-Speaker succession.

If Biden (is forced to) step down, I think Harris would pee her pants and resign.  I don’t think she ever wanted to become president and the idea of actually making an important decision is more than she could handle.

  14. Super Dave Avatar

Texpat, I agree, I’ve been thinking about several scenarios to (A) get rid of Biden, (easy) and (B) get rid of Heels-Up (hard). I do think Newsom will be their choice and they have to get him in without an election since he can’t win the general election but might prevail in the next election if he is POTUS. With all the crap about Hunter coming out now, NOT years ago, I think they’ll definitely use it again the Doddering Old Fool. That said; I wonder how they’ll get rid of the first female, check, black, check, VP? Will they buy here off? Not likely. Put her on the Supreme Court or give her a nice Ambassadorship? You know that all the Democrat think tanks are working this 24-7.

If I weren’t planning on hanging out with my sisters today….BCS is hosting a craft show for the sisters at her place.  She tried to poke me emotionally recently (I do recall letting her know I thought she was “emotionally untrustworthy,” and that still stands), but being with my other sisters makes it safer for me to enjoy her company.  She and I really do get along, until she decides we don’t.  I try to love her where she is, forgive her attempts to trample my feelings, and enjoy what moments I can with her.  So, with my other siblings there, she’s not likely to offend.  And I do enjoy my sisters’ company.

It doesn’t happen often, so I’ll have to miss hearing Childers’ speech.  Maybe I can catch it later on replay.

From the C&C, Fauci is going to be deposed!

In the best news of 2022, and I’m not exaggerating, yesterday a federal court in Louisiana overruled the federal government’s objections, ordered Dr. Fauci and other government officials to sit for depositions under oath, and said “The Court sees the importance of having Dr. Fauci make statements under oath as it relates to the issues of this matter.”

Finally! That little weasel is going to have to answer some hard questions!

The lawsuit, filed by the State of Missouri, alleges that Fauci and other government officials engaged in a corrupt scheme to deploy the full might of the U.S. government to illegally suppress Americans’ free speech during the pandemic.

Missouri’s deposition requests were asking the Court for a lot. First of all, there’s a doctrine protecting public officials from being deposed except under exceptional circumstances.

    /snip

But the court found sufficient ‘extraordinary cause’ to overrule BOTH doctrines. So not only will Missouri get to depose Fauci and the others, but Missouri will be allowed to set the depositions at the speed of science.

Note the Court’s use of the word, “prove,” above. The judge wasn’t just saying Missouri’d “alleged” Fauci was involved in censorship. Instead, the Court said the publicly-available emails “prove” it. That’s a galaxy of difference. [emphasis mine]

Wow.  Here’s hoping for more public spanking.

It appears that the Fetterman campaign is buying influencers to help bolster his flagging poll numbers.

If you click the ‘NewBlueAction’ link, you’ll see a little form you can fill out for a chance to earn a quick $900 smackers, for trying to ‘influence’ your friends and neighbors into voting for Lumpy.

    /snip

I tried to find out who’s behind this expenditure of campaign funds. But visiting http://www.newblueaction.org was just more frustration, since the link goes nowhere. Nor can you find any link on the site disclosing its ownership or anything.

So the whole thing MUST be totally legit.

So, Childers threw his hat into the ring, for fun:

Since it must be a lot of hard, boring work slogging through all the applications, I think they’d enjoy receiving some well-crafted humor in their applications this morning.

I signed up as Joseph Bythen. So.

    The guy cracks me up.

  19. Tedtam Avatar

And then Childers goes into discussion of election polls:

As the week wound down, the polls favoring democrats tripped and fell down the political stairs. Maybe ‘suddenly and unexpectedly collapsed’ would be a better way to describe it. After weeks and months of cheerful polls that either favored democrats or showed democrats closing with Republicans, all of a sudden, two weeks before the election, the pollsters’ predictions are mysteriously switching sides.

