    Toonerville Trolley opens for business
    December 12th, 1910

On this day in 1910, the “Toonerville Trolley” streetcar line began operating between Houston and the suburban community of Bellaire. Railroad executive William Wright Baldwin, acting as president of the South End Land Company, founded Bellaire and Westmoreland Farms after purchasing the 9,449-acre Rice Ranch in 1908. The development was six miles from Houston on the eastern edge of the ranch named for its former owner, William Marsh Rice. By 1910 Baldwin had invested over $150,000 in capital improvements to turn the treeless prairie into an attractive location for residences and small truck farms. From the site to Main Street in Houston he constructed Bellaire Boulevard. He also incorporated the Westmoreland Railroad Company to build an electric streetcar line down the center of the boulevard. The Toonerville Trolley operated from 1910 until bus service replaced it on September 26, 1927. The line was typical of the many electric streetcar lines that played an important role in the urban growth of Texas. The town of Bellaire was eventually surrounded by Houston, but it remained a separate city.

Busy day ahead. Our Scout Troop’s charter organization, Sugar Land First United Methodist Church, has their annual Giving Tree.

The church selects families in need who then submit a wish list. The church purchases items that are both wants and needs. Today those families will arrive and they have activities planned for the children and the adults.

When the families leave, a person will radio back a number that corresponds to a family. The Scouts will load up everything and wheel it to the front on hand trucks and flat bed carts.

My biggest job this morning will be to ensure the Scouts do not start up their annual hand truck race / demolition derby going up and down the halls. 🙂

After the Giving Tree, we go home, change, and go to the boys’ cello recital.

It ain’t no fancy classic GMC, but…

On New Year’s Eve, Fay’s little Dodge Dakota turns 20 years old. 115K miles. Super clean. Six cylinder. Darn near smoke the tires.
Most uncomfortable bucket seat on the planet. Notable features: AC, Auto, Radio, and that’s it. No frills, that’s for sure. Everyone that comes near it asks when are you gonna sell it? Sorry, her son has dibbs on it.

Hidden by impeachment: One of Trump’s “best weeks yet”.

Added to the list of accomplishments this week:

•An agreement on a new U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal.
•A new budget including more than $1.3 billion for a border wall and blocks a government shutdown.
•House approval of the U.S. Space Force, a brand-new branch of the military.
•Government family leave that will be a model for a proposal for the public.
•Tentative agreement on trade with China.
    •Approval of Trump’s 50th federal appeals judge.
•Confirmation of a new Food and Drug Administration chief.
    •The signing of a pro-Israel anti-Semitism executive order.

Morning gang. Bright sunny and crisp out here this morning. I’ve been cleaning and restoring and updating computers all week, and I’m very impressed with the results. I’ve upgraded everything to Linux Mint 19.2 which is a little more colorful than the versions that I’ve been running, and they’ve added a few new features but nothing earth shattering. So, I decided that since I’ve become somewhat of an expert on computer stuff lately, I would go ahead and take the Win10 mini out of the box and add minimal stuff like email accounts and addresses and my music portfolio. Firefox was able to sync all my bookmarks, along with passwords and other information seamlessly which was nice, but the other stuff requires flash drives. Well, the short version of the story is that Win 10 is designed or people who want of listen to music, watch videos, buy crap on Amazon, and otherwise use many of the convenience features of a computer, but who also take it to someone else when they want to add a feature or something. It’s dumbed down to a point lower than I can stoop I guess. Anyway, to perform even the most basic of tasks on Win 10, I have to go look it up on the other computer and then try to follow instructions. I’m pretty sure that MS development of Win10 is somehow related to a communist plot to take over our government or something. Anyway, viva la resistance – it’s Linux for me all the way, except I’m keeping the little Win10 mini around for those job times when there’s something that even just Linux won’t do.

In other news, the Army-Navy football game is today, and as far as I am concerned, it represents the absolute best that our nation and college athletics should stand for. None of those players get any special treatment at all and adds football practice to the rest of the chores that all students go through The players even have to meet the weight and height restrictions of the other cadets/midshipmen, and many of them bulk up for football and then have to slim down to meet the requirements in the spring. Not a single slacker in the bunch, and probably not many rapists and shoplifters either. The pageantry is unmatched anywhere, and the bets are placed at the highest levels. The President will attend today’s game I hear. If you’re watching, just remember that these are our future military leaders, and while there may be a few Vindeman types scattered in there, and an inordinate amount of females these days, they are still as a group the finest that this country has to offer.

OK, I’m off to something else for a while. Looks like next week will turn into another travel week, with stops planned in Dallas, Lufkin, and other scattered parts of the state. I’ve got to keep getting out to make sure that the state is being well cared for and properly managed, and from everything I’ve seen the past few years, it’s in good shape. You all have a great day now. More later.

Believe it or not, it all started with telegrams. In 1912, several countries attended a conference centered on the subject of “International Radiotelegraphs.” One of the biggest things to come out of this gathering was the assignment of certain letters to certain countries, to identify their radio and television signals – America was given W, K, N, and A (fun fact: Canada got ‘C’ and Mexico got ‘X’).

While N and A were chosen for American military radio stations, W and K were designated specifically for commercial use. Stations were allowed to choose the letters that followed the K or the W, and the combination was allowed to be three or four letters in length.

