Good Friday Open Comments

As they were looking on, so we too gaze on his wounds as he hangs. We see his blood as he dies. We see the price offered by the redeemer, touch the scars of his resurrection. He bows his head, as if to kiss you. His heart is made bare open, as it were, in love to you. His arms are extended that he may embrace you. His whole body is displayed for your redemption. Ponder how great these things are. Let all this be rightly weighed in your mind: as he was once fixed to the cross in every part of his body for you, so he may now be fixed in every part of your soul.

Matt Taibbi humiliates his media colleagues…

However, they didn’t stop there. Media figures everywhere are openly complaining that they dislike the Musk move because they’re terrified he will censor people less. Bullet-headed neoconservative fussbudget Max Boot was among the most emphatic in expressing his fear of a less-censored world:

    ************************************************

    Max Boot
    @MaxBoot
I am frightened by the impact on society and politics if Elon Musk acquires Twitter. He seems to believe that on social media anything goes. For democracy to survive, we need more content moderation, not less.
    *************************************************
In every newsroom I’ve ever been around, there’s always one sad hack who’s hated by other reporters but hangs on to a job because he whispers things to management and is good at writing pro-war editorials or fawning profiles of Ari Fleischer or Idi Amin or other such distasteful media tasks. Even that person would never have been willing to publicly say something as gross as, “For democracy to survive, it needs more censorship”! A professional journalist who opposed free speech was not long ago considered a logical impossibility, because the whole idea of a free press depended upon the absolute right to be an unpopular pain in the ass.

Things are different now, of course, because the bulk of journalists no longer see themselves as outsiders who challenge official pieties, but rather as people who live inside the rope-lines and defend those pieties. I’m guessing this latest news is arousing special horror because the current version of Twitter is the professional journalist’s idea of Utopia: a place where Donald Trump doesn’t exist, everyone with unorthodox thoughts is warning-labeled (“age-restricted” content seems to be a popular recent scam), and the Current Thing is constantly hyped to the moronic max. The site used to be fun, funny, and a great tool for exchanging information. Now it feels like what the world would be if the eight most vile people in Brooklyn were put in charge of all human life, a giant, hyper-pretentious Thought-Starbucks.

Every time I see the spectacular moron, Max Boot, mentioned I think of Hamous and his perpetual frustration with Phil Magness aka Phil_M.  Magness was teaching at St. Thomas during the LST days and would post some pretty vitriolic comments.  Magness is a brilliant guy, but he has no patience with anyone who doesn’t think as fast he does.  I always appreciated it though, when he would go off on these hilarious rants about how Max Boot was a fraud and hypocrite.

    Finally…it’s about time.

A conservative legal group is threatening to smack the Biden administration with a lawsuit intended to thwart the implementation of a new Iran nuclear deal.

The America First Legal Foundation, a group of conservative lawyers and activists, notified the Biden administration that it “intends to take legal action to block any Biden-Iran deal that is not submitted to Congress” for approval, according to a litigation notice letter sent to the White House on Thursday and obtained exclusively by the Washington Free Beacon. The letter also requests that the administration preserve all internal documents and communications related to the deal so that they can be used as part of a future court case.

The legal group is engaging Republican lawmakers on the effort amid growing concerns that the Biden administration will circumvent Congress to ink a new deal, which would violate a 2015 law mandating that any new agreement with Iran be brought before the legislative branch for approval.

Morning gangsters and gangsterettes.  Sort of cool and nice out here this morning.  the wind has finally died down overnight although it is predicted to pick back up as the day moves on.  The street looked deserted this morning as I headed out for coffee, but after a while a few regulars drifted in, and when I left every seat at the Table of Knowledge was taken, and even some of the voices had been raised a little to be heard.  City workers are off today for Good Friday, the usual weekend, and off Monday for Easter.  Then they take off again on Thursday for San Jacinto Day.  Must be nice to be a City worker at times.  Since my trash pick-up days are Monday and Thursday, looks like I’d better not generate too much trash this week.

