Well, we made it to the weekend, it’s shaping up to be a fine day here, 38 and warming up to the low 60’s, not as warm as yesterday, but we’ll take it.

So, trump was the first President, ever, to speak at the Pro-Life Rally. I listened to some of that on Sat Radio, and he was well received.
BTW; I saw Trump, on Fox, with the LSU Football team the other day and switched over to the Lame stream Media and not a single channel was airing the event, they, of course, ignored the Pro-Life Rally, this was on principle, doncha’ know.

The media can, shame and badmouth the President all they want, but he really is a people person and makes everyone around him feel special and that he is real glad to meet them. At the White House, with the LSU Tigers, he was praising them, by name and shaking their hands. When it was over, he told the coach, that if any of the players wanted to come to the Oval Office for pictures with him, to bring them on.

Daughter hires a lot of people, mostly guys, sometimes 40-50 in one week. Yesterday, she sent me a screen shot of a Gals resume and one of her jobs was “Director of First Impressions” this translates to, “I’m a Receptionist”. 😀

    Peterbilt Logging Truck 1953

This 1953 photo documents the largest load of logs ever hauled to the Feather River Pine Mills at Feather Falls, Ca. This is a Peterbilt truck and it carried 40,000 board feet of logs. The lumber trucks ran on butane with Hall-Scott engines. No way I would stand next to this thing.

Morning gang. Some high clouds this morning, but should be warming up nicely. I’ve seen this old weather trick several times before, but it’s getting tempting to start going outside and prepping everything for spring and getting a little jump start on growing some stuff, only to have it wiped out with severe February freezes, and then again get tricked later in the year only to have it happen once more. So this time around I’m going to fight the urge to go outside and do anything.

Still no college football Saturday, but I watched the WH visit by the LS&U Tigers last week, and I think I mentioned that I was impressed by what a fine looking and acting group of gentlemen they were. I’m pretty sure that those individual Oval Office photos will be lifetime treasures for those young men as they move on to face the real world in the future.

Now as for today’s scheduled events, there aren’t any just yet, but I’ll get getting to that “todo” list here any minute now. Some of you may wonder, “does he ever actually do anything on those todo lists, or does he just spend all day thing up stuff to add to the todo list?” Well, I can assure you that different people have different ideas of what actually doing something really means. I haven’t gotten anything done by levitation yet, but if it is actually possible, I should be the first one to find out how to make it work. So far though, no luck- I still have to walk over and physically make something move. But if I could master that levitation idea, I’d be much more productive – let’s just leave it at that.

OK, you all have a great one, and more later as it develops.

This is a CNN article so all caveats, as with Wikipedia, apply and the risk of it being fake news is a 50/50 proposition.

The first person diagnosed with the Wuhan coronavirus in the United States is being treated by a few medical workers and a robot.

The robot, equipped with a stethoscope, is helping doctors take the man’s vitals and communicate with him through a large screen, said Dr. George Diaz, chief of the infectious disease division at the Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington.
The man, who is in his 30s, was diagnosed with the virus on Monday. He initially went to an urgent care clinic on January 19 and told the staff that he was concerned about possibly having symptoms of the novel coronavirus because he recently traveled to Wuhan, China, Diaz said.

Well, I had thought I’d go down to TC Jester Park and pitch in for the tree planting that CoH is doing today. But I saw 42F on the weather gadget and changed my mind about being outside this morning. guess what I picked up off the side of the road today?….

You guys came up with some fine answers, but didn’t hit the mark. Believe or not, the boy came closest to what I thought the answer might be,….Possum, ST, just rolled her eyes and didn’t hazard a guess, but it was really only an REA Spool, you can’t have too many of them…But DAYAAM, that thing was heavy, I had a hell of a time getting it into the back of the truck. Brand new, BTW, still had a small piece of aluminum wire on it. I picked it up on Dillard Station Road, where the REA is replacing poles and stringing new wire.

When I was just a yute in my single digits I found one of those things. I wound up standing on the axle and walking it around the neighborhood. I figure it was 3′ or so across the wheel. Mom and Dad weren’t so happy when I walked it into the yard.

This is a relatively new phenomenon but it seems the perpetrators are usually women. I think this is her poop face.

This is an old phenomenon.  When I was a teen I worked as pin chaser and janitor at the local bowling alley.  About twice a month some jack honkey (women and men) would leave a gift for me in front of the toilet.  And on other days “poop face” would leave a package in the parking lot.  Happened at the base swimming pool too.  I hated my job.

