The University of Montana thought it had a good idea a couple of weeks ago: It established a writing contest for the annual Martin Luther King Day holiday.

It turns out there was a problem: All of the entrants were white. Which means all the selected winners were white.

    On Martin Luther King Day??

    but wait, what !?,

But here’s the kicker: The idea for the contest was conceived by the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Committee, made up of members of the Black Student Union, the head of the African-American studies program, and members of the community. The committee had “personally invited members of the Black Student Union to participate,” and used a “blind judging” system — essay writers’ identities were kept secret — to determine the winners.

You mean no black students even made the effort ?  There are 11,000 students at U of M.

    #3 Texpat, from the story;

According to [head of the African-American studies program Tobin] Miller-Shearer, he wanted the contest to encourage everyone, not just members of the Black Student Union, to further King’s message.

    Then they say;

“We made the decision to give out awards even though we only had six entries, all of them from white undergraduate students, but it was a judgment call,” Miller-Shearer said in an email. “We may have not gotten that right.”

May not have gotten it right? So, it is the fault of those dang white girls that NO blacks participated? SMH

I have to admit I didn’t watch but a small bit of Shakira at halftime last night.  Several comments were made about the soft porn production.  This morning I watched some video of the show, mostly J-Lo.  The woman can’t sing, the sound was unintelligible so the only thing they can do is fake a stripper act.

Yeah, it was bad, really bad.

Then I saw this from Megan Fox:

The FCC still has rules about decency on network television between certain hours when children are watching. It is well established that children are watching during the Super Bowl. I had to send mine out of the room as soon as Jennifer Lopez took the stage in what looked like a two-sided thong and buttless chaps. The camerawork was outrageously gross, zooming in on Lopez’s barely covered crotch, so close that the viewer could see some sort of silver maxi pad sticking out from either side of her way-too-small fraud of a garment. If that thing wasn’t riding up between her front-hole lips, then my 6o-inch HDTV television was lying to me, and HD never lies. If you don’t believe me, watch Joe Biden on one. You can count his hair plugs.

    and,

Shakira was not as offensive, although the cameramen also could not stay away from her crotch. But at least she was wearing an imitation of a skirt and she wasn’t on a stripper pole. Yep. JLo did a striptease pole dance while barely-dressed backup dancers simulated an orgy underneath her. It was disgusting.

I think they should go back to having top college marching bands and just forget all this crap.

Yeah, what’s up with their made guacamole dip lasts for days, but an avocado has like Ms TT says, 15 minute window.

In fact, avocados can last for months IF PROPERLY HANDLED. An avocado can stay ripe(ish) on the vine for almost 9 months; the change being the oil content goes up the longer it is on the vine. When an avocado is harvested in Mexico, it is done in the morning and the fruit is immediately dropped in cold water – this stops the ripening process. When an avocado is picked, if the internal temp is higher than about 70F it starts to ripen and give off ethylene gas and generate heat. The more heat – the more gas – the faster it ripens. The more gas present – the more heat is generated; a feedback loop ensues and once it starts, it is very difficult to stop. That is why the fruit is cooled immediately, then packed cool and shipped in refrigerated, well ventillated, containers.
Mexican avocados are frequently shipped in reefer trucks to Houston, where they are then shipped to Europe via container ship. The transit from Houston to Le Havre, France is about 14-18 days; once there the fruit still has a couple weeks of shelf life – if properly cared for.
To speed ripen an avocado, put it in a sealed plastic bag on the counter for up to a day, max 2 and it will be ripe. 3 days and it is garbage.

The above information was shared with me by a Mexican avocado farmer in the late 1980s. Some things may have changed since then, but the nature of the fruit has not.

The Des Moines Register, CNN and Selzer & Co. have made the decision to not release the final installment of the CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll as planned Saturday evening.

Nothing is more important to the Register and its polling partners than the integrity of the Iowa Poll. Today, a respondent raised an issue with the way the survey was administered, which could have compromised the results of the poll. It appears a candidate’s name was omitted in at least one interview in which the respondent was asked to name their preferred candidate.

This poll showed Sanders crushing the other candidates and CNN demanded, as Iowahawk would say, the results be smothered with a pillow until they stop breathing.

