When I was in Midland one of my NASA buddies texted me to tell me to get a couple of cans of Wienerschnitzel Chili Sauce since they have the stores there. SO! Wednesday night I fixed Burn’t Dawgs! Complete with Wienerschnitzel chili sauce, onions, cheddar cheese, Kraft Horsey sauce and Koop’s spicy mustard. Man that was some fine eating. 😉

On the local news they’re talking about improving a RR crossing in Midland City where a lady was injured last week. The police Chief wants to upgrade to crossing lights/arms because there has been several accidents at 5th and 134. MmmK,,, But looking at the Google Map, you can see for a mile both ways and if you’re stupid enough to cross when the train is coming, well can you say Darwin Award?

Childers must be enjoying his vacation no C&C yet.

Today is the day of the questionable consecration. I’m hoping that today’s effort qualifies as the consecration as requested by Mary. If it does, we should see many improvements in world conditions, toute de suite.

But if not, as some are saying, then not. The latest controversy is over some of the translations into the local languages, which give the impression that the Pope is consecrating Russia/Ukraine/Humanity to the pachamama, a pagan goddess that was brought onto Vatican grounds. This is very, very bad. The Vatican and all of the chapels in which this idol was put should be reconsecrated. But since Bergoglio came from South America, he is at the least, tolerant of the pagan god.

So, with a whole slew of German bishops refusing to join, not using Latin and allowing confusion to reign as hundreds of languages struggle with their translations, not consecrating Russia alone – all of these requests of Mary may not be fulfilled.

Why can’t we get a Pope that simply follows a simple request of Heaven?

I’m still planning on being in church for the rosary and consecration.

I figger any kind of worldwide prayer can’t hurt.

Joe Rogan calls Big Tech firms “mentally ill”

He had a guest who escaped from Big Tech who had this discussion with Rogan. When you get that much power, it affects your thinking:

“The lunatics are running the asylum to a certain extent because there’s a lot of people working inside the company now that legitimately are mentally ill and they consider themselves activists,” according to Rogan.

He added that tech bosses at these companies “have to placate” the workers “because they’re a certain percentage of the population that works for the company, and they’re the loudest, and they oftentimes don’t get work done.”

He described big tech firms like Facebook as “kind of like a cult” since employees are brought to a “campus lifestyle” where “they do your laundry for you” and “feed you.”
“Facebook was a cult, and I joined it, and I was a happy member of it,” Martínez said. “It was very powerful. Everyone sacrificed themselves for the sake of the empire and its emperor.”

    ☕️ Coffee & Covid ☙ Monday, January 10, 2022 ☙ IT IS OVER

Good morning C&C team! It’s Friday. I hope everyone is having a nice pandemic today. In the roundup: a new scarient is even more transmissible than Omicron, but Fauci says don’t worry; airlines face new challenges as fuel prices take off; the world’s top female tennis champion suddenly and unexpectedly retires; Nigeria avoids Covid somehow; it turns out NATO has been helping Ukraine build up its military for years; Biden says we’ll be going on a sanctions diet; and ex-CIA chief Leon Panetta says The War is really between the U.S., NATO, and Russia.

    /snip

    **************

    *COVID NEWS AND COMMENTARY*

The media has a new variant for everyone to worry about: stealth Omicron. Also labeled “BA.2,” stealth Omicron is even worse — or better — than regular Omicron, depending how you look at it.
Fortune described the new variant in an article yesterday headlined, “‘This Virus Has Fooled Us Before’: Here’s How Fauci Predicts Stealth Omicron Will Spread Across The U.S..”

Before I get to the story, I have to stop and rant for a minute. Why would Fortune think we care AT ALL what Fauci does or doesn’t predict? What has that repulsive rodent ever got right before? About ten minutes ago he was predicting a “winter of suffering and death” and instead the pandemic ended. Dummy.

Anyway. Fauci says stealth Omicron is 50% to 60% more infectious than regular Omicron, which is hard to imagine. It seemed like EVERYBODY caught Omicron over a two or three-week period earlier this year. I guess if you managed to miss it somehow, BA.2 will make sure you get your turn. But the new variant is harmless like normal Omicron, staying out of the lungs.

But the most interesting part of the article was when Fortune admitted, “According to the CDC, roughly 95% of the U.S. population over the age of 16 has developed antibodies against COVID, due to a combination of vaccination and prior infection.” Ninety five percent is a lot. And just who are these lucky five percent, anyway?