A feminist professor at Oxford University was given two security guards to protect her from potentially violent transgender activists furious over some of the things she wrote on her website, according to a report Friday.

Selina Todd, a historian who focuses on the lives of working-class women, received threats after writing that trans people sometimes “harm the rights of women,” according to the UK Telegraph.

    RE: #5

I was driving a big new company Cadillac limo with my boss in the passenger seat at about 2 AM on Hwy. 59 headed south to Houston after having an auction up near Shreveport.  I was about 25 years old and a low altitude flyer.  There was no, I mean none, traffic on the road.  It was dark, misting and foggy when I rounded a curve between Timpson and Tenaha and came face to face with a rogue lumber-bootlegger 18 wheeler that had just pulled onto the two lane highway from a dirt road hauling a huge load of stolen logs probably 45 feet long and…

…he was running dark with no lights…on purpose.

There was a physics problem involved here because I was traveling at about 80 mph and the pine log thief was moving away from me at about 20 mph.  This section of the road had no shoulders so the only escape route was into and around in the oncoming lane which was occupied suddenly by another 18 wheel flatbed loaded with steel.

I managed to whip around one truck, dodge the other with a few feet to spare and live to tell you about this today, but it’s one of several reasons I have always hated East Texas.  That close call still haunts me.  I know it’s not fair, but I just can’t tolerate the Piney Woods.

It was a good day to drive, and since I work from home and don’t get outside much, I jumped at the opportunity to get out. We had our meal (I had to really settle since most everything was breaded or used a flour roux or was over rice or…

I ended up with shrimp and grilled veggies. I decided to take the scenic route home, which ended up being a much longer route than I thought it would be. I added at least an hour to my drive. At least. I was driving back roads as per my GPS in the dark.

I had no problems (except the possible motorcycle cop on the dark shoulder) and it wasn’t until I was a half mile from the house that some idiot in a pickup truck dang near took off my front fender cutting between me and another too-close vehicle.

    Mornin’ Gang

  70. El Gordo Avatar

Morning gang. Went to bed early, so I’m up early. That’s just how it works these days I guess. A little froggy outside this morning, but not too cold. Faux spring is going to be tricking some of the trees into budding out here soon I think. My old half dead mesquite looks like it’s trying to put out some buds, but the sturdy old pecans are remaining dormant. I always thought a pecan tree was a lot smarter than a mesquite anyway.

I watched the President’s lawyers tee off on the Dems for a couple of hours yesterday, and it was pretty impressive to say the least. Simply pointing out the lies of both commission and of omission takes quite a while, and pointing out the requirement to jump to some of the conclusions that they reached requires even more incredulity. The one thing that continues to be obvious is just how wide and deep the swamp is, and every day should be revealing another hand in the till. And while I’d like to blame it all on the Dems, I’m sure the Reps are taking their share along the way as well. Same old deal whether at home or abroad – want a million dollar grant, cost you $150,000, etc. Why should you care if your public servant is accepting a bribe from you, because you are merely sharing government money anyway – it doesn’t cost you a dime out of pocket. And once you understand the program and get on the gravy train, you might find that it makes a lot of stops but hands out a lot of money too.

Nothing new to report this morning, so you all have a great day, and there will be more later as it develops. Now where is that todo list that I started yesterday?

    The China Myth Exposed.

From early in our nation’s history, America’s intellectuals have mostly looked down on their own country and yearned for it to be like someplace else–someplace more sophisticated, and more in tune with “modern” intellectual currents, whatever they might be at the moment. That is a long history, which I will skip over. In our own time, American intellectuals have claimed that Soviet Russia, Germany and Japan were harbingers of the future that the U.S. needed to imitate. In each case, the point was that we had to shed our archaic freedoms and enter the brave new world of central planning under the control–benign, of course!–of intellectuals and bureaucrats. Strangely, however, American free enterprise has managed to outlast and surpass all of those supposedly more advanced challengers.

Most recently, China has been the favored nation of the future. It has the advantage over Germany and Japan of being straightforwardly authoritarian (if no longer exactly Communist), which endeared it to anti-democratic liberals like Tom Friedman. Thus, liberals have eagerly calculated the future time when China’s GDP–or alleged GDP, as dictatorships have always been better at producing statistics than goods and services–would surpass ours. Given that China has three times our population, that would not seem to be a signal accomplishment. Nevertheless, liberals looked forward to it.

