Brian Mast walked to the podium of the House of Representatives, on prosthetic legs, to deliver his opinion of those members who supported the “war powers resolution” criticizing President Trump.  Mast was awarded the bronze star for his bravery and valor after losing his legs and a finger to an Iranian IED.

I know most in here haven’t seen or smelled or touched that kind of death, but let me tell you about it. They were burned alive inside their Humvees. Their lungs were scorched by the flames of the explosions. The vehicle fragments were blown into their skulls. Some of them were paralyzed. Some of them had their arms blown off. Some of them had their legs blown off. Some of them will never see again. Some of them will never be recognized again by those who knew them previously. Each and every one of them – they are the credible explanation for deleting this terrorist target from our world. And, no doubt, it is dangerous to take out a terrorist target, but a coward is somebody who lacks the courage to endure danger”

According to a letter sent today to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that was just obtained by The Daily Wire, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced Texas’s refusal to accept any additional refugees for fiscal year (FY) 2020. The letter was prompted by Executive Order 13888, on “Enhancing State and Local Involvement in Refugee Resettlement,” which was issued by President Donald Trump on September 26, 2019.

According to the text of the September executive order, “[t]he Federal Government consults with State and local governments … to be respectful of those communities that may not be able to accommodate refugee resettlement.” Furthermore, “if either a State or locality has not provided consent to receive refugees under the Program, then refugees should not be resettled within that State or locality,” and “the Secretary shall notify the President of such decision.”

Please note that the Mozilla alert does not include Linux users, which incidentally use Firefox as the default browser. And the cure for those poor Win and Apple users, is to load the upgrade which was probably automatically done anyway. More scare tactics. Just to be safe, use Linux. Mint is my fave, but other more sophisticated users than me use Ubuntu. Got an old, worn out, slow computer that you have given up on, load Linux and watch it spring back to life. Better than a goat gland transplant (you have to be a certain old age and to know who Wolfman Jack was to understand this one) or any of today’s low T treatments. Go for it – you only live once.

Working on Opera right now – this is MIL’s computer which I appropriated for my new downstairs unit and she had it loaded already – and am in the process of installing Brave as an alternate browser. I am avoiding using the Chromium browser that is also infesting this unit.

Getting up late this morning. LD2 has a birthday very soon, and I was crocheting a bag to hold some of the items that I purchased for her. I was on roll, not feeling sleepy, so I have it 99% done since I stayed up past 2:00 a.m. to finish it. It’s pretty and includes pink yarn, so I think she’ll like it. But that means I allowed myself to stay in bed late. I heard a little bit of a storm before crashing, but it wasn’t anything like the WE’RE GONNA DIE warnings had me expecting.

All I need is a button and I probably should block it, if I can find my blocking board upstairs in my crafting chaos.

Another 2 skeins of yarn down!

I also made huge progress in my paperwork backlog, now that I’m not being eaten alive by the daily requirements of the plumbing company. I have taken a 4″ pile of paperwork to a half inch, and I finally see the wood on my desk! I HIT WOOD! That’s always a good feeling. I still have work to do – a lot of cleaning up as per my CPA, and I need to catch up on all of my bank reconciliations, but it’s such a relief to see a light at the end of that tunnel!

Back when the legendary D.X. Bible was just a 30 year old assistant coach at Texas A&M.

On November 24, 1921, possibly the first broadcast of a football game in the country aired from the Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Texas A&M University) via call letters 5XB, which is now WTAW. The station operated as a ham relay station at 250 watts. Originally, the station was to air the final score of the Texas–Texas A&M Thanksgiving game, but Frank Matejka, W. A. Tolson, and others decided to send a play-by-play account of the game via Morse Code. Student Harry Saunders and assistant coach D. X. Bible designed a set of abbreviations to fit every possible football situation and sent the list to every station that would broadcast the contest. The game aired over the ham relay stations; the Morse Code was decoded and announced to fans over a public-address system.

Our parents would talk about football god D.X. Bible from their time at UT in the 1940s like we used speak about Darrell Royal in the 1960s.