Fauci said he doesn’t think the stealth Omicron will set the U.S. back, given those high levels of existing immunity, which are effective against the new variant.

But still. Get the jab, of course. Because $cience!

    ***************************************

Bloomberg explained the hits keep coming for the airlines in an article yesterday headlined, “Soaring Airfares Shock Travelers After Pandemic Bargains.”
More expensive tickets — the predicable result of skyrocketing fuel prices — make it even harder to get customers back. Bloomberg warned the higher prices “could imperil the travel industry, which is still recovering from the pandemic’s precipitous drop in demand.”

No kidding. There aren’t enough mask lovers around to fill airplanes,
which caused the first drop in demand, and now it’s getting even worse as leaping prices make it more expensive to fly.

So, Joe Biden is going to wind up getting the masks off of planes after all, by creating these giant gas price hikes.

    ******************************

Australian tennis star Ashleigh Barty, the top-ranked women’s tennis player in the world, announced her retirement this week at 25 years old.
Ashleigh acknowledged that many people won’t understand her sudden decision to retire at the pinnacle of her career. Her explanation wasn’t specific, but she referred generally to physical limitations. “I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and kind of everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level anymore. I think I just know that I’m absolutely … I am spent. Physically, I have nothing more to give,” she explained.

So. I know what you’re thinking. Stop thinking that. It’s definitely not the safe and effective jab. How dare you.

    ***********************

Nigeria, with only 4.4% fully jabbed out of its 206 million people, reported zero deaths and only 87 cases this week.
Weird. Wouldn’t it be great to have a well-funded government health agency that could investigate stuff like this and figure out how the clever Nigerians are avoiding stealth Omicron? Maybe we’ll have something like that someday.

    *******************

    *THE MINORITY REPORT*

At a press conference Wednesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg admitted that the West has been meddling in Ukraine for years: “Since 2014, [NATO] Allies have trained Ukraine’s armed forces, and significantly strengthened their capabilities…Providing anti-tank and air defence systems, drones, fuel and ammunition. As well as financial aid…The Ukrainian Armed Forces today is much bigger, much better equipped, much better trained, much better commanded. They have much better logistics than they had back in 2014.”

Building up Ukraine’s military seems like something Russia might not like very much. One of Putin’s chief complaints has been that NATO has been doing exactly that. But the narrative denies that, calling Putin a dangerous liar, don’t even listen to those lies. But Secretary General Stoltenberg appears to have just confirmed Putin’s claims that NATO has been building up military assets in Ukraine since 2014.

If this is true, wouldn’t that give Putin a valid complaint? Remember, we clamped down on Russia when it tried to put missiles into Cuba. Maybe one day we’ll get the whole story on Ukraine, who knows?

    ******************

Ex-CIA chief and former U.S. defense secretary Leon Panetta said some very interesting things about The War at a press conference he held in between NATO meetings in Brussels this week, according to lots of non-corporate media platforms. I had to go to ABC Australia for a citable source.

According to the many reports, Panetta described The War in Ukraine as a “proxy war” between NATO and Russia.
“The reality is that NATO and the United States, are now, without question, in a proxy war with Russia,” Panetta told reporters. Oh, great.

I’m not sure which is more interesting, that Panetta admitted what Putin’s been saying, that Russia is in “reality” fighting with NATO,
not Ukraine, or that the U.S. media is blacking out Panetta’s comments for some reason. Maybe Panetta is spreading misinformation?

What’s Leon Panetta doing in Brussels anyway?

    ******************

Later, at his own press conference, Joe Biden warned sternly that the Russia sanctions are producing worldwide food shortages, but don’t worry, it’s totally worth it. “With regard to food shortages … it’s going to be real. The price of these sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia. It’s imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well, including European countries and our country as well.”

It’s okay, we all needed to lose a few pounds anyways, right? Biden just announced food shortages that are going to affect the U.S. as a result of BIDEN’S sanctions. The sanctions that weren’t voted on by Congress? Am I allowed to ask if we can vote on this first?

Biden says that worldwide food shortages are just “the price of these sanctions.” In other words, we’re buying the sanctions with food shortages. If the First World experiences food shortages, what happens in the Third World? The implication is that mass starvation is an acceptable trade off to get Russian out of Ukraine. But why?