Morning gang. Another bright cloudless day developing out there, and nice and comfy warm as well. My bluebonnet plants are all coming up, and they are pretty tough so I don’t think a freeze would affect them too much. May see some blooms on them before the month is out, but I’m still calling for a freezing ice storm sometime before real spring arrives.

I enjoyed last night’s super bowl and the half time show just like I’ve enjoyed the past several years – namely paying no attention to it. This may have been my best super bowl ever since I did absolutely nothing except flick away at some educational You Tube videos. For whatever reason, I’ve gotten interested in vintage radio restoration, and it’s surprising how many videos there are out there of others who do that stuff. I’m pretty sure SD could do that stuff with a blindfold and no schematics, but it’s interesting to me. Apparently most of the huge governmental shortwave stations around the world have shut down as the internet now serves their propaganda needs. I remember once long ago, maybe in the 1970’s, I built a multi-band receiver from a Heathkit that worked pretty well. Of course it disappeared into a dumpster somewhere on a move along the way, but that darn thing would be worth a few hundred dollars today, and if it was in tip top condition, even more. I remember that it had a few tubes in it. Wonder I didn’t electrocute myself back then poking around in there. Of course, the You Tubers have a complete old fashioned lab like we use to take the radio or TV to to get fixed, complete with an array of test equipment, soldering equipment, tubes and transistors, and all other assorted parts. Those old tube apparently still work, and there’s one fruitcake on there that works with glass and makes his own vacuum tubes. Another lost art.

OK, you all have a great day, and more later as it develops.

PS – I’ve seen supposed leaks of the secret poll results that show Barney winning bigly and Biteme losing bigly, so they can’t let that stuff out. We’ll see how they spin the final result this evening.

What I think, too. There are plenty of college and/or excellent high school bands that would love to have their skill displayed. And be a lot more entertaining. I don’t think folks who paid thousands or many hundreds of dollars for a Superbowl ticket are worried about watching a half time show. And the folks at home need a potty break. Those of us who really enjoy a good marching band will wait for the non-band folks to finish their business.

    So, it’s all good.

Joe Biden Wants to Ban 9mm Pistols.

A week after he told voters that the Second Amendment doesn’t protect “a magazine with a hundred clips in it,” 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden offered supporters more of his singular brand of anti-gun nonsense. While attending a private campaign event in Seattle, the former vice president reportedly called for a ban on 9mm pistols.

According to an article from the Seattle Times, Biden was in town to attend two private fundraisers, one of which was at the home of “a top Amazon executive.” The posh soiree set attendees back a princely $2,800 per-person. The other fundraiser was held at the home of a local philanthropist. That staider event offered donors a relative bargain with a $500 minimum price tag.

While speaking to attendees of the latter event, Biden claimed that he supports the Second Amendment. The 77-year-old then went on to ask “Why should we allow people to have military-style weapons including pistols with 9mm bullets and can hold 10 or more rounds?” Biden also shared his tired and inaccurate claim that because there is a shot-shell restriction for migratory bird hunting, “We protect geese from Canada more than we do people.”

The other three quarters were divided into navel orange, lime and lemon orchards.  We had fresh picked lemonade, limeade and orange juice everyday.  It was pretty amazing.

Of course, Trump literally broke him and his paper, and he’s adrift right now, so hopefully he can go over the the Huffing and Puffing Ton Post and find gainful employment.

36 – I used to go to Hereford frequently in my bank examining days. Hereford and Perryton each had similar characteristics – feedlots. Whew, a week in one of those places and your clothes even smelled like money (I think that’s what they called it out there). And the only thing to eat every day was sugar beets at the local restaurants. I flew over Hereford one day at about 10,000 feet (elevation is around 3500′, so only about 6500′ above the ground), and the Cessna started choking up and wheezing. Strong stuff I’m telling you.

From Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit with good comments:

TIPPING: A friend who drives for Uber comments on Facebook that most people don’t tip: “I don’t understand it but there are ethnic and age components. I pick up many immigrants from countries that have no tipping culture which comprised most of my riders today. Millennials don’t tip, ever. Women don’t tip often. African Americans tip rarely. Chinese never, and Indians rarely. I sometimes receive better tips from Mexican restaurant workers and blue collar white guys than wealthy businessmen.”

