Spencer Klavan, of The American Mind, interviews the creator of the hilarious, wildly popular and famous Twitter character, Titania McGrath.

In April 2018, Oxford-educated comedian and journalist Andrew Doyle created a satirical Twitter persona, an “activist,” “healer,” and “radical intersectionalist poet” who self-identifies as “selfless and brave.” Titania, an imaginary amalgam of all the worst excesses in the modern social justice movement, fancies herself a voice for minorities of all kinds (whether they know they agree with her or not). What she lacks in self-awareness, she makes up for in conviction.

and,

Comedy and culture have been so strangled by political correctness that he is “at that point where I feel that it would be morally wrong to be silent” about the crisis of free public discourse in the West. Still, there is much more to Doyle than politics and polemic. I spoke to him at some length about his philosophical outlook, his academic interests, and his career beyond Titania.

Spencer Klavan: Tell us the story of Titania McGrath. How did you come to be running this satirical account?

Andrew Doyle: It was April 2018. I decided to create a fake character on Twitter—a satirical character who would mock the worst excesses of the social justice movement. So, to that end, I thought one of her characteristics should be a devotion to fourth-wave intersectional feminism. In which case it made sense that she was female and white—because a lot of what passes for social justice activism is actually rich white people telling poor black people what they should be thinking. It’s a kind of soft racism, I think: a very patronizing view of minorities. So I thought she should come from privilege.

And so she’s very rich, she comes from an independently wealthy family, but she’s determined to express how oppressed and persecuted she is at every opportunity, and also to attempt to censor anyone who disagrees with her on any point whatsoever. This is the kind of entitlement and narcissism that you see among social justice activists—it’s why they’re not prepared to debate. They can’t conceive that anyone who sees the world differently is anything other than evil, and they think the world has to change around them to suit their particular preferences.

In Texas, IJ’s strategic plan is playing out in real time after our landmark 2015 victory for economic liberty in the Texas Supreme Court. In that case, Patel v. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Texas’ high court struck down state licensing requirements for eyebrow threaders and announced that the Texas Constitution requires that courts provide meaningful scrutiny of economic regulations and determine whether they are unreasonably burdensome. The impact of IJ’s Patel victory now extends to all three branches of the Texas government.

In the years following Patel, IJ worked in the Texas Legislature and with the Office of the Governor to help create structural change in the executive branch that would simplify and streamline licensing in Texas. Now, all proposed regulations from the state’s 49 licensing boards must pass an independent review tasked with rooting out economic protectionism. IJ also worked on lowering regulatory burdens and eliminating criminal penalties from scores of occupational licensing laws. Referencing the Patel standard, Governor Abbott recently ordered all state agencies to review and overhaul their licensing requirements, adding instructions to trim regulatory barriers and education requirements.

The Institute for Justice is a great organization.  If you ever have a few extra bucks, they can use it.

Got more marching band tapes from my high school. First circle drill – 1974.
FYI – circle drills are possibly the hardest thing for a marching band to do. So easy to collapse a side without the 5 yard marks and a straight line ahead of you to keep your place.

Morning again gang. I’m pretty sure that Titania goes to Rice and helps edit the school paper, the Thresher. I read all of her work with each publication, talking about the poor, oppressed on campus minorities, and economically disadvantaged each week. I pointed out one time that they, as students of one of the world’s most exclusive universities, might have a difficult time convincing anyone else how unfair the world is, and what a lack of self-awareness they were demonstrating, but all they did was block my comments.

#4 – Win10 is a spawn of the devil, and it doesn’t like anybody. Win10 is much smarter than any of us, and who are you to criticize and be judgmental anyway. That’s why I’m almost 100% Microsoft free (I have one Win10 machine that I don’t use very much to watch stuff on TV once or twice a year). It’s somewhat like admitting in public that you are a fakebook user, at least in my opinion.

Kurt Schlichter is always good, always bombastic and fun.

All Trump did is follow a basic rule they taught me and every other infantry guy down at Fort Benning.

You charge into the ambush. Full bore, no hesitation.

When you find yourself in a kill zone, you don’t futz around trying to figure out a plan. You do that and you die.

You don’t run away, because then you get shot in the back and die tired.