As are the betting markets: [followed by charts and discussion of the blue/red flip in the polls]

I heard a discussion on the radio some time ago about how the (liberal) polls lean left until closer to the election, when they suddenly start to get more honest, because the polling companies need to retain some kind of business cred.  If they keep predicting a false red win and then get shown up at the polls, their services are seen as less reliable; but if they start being more honest closer to the election, then they can point to their numbers and say “See, we did get it right(er)!”

Childers’ discussion of the poll flipping and flopping is, as usual, entertaining to read.  It seems Obama has actually been dragged out the closet (pun intended) to cut an ad for Fetterman.  TBO has been trying to remain the puppet master in the shadows, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

    And more shenanigans in China:

You might recall a mysterious story I reported last month about tons of flights being cancelled around Beijing, along with independent video showing military assets headed INTO the capital. Yesterday, former Chinese leader Hu Jintao was mysteriously and publicly escorted out of the Great Hall of the People ahead of an expected speech by President Xi at the end of the annual Communist Party Congress.

Hu Jintao looked somewhat … unenthusiastic about going along with those two nicely-dressed gentlemen, who probably worked as interviewers for shady influence-buying operations when they were in college.

What I know about communism suggests we won’t be seeing Mr. Hu again. Not anytime soon. Maybe not ever. Can you say, “purge?”

Leora Levy’s mother and grandparents fled Lithuania and the Nazis in 1940 to Cuba.  Leora was born there in 1957 and then her family had to flee the communists in Cuba in 1960.  They came to Connecticut and now she is close to beating Danang Dick Blumenthal for the Senate seat in that state.  I just heard her interviewed on Larry Kudlow’s Saturday radio show and she is really impressive.  Fluent in Spanish with her Cuban Jewish heritage, Levy is running very strong among all the Latino voters in the Nutmeg State.  The latest poll has her within a 5 point striking distance and Levy says her internal polling shows it much closer.

I believe the whole January 6th episode on Capitol Hill was largely a setup.  Trump’s clumsy handling of the situation aside, the bumbling Capitol Police, arrogant DC mayor & PD plus Pelosi’s refusal to allow National Guard deployment around the Capitol was a plan to incite and encourage the chaotic madness.  They wanted it to happen and the crowd played right into their hands.

The potential arrest of former president Trump is just another tactical step to provoke the Right into doing some really stupid things.  It hasn’t worked so far and I’m hoping it doesn’t now.  The Democrats want some kind of violent, high profile incident(s) by MAGA supporters so they can say, “We told you so, these people are a threat to our democracy and they need to be banished from American life.”

I think Texas needs to start suing all these folks for misappropriating our state name.  It’s really getting out of hand.  It’s illegal in Europe for anyone to label their sparkling wine as champagne unless it comes from the region of Champagne.  Texas needs something like that to protect it’s reputation.

” Californian Phillip White has a problem. He’s been hoodwinked by supposedly misleading labels into buying products he’d otherwise pass on. As a result, the litigious White has filed a class-action lawsuit against a manufacturer claiming damages for its deceptive branding.

Earlier this month, White made a splash in the headlines with a lawsuit targeting the makers of Texas Pete Hot Sauce for allegedly trying to pass off theirs as an authentic product of the Lone Star State, when, in fact, it’s Louisiana-style hot sauce made in North Carolina.

Had White known it was from North Carolina, his September lawsuit claims, he would have left it on the shelf at a Los Angeles Ralphs grocery store instead of shelling out $3 for it. Now having learned that “there is nothing ‘Texas’ about Texas Pete,” White is demanding hot sauce maker T.W. Garner Food Company compensate him, and all other similarly deceived consumers, for their ill-gotten gains. “

Good article by Houstonian Charles Blain, colleague of Joel Kotkin, at City Journal.

” The governor’s contest may get more press, but the battle for Harris County Judge may be a better indicator of the Lone Star State’s political trajectory.

National pundits opining on Texas elections say that the governor’s race is the one to watch, pitting incumbent Republican Greg Abbott against his Democratic challenger, former congressman Beto O’Rourke. But Texans themselves are perhaps even more focused on the race for Harris County Judge—an elected office, whose occupant, despite the job title, serves as the de facto mayor of the largest county in Texas (third largest in the nation and home to Houston), which often finds itself in the crosshairs of Republican state lawmakers.