They have a revolt on their hands.

North Manchester, Ind., a tiny conservative town that resides in a county that voted 72% for Donald Trump, is embroiled in the cultural battle of their lives. In December, parents of students at North Manchester Elementary found out that the school was allowing a biological boy to use the girls’ bathroom without notifying parents or passing any policy that was debated in a public meeting. As a result, multiple families pulled their children out of the school at the urging of Nate Gephart, a father turned activist who had finally had enough. The superintendent, Dr. Teresa Gremaux, claims that federal law under Title IX is forcing the school to allow a tiny minority of gender-confused children to invade the privacy of everyone else.

“Well, I don’t think so, but we will tell you that probably it was going to be the embassy in Baghdad,” Trump said. “You saw that happening. You saw with all of the men, very few women, circling it and circling it very strongly and very viciously, knocking out windows and trying to get and they were close to getting in, and I called out the military.”

“They said we’ll have it there tomorrow,” Trump continued. “I said, nope, you’ll have it there today. We’re not going to have another Benghazi on our hands.”

“I think you would have had another Benghazi had we not acted quickly,” Trump added. “That could have been stopped, and this was stopped. And we had our Apaches going there, the great helicopters, and they were dropping flares all over the place, and a lot of things were happening. They had acted real fast and everybody disappeared.”

Good evening Hamsters. Well we got strong winds, a some small hailstones, and 1.17″ of rain last night with the front. It was not quiet. The wind tore several respectable-sized branches off two pecan trees in the back pasture, and lots of small branches were scattered everywhere there and in the front and back yards.

One large pecan trunk broke off near the back fence and leaned on the TV cable wire and the ground electrical wire, sagging both significantly. Called HL & P to come get it off, and they got here within the hour. Fortunately we’re near a substation. Never lost power after the limb settled down on the wires, but while they were bouncing during the storm we thought for sure the power would stay off.

Wind was strong enough to topple a large and heavy urn on the front porch and eject the artificial bunch of poinsettias and some plastic bags used as fillers to hold them in. The bags landed in the front and back yards. The bunch of poinsettias landed in the paddock at the side of the house. All sizes of branches were scattered here and there randomly in all the yards. The wind and rain came about 11:30 and rushed through fast, maybe half an hour total. Woke us up to lightning flashes almost continuously for a few minutes and rain pounding on the patio cover roof.

Daylight showed our next-door neighbor’s old and hollow very large pecan tree was broken off at the lower trunk and landed in their side yard, fortunately missing their house and our pasture fence.

My former next door neighbor and good friend was a very talented mechanic, shade tree engineer and extraordinary luthier.  He had his luthier works in the basement where he could control the humidity and keep it clean away from the mechanical stuff going on in the garage.  His guitars sold for $4,000 to $6,000 and he swore he made $35 to $40 an hour per instrument.  I believed him knowing what a perfectionist he is.

I got a call from Green Cousin this afternoon. She is officially now on the liver transplant list. Hubby and I have a rental house nearby that isn’t ready to rent but darn close to livable condition for cousin & family to use. Hubby can hook up the final plumbing lines from the bathroom renovation in an afternoon, and any remaining painting, door hanging, etc., can happen after they move in. We already have utilities on in our name, so they can just reimburse us and not worry about utility deposits. I had a talk with them this afternoon and reassured them that I have enough crap in this house to do most of the basic furnishing, including a bed or two not being used right now. I have a bureau not in use, we have some metal chairs and some folding tables so they’ll have a place to sit and eat. The unit comes with a frig and stove, so that’s taken care of. I’m sure I have extra plates and silverware, etc., and I’m sure I can scare up some extra casserole dishes and a pan or two. As I told them, anything that we can’t supply can be found in any of the plethora of thrift stores around the area.

They are going to follow Hubby’s suggestion to contact the constabulary along the route from Huntington to Houston to ask how best to ensure that they can make the trip in 3 hours or less. One traffic jam and she’ll be screwed on getting her transplant, and that trip is already a few hours in length.