You determine the direction of fire and charge into it.

You might get killed, but that’s a consequence of walking into an ambush. The simple fact is that the only way you have a chance of coming out of it unventilated is to charge the SOBs ambushing you.

    Which Trump did.

    Not me yet…

You guys have no idea how happy this makes me. I love a good marching band, and I thought these tapes were gone. The quality leaves much to be desired, but these recordings were probably made on 35mm tape that’s been sitting in a closet somewhere for mmph years before being digitized.

I remember that during rehearsal one day, while we were on our practice area in the high school parking lot, there’s a section in “Killing Me Softly” that featured the brass. The rest of us stood at attention.

Attention for an alto saxophone meant the horn was resting in my mouth. I was playing nothing for a number of bars, and a monarch butterfly landed on my mouthpiece, maybe an inch from my nose. We were eye to eye, it unrolling and rolling its proboscus, until I kicked off and it flew away. All the folks around me were cracking up, trying not to break attention.

This crap could not be written as fiction and taken seriously.

A former Democratic congressional candidate whose social media accounts are replete with criticism of President Donald Trump came forward Wednesday as the foreperson on the jury that convicted longtime GOP operative Roger Stone at a trial in November 2019.

According to multiple news reports, Tomeka Hart revealed her role on the jury in a Facebook post supporting the four prosecutors who withdrew from the Stone case Tuesday in protest over a revision in a sentencing recommendation for the GOP operative.

    and,

Her Twitter feed shows dozens of references to Trump, many of them links to negative stories about the Republican. In a Twitter post on Aug. 19, 2017, Hart quoted a tweet referring to Trump as the “#KlanPresident,” in an apparent reference to the KKK.

The woman was posting Russia collusion stories about Trump on social media accounts while she was serving on the Roger Stone jury.

    2. Is Minor Vehicle Repair Permitted at Residences?

Yes. However, it is unlawful for any person to engage in, or permit others to engage in, minor vehicle repair or maintenance in any agricultural, agricultural-residential, residential, interim estate and interim residential zones under any of the following circumstances:

    1. Using tools not normally found in a residence;

    2. Conducted on vehicles registered to persons, not currently residing on the lot or parcel;

    3. Conducted outside a fully enclosed garage and resulting in any vehicle being inoperable for a period in excess of twenty-four hours.

Here we have some issues. How exactly do you define “tools not normally found in a residence?” A socket set? A torque wrench? A brake drum puller? This feels like a rule that’s dangerously open to interpretation with pretty minimal supporting evidence.

A local resident commented on the story:

umm, I have not been left alone, they levied a $430 fine yesterday.  You can request a hearing to review the code enforcement decision, that costs $700 to complain.

There are neighbors with +$1 million dollar houses

    Further to TP #14 above.
Is lying on the voir dire form for jury duty a crime? Apparently this vile, lying, hyper-partisan, left-wing, jacka$$ (BIRM) did just that and wound up being the jury foreman on the Roger Stone case.
If the judge knew any of this and allowed her to be on the jury, the judge should be disbarred and put in prison for the 7-9 years that the corrupt DOJ terds tried to pin on Roger Stone. If he did not know, the fact that she was on the jury is obvious grounds for a new trial and Stone should be compensated for his attorney’s costs up to this point. If Stone’s attorney(s) knew and did nothing, then they are guilty of malpractice and should be disbarred.

  18. Bonecrusher Avatar

After just now reading the #16 post above, I have come to the conclusion that at a minimum, the case needs to be transferred to another judge and Stone needs better attorneys.

    This is a must read.

The author of this essay is a New Hampshire psychologist, registered Democrat and Pete Buttigieg primary voter.

Of all the elective activities of human beings, the last one I would figure to be a venue for savage, beastly political attacks is knitting.

I’ve been a Democrat for 20 years. Here’s what I experienced at Trump’s rally in New Hampshire.

