Great picture. Well it’s 53 here in Midland shooting for the low 80’s so with the low humidity it’ll be a fine day. I of course am the only one up, I got up a 5 sharp, figured out the Keurig Coffee pot and I’m having a pretty tolerable cup of coffee. I say I’m the only one up but their little dog heard me in the kitchen and came to see who was invading her space but we’ve kinda’ got used to each other so she shut up and went back to bed. She’s mistrustful of strangers but she’s warmed up slowly to me on my numerous trips and last night was the first time that she has got in my lap.

How many votes will this buy, I wonder?

EXACTLY my very first thought when I heard about this.

FWIW; Last January I got a raise of something like 5% but they raised Medicare a couple of percent so it reminded me of the raises I got in my last years at the Rocket Ranch only I lost money ever year in that program.  Up 3% Insurance up 4% or so. EVERY DAMN YEAR. But hey they weren’t responsible for the increase in insurance.

There is speculation that the clowns on the J6 committee are going to subpoena Trump.  What are the odds that he shows up?  I’m quite sure that his lawyers can delay until well after the mid-term blood bath and past the end of the year when the time runs out on the authorization of the committee.

The odds are in favor of the Rs retaking the House and the Wicked Witch of the West, Nanzi Pelousi, will no longer be speaker, so what happens after that?

Social Security has been the topic the past few days.

Supposedly there 64 Million drawing SS.

Supposedly 40 Million Illegal Aliens in the US

Millions sitting on the side line not working.

It would look like a full one third of the Nation is on the Dole?

I start drawing SS in January and SS said because I’m already drawing a private Pension they have the right to reduce my SS distribution by 50%. 😯

I spotted a couple of old Wheel Covers that SIL had put up on his back fence and asked him; “Where’d you get the 55 Buick Hub Caps”? This was a guess on my part but I was thinking about when they were made and for who and they looked like fancy mid 50’s GM’s. Too fancy to be a Chevy. After I checked them out closely I spotted the Oldsmobile Ringed Globe so I looked them up. They’re 56 Oldsmobile Spinner Wheel Covers.     I didn’t miss it by much.

We are in the process of selling the 109 acres of the family cotton farm my brother and sister and I inherited to our cousin who works the farm. My grandfather was one of twelve children, one died early so it divvied up he inherited 1/11th of the farm and that is the 109 acres. As it is we are landlords, my cousin and now his son works the land and we get 25% of the proceeds, or as this year when there was no crop, the insurance money. My grandmother will probably reach out from the grave and slap me but now it is split three ways and divided up even more with our kids and grandkids so we believe it is time to sell.

We found we do own mineral rights which we will keep, nothing will probably ever come of it but you never know what new technologies will come the next generation so we thought it was important to keep. At issue is what the value is, cousin’s offer is probably fair but is possibly less than up to half market value per one realtor we spoke to up there. We are waiting for a second opinion right now. Farm land and value is a different animal than other real estate and we don’t totally understand it, would there be a buyer interested in a small section in the middle of a large farm? It’s a close knit community there and has been for a century, I’m sure they all have their own Table of Knowledge at the local cafe, would any of them do that to a fellow farmer? We will absolutely not cause a fight over it, but would like to make sure we get a fair deal. Touchy subject.

I hope it’s OK to repost TexMo’s #33 from yesterday.  I completely agree with it and yes SS COLA’s are automatic regardless of who is in power but he makes a good point about the Biden Administration.

    Tedtam & Squawk

I am not 100% certain, but I believe Social Security COLAs are stuatory law. These COLAs occur every year. Most of the time they go unnoticed because for the last two decades inflation had been holding below 3%.

Our federal government’s fiscal year started on Oct 1st and these types of announcements come out during October. I do not see this as any purposefully act by Dems to garner votes because this is a process they do not control. HOWEVER, I would never put it past a Dem to unscrupulously use this news to bald face lie to a bunch of seniors during a campaign stop at a community center or some direct mail targeted at seniors. If they tried a broader radio or TV spot, they should be called out if they try to take credit for something that takes place every single year regardless of who is in office.

I’m sure today Californians are embarrassed by their own fossil fuels past. I’m sure they find that picture abhorrent and would want to burn it to remove evidence of said history.

Chevron has been one of my clients in the past and they are based out of San Ramon, CA. I feel sorry for them that they have to operate in such a hostile environment. Their first refinery is the Richmond refinery right on San Francisco Bay. Their second refinery is appropriately named El Segundo (Spanish for 2nd). The refinery was there first and the town built up around it. They got creative when they decided to name the town El Segundo, CA.

    Headline:

NELLES: How The Mississippi River Could Complicate U.S. Inflation.