Their bags are packed and cell phones are living on chargers. They can be out the door in five when “the call” comes.

I had to call cousin after returning from mass with the confirmation class. This was the first time the newly combined classes attended together. I shouldn’t have been shocked, but I was:

    * No genuflecting upon entering the pew.
    * They were just sitting there like lumps during mass. I had to demand that they pull out their missalettes and use them. One girl rolled her eyes at me.
    * I watched them during the mass. Most of them had no idea what the responses were, even with the missalette right in front of them. No wissing clue.
    * The two girls in front of me thought it was social hour. Talked all through the mass.
    * They resisted my orders to kneel during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Sorry, but if Jesus is on the altar, we show reverence by not sitting on our butts unless there’s a medical issue. They’re lucky our church has pews; some churches in Europe don’t have them and they’d have to stand the entire mass.

I wanted to smack a few smug faces, but after mass we had a literal “come to Jesus meeting” and explained a few things, such as attending mass in blue jeans or any other unacceptable attire will get you the highly prized old brown choir robe to wear. (That’s the brain child of our coordinator, who can be a bit of a harda$$, which I love.) I explained that we reverence our Lord by genuflecting appropriately and following the proper gestures during mass, such as kneeling and – HORRORS – contributing to the liturgy by learning what our contributions are to the process.

I made sure I spoke loudly enough that the parents and sponsors also in attendance could hear me. I know where these kids have learned their attitude…

A prominent pro-Iran militia commander has been killed by unidentified gunmen in Iraq.

High-level Popular Mobilization Forces leader Taleb Abbas Ali al-Saedi was shot dead late on Saturday in Karbala, a city about 62 miles southwest of Baghdad.

Local media reported that al-Saedi was ‘assassinated’ by unknown gunmen, but no further details about the shooters were immediately available.

Al-Saedi was the commander of the Karbala Brigades, a unit within the Iran-backed Shiite PMF umbrella group.

    Verse 1]
Well no one told me about her
    The way she lied
Well no one told me about her
    How many people cried

    [Pre-Chorus]
But it’s too late to say you’re sorry
How would I know why should I care?
Please don’t bother trying to find her
    She’s not there!

    [Chorus]
Well let me tell you ’bout the way she looked
The way she’d acted, the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool
Her eyes were clear and bright
    But she’s not there

    [Verse 2]
Well no one told me about her
    What could I do?
Well no one told me about her
    Though they all knew

    [Pre-Chorus]
But it’s too late to say you’re sorry
How would I know, why should I care?
Please don’t bother trying to find her

    Mornin’ Gang

  79. El Gordo Avatar

Morning Brother Dave. I guess the rest of the gang will be along shortly. Glad that you made your return trip safely, and can’t wait to hear what they offered you for your consulting contract, or whatever the big news is. In the mid 30’s here this morning, but the south wind has returned and looking for a quick warm-up today. Every year about this time, the nice days begin to appear, and the outdoors gardening starts to look like it makes sense. Stuff all starts off nice, gets and early sprouting, and boom, blue norther takes it all out in one night. So don’t fall for this early spring talk yet, we’ve got a long way to go. Well, you Houston folks seldom get a freeze, so you might be all right.

Tomorrow night is the college football game of the century, and I’ll be disappointed if it is not a good one. A good one is defined of course as LS&U winning bigly. Last time I looked, the spread was around 5 points in LS&U favor, and they should win by more than that, but as sure as I went and placed a bet, Clemson would sneak a way in to win or at least cover the spread, so that’s one more reason I don’t bet on football.

I started considering tapping into the power line that feeds the little “on/off” led light on the front of the Maggie as a source to power the blue tooth dongle. That light has not worked since I started fooling with the re-do, but it’s been a low priority item and I haven’t fooled with it so far. Well, yesterday I turned the unit on, dialed up Pandora on the computer, made the bluetooth connection, and let Maggie start singing. And lo and behold, the little indicator led light came on. Just again proves one of my theories that I’m sure Brother Dave would agree with – if you treat these electronic devices nice and don’t swear at them too much or make threatening noises when you talk to them, they will respond much better.