There was always something a little half-hearted about China adulation, however. When I was a kid, China was synonymous with poverty. Mothers really did say: “Eat your brussels sprouts! There are lots of starving children in China who would love to have them.” In 1979, China opened itself to foreign investment, and thousands of American companies built factories there over the succeeding decades, drawn mainly by the lure of cheap labor.

    And,

Which brings us to the current coronavirus outbreak. Once again, China is the source of a rather bizarre viral illness. It arose, apparently, in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The source of the virus is believed to be either bats or snakes that were bought for consumption in the Wuhan market in a “warm” state–that is, freshly slaughtered. The virus apparently mutated and jumped from bats or snakes to humans.

#76, El Gordo, I too, watched a lot of the President’s men, pointing out simple facts and showing witnesses saying, they didn’t see trump commit an impeachable offence. My favorite one was when the incredulous, European Ambassador, Sondland, admitted that Trump told him that he wanted nothing from the Ukrainians.
So, now we have the question, how many Democrats do you think will vote no to Impeachment? Will any Republicans vote for it? I ask because even though most of these people, on both sides of the aisle, are weasels and vote for their own hide first. BUT, everyone one on the planet, except for a few, maybe 30%, of the totally deranged Bat Schitzle crazy, left wing wacko’s, knows Trump is not guilty. Do you think any of the Democrats can vote their conscience, assuming, of course, they actually have one?

  73. El Gordo Avatar

Dems always accuse the Reps of doing whatever it is that the Dems are really doing. So, when Bugeyes tells the Senators that their heads will be on a pike if they don’t vote against impeachment of the President, what he is really saying is that if a Dems votes against impeachment, it will be that Dems head on a pike. There’s no doubt that the Bidens are up to their areola with corruption in Ukraine, so the logical thing to do is to accuse the President of corruption in Ukraine. Manchin might vote with the Reps, but as all things in DC, this is not about right and wrong – it’s about power, who has it, who wants it, and what lengths are they willing to go to get it. The obvious answer is there is no limit. Once this impeachment is over, the Dems will just go back to the dirty tricks bag and pull out something else. Meanwhile, you can expect to see “new evidence” appearing every day, if not every hour, until the final vote is taken.

Two things that have no conscience (1) a politician and (2) a hard ……

Our pseudo Senator, Doug Jones, recently said that he might vote for one article and oppose the other. I’m not sure if he is trying to straddle the fence or he already knows that he is history. The weight of wood.

    Assumptions:

    * The wood in question is old growth redwood
    * moisture content is 50%

    40,000 board feet = ~120,000 lbs

Moisture content of wood is not calculated as you would expect:

The amount of water in a given piece of wood is expressed as a percentage of the weight of the water as compared to its ovendry weight. Some species of trees, when they are initially felled, may contain more water by weight than actual wood fiber, resulting in a moisture content (MC) over 100%.

Moisture Content % = (weight of water / ovendry weight of wood) x 100

    I just guessed at 50%.

I think Manchin will vote with the GOP as a precursor to November. He knows Trump’s chances in November are looking pretty good. Hamous the front quarter of the Tacoma looks remarkable like the front quarter of our ’18 4-Runner. The wife has indicated that I can start modifying it in about another year. Maybe by then I will be able to get rid of my Excursion.

We only have one other dad with a vehicle that can tow the Scout trailer. Actually we do have a brand new boy whose father drives a Tundra, but he didn’t go on his boy’s first camp out with the Troop last weekend so the jury is still out on him.

Last year there was one camp out where both myself and the other truck owner couldn’t make it so they couldn’t tow the trailer. The other parents had to spend an extra 45 min playing Tetris with everyone’s personal gear AND all the Troop gear.

Speaking of Scouts, the boy that broke his tibia and fibula had surgery on Friday. Fortunately he did not have to have plates. The surgeon used traction and some other methods to straighten everything out. It was an outpatient procedure and he went home in a soft cast. After the swelling goes down he will be fitted with a hard cast this Thursday.

I’d like to eventually add a dual battery system to the 4-Runner so that I can run a DC powered fridge. They draw about 2 amp-hours so you can feasibly run an entire weekend off one 100 Amp-hour deep cycle battery. Of course that is not enough time so I know I’ll add a solar provision to keep the battery topped off.