I’ll get out and study my garden here in a bit and probably water some, but mostly it’s to the point that I just sit back and wait for it to grow now.  The two rose bushes that I planted earlier are just not looking all that good, but hopefully they are just off to a rough start as their roots investigate the new ground seeking proper nutrients.  I did expect them to take off a little better than they have, but most certainly the persistent winds have not helped.

Breakfast time is about here, so while I’m off getting my sausage and eggs ready to go, you can get a dose of Ammo Grrrll for your enjoyment.  More later.   https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2022/04/thoughts-from-the-ammo-line-423.php

Public schools in America are becoming taxpayer funded child abuse facilities.

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) published a position statement on Tuesday that has decided reading books and writing essays is overrated and that it’s time to “decenter” those traditional activities.

The new emphasis focused on the need to increase focus on digital media and popular culture.

“Students should examine how digital media and popular culture are completely intermingled with language, literature, and writing. The time has come to decenter book reading and essay writing as the pinnacles of English language arts education,” the statement read.

    Coffee & Covid ☙ Friday, April 15, 2022 ☙ PANDEMIC FALLOUT

Happy Good Friday, Passover, and traditional Tax Day (moved to Monday this year)! It’s Friday, and to celebrate the Good News of Easter, I have a neat little ‘good news’ roundup for you: DeSantis signs controversial pro-life law, confirming a red-state post-pandemic trend; a song reflecting self-inflicted progressive pandemic injuries; a new hope for Democrats; Rogan interviews Bill Maher and it’s not good news for progressives; and a little J6 news.

    *THE C&C ARMY POST*

At 7am this morning, I was interviewed live on 100.7 FM in Pensacola, on the Preston Scott show. We were talking about the “Save a Generation Tour,” sponsored by (among others) General Flynn and Patrick Byrne. I’ll be speaking live at the first four event stops in Destin (Santa Rosa Beach), Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Orlando, starting next Thursday.

Here’s the link in case you’re interested: https://takeactionforfreedom.com/fltickets/.

As you can see, the lineup includes heavyweights like Drs. Malone, Cole, McCullough, Kory, Madej, Ardis, and others, plus medical-freedom activists Nurse Erin, Kevin Jenkins, and Robyn Openshaw, and for the younger crowd, Jonathan Otto, DC Draino, Jimmy Levy and Hi-Rez. I’ve been told that VIP dinner slots are still available in some cities, particularly Tallahassee, in case that’s something you’re interested in.

    *COVID NEWS AND COMMENTARY*

Good Friday is a literal metaphor for unexpectedly realizing an absolute win just after all hope appears to be lost. It might be good for us all to meditate on that hopeful idea today. Never give up! Salvation could be right around the corner.

‍♂️ Yesterday, Governor DeSantis signed what dumbfounded critics are calling one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the US. Republican State Representative Erin Grall sponsored the Florida bill, which now becomes law on June 1st. Grall has also been very active in parent’s rights this year.

Florida is currently third in the country for the largest number of abortion procedures performed, after California (#1) and New York ( #2).

In a statement released after the bill’s approval, Florida Democrats called it “one of the most extreme and anti-freedom bills to ever pass” the state’s legislature and “a direct assault on the people of Florida and our constitutional rights.” Their opposition is more nuanced than just the time restriction of fifteen weeks, which is supported by a clear majority of those polled. The Democrats are upset because the Republican legislature had rejected amendments to allow a myriad of exemptions for rape, incest, mental harm, and a laundry-list of other loopholes.

The Supreme Court is widely expected to uphold a Mississippi abortion restriction, which essentially would overturn Roe v. Wade. Blue states are getting ready.

New York’s delusional replacement Governor, Kathy Hochul, who just lost her Lieutenant Governor to pending corruption charges, was critical of Governor DeSantis for signing the bill, and invited people to come to New York to get their abortions.

Smiling from ear to ear as he rips away the reproductive rights of Floridians. It’s cruel and despicable.

To anyone seeking abortion care, know that you are welcome in New York.

    /snip

Last week, Maryland overrode its governor’s veto to expand abortion rights, allowing any medical professional — not just doctors — to terminate unborn infants in that state.