OK, here’s hoping that you all have a great day. More later as it develops.

And they would figure out a was to blame Trump for it as well, until they figured out that the US voters approved of the action.

This might get exciting here in a minute. Buck is a monster, and the doe seems to be keeping her distance, but not too much distance. She’s sort of acting like she doesn’t know that he is there, the old hard to get routine. Great way to start the day by watching Mother Nature in live action. About 200 yards away, on the power line, I saw a buck and doe, flirting, with the buck making advances and the doe easing away and teasing him. I stopped for a minute to watch and the doe squatted and did her business, while the buck had his nose in the air, sniffing. I went on down the road and when I came back by about 15 minutes later they were,…. well, they were, heing and sheing. it would have been neat to have a movie camera with a long lens.

The football gods have never given favor to Houston regarding pro ball, a couple of notes – this will be the second championship game for the Titans since they left. The Titans coach is a former Texans DC they let go.

    25 English Contronyms

Words that have dual meanings exactly opposite of one another.

    1. Sanction (via French, from Latin sanctio(n-), from sancire ‘ratify,’) can mean “give official permission or approval for (an action)” or conversely, “impose a penalty on.”

    2. Oversight is the noun form of two verbs with contrary meanings, “oversee” and “overlook.” Oversee, from Old English ofersēon (“look at from above”) means “supervise” (medieval Latin for the same thing: super-, “over” plus videre, “to see.”) Overlook usually means the opposite: “to fail to see or observe; to pass over without noticing; to disregard, ignore.”

    3. Left can mean either remaining or departed. If the gentlemen have withdrawn to the drawing room for after-dinner cigars, who’s left? (The gentlemen have left and the ladies are left.)

FWIW; I’ve not taken the time to seriously research the Senate candidates, I know I’m SOO ashamed, but I do know who I’ll not be voting for, Jeff Sessions. When he left the Senate, I honestly thought that he was the best Senator of all 100 of them. I agreed with pretty much 100% and his outspoken stand on immigration was certainly the best. He was one of Trump’s first supporters, back before I was a Cruz supporter. I voted for Trump, because even though I really didn’t believe he was as conservative as he said he was, I had no other choice. Then I fund out he’s the best President since Reagan, by a long shot. His first Supreme Court appointee made my vote worth it, even if he didn’t do a damn thing else.

How many cords of wood do you burn through a winter ?

It naturally depends on the how cold it gets. I had about 4.5 cords put up but this cold spell is supposed to last another week which will put a significant dent in that. My trailer has a load I need to buck up and split, another half cord. I think if I am careful I might just make it. If not I am surrounded by pine and spruce forests with lots of standing dead. Makes a nice outing on a relatively warm day.

Sidebar: Who knew that Baltimore had a damn football team? AND that they were good? But I digress, if the Texans beat KC, they play the Tampons and will most likely beat them, (according to the boy), and they will be the AFC champs and go to the Super Bowl?!?! Nobody told me that they were even in the running. The bad news is, that Seattle, Green Bay, or the 49er’s will be on the NFL side. Well, I’m glad you didn’t tell him that NFL is all rigged. Sort of like when you find out about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy to the real fans. Usually the NFL lets one team go to the super bowl that comes from a distressed city like Detroit, or the Saints when NOLA flooded or stuff like that. Maybe they are looking at Houston’s flooding in the same light. The Tampons managed to go shortly after they moved out of Houston and found out the did not have a big fan base in Tennessee, so it was a gift to them to let them have something to crow about. I guess if Tennessee beat the best team in the NFL that would be enough to prove my point right there – and probably on the last play of the game or some such nonsense. OK, enough on the NFL.

Wrote along reply and then hit the refresh button by mistake.

The stove is a regular air tight. We don’t have oak here so it’s pine, spruce, poplar and birch.

You take standing dead and you can usually use it right away. If fresh cut it needs to dry for a minimum six months here. Probably a year in Texas with the humidity.  You can tell by the weight if it’s ready. Fresh cut weighs twice what well seasoned wood does.