I’d also like to add a mild lift, replace the front bumper with provisions for a winch, replace the rear bumper with one that can swing out to accommodate extra storage such as Jerry cans for water, fuel, and recovery gear.

All that stuff is cool to have, but since Texas is mostly privately owned there is not many places to use it. I could be like my BIL and make trips down to may-hee-co, but I’d probably head out west to tackle trails out there. I live vicariously through several You-Tubers. We were up cooking breakfast and heard some dude screaming at the top of his lungs. About that time a tire and wheel comes flying past us down the hill with the dude hot on its heels. I don’t know if he expected someone to catch it but the entire campground was laughing in unison. It bounced and rolled all the way to the lake.

RE:  Texpat’s 18 wheeler observations nee rants

iIgot a few rules about 18 wheelers that I follow and you would do well to follow also.

    1. Never never never ride closer than 6 car lengths behind a tractor trailer.  I do not care if you are in bumper to bumper traffic 6 car lengths minimum.  If you cannot see a trucker mirrors he cannot see you.  At speed you should stay 6 car lengths behind, better yet 1 car length per 10 mph., that is a fair distance for the trucker to spy you .  6 car lengths is the minimum distance I know of that you can see the mirrors.
    2.  Never never never pass or ride on the right side of a tractor trailer.  Passing on the right is illegal and any trucker worth his salt if confronted with a split decision emergency will always pull right to escape.  Shoulders are generally on the right side as well as grssy medians in the city.  The right side is a huge blind spot as far as I am concerned.  It is damn hard to see a four wheeler driving on the right side.
    3. If you are in front a tractor trailer GET AWAY.  If you get a jerk off that tailgates swallow your pride and let him by or jump on the pedal and pull away.  If you are caught either side of a tractor trailer get out of those positions.  If the trucker needs to escape, and braking does not appear to be an answer to keep from running into someone he is going to go left or right and if you are there you gonna get squashed.   In mass traffic a trucker will rear end the guy in front if he sees no escape.  STAY AWAY FROM HEAVY TRUCKS IS THE SIMPLEST RULE OF THUMB.  Do whatever it takes to get away and put distance between you and him.
    4. Not all truckers are sweet, lovable, courteous drivers like me.

    2. Never never never pass or ride on the right side of a tractor trailer. Passing on the right is illegal and any trucker worth his salt if confronted with a split decision emergency will always pull right to escape.

Riding in the left lane below the speed limit creating a rolling roadblock is also illegal. More and more truckers do that these days. Sometimes the only way to get around them is to find a gap on the right.

    2. STAY AWAY FROM HEAVY TRUCKS IS THE SIMPLEST RULE OF THUMB

No one is forced to pass on the right for any reason save the normal jostle in bumper to bumper traffic.  If traffic sucks back off.  Let others go around you and put them in front of you as a buffer.  I prefer tractor trailers to be in front of me so to speak.  If crap breaks loose at speed and that guy is gonna rear end someone at speed he is gonna push cars up into you.  If I am far enough behind him I get to watch the show.

They’ve got enough problems in our traffic justin find space, not to mention the idiots who cut them off and ignore the laws of physics. I swear, some of the four wheelers on the road must assume their guardian angels will protect them from stupidity.

I’ve spent some interesting times on Lake Travis over a 32 year period from 1968 to 2000.  This is the wildest experience.

One perfect summer Sunday, my friend, Robin, and I decided to go down to Lake Travis across from Lakeway where Siesta Shores is now.  There was a small marina where we could put in a boat and a place we could set up a day camp to eat and drink.

Just as we were backing the boat trailer down to the ramp, we heard all this screaming and commotion.  Suddenly a good sized ski boat comes roaring by, right in front of us, with a couple of guys and a bunch of girls in bikinis in it.  There is nothing unusual about that except they were towing a tall, stunningly beautiful blonde on water skis who was buck nekkid and she was laughing hysterically.  The boat was being chased by at least half a dozen drunken frat boys on jet skis who were out of control.  Shortly behind them came a couple of Travis County Sheriff’s Dept. boats in hot pursuit with lights and sirens and PA systems blaring.  They all disappeared around the bend and we never did get to see the final ending to that circus act.

    Re Big rigs:

If I ever pass a truck on the right, I make darn sure the coast is clear. I don’t make it a habit, but I have done it.