All of this is hotly political and very interesting. But let’s consider the TIMING for a second. The Sunshine State is the latest among red states to pass a 15-week abortion ban THIS SESSION. West Virginia, Arizona, Kentucky and others have all enacted similar legislation. Texas recently passed a controversial six-week abortion ban. Oklahoma outright banned abortion, making it a felony.

It’s not just legislatures and governors. It seems to be an unstoppable tidal phenomenon. Just on Tuesday, the Miami Herald reported a story headlined, “After 7-year legal fight, Florida judge affirms required 24-hour wait for abortions.” Judge Angela Dempsey issued a ruling Friday that upheld the constitutionality of a 2015 law requiring women to wait 24 hours after initial visits before having abortions.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion-rights research organization, state lawmakers enacted more abortion restrictions in 2021 than in any other year since Roe v. Wade. (If Roe is overturned, get ready for Democrats to try to transform the midterm elections into a referendum on abortion rights.)

So. Regardless of where you stand on the abortion/life issue, one thing seems clear to me. Progressive pandemic restrictions were the legal equivalent of jet fuel for all this pro-life legislation. Vaccine mandates, in particular, completely undermined the rationale for Roe v. Wade, in which the Supreme Court had found a right to bodily autonomy in the Constitution. But how can a woman’s absolute right to autonomously control what happens to her body be so absolute she can terminate her unborn child, but at the same time not absolute enough that she could be fired from her job for refusing to inject any kooky chemical the government wants into that same autonomously-protected body? Her body? Her choice?

The collectivist rationale for vaccine mandates — jabs help others, so shut up — was the rhetorical straw that broke Roe v. Wade’s back.

I made this point last summer when I reported about Texas’ new six-week restriction. I also said progressives would eventually be sorry they got so jab-happy. This is exhibit A.

    ********************

According to The Hill, Democrats have a new hope! A hope for saving what is shaping up to be catastrophic midterm political losses, and you’ll never guess what it is. It’s President Trump. Again.

The Hill ran an article yesterday headlined, “The Memo: Democrats Hope Trump Will Save Them From Midterm Disaster.” Here are the three reasons they think Trump could help shift the elections in their favor:

    1- He’ll back losing candidates
like Dr. Oz and Herschel Walker.

2- The threat of a presidential run in 2024 will make dems mad and fired up.

3- The J6 Committee will release a stinker report accusing President Trump of sedition or insurrection or crimes or something.

As evidence, the article notes that yesterday, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) — the head of House Democrats’ campaign arm — shot out a terrifying fundraising email that began: “Trump hinted he’ll run for President if Republicans retake the House.” The frightening prospect of more mean tweets helps squeeze cash out of democrat voters, apparently.

As more evidence, the Hill reported that in an interview with The Washington Post yesterday, Representative Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), who is on the J6 Committee, leaked that the forthcoming report will be “profuse in setting forth crimes that have not yet been alleged.” Profuse! With un-alleged crimes! In other words, the democrat-only Committee plans to throw the book at Trump. It’ll be a million times bigger than Watergate! Or so they hope.

But The Hill seemed skeptical about the J6 report, noting that issues like inflation are more likely to stand out to folks instead of whose fault the Capitol riot was. The Hill also noted that polls suggest most people have already made up their minds about the “insurrection,” so the Committee’s awesome report might not move the needle at all.

Finally, The Hill noted that Terry McAuliffe already spent millions last November linking Governor Younkin to Trump, but Younkin was elected in a red landslide anyway.

The article ends saying, “for now, it looks like Trump is the most inviting target.” Meaning, the Democrats don’t have any better ideas. Are you surprised that’s the best idea from the party that is still hoping cloth masks will somehow stop a nano-scale aerosolized virus from spreading?

    **********************

Blaze Media reported a story this week headlined, “Bill Maher Tells Joe Rogan Why the Democratic Party Is ‘Going to Get Their A** Kicked in November,’ Says People Are Hungry for ‘Common Sense’.”

Rogan interviewed Maher on his show on Tuesday.
Maher, who has been critical of corporate media’s coverup of the lab-leak theory, said:

“I’m always saying to the Democrats, just don’t be the party of no common sense and you will be surprised at what amazing success you will have, as opposed to what’s going to happen, which is they’re going to get their ass kicked in November… there is a hunger for, I think, in America, more than anything, is common sense. Away from the extremes.”