What do agricultural products, fertilizer, oil, and coal have in common? They all travel on the Mississippi River to reach the consumers who use those commodities. The challenge is that the river is at historically low levels and the barges carrying these products cannot transit.

A whole bunch of folks have no idea whatsoever how important the Mighty Mississippi is to the economic health of our nation; it would be hard to overstate its importance.

The paragraph just below the headline gives an inkling; the next most competitive transportation method is rail and it is 5x MORE expensive than barge and trucks may be 10X more than rail.  The fuel that powers all of that is diesel and the mental lightweights  currently running the show have waged all out war against crude oil production in this country.  The JugEared Jackazz said it plainly “under my plan electricity rates will necessarily skyrocket”; everything that requires fossil fuels will be much more expensive thanks to the people who controlled Obama and now Bidet.  This is not an accident; they hate us and want us all enslaved or dead.

GJT; I’d go in person to check with the local County Farmer Agent about the value and possibility of selling it as “Farm Land” 100 acres here in Alabama wouldn’t be enough for a farm these days but someone might like to add it to his. 100 acres in that part of the world is tiny and I don’t know if it would be easily saleable. In my limited experience the big money comes from people wanting a place to hunt or to have a country place. There again you’d have a location problem. I’ve had two appraisals on my place in the last 20 years and they’re all over the place. So to answer your question truthfully, I don’t know.

I didn’t roll out until almost 9:00.  I’ve had so many late nights lately, and Hubby told me to sleep.  Holy cow, I haven’t been able to sleep this late in…I can’t remember when. Usually that’s my Saturday morning laze-in, cuddling deliciously under my cocoon of blankets.  I woke up at my usual time, Hubby came to kiss me good morning, and my radio was on.  Usually, if I hear a radio or tv, my brain refuses to sleep.  Not this morning.

I’m not running on fumes today. I do feel better. Non fatiga sum.

Speaking of Latin, we had a group discussion last night.  I had several conversations with our teacher with my frustration at my lack of progress.  I agreed that a big part of my problem was a scheduling issue on my part – not finding enough time to practice. But I also made a point that I felt I would learn better if we didn’t just go from a book, learning theory, writing sentences, trying to use rote force to remember the multitude of declensions and conjugations.   And while Collins is definitely geared to the language we use in mass and is a fine resource, it is a very dry way of learning.  I went looking for some variety and on my own have found some other resources – beginner stories, some learn-language videos, etc.  The videos really pushed the point that the language being learned must be spoken to be learned, and stories are the best way of doing it.  Our brains retain better what we learn in a story format and not in disconnected sentences.

As a result, it looks like Magister will talk to Fr. Felix about rebooting our class – again – but this time using an online resource, Lingua Latina. It comes in classical Latin as well as Ecclesiastical, which is what we will use, natch.  It is a story format, and there is audio to go along with the text, so we can hear the pronunciation as well as see it.  There are online  exercises.  I think we’re going to combine some of Collins and other resources (such as actual psalms from the Vulgate) with LL.  Magister will have to create the latter resources, but he already has much of those resources available through the work he’s already done over the years.

The reboot probably won’t happen until January, so we’ll continue to slog through Collins until then.  There will be a call out to the parish to see if anyone else wants to join in.  We went from 40 to 5, probably because “Collins is so intimidating”.  LL looks more fun, so we’re hoping we’ll have more of our parish family join us.

I’m looking forward to it.  I may even buy the home version  – books, CDs, etc. – for my personal use. That way, I’ll always have them.

This is in Crosby County, near Lubbock so going in person is not an option. Five trips up there last year dealing with my aunt, then her house after she passed was enough!

Yes 100 acres is tiny and it certainly would be an add on to whatever any possible buyer would have. My cousin who farms ours has sections he either leases or owns all over the place so they do travel with their equipment. But that is the question, appraised (not county tax appraisal) market value means nothing if no prospective buyers.

RE: Your purchase of an Onderdonk fine print from Mark Pusateri at Copano Bay Press

The Chili Queens of San Antonio

” The Chili Queens, almost all of whom were Tejanas, ruled the scene by force of personality.

A reporter in the San Antonio Express reminisced about those days:

‘ The rule of the chili queens presiding over the chili stands on the plazas was absolute. Their tables were patronized by people of all walks of life. The banker touched elbows with the newsboy. The doctor sat by the farmer, the lawyer, judge and Sheriff sat next to the barber, the policeman and the porter.

Generally the chili queen reserved a seat near the center of the inner circle or bench for the newspaper reporter and the hackman, who were her particular protégés. The bootblack also belonged to the inner circle, to which sometimes the musician, the actor and the gambler was admitted, but most of the patrons, and especially the politicians, had to take seats on the outer edge of the table.’ “

In the interest of historical accuracy, I want to point out an accidental oversight and omission by Pusateri.