I try to tip well, but the extreme reaction to, say, a $20 tip suggests to me that not many people do. People who work in jobs where there’s tipping depend on it, and if they treat me well, I want to treat them well. As a colleague says, being able to tip generously is one of the pleasures of having a little bit of money. And I know enough people who depend on tips to know what a difference it can make, both financially and in terms of how your day seems.

Also, experienced waiters, waitresses, cab drivers, and bartenders can size you up. If you look like a good tipper, you’ll get better service from the get-go in my experience.

I’m a good tipper.  I had jobs when I was young that depended on tips and received tips sometimes when it wasn’t expected.  The only women I’ve known who were good tippers were ones who worked as waitresses or bartenders in their lives and understand what it means.  Other women not so much or very little.

When I got on the Sante Fe train in Bellville to go to Temple for summer church camp when I was maybe 11 years old, an older kid took me into the dining car to have hamburgers.  He told me when the waiter brought the bill I had to leave a tip and I was embarrassed as hell because I didn’t know what it meant.  Learned hard later in life.

  50. Hamous Avatar

I’m generally a 20 percenter. If service is not up to par I’ll leave 15%. It’s very rare that I don’t get good service, though. There have been a few places where the service has been bad multiple times (the Devil’s Smegma on my hamburger, for example) and it’s three strikes you’re out. I won’t eat there again. In a very few cases, and I can only think of one, the service was so bad that I didn’t leave a tip, let the manager know my displeasure, and never set foot in the establishment again. That was Live Oak Grill on Hempstead Highway.

  58. Texpat Avatar
    Texpat

Tips in restaurants aren’t just for the wait staff.  They are supposed to share a percentage with the kitchen staff and busboys.  It’s not exactly the same in every place, but I ususally tip 10% at the local restaurants if I go in and pick up an order.  That doesn’t include burger or pizza joints.

I’m usually 20%, 15% if it’s not good service and good food.  If it’s bad food and bad service I’ll leave 15% and never go back.  I left 30% for the waitress at a birthday celebration dinner the other night with our daughter, son-in-law and grandson.  She did an outstanding job with a lot of patience.

I didn’t always, but I did later in life regarding a tip for the hotel maid, especially if the room was really nice when I walked in.  Also, up here in the NYC area, tipping is much more the norm and expected for a lot of things.

Note:  I really despise people who leave their hotel/motel rooms like a pigsty.  No mature adult should leave a mess for another adult (at $9/hr) to clean up as if they’re some 3 year old.  I have lit into a couple of my friends over the years for doing that, especially since I knew they would never act that way in their own home.

  59. El Gordo Avatar

I’m sure by now that you are aware that the final, final Dem poll conducted by the local reputable Iowa paper was withheld from publication. Reportedly, one of the people polled said that the list he was read did not include Buttplug, and when the pollster re-read the list, she mispronounced Buttplug’s name. Of course, the leaked results apparently show Barney leading the way and Slow Joe finishing somewhere around 4th. The DNC (establishment) is kicking their efforts to screw Barney up to Defcon 5 since they do not want him as their standard bearer for some reason or another. Anyway, things are heating up in Iowa now as the caucuses begin. Now I know you won’t believe this next statement, but it is reported that the counting and reporting devices in Iowa are suffering mechanical issues, thus the results will be slow in coming. Gotta hand it to those Dems, they know how to steal elections, even if it’s one of their own. When it gets around to us next month, I might even go vote for Barney, just to help the clueless Dems decide on a candidate. No real reason that I can see to vote in the Rep primary – I would not vote for Cornholio anyway (I’d skip it), and I don’t really know of any other people I’d vote for. My backbencher congresscritter is retiring, and I don’t know who is running for that slot, but he/she will most likely be unopposed in the general anyway. Local dogcatcher is about the only other race of interest. So I just might go ahead and vote for Barney, or maybe Tulsi if she’s still around. Tulsi seems a little less crazy than Barney and is certainly easy on the eyes. OK, we’ll see if my political instincts have gotten any better than my pro football instincts. Barney in a landslide in Iowa, Biteme 4th. Lordy, I can’t even imagine anyone voting for Warren – she’s a robot and not a real person any. Maybe a space alien. 20% tip is my standard. At a very high end restaurant the percentage usually goes down simply because the wait staff is still making some serious dough off my special occasion.

The converse is true too. At a Waffle House or an equivalent the percentage goes up because I want the person to at least come away with something more than a couple bucks.