I’ve owned big trucks/SUVs and little cars. I know in my Excursion that I can “lose” a small sporty car that is right up on my right side. I can definitely imagine the same effect with a big rig.

For some reason, I didn’t extrapolate that concept out to motorcycling. I have never passed a big rig on the right, but I have taken my time passing on the left. Several months ago, I rode with Katfish up towards Dallas and I saw how he and our chapter president pass big rigs. When it is safe to do so, they gunned it up to 20 – 30 mph faster than the big rig so that we were only beside it for the absolutely briefest period of time. I’ve taken that lesson to heart.

I’ve never forgotten that man’s voice.

Man I worry bout bikers.  I would much rather see a long line of bikers than a solo.  Seriously, when I drove I took extra looks when changing lanes for bikers.  I am not being critical here but from the cab those guys are hard to see.

I saw the results of  car passing on the right of a semi.  The trucker cleared to the rear but the car was in that blind spot between the cab and trailer.  What is really sad is there was no traffic on a 6 lane interstate and the trucker was moving from center to exit.  I know it sounds stupid but in the same situation I go to the center lane to inside lane to go around a trucker.

Just to be clear, when I pass a truck on the right it’s because he has no intention of moving over, as he has been over there for the last 20 freaking miles driving 60 in a 75 and has had multiple opportunities to move over. Not sorry.

My #164. Apparently he was a helicopter pilot but not IRF capable. Entering Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) when you are only Visual Flight Rules (VFR) rated often does not turn out well, as this case demonstrates. The reverences to Special VFR means that he got trapped on top of the clouds and has no was to come down without entering them (creating IFR conditions). Like flying inside a ping pong ball, absolutely no outside references and easy to get disoriented. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0pQfgi9ZqU I feel for his family and the loss of his daughter as well as several other people.

Riding in the left lane below the speed limit creating a rolling roadblock is also illegal. More and more truckers do that these days. Sometimes the only way to get around them is to find a gap on the right.

There are lots of idiots out there. And that includes gravel haulers out of Colorado County doing 50-70mph in the inside lane on I-10 – through a 16 mile long construction zone.

I make a trip once a week 59S, 10 spur, 36, and I 10 from Sealy to Columbus. And back.

They are not creating a roadblock, they are just jerks. They see you coming, they are going to pass the other 18 wheeler at +.5 mph faster than than the driver in front of them, and pull into the left lane just as you approach their bumper.

I-10 is only going to get worse. There are plans to turn it into a “freight corridor” from Long Beach to Jacksonville. Mercifully, my days of traveling back and forth on I-10 will be over long before that project comes to fruition.

One can exit at Bernardo and get back on, going west, without passing through any stops to pass and get back on. Pavement is a little rough there last pass through.

    Breaking…

    SCOTT@SCOTT7680995

    Breaking news :

The Katyusha missile attack that hit the US embassy in Baghdad two hours ago killed one American soldier and wounded five American civilian employees working at the embassy. The wounded will be transferred to Kuwait.

There will be hell to pay here.

An embassy or consulate is considered equivalent to any other property within the boundaries of the relevant sovereign nation via longstanding treaties signed at Geneva in 1961 and 1963.

I would expect there to be an ominous period of silence before we respond.  Just like the Israelis do it.  Let them build up their fear and paranoia.  Let them stew in the fright never knowing when or how or who.

Latest report I can find says nine dead in the copter crash. Since there were reportedly 5 on board, that would mean some fatalities on the ground, but the photos look like it is out in the pasture somewhere. Apparently there have been numerous reports, all in error, speculating on who and how many may have been involved. One reporter starts a rumor, and the rest of them run with it, until someone else starts a new one, then they run with that for a while.

I saw somewhere earlier that there was a reported fatality in the Iraq attack, but the latest report that I’ve seen says none, so there’s another story that has to be discounted. If there are fatalities, Trump must respond quickly, if none, he can take his time.

    OK, night all. Sweet dreams.

Morning gang. Off on a road trip later this morning to see the Docs in Marble Falls. Should be another beautiful spring day out here in centex. Maybe up to 75 degrees this afternoon. I’m going to miss some of the impeachment talk today while traveling. Maybe someone will record it for me – like You Tube maybe. Kobe’s helicopter crash may have finished off whatever hopes of TV publicity the impeachment hoax intended to create anyway. Heck, watching the weeds grow has been better than that Schifft Show anyway.

Anyway, you all have a great day, and I’ll report back later when I get a chance.