Then, a reporter asked Biden this question: “Sir, deterrence didn’t work. What makes you think Vladimir Putin will alter course based on the action you’ve taken today?”

Biden answered: “I did not say that in fact the sanctions would deter him. Sanctions never deter.”

Sanctions never deter?? Wait. Just wait. First, for weeks Biden has been telling us that we HAD to do sanctions — to deter Russia. That’s what he SAID. And next, if Biden is saying that sanctions never deter, then exactly what are the sanctions FOR? Who are they punishing with worldwide food shortages that are the price of sanctions? Because if they’re not punishing Russia, then they’re just punishing US. Why? WE didn’t invade Ukraine.

I was listening to a military analyst interviewed on the radio yesterday who actually seemed to know what he is talking about.  He reminded me of something I had forgotten.

The Russian Army has never developed a non-commissioned officer/low commissioned officer corps like the American military. It has always been the key to our strength.  Generals and admirals may plot and plan, but sergeants, lieutenants, warrant and petty officers fight and win wars.

Aside from fearsome elite commandos and Spetsnaz groups like the GRU, the rank & file Russian Army relies on a huge cohort of young draftees who are poorly trained.  Those convoys bogged down all over Ukraine are being driven by them and when there is a problem, without a chain of non-comm officers to relay orders and solve problems the senior commanding officers are drawn to front line combat zones where they are vulnerable to snipers.

NOTE: I’ve also read where Russian soldiers are using Ukrainian cellular systems which are tapped by the Ukraine.  The Russian radio frequencies have also been hacked over and over again.

Vladimir Putin has lost his 15th commander as Russia continues to face stiff resistance from Ukrainian forces. Colonel Alexei Sharov was killed by Ukrainian forces in a fierce battle in Mariupol, dealing a hefty blow to the already demoralized Russian army that reportedly is now abandoning their vehicles and retreating in many parts of the country.

Sharov’s death is a major blow to the Russian forces given that he was among some of the close aides of Putin. This comes as leaked documents from Kremlin claim that more than 10,000 Russian soldiers have died since Russia’s invasion on Ukraine on February 25.

Turning out to be a beautiful day outside today, and there is finally some relief from the wind.  Last spring I cut down some 50 year old hedges outside planted when this house was build in 1964.  Needless to say, the bases were huge – 18-18″ diameters, some with multi trunks, others with single trunks.  Anyway, I painted the stumps with Tordon which is wonderful stuff – not so much as a leaf or a sprig trying to come back.  I drilled holes in the stumps and put some of that potassium nitrate in there top help speed up the decay, and then I read the instructions which basically said to wait about a year before even trying to dissolve those stumps.  Well, it’s been a year, and I got one of them out this morning with a combination of the chain saw and an axe.  It was degrading p0retty well, but now it’s gone.  A couple of others of different breeds, more related to cedar or juniper or something, are still hard as a brick, so I’ll go ahead and work on them a little bit and then add the potassium nitrate – it will be at least another year on those hard stumps.  A couple of other hedges needed trimming with the chain saw, so I did that.  They look funny, but I imagine that when they sprout new growth they will fill in the blank spots and start looking symmetrical again.  The grass has barely starting greening underneath the winter  dead cover, but I’m not going to scalp it yet.   I’ve got enough to do right now anyway.  Nice day to be out.  wish I was in better shape to stay out longer at each stretch, but I just have to come in and sit down for a while rather than over do it like I used to all the time.

The state prolly sold the gas tax as a user fee of sorts to pay for road maintenance, right? They are Johnny-on-the-Spot at collecting the taxes that somehow never get around to being spent on road maintenance; strange ain’t it?
That was the excuse used for the federal gasoline tax as well, yet the interstate system could and should be a whole lot better.

How much does an RQ-11 Raven cost?

Each Raven costs around $35,000 but the total system is valued at approximately $250,000. The US Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Special Operations Command are the primary users of Raven B.

This is what happens when a group of smart, dedicated people get together and act…

In 2015 Ukrainian civilians organized an effort to raise money and design and build a UAV locally. This PD-1 (People’s Drone 1) was ready for service in mid-2016. This was all done by Ukrainian engineers, programmers and model aircraft enthusiasts who obtained OTS (off-the-shelf) components from suppliers locally and in Australia, China and the Czech Republic. The PD-1 was tested and accepted by the Ukrainian military and entered service in August 2016. American and NATO advisers witnessed the testing and were not surprised that PD-1 was equal to many American and Israeli UAVs of the same size and performance, but were impressed that it was built at a cost of less than $25,000 each. It proved to be as secure from Russian hackers and jamming as Western models. Ukraine soon offered the PD-1 for export.