The biggest percentage tip I ever left was on Christmas day after eating breakfast in Brownwood. I made my waitress cry after leaving her a C note for her tip. That really made my day!

New Yorkers expect tips for every thing. It seems like any person in any type of service vocation expects a tip. I can’t fathom it and I know I have really ticked off more than one person in that regard.

The best way to get good service at a bar is to pay in cash. Never open a tab with a card. When the waitress brings your first drink, give her a $5 for her tip. She’ll make sure your cup runneth over all night.

86% of Iowegian Democrats say the US economy is unfair to most people.

I was eating at the bar in a restaurant a couple of weeks ago. There was an older lady next to me that just had that b***h face. As soon as I sat down she was complaining. She drank two St. Pauli Girls and paid cash. There were two one dollar bills in front of her on the inside edge of the bar. She was making leaving noises, shuffling through her humongous purse when the bartender came over and picked up the empty bottle and two bucks. She growled “Anh anh!” like she was telling her little poop-eating mangy poodle to get off her clear vinyl-covered couch. He apologized and put the money back. She left him a buck.

I’m sure the Iowegians heard it from a friend whose aunt’s boyfriend’s cousin’s neighbor was down on his luck for a spell. Otherwise everyone else in that room is probably getting along just fine.

I learned that decades ago and it’s been my practice ever since.

Picking up tips before someone leaves is bad bartending.

She was literally out of her seat with her giant satchel on her arm, pushing her barstool in and the two bucks was down in that channel.

She said her husband was dead. I ain’t buying it. He’s in hiding.

Remember when I said all Bernie and Warren could do is fly out of DC on Saturday and fly back from Des Moines on Sunday night ?

Here are the photos at the airport in Des Moines last night.

Seems the Dems new app and system for reporting statewide caucus results has suffered a malfunction – my guess is that the results are not coming in the way they had the machines programmed to report them. So they may just wind up after all is said and done of just sort of estimating who did what and who maybe won, etc. Another complete Dem clusterfark, all in the name of trying to rig the results of some screwball type of election. Typical I suppose.

#79, 80 – You would have thought that after serving together in the senate all day, the four candidates could somehow share a charter to Iowa, but oh no, they’ve got to each take a separate jet. Sort of like when Obama and Moochelle would go on vacation and take separate jets.

Even the Wolf Man is crying foul https://pjmedia.com/election/cnns-wolf-blitzer-somethings-going-on-with-delayed-iowa-caucus-results/

TP et al – 20%r here as well – rubbed off from my Dearly departed Pop as we all traveled extensively during our ’64 – ’68 residence in Tripoli Libya.

I’ve not asked my Son Guppie in ‘demographic’ fashion about his Uber & Lyft tips (he drives for BOTH)……but He regularly reports getting generally pretty good tip revenue.
*NOTE* – AFAIK these drivers are allowed to ‘pick and choose / refuse’ passengers to a certain extent……………

Just watched CBS national news report and they are covering for the Iowa Democratic Party.  I was laughing because I was just reading all the coverage online of the absolute disaster of the caucuses.  They bought an app from somebody (they won’t tell who) and it has apparently crashed and nobody knows how to fix it.  Every little caucus meeting in every little wide place in the road across the state has some little guy punching numbers into his iPad and screaming at it *&)6#@([$ !!!!        The BIG LIE is the networks are claiming it’s a “quality control issue” for the Iowa Dem Party.  LOL.

Apparently the Dems are just going to wait it out until everyone goes home and then they will sit down somewhere and decide how they want the results to look. Sort of the standard I suppose, but even CNN and MSNBS are getting concerned that this is just a little too brazen and obvious. Dems just aren’t big on voter opinions and counts and stuff like that – like Barbie said, math is hard. They’ll just announce who they want later, and that will be the end of it. What do you think this impeachment is all about? disenfranchising the voters.

#85 – Wonder if this failed app is a “diversity app,” sort of like the same group that did that “diversity bridge” or the ones that wrote obamacare website? Sounds like it.

What if there is no app and the whole thing is a ruse to stall because Bernie took 65% of the vote ?

  83. Sarge Avatar

So its dang near 8:30 and we’re still on Monday’s thread. Is this thing being run by the same folks who ran the Democrat Iowa Caucus?

(Are they the same people who ran Obama’s Obamacare website?)