I sweep the chimney two, three times a year. When it warms up some I will let the fire go out and clean it first chance. It is usually too bad but it a high use time right now. Takes about 30 minutes to an hour with getting the equipment ready and then putting it away.

I had a good afternoon…drove to Bryan to meet prospective tenant and her parents. What a lovely family! Daughter, the tenant, and her boyfriend will be living in the unit. She goes to Prairie View A&M, studying kinesiology and travels with the basketball team. Her mother and I hit it off right away on the phone, both of us being church goin’ mommas. I met the father today, and he works for Bryan Housing Department, so as I was going through the lease and all of its restrictions and warnings, he was nodding his head and saying, “Yep, she’s right. I’ve seen it.” He followed that with “You won’t have to worry about that with us.” Mom and Dad are prepared to pay utilities and help with rent if necessary. Dad left with the other two little ones in one car and Mom stayed with Daughter as we finished going through the lease. When I got to late fees and penalities, she was totally on board with the provisions, being especially pleased when I brought up the “buy out” provision for early lease exit. It was one of the most pleasant transactions I’ve had with potential tenants.

Daughter is going to go through the lease with her boyfriend before signing. They’ll be emailing me their application, sending their fee with Zelle directly into our account. Once they pass their background check, we’ll calculate the prorated rent, finish signing the lease and email the paperwork back and forth. Our existing tenant has the keys and will deliver them for us when I give her the go ahead.

It was a lovely day to get out of the house and into the sunshine. Nice day, nice folks, and potentially and probably nice tenants. Good day.

Hubby shared an interesting story. One of my elder brothers is a rock solid, down to earth, outspoken guy. He’s the first to call bullstuff and usually quite firmly. His career has been in the construction trades, and is a supervisor for a major building firm in the Houston area.

He was called on to review blueprints and the condition and repairs needed on a nursing home flooded by Harvey. The building has been gutted but the owners failed to keep the licensing active so in order to rebuild, they have to upgrade everything to newer, stricter codes instead of being grandfathered under the conditions of their original license.

Bro was walking through the empty building, all by himself, and noting discrepancies between the architectural designs and reality on the ground, and making general notes for constructing the bid. No one was with him, but he kept hearing noises and turning around to see who was there – no one. In a couple of places, there were condensation puddles in the hallway (which he noted as a problem).

Then he found footprints, wet footprints, extending from a puddle as if someone was following him. They weren’t his.

There was also a trash can that was not just knocked over, but thrown, and its contents dispersed over a wide area.

    Freaky.

OK, so we all know that the Squawkster is an old curmudgeon, much like me, or a Sasquatch but y’all also know that he has an eye for taking fine wildlife pictures. So, at the risk of P…ing him Off, check out this picture, a White Faced Ibis. Check out the iridescent wing feathers, purple to green, aqua and pink. I love this picture.

I just looked up an old classmate who’s running for Congress.

In high school, he was considered one of the dorkier kids. Became a lawyer. Looking at his picture now…let’s just say that he’s aged well. Cute kids, too.

That means we’ve got to be willing to do things, for example, like regulation. By 2028, no new buildings, no new houses, without a zero carbon footprint.

By 2030, trucks — light-duty trucks and cars, zero carbon footprint. By 2035, all production of electricity, zero carbon footprint.

Chief Justice John Roberts not only appointed Judge James E. Boasberg to the FISA courts, but also elevated him to the senior position of FISA Presiding Judge of all FISA courts in December 2019.  Boasberg is an Obama appointee and the first Democrat to be head judge at FISA in almost 25 years.

Zero carbon footprint is not only a myth, it’s a flat-out lie and everyone knows it except the Asperger Brat. Even if all humans were wiped off the face of the earth it wouldn’t be true. 100% of life on the planet is carbon based.

This David Kris appointment to reform the FISA courts is already swirling into a sh*tstorm.

#177 Hamous. Precisely. Also won’t get rid of carbon if there were no organic compounds. What do these idiots think diamonds are? Pure carbon.