Thus far, the race has been a tug-of-war between national and local issues. The Democratic incumbent, Lina Hidalgo, has pressed the issue of abortion and gun control, despite her office’s lack of any oversight, legislative capacity, or regulatory authority on these issues. Her Republican opponent, Alexandra Del Moral Mealer, has campaigned on crime and public safety, stressing the county judge’s responsibility for overseeing the area’s criminal-justice system. “

We all were lamenting how our family has splintered.  Cousins don’t know cousins.  My nieces and nephews don’t know their second cousins.  I would not recognize at all some of my siblings’ kids.  I’m hoping we can make this happen.

TexMo mentioned wondering how this whole transgender agenda seemed to have seized the attention of the culture so suddenly.  There are surely numerous reasons because human behavior movements, moral or immoral, are both simple and complex.  Here is one man’s theory.  It is certainly plausible and yet the roots of human depravity and evilness are as ancient as mankind and unfortunately continue to manifest throughout history.

” Gnosticism Is the Ancient Heretical Ideology Behind Today’s Transgenderism and Abortion Movements

The Gnostic belief that the soul is divorced from the body may explain progressive support for both transgenderism and abortion. It’s not a coincidence that those who believe that gender identity is divorced from biological reality are also likely to believe that a human fetus is not a human being. Both are at odds with basic biology and the Judeo-Christian roots of our civilization but congruent with the dogmas of the ancient mystical faith of Gnosticism.

Gnosticism is an esoteric religious movement with Platonic and Pagan influences that grew out of early Christian and Jewish sects beginning in the 1st century AD. Though regarded as heresy by the majority of Christians and Jews, Gnostic beliefs have influenced various religious sects, ideologies and philosophers over the last 2,000 years. More recently, and relevantly, Gnosticism served as the foundation for the ideas of Hegel, Marx, Marcuse and other neo-Marxists; and by extension, has substantially influenced the current-day mainstream left. “

The Myth of the Nonviolent Drug Offender

After President Biden pardoned Americans convicted of federal marijuana possession last week, reform advocates praised his action as a “historic” step away from mass incarceration, while critics lamented it as another blow to public safety. The truth is somewhat less momentous: the pardons affect only about 6,500 people, none of whom is currently in prison, and drug crimes account for only a small portion of America’s prison population.

The extreme reactions on both sides are consistent with the public’s warped perceptions of the effects of drug enforcement on our criminal-justice system, which activists and the media have propagated through books like Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow and documentaries like 13th.

    and,

Even the claim that people imprisoned for “nonviolent” crimes are distinct from the rest of the criminal population is suspect. A 2021 Bureau of Justice Statistics report found that people released from prison for drug crimes were actually more likely to be re-arrested for a violent offense than people released for homicide or sexual assault. “

    RE: Criminal Justice Reform

This is a year old related article by the same author in my 8:48 AM comment.  He writes about programs that were promoted by our old LST friend in Austin, Grits For Breakfast, who was very active in getting parole and probation reforms enacted in Texas that were proving to be very effective in reducing recidivism until this last Soros-induced crime wave.

” This approach to policy directly aligns the incentives of the government with what is best for the public, and in doing so, it creates space for innovation. Instead of mandating specific programs that may or may not work, performance-based funding systems allow new ideas to bubble from the bottom up and direct resources toward the ideas that achieve the best results.

Over the last 15 years, state legislators have successfully applied this approach to probation systems in states as diverse as Arizona, California, Illinois, and Texas — and with impressive results. After Arizona started offering incentives to its probation departments, revocations to prison dropped by 31%at the same time as the state’s crime rate fell by more than 25%. Meta-analyses of 17 performance-based probation reforms by the Urban Instituteand the Cicero Instituteboth found that every policy reduced prison populations or slowed prison population growth while improving public safety.