The PD-1 is a 33 kg (73 pound) aircraft with an 8 kg (17 pound) payload. It is 2.54 meters (8.2 feet) long with a wingspan of 3.19 meters (10.2 feet). It lands and takes off on a tricycle landing gear and can also be catapulted into the air and recovered via a parachute. The gasoline engine drives a pusher propeller for speeds of 70-140 kilometers an hour at altitudes as high as 3,000 meters (nearly 10,000 feet, out of range of most anti-aircraft guns and portable missiles). Endurance is six hours.

PD-1 can take off and land under software control and can fly missions autonomously (which are hack and jam proof) and available sensors can either store video onboard or stream HD (1080p) video back to the controller who can view it in real time. This video signal is encrypted as is the control signal. It has worked under combat conditions against the best the Russians have to use against them.

Got one of my bushes outside trimmed way back (not evergreen and not yet budding any leaves).  My other hedges are not yet growing, so everything is pretty well trimmed from last fall.  Close inspection reveals that they are all about to spring forth with new growth soon, but the little buds are just barely visible at this point.  A is usual when I get outside, both arms are looking like hamburger meat now with twigs poking here and bruises popping up there and blood dripping all over.  One of the things that goes with getting old and taking blood thinners I guess.  Taking a break from outdoors and then will go back out and gather up my tools ans stuff and put them all away.  Nice exercise today – first time I’ve gotten out and actually done some stooping and bending and lifting and such.  Actually feels pretty good to get all warmed up and even break a little bit or sweat.

Probably checkpoints and RPG’s. Only costs a hundred bucks to pass.

And the skin on top of my forearms is constantly dry/flaky.

And I cannot stand to put lotions on my skin. Anywhere. Absolutely hate it.

All this useless belly fat that could be used where the skin keeps getting thinner and thinner elsewhere.
    But nooooo.

    El Gordo and Shannon;

A is usual when I get outside, both arms are looking like hamburger meat now with twigs poking here and bruises popping up there and blood dripping all over.

Yup, I can’t do anything without scratching up my arms and bedding all over the place. I don’t really mind it so much as I have to do something to keep from blood from getting all over everything. I usually just get a heavy duty shop paper towel and wrap up the Boo Boo with duck tape, These items are in the mule at all times.
I’ve always said that I need to get some heavy cotton long sleeved shirts but I’ve just not done that. That said: the other day I was in Tractor Supply and bought a pair of pants and shirt made by Ridgecut. They’re made out of Cordura fabric, whatever that is and it seems to be real tough, good for chain saw work….And yes, they are still hanging in the closet. 😉

Yup, not only is it greasy most of it smells like a French W,…. Well, let’s just say it smells sickeningly strong. 😉

That’s why I never used sunscreen (for which I’ll pay dearly some day) except a few times at the coast.

Just the thought of that stuff on my face, neck, and shoulders makes me want to go take a shower now.
    Gives me the creepy crawleys.
Might as well be lard or axle grease.

Hubby hates lotion, he gets squeamish when I ask him to put it on my back for me. I don’t ask him often, but since my skin is on the dry side, it really makes me feel better with lotion on. I usually do without the back getting covered, but I absolutely keep it on my face, neck/chest, arms, and legs. At a minimum.

When I get lotioned on my back, my whole body just feels more relaxed. I need to find a back lotion thingie so I can do it myself.

If you don’t like the smell of lotion, try coconut oil. If you get the refined kind, there is no odor at all. It won’t help with sunburns, though.

My hands get so cracked in the winter these days it can reach a point where I dread touching anything or trying to do anything with my hands.

I don’t like any of the lotions either, but when it comes to pain relief and healing this is the best stuff I have found:

    O’Keefe’s Working Hands

Warning: If your hands are really dry, this cream will burn for the first few minutes and then it will go away and your hands will feel 100% better.

I finally got back from church. I got there early, because the anticipated traffic jam didn’t.

So, rosary at 10:30. Then Fr. Felix introduced the history of the consecration, relating the Fatima visions, miracles, prophecy, instructions, and consecration request. (I still need to do my five first Saturday devotion.) He then prayed the consecration prayer as we all kneeled and read along with him. A brief break, and then mass. After mass, Stations of the Cross, which I haven’t done yet, so…done. After all that, it was close to 2:00 pm.