Maher denied that he’s becoming more conservative. Like many democrats, including many C&C friends who used to identify with that party, Maher said he feels like the democrat party has become much more progressive. “The left has gotten goofier. So, I seem more conservative, maybe,” he argued. “But like, it’s not me who changed. I feel I’m the same guy.”

WHAT changed Maher? Principally pandemic policies:

“Five years ago we hadn’t spent $6 trillion to stay home. I mean, I understand we had to do something with the pandemic. … It wasn’t cool that [Twitter] didn’t allow the lab-leak theory to be talked about. For months, you couldn’t even mention it … [And] five years ago, no one was talking about abolishing the police. There was no talk about pregnant men. I mean, looting was still illegal. So, like, have I changed? No, because if someone had said 20 years ago ‘I’m not sure looting is a bad thing,’ I would’ve opposed it then. So, I haven’t changed.”

Maher’s point, I think, is that a denial-of-common-sense virus appears to have infected the democrat party. See what you think about this comment by Maher:

“[Even Robert] Redfield, the former head of the CDC, firmly believes that it was in a lab, but again, that becomes the conservative view. For what f***ing reason, why — I can’t even follow the logic of why we pick, ‘OK, if you think it came from the wet markets, you’re a Democrat. And if you think it came out of the lab, you’re a Republican.’ It’s like what the f*** does it have to do with a Republican or Democrat?”

Would you have thought it was likely or even possible Bill Maher would start identifying as a proto-conservative two years ago? I wouldn’t have. This looks a lot like more pandemic fallout, and the longer they hold onto their goofy, nonsensical ideas, the more profound the fallout will be.

    *****************

    *THE MINORITY REPORT*

Surprising no one except corporate media reporters, the Epoch Times ran a story yesterday headlined, “20 Federal ‘Assets’ Embedded at Capitol on Jan. 6, Court Filing Says.”

The filing, a motion to dismiss in the Oath Keepers prosecution, was light on specific details about the embedded FBI and BATF agents but recited that attorneys reviewed mountains of discovery.
Alert readers had noted that a tiny footnote on page 6 of the Motion said “at least 20 FBI and ATF agents were embedded around the Capitol on J6.” We assume that the conclusion was formed after reviewing all that discovery.

The footnote doesn’t prove anything, but it is extremely unlikely the defense lawyers would falsify a statement like that in a federal filing.
And famously, the FBI was unwilling to say how many agents were embedded around the Capitol when asked by Senator Ted Cruz at a committee hearing.

Bottom line: the J6 cases are going teach folks a lot about how politicized the Justice Department has become. I’m predicting that progressives will eventually regret pursuing all this J6 stuff, too. More pandemic fallout.

For some reason, the roundup today reminds me of the best song about self-inflicted retributory justice I ever heard,
which my great uncle used to sing to us when we were littles, making us collapse in giggles every time by substituting the grownup words for “heck” and “dang” whenever our parents weren’t around. Here’s a snip:

    CHORUS:
    Hey Mr. Donderbeck
How could you be so mean?
I told you you’d be sorry for inventin’ that machine.
Now all the neighbors’ cats and dogs
    Will nevermore be seen
They’ve all be ground to sausages in Donderbeck’s machine.

One night the thing got busted
    The dang thing wouldn’t go
    So Donderbeck, he crawled inside
To see what made it so.

His wife, she had a nightmare
    And walkin’ in her sleep,
    She gave the crank
    A heck of a yank
    And Donderbeck was meat.

    (Repeat Chorus)

It seems to me that progressives are looking a lot like Donderbeck, and their political machine isn’t working too well. Maybe they need to get in and take a look at the insides.

Little guy’s procedures went great on Wednesday! We did find a laryngeal cleft, but nothing else abnormal. The doctor put in a gel to see if that helps his swallowing abilities and we will have a swallow study soon to see if it helped. He also got some Botox injections for his hypertonia to see if it’s helpful.