The Chili Queens were also notorious madams, each with their own little harem.  On the menu with a bowl of red was an optional side order of afternoon delight with a pretty, young senorita back in their day.

    Good Morning Hamsters,

It has recently occurred to me that I ought to ask if calling our gang “Hamsters” is acceptable. 🙂

Several months ago we attended spouse’s ham radio club annual dinner.  The door prize winner was to be determined by guessing how many gumballs of all sizes and colors were in a large Ball canning jar.  The jar was the door prize.  It is heavy and could easily be described as a blunt instrument.  Turns out our guess on it was the closest one to the actual number.  Spouse was notified we won it during an online club meeting, and he brought it home last night after an in-person meeting.

It has a big beautiful red bow on it.  As to its size, it has a wide mouth and a capacity of 1500 something marked on the side, also a decorative panel on one side.  It is almost 10″ tall.  We suppose this is not your ordinary canning jar.  We haven’t opened it yet, as it will take some strong hands to open the lid.

I’d bet a week of Texpat’s pay that the Chili Queens served chili straight up with beans in the chili.  The story said that they served chili with the beans on the side.  The author probably got inundated from whiney so called “chili purist” that icons of Texas like the “Chili Queens” would never serve CHILI WITH BEANS.  Show me records that all chili with served without beans back in those days.  I’d argue for a plethora of practical reasons Chili with beans was the norm.  Served on the side was the aberration.

Chili Queens more than likely made chili with beans.  Anything else claiming otherwise sounds to me to be revisionist history.

Airport baggage handler dies in freak accident after her hair gets caught in conveyor belt.

A baggage handler was killed when her hair got tangled in a belt loader at a New Orleans airport on Tuesday night, according to officials.

Jermani Thompson, 26, was working at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on August 30 when the freak accident unfolded. She was employed by GAT Airline Ground Support.

At around 10 p.m., Thompson’s hair got caught in a belt loader while she was unloading bags from a Frontier Airlines plane on the tarmac.

She was rushed to a local hospital and pronounced dead. The horrific accident prompted Frontier Airlines to cancel a flight on Wednesday.

Daughter showed me a clip of some talk radio guy reporting on this. As the story goes, the lady was instructed to keep her hair up and out of the way of the machinery but she pulled the race card and threatened them because her hair was fixed up in Afro American fashion. Apparently the conveyor belt moved quickly enough to snap her neck when it got to the terminus.

Before we went down to Houma, Louisiana to apply for a job with an offshore mud company almost 50 years ago, my friend and I both had long hair and pony tails.  We were told to cut our hair before we left Houston or we would never get the jobs.  So we went to the barber and got short haircuts.

Nobody with long hair got hired in those days to work around all that rotating equipment on a drilling rig and elsewhere.  It was a good rule.  I’ve heard some real horror stories of people getting scalped by equipment because they were careless with long hair, especially women.

WTH ?  We needed the jobs and we didn’t threaten to sue anybody.  It’s just hair, for crying out loud.

    From CoffeeandCovid:

This story has nothing to do with the mid-terms —… three weeks before the critical congressional elections — the January 6th Committee held a blockbuster hearing,… in a dramatic finale voted to subpoena President Trump for public testimony before the Committee and to produce tons of documents.

    –  discussion of timelines, Liz Cheney’s deplorableness, etc. —

So Trump WON’T testify before the elections.

But the Committee MIGHT have time to do it before the new Congress convenes in January and pulls their plug. Maybe. They should’ve started this a month ago. It makes you wonder if they really want to hear from Trump, or just want to complain about him resisting their subpoena and force the Republicans to “let him off the hook.” (emphasis mine)

And Childers goes into lawyer mode, explaining some of the finer points – and not-so-fine points – the maneuvering of the J6 Kangaroo Court (hereafter referred to as “J6KC”).  All with his usual snarkiness that I adore so much.

I’m thinking that the last line there is what they are attempting.  Knowing that Trump won’t be sitting in front of them before their time blessedly runs out, this is the most effective thing they can do to try to destroy Trump’s election reputation.

The derangement of the J6KC on display:

Thompson concluded insisting they’ve proven beyond any reasonable doubt that, after giving his speech on January 6th, Trump intended to personally lead a “heavily armed” group of “terrorists wearing body armor” in an attack on the Capitol…

But, this is Trump.  I’m waiting to see how he turns the tables.

    Because…Trump.

Rather than spraying water, a carbon dioxide-type gas filled the first and second compartments, killing dozens of crew members.

When the dividing door in the bulkhead from the third compartment was opened, the gas spread, and more people died. “

    C&C again:

ZeroHedge ran a story yesterday headlined, “US Core CPI Surges To 40 Year Highs; Food & Shelter Costs Soar.” … So it is fair to conclude that REAL inflation is worse, maybe much worse, than the CPI shows.