As a casual knitter, I never really paid attention to this. I knit as a way to relax and escape the drama of real life, not to further engage with it, but for anyone who is active in the knitting world on Instagram, it became almost impossible to avoid it. It started about a year ago when roving gangs of online social justice warriors started going after anyone who was not lockstep in their ideology. People were bullied and mobbed by hundreds of people for such offenses as publishing an article expressing excitement about going on a trip to India, posting a video saying they were leaving IG because they were uncomfortable, and posting a poem asking for kindness. Katherine Jepsen Moore has documented the full stories extensively and the BBC recently covered it as well.

    and,

I started to discover (or perhaps rediscover) the #WalkAway movement. I had heard about #WalkAway when MSNBC told me it was fake and a bunch of Russian bots. But then I started to meet real people who had been Democrats who had made the decision to leave because they could not stand the way the left was acting. I watched town halls they held with different minority communities (all available in their entirety on YouTube) and I saw sane, rational discussion from people of all different races, backgrounds, orientations, and experiences. I joined the Facebook group for the community and saw stories popping up daily of people sharing why they are leaving the Democratic party. This wasn’t fake. These people are not Russian bots.

plus when in line for the rally,

I was not harassed or intimidated and was never in fear of my safety even for a moment. These were average everyday people. They were veterans, school teachers, and small business owners and they had come from all over the place for the thrill of attending this rally. They were upbeat and excited. In chatting, I even let it slip that I was a democrat and the reaction was “Good for you! Welcome!”

The last paragraph is the best one.

    RTWDT.

This new development really ups the ante in targeting the terror that spews forth from Gaza. This will enable the Israelis to target and destroy drones and bomb laden balloons before they leave Gaza. It even works on a 3 unit drone swarm. I watched the 1981 band tape. I could see the assistant director’s influence creeping in – it was becoming show band-y and there was much less marching and a lot more standing still while showcasing solo performances and show tunes.

1982 was worse. There were flags. I threw up in my mouth a little bit.

No wonder when I went for a visit for Monday night full band rehearsal I thought it might have been a section rehearsal, it was so small. This was about ten years after I graduated.

“No one wants to work any more,” I was told. After looking at the performances, it might’ve been something else.

Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 7 in mid-January, but it might need to roll out one last software update as users are reporting an unidentifiable bug that prevents them from shutting down or restarting their PCs.

Nobody knows what’s causing this bug. Last week, reports surfaced online that Windows 7 PCs weren’t able to shut down or restart. When trying to complete either action, Windows 7 displays a pop-up that says “You don’t have permission to shut down this computer.” Microsoft hasn’t commented on the situation, leaving users searching for manual fixes. Some are opting for a temporary workaround while others are taking a technical approach to bypass the major bug.

I’ve posted that video here a dozen times. Here’s an update on Ms. Brown:

On May 11, 2017, former congresswoman Brown was convicted on 18 of 22 corruption charges ranging from mail fraud to filing a false federal tax return.

On December 4, 2017, she was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay restitution. She reported on January 29, 2018 to Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County, Florida, near Wildwood, to begin her sentence. She appealed her conviction, and collected her Congressional pension until her appeal concluded.

Stay warm in the Frozen North, Hamous. The last two weeks of January and the first two weeks of February can be the nastiest ones of winter up north. Daylight disappears before 4:30 in the afternoon, folks come to work and go home in the dark depending on how far north you are, snow becomes unwelcome except for ski resort owners, occasional thaws above 32 degrees freeze into treacherous ice puddles that get covered with new snowfall and become very dangerous for drivers or walkers. The thaw/freeze cycles make it very prudent to cautiously check out a frozen patch by carefully testing it with a foot before trying to cross it. Ice is as hard as concrete to fall on.

Just checked the forecast for Madison, WI. Tonight -15, tomorrow Valentine’s Day, +13. This is the dead of Winter up there, when the Sun is truly bright on cold, clear days but gives little warmth, makes the snow sparkle almost enough to blind you, the air dry enough to feel like you’re being freeze dried in the slightest breeze, and chilled to the bone in a more vigorous wind. And reminding you why mittens are better than gloves to keep hands warm: all the fingers are together in one cozy section, and only the thumb has its own bendable covering.

And of course we are in a cold spell here thanks to that vigorous front that has the Midwest in its grip, reminding us that Winter is with us as well, just not in such a tight grip. Glad to be here and only reminiscing about the days we lived in Madison’s winters.