I thought that I had worked out an issue with his medication with insurance but Walgreens once again only gave me enough for 10 days instead of 30. I talked to someone last night who said they’ll have to call corporate because they’ve inputted the wrong number of days. (facepalm) I’m supposed to hear back from them again today…I swear if there was another pharmacy around the corner from my house I would be trying it out, but this one is most convenient.

Meanwhile, the hummers are finally here but so are every terrible annoying insect. The fleas are terrible, the mosquitos are bad. The hubs has run the dogs to the vet for their annual visit and to get more of the good flea meds. We scheduled pest control to come Monday. When I’ve picked five fleas off my toddler in a single morning, momma is not a happy camper. But of course that means I’ve got to spend some time this Easter weekend getting the floor picked up and vacuumed/mopped good so it’s ready for Monday. (sigh)

For the Ukrainians, the strike on the Moskva would represent a helping of revenge. The ship was the lead warship in Russia’s opening moves on Snake Island in the Black Sea, an action featured on a new Ukrainian postage stamp:

(See postage stamp at link – its great and I want one.)

From a practical perspective, the loss of the Moskva is significant, not only because it served as the Russian flagship, coordinating the Black Sea fleet, but also because the ship’s significant anti-air and anti-missile capabilities provided an air defense umbrella for the smaller ships around it. Consequently, the Russian amphibious threat to Odessa has virtually been eliminated, allowing Ukraine to redeploy forces assigned to the defense of that key port city to the battle to retake Kherson, about 90 miles to the east along the Black Sea coast.

According to The Daily Mail, the Ukrainians used several Turkish-built Bayraktar drones to distract the Moskva’s air defense systems before striking the ship with two domestically-built Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles. If true, this displays a high degree of battlefield coordination that the Ukrainians have used to largely thwart the invasion launched by their much larger neighbor.

But one hit with the Wondercide, and I watched ’em curl up and die. It was a beautiful, beautiful thing.

It is not terribly residual, so for persistent infestations, you’ll need to reapply every week or so to catch any new pesty hatchlings.

I will look at the pharmacies listed there and see what is around independent too. I got a call back from Walgreens this afternoon but it went to voicemail, and I didn’t quite understand all the issues were but got some apologies for all the inconvenience because they can see we’ve been given the 10 days amount several times now instead of a full month. I do love the smell of cedar. But I do need to treat my carpet now because they are in here so bad. Do you just spray it on the carpet?

Cedar smell love? I hope so, ‘cuz you’ll be smellin’ it for a while. But it’s worth it.

As with all chemicals, test a small area first. I had *no* problems with staining, and I sprayed walls, window sills/frames, mattress, pillows, floors, floor rugs…everything.

Make sure you get it into all the cracks and crevices. Baseboards I hear are particularly good hiding places for fleas. We didn’t have pets at the time, so we weren’t treating fleas, but they say you can use this product on pets. Or you can use the DE on your pets, spray for everywhere else, if they object to the smell.

Wondercide sells an atomizer that you might find useful. That spray will get into every space you miss. Or at least most of them.

I wish you luck. Those little bat rastards can be a real PITA.

Oh, and I’m glad to hear your son’s surgery went well. Yay!

Speaking of fleas – that just gave me a flashback. We had a tenant move out, and his only pet – as far as we knew – was an iguana that he kept in a big cage with a heat lamp. When he moved out, Hubby couldn’t even walk into the unit without his legs being covered in fleas. They must’ve snuck a dog in there without telling us, because I’ve never heard of an iguana with fleas. We had to treat that unit about four times to get all of ’em.

Hubby was working in the unit the morning I got the hysterical phone call from his mother, that his father had died. Hubby dropped everything to rush down to her house (very close to where we bought our river property), about an hour away. I tried to talk him into stopping by the house to at least change, but no. I took the time to drop my kids off with my dad and get him some fresh, unflea’d clothing. The last thing my MIL needed at that point was a flea infestation. She had a dog and lived in flea heaven next to a river already.

Hubby said he’s done (or nearly so) with our new barbecue pit. I’ve had to clear space on the back porch for this larger model. He’s constructed it to make the burn box easier to swap out. Or something.

I didn’t realize I had so much gardening stuff – all kinds of pots and stuff. I need to get more planted and in the yard, and off the back porch. Maybe tomorrow I can get busy.