About 45% of people admitted to prison were already on probation or parole. Therefore, improving outcomes through performance-based funding policies would have a massive impact on incarceration levels and is thereby a viable long-term COVID-19 mitigation strategy. “

Everybody can alter their game day plans. It’s already raining in the Bronx and I don’t see even a slight chance for baseball until Wednesday.  Monday is definitely out and Tuesday looks grim.

” As the Iranian regime violently cracks down on growing nationwide protests, lawmakers’ attention is again on the atrocities committed at the hands of the Iranian regime. Yet not a single House Democrat has lent support to legislation that would sanction Iran’s supreme leader and his inner circle for mass human rights crimes, according to senior congressional sources familiar with the matter.

The bill, dubbed the Mahsa Amini Act after the 22-year-old Iranian woman who was killed by the regime’s morality police for improperly wearing her head covering, would “impose sanctions on the supreme leader of Iran and the president of Iran and their respective offices for human rights abuses and support for terrorism,” according to a copy of the measure obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. Amini’s murder last month sparked nationwide anti-regime protests that threaten to topple the hardline Iranian government, which has reacted to the demonstrations with more violence, including beating, imprisoning, and shooting protesters.

The Republican-led bill was circulated to every single Democratic House office, but not a single one has yet to cosponsor the bill, two senior Republican congressional aides told the Free Beacon.

Texpat that’s a shame about the weather up there. I really think the Astros taking three games to none has a demoralizing effect on the Yanks. A two or three day delay gives ample time for several pep talks from the coaching staff.

We’ll see how much media exposure this gets or whether Fauci and his colleagues try to smother it.

” The FDA is in need of structural and cultural changes to bring the agency in line with its original mission of acting as an independent government regulator of the food and drug industries, according to a panel of experts.

Their call for change rested on the “eroded” reputation of the FDA as the gold standard in evaluating drugs, which has been weakened over recent decades by legislation, regulations, external pressures, and internal practices, argued Sharon Batt, PhD, of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, of Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., in a report released by PharmedOut, a project from Georgetown University’s department of pharmacology and physiology. “

I’m not looking forward to the Astros playing in Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park.  With all these delays the World Series might end up with sleet and snow.  There is no roof in Philly.

Sigh, Fall is a tricky season with quick weather changes that ruin outdoor plans or make it absolutely miserable if the show must go on.  Rest up, Astros.

But football goes on regardless of weather it seems,  except for lightning in the area.

Morning, chickadees. I’ve been trying for several days to print a file to send to the Bettencourt company that reviews & protests increases in my Harris County property taxes. It wasn’t getting printed and I couldn’t tell what was wrong. But about the first thing I need to do on Sunday mornings is to use the printer to enlarge the sudoku puzzle clipped from the HouChron. This is done by selecting certain settings on the control panel for the printer itself. Boy, was that eye-opening. Poor old printer complains directly that there is something wrong with the paper tray. I fiddled with it for a bit w/o solving the problem, and I wanted to get going on the puzzle and drink my big coffee. It’s been years since I had to work the itty bitty puzzle on which I would pencil in on a tiny square up to 9 possible values. BUT, I got ‘er done.

We’ve talked about this in past seasons but it continues to amaze the MLB long and storied history the most seemingly common streaks/plays make history.

Altuve entered Game 3 in a 0 for 23 rut — it was the longest hitless streak to begin a postseason in baseball history — and extended it to 0 for 25 before dunking a one-out double to right field with one out in the fifth inning. That was Altuve’s longest hitless streak of 2022, regular season included.

Packers game is not going well at all.  Thinking that a change ought to be made and let Aaron Rogers do the play calling, since every so often when he does change the call in the huddle, things work well.  The coach’s calls this season have not been up to par with the last season….  The natives (fans) are becoming very restless.

H.E.B. had rib eye roasts pretty cheap around Christmas time last year, never got around to do anything with it so I figured I better so last week thawed it out and cut it up in steaks. Not great grade but it’s beef! Grilled them and froze the three we didn’t eat. Warming up a second batch for tonight. And watch the Yankees get rained on I guess.

If the batter strikes out, hits home plate hard and asks the umpire to check the ball, it’s a split finger fastball.

If the batter swings at the pitch two or three times it’s a knuckle ball.