I decided that since I was fairly close, I’d go to Sacco’s and buy some rosary parts. That took a while. Got home around 3:00 pm.

And I find a long email from the CPA’S office. I have homework. Lots of homework.

    Heh.

I tried some O’Keefe’s for calloused feet.

Doesn’t work very well between sheets shortly thereafter. Sheet sticks to your feet.

    Threw it away.

Topical applications and I just don’t get along.

I’ve been waiting for the sequel to the “Passion of the Christ” – and it appears to be arriving in 2023.

This trailer shows it to be nothing like what I was expecting.

Still gonna want to go see it. If it doesn’t get blocked or sumpin’.

Even my nap felt better today following some outdoor activities.  I’m thinking that I’ll put Mary’s rose bush tht I’m planning to take from her back yard and bring back up here in the spot where I removed the big hedge stump this morning.  I think it will get plenty of sun, has some topsoil, and should work out OK back there.  All of these plans are subject to change of course at any time for any reason.

BTW, it’s not 91 degrees out here.  Maybe spring is here after all.

You might think about getting some Medina Soil Activator.  I always had good luck with it and Dewey Compton used to brag about Medina on his farm report program on KTRH at 5 AM in the mornings while I was drinking coffee with my grandmother in Bellville.

I see there’s a dealer in Goldthwaite and a bunch around Marble Falls.

Her Highness’ good friend and former boss is a very nice and generous person.  She is a left-of-center black Democrat, but otherwise an interesting and sophisticated woman.

She just called here after watching this movie, The Power of the Dog, and wanted to know, since I am from Texas and know something about cattle ranching, just what the hell that movie was about.  I told her the director, Jan Campion, went off the deep end, screwed up the movie up so bad Sam Elliot called it a big pile of Bulls**t and started an online riot in Hollywood.  Campion turned the whole story into some fantastical gay fantasy that has Hollywood in some kind psychosexual tizzy.

Our friend then told me the movie was horrible and she wanted her 2 hours back.

Went outside and watered everything since the pots dry up pretty quickly.  They need water just about daily and maybe a little more as it gets hotter.  They still don’t have good root systems, and if the night time temps can get a little warmer I think they will explode.  I used a bunch of real  potting soil to plant everything, including the roses, and I don’t think they are quire ready for more fertilizer until they start growing.  The native clay soil is pretty poor, but they way I planted everything with good potting soil should give them a shot at getting well established pretty quickly once temps permit.  I think they enjoyed the 90+ degree temp today.  A little or even a lot of rain about now would not hurt anything.  Watering with city water versus rain water seems to make a big difference.

Anyway, not much else to report on right now.  More later as bedtime approaches.

    Good evening, Hamsters

Late getting to checking in today.  Seems that big disasters are scarce amongst us today, and the little ones can be dealt with as they happen.

Texpat’s #17 is most interesting in that it seems to show southern states are growing more than anyplace else.  Texas is indeed the giant amongst the states, and perhaps it won’t be too long before it is the largest in population.  If of course we can discourage liberal/socialists from coming here to mess things up.  Think we might need more explaining to the newcomers who lean left that we do not have that mindset here. Take it or leave it.

El G – about your soil

There is a method of composting called potholing. Dig a hole, throw in your kitchen scraps, leaves, twigs, and other compostable material. You have the option of filling the hold back up or mixing those materials with soil and planting something in it.

Gradually, you’ll have better soil all over.

  73. Katfish Avatar

The challenge out west (EG’s area) – is trying to dig a hole where one can find limestone with a broom!    😉

  74. Tedtam Avatar

True, he does have that challenge.

  75. El Gordo Avatar

#75 et al – Yeah, I’ve mostly been just tossing the compost scraps out into the flower bed.  I did go out and turn it all over a couple of months ago to let it oxygenate and air out in preparation for spring.  So it’s as good as it’s going to get, but as I’m planting, I’m mixing in some good potting soil in the hole before putting the plant in, so it will have a good soil liner before it has to go out into the real clay to struggle for nutrients.  And yes, the topsoil is thin – you’re right, just digging the hole is virtually impossible in many places.  especially since I sold my jackhammer.

You all have a good night, and I’ll check in again in the morning.  Nite all.