I noticed that I haven’t killed my mother’s amaryllis, like I thought I had. It’s a beautiful red bloom, and it’s about to pop. It’s nice to have that piece of Mom with me.

Got everything outside watered down.  Everything except the roses are looking good, and I think the roses will stage a comeback especially if the winds will ever die down.  They appear to be growing from the base even though the leaves from the taller branches appear to have died off.  Maybe they can come back too, but I just don’t know that much about how roses operate.

Listening to Rice baseball this evening.  More ranting later on that I’m sure.  Have a pleasant evening.

    I’m thoroughly impressed.

Taylor was selected by the Washington Redskins as the third overall pick of the 1964 NFL Draft. He was also selected in the AFL draft, taken ninth by the Houston Oilers. Taylor signed with Washington and won the UPI rookie of the year award as a running back, and became the first NFL rookie in 20 years to finish in the top 10 in the league in both rushing (sixth with 755 yards) and receiving (eighth, 53 receptions for 814 yards). The 53 catches were a then-record for running backs.

Although known as a successful running back, Taylor was switched to wide receiver in 1966 and led the NFL in receiving in both 1966 and 1967. He played that position for the rest of his career and had a record-tying seven seasons with 50 or more receptions. In 1972, he scored two touchdowns in Washington’s win over the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football Conference Championship Game advancing them to their first Super Bowl. They lost in Super Bowl VII to the undefeated Miami Dolphins.  In the season finale in 1975, Taylor passed Don Maynard and became the NFL’s all-time receptions leader with his 634th career catch on December 21 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Following Maynard’s retirement in 1973, Taylor was the league’s active leader in receiving yards for four seasons. He began 1974 with 7,470 yards, then 11th all-time, and climbed up to 4th.

Taylor retired following the 1977 season as the NFL’s all-time leading receiver with 649 receptions, for 9,110 yards and 79 touchdowns. His career receptions record stood until 1984, when he was passed by Charlie Joiner. With 1,488 yards rushing and some kick return yardage, Taylor totaled 10,803 combined net yards. Along with his 11 touchdowns rushing, Taylor scored 540 points in his career. He was named first- or second-team All-Pro six times and was selected to eight Pro Bowls.

Taylor was named to the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984, and was selected as one of the 70 Greatest ns of all time. In 1999, he was ranked number 85 on The Sporting News list of its 100 greatest football players.

    Yes. Story is as follows…

On 24 February 2022, the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Snake Island, a Ukrainian island in the Black Sea also known as Zmiinyi Island, was attacked by the Russian Navy. Russian cruiser Moskva hailed the island’s garrison over the radio and demanded its surrender, and was told,
“Russian warship, go f*ck yourself”,(Russian: ‘Русский военный корабль, иди на хуй’, tr. Russky voyenny korabl, idi na khuy). After this, all contact was lost with Snake Island, and the thirteen-member Ukrainian garrison was captured.

The attack was widely publicized when an audio clip of Ukrainian soldier Roman Hrybov replying to the warship, surfaced with initial inaccurate reports of their deaths. Later on, it emerged that a civilian search and rescue ship trying to evacuate the soldiers was also captured along with the garrison. The ship, its crew, and at least one soldier were subsequently freed in prisoner exchanges.

No rain for the wicked out here in centex.  But a little mini-cool spell and winds shifting to NW from prevailing SE.  But still blowing, no matter what.  I’ve had a pretty sedentary winter but I’m starting to try to move around a little more the past month or so.  While I stuck with my keto diet throughout, I managed to regain about 10 pounds over those months, so I’ve decided that it’s time to tighten things up and get serious about it again before it gets out of  hand.  Out with the peanuts, the pork rinds and such; portion control to be strictly enforced.  Back to fresh cauliflower and broccoli, less reliance on canned veges which may or may not have sugar in them.  Nothing real major to change, simply tighten down on the controls a little bit.  With any luck I can be back to my fighting weight within a month or 6 weeks or so – just in time for speedo season.

In other news, the WIP is up for your Saturday morning coffee enjoyment.  https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2022/04/the-week-in-pictures-pooped-president-edition.php

You all have a great day.