    Link to chart

As I said, given how the government has watered-down the statistics over the years, we might be even closer to the Carter peak than the graph suggests. In other words, a Carter economy is starting to look like a best-case scenario.

This makes canning and drying seem more and more prudent.

Food prices are up at least +13% from one year ago…. probably understated. Meanwhile, on the other side of the household ledger, real wages have fallen for EIGHTEEN STRAIGHT MONTHS.

It’s no coincidence that prices started spiking as soon as Biden invaded the White House.

And then there’s discussion of Biden’s (handlers) insistence that we’re actually doing better. (Because if you lie often enough, someone is bound to believe it.  Especially if (1) they want to believe it, (2) they are so ideologically pure that they can’t comprehend Dear Leader being wrong, or (3) they have been so emotionally invested in detesting Orange Man Bad that they just can’t handle the cognitive dissonance or public disgrace should they admit that they may have voted for an idiot instead of competence.)

Also discussion of the expensive spending bill that got rammed through with the Orwellian moniker “Inflation Reduction Act”. It ends with the Childers comment “That Inflation Reduction Act seems to be working exactly as intended. Good times.”

    Perzackly my feelings, too.

Here’s a take on the Trump subpoena for the J6KC:

    https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/10/subpoena-donald-trump-his-testimony-would-make-democrats-pay/

For Democrats, the investigation was just another way to fill the airwaves with obsessive anti-Trump smear campaigns and propaganda. With a faltering economy, rising costs of living, and the prospect of World War Three on the horizon, the Democrats need the January 6 investigation to scare away as many prospective Trump voters as possible simply because they don’t have anything positive to run on.

…The January 6 Committee was foolish to subpoena Trump, and should he decide to comply with the subpoena, it could unravel all the work they’ve done to confuse the American people and distract from Biden’s myriad of failures and disasters.

But the committee is unwavering. It doesn’t even matter that subpoenaing the former president probably isn’t a good idea – the committee wanted to do it from the beginning, has never changed that position, and is now moving ahead with what they believe will be the ultimate slam dunk for the Democrats ahead of the mid-terms.

In the collective minds of the committee, making Trump testify is enough to crush his support nationally. The Democrats’ rose-tinted tunnel vision has seen them conduct a thoroughly biased and frankly unproductive investigation – which yielded nothing new or exciting – on the assumption that the rest of the country believes everything they say.

    /snip

In peddling disinformation, the Democrats got ahead of themselves. Confident in their ability to control much of the media’s narrative, the January 6 Committee thinks their web of lies was woven impenetrable. But Trump is about to walk straight through it.

I think there’s a lot of truth in this excerpt.  The Dems have always been poor purveyors of the public sentiment, and they have such a fear of Trump that they have one single focus: to make Trump unelectable again.  But Trump, being Trump, won’t let them have their way if/when he gets in front of those cameras.  He’ll barrel right through all their lies, leave blood on the walls, and use Cheney’s limp reputation to smear the mess further.

Matt Walsh went on Dr. Phil in January and debated some tranny activists about the definition of a woman.  I believe this is where the idea for the documentary began.

Walsh then went out on the street and campuses with a cameraman and mic asking people, “What Is A Woman ?.”  The documentary sprang from those episodes.  Apparently, YouTube/Google is shadow banning and suppressing these man on the street videos because they are so embarrassing for lefties.

Smoky Bones Spice Blend / makes about 1/2 cup

    4 tsp coarse sea salt,

1 tbsp dried thyme, onion powder, smoked paprika (mild or hot), paprika

2 tsp garlick powder, cayenne powder, dried oregano

1 tsp ground black pepper, dried basil

    *** ************

Caribbean Jerk Spice Blend / makes about 1/2 cup

1 tbsp ground allspice, ground cumin, coconut sugar or dark brown sugar

    2 tsp sage, nutmeg

1 tsp thyme, coarse sea salt

1/2 to 1 tsp cayenne pepper

    ** ************

Traditional Grilled Pork Spice Blend / makes 1/2 cup

1 tbsp garlic powder, dried oregano, ground cumin, ground coriander

2 tsp dried thyme, coarse sea salt

    ** ************

It’s too late to start canning tonight, but I can make up these blends and have them handy for tomorrow.

Regarding beans in or not in chili, it was a good supper dish in north-central Wisconsin and amongst my Mom’s large extended family. They made it with kidney beans cooked in the chili, and not quite as spicy as down here.  That was the Polish version of it in the late 1800s to early 1900s area of numerous Polish and German settlers.  As I recall it sometimes also had chopped tomato in it.  All depended on who in the family was making it.  🙂