In 1928, the Federal Radio Commission decided on a few rules that remain in effect to this day:

Halftime at Army-Navy game with Navy holding a 14-7 lead. What a great ballgame. Both teams are triple option running teams, and I think there has been one pass thrown by each team. And it’s a hard hitting slugfest. Most impressive, no penalties in the first half. Well disciplined teams. This is what college football should really be all about. The President tossed the coin, visited each locker room, shook hands with all the players, coaches, refs, etc. They interview some of the players, and if you weren’t watching, you would not realize that some of them are black. Well, it has been a fine day here, about 60 for a high and bright and sunny. The wife went off to the booming metropolis of Enterprise, this afternoon, to go shopping and when she got back it was almost dark. She wanted to go feed her hens before they went to roost and was going on her Mule, taking Dawg with her. She asked me to go, so we could head down to the pond afterward, so I grabbed the old 20 Gauge and went and got MY mule and we loaded up and headed out. I took it because I knew we’d be back after dark and that old thing has a windscreen, which helps out with the wind in your face. We were heading back from the pond after dark so I turned on the headlights and said “my Mule has headlights”, she said, “so does mine” and I said, “yes, but mine has a windscreen”. 😉 I can’t tell you how much I love that old machine, GJT is probably the only one here that understands that.

I’ve spent almost all day at church, helping out. The first year confirmation prep class had their final today, and in January will be blending with our confirmation second year class (CII).

I designed payment envelopes earlier this year for the CII class, to be used to help remind parents of payments due and make it easier to process payments during classes and events. Fortunately, I printed off a pile of those before heading to church this morning.

The first two hours I proctored the final, on which the students scored dismally. I began working on the adult retreat to be conducted while the students are on their retreat out of town. After that was over, the orientation for the CI students to learn about the CII rules and expectations for them and their parents began. That began about three hours of figuring out the balances due and filling out the payment envelopes. Another lady was helping out and we had several accounts that had us flummoxed. As best we can tell, the disorganized DRE has a helper/sister who is about as “helpful” as the DRE is. It appears that some receipts are duplicated, and we may be missing several receipts. When parents asked us about the balance due listed on their envelope, we tried to rifle back through the book, but this was while we had other families waiting to pay their fees.

I’m going to meet this lady and the CI catechist Wednesday afternoon and we are going to have to recreate a payment timeline for every dang student and try to determine what they actually owe. What a royal, unnecessary PITA that is going to be.

And my brain is fried now. I’m not doing anything that requires more than minimal brain activity. I guess that means I’m a liberal for the rest of the night.

What a gorgeous picture to enjoy again. No wonder the weather guy wanted to use it. Truly spectacular.

We miss you folks in the Houston neighborhood, but retirement beckons, and you’re still with us through the ether. Happy are those who plan ahead for the day retirement comes and can slip into the new routine as seamlessly as possible for the great change it turns out to be. Good friends in similar situations and hobbies help make the transition easier.

As a dear friend several decades older than we are said when he retired, he and his wife planned ahead so that when the time came they would be as ready and organized so that the transition would not seem so strange in the beginning. And looking back they wondered how they ever had time to work because of all the things they were interested in and were now doing.

Nope, not dead yet. I’m still marveling over the Army/Navy game today. A hard fought, cleanly played, disciplined group of guys on each side of the ball. Well, I’m glad that I didn’t run for president since I’d probably be a Black Pepper Monger. We’ve had several salt pepper shakers over the years but I keep going back to the heavy glass, (looks like crystal) ones we got when we go married. They are heavy, big enough to hold an ample amount of product and have SS lids. The downside is that the pepper shaker had the Depression era lid, I.E. the damn holes were too small for anything but the smallest particles and dust to go through and I like coarse ground pepper. So, years ago, ole Dave drilled out the holes and I’m not sure how big I went but I’m guessing about a #40 drill bit size. I was originally only trying to make the point that there were two separate shows. Sesame Street to teach preschoolers their numbers and letters and The Muppet Show to entertain young and old alike.

Morning gang. I’m getting a late start this morning since I woke up for a couple of hours in the middle of the night. Darn you and those tamales – I’m thinking that I may have to call my tamale lady again, let’s just say that she is rightfully very proud of her product and charges accordingly. I may want to take a load of chili, beans, and tamales on our trip to Lufkin next week. Not sure about the weather, and it always tastes better when the weather is crappy and cold.

Right now, another bright sunny day without a cloud to be found anywhere. I’m hoping that the political events going on in the UK right now are a precursor to what we will see next fall in the US. People generally seem to have had enough of the liberal, progressive, socialist hogwash and are turning the tide back on that movement – not just UK, but US, Italy, and others. Can France and Germany be far behind? Of course, the plan for those two was to let enough muzzies over run their country that they could not be stopped, and we’ll see if that plan actually works.

OK, you all have a great rest of the day. More later as it develops.

You all can talk about those tamales and chili all you want, but I’ve got the nanner pudding monster calling me. I think I last had banana pudding was several years ago, but someone talking about those nanner pudding tacos got me interested, and it’s just been taking off from there. I’m gonna do the non-cook kind simply because I’m too lazy to do the harder one. Let’s see – pudding, milk, Eagle Brand, whip cream, sour cream, vanilla wafers, and of course nanners. Mix ’em up and cool in the refrig for several hours. Sounds easy enough for me – hardest part is peeling and slicing the nanners. oK, I’m off to the grocery store.

Hard to believe this is December 15. 81 outside at Chez Harp. Great day for some manual labor. I am sawing up a branch that came down from our water oak. It did surprisingly little damage to anything below it. I think it probably came down during a rainy day/night we had a while back, last week. Don’t even know if I was here when it happened, but I not only didn’t hear it happen, I also failed to notice it until last Wednesday night. Even though it was dark, I used my hand saw until I could tell by flashlight that thee was no weight on anything I cared about.

It was a busy week for me, so I didn’t get back out with hand tools to complete the job. Until today. Gotta wait another month to have Heavy Trash pickup for tree branches. Hope the wood will dry out and be a little lighter to carry to the curb by then.

#105 – Certainly no flirting – too may tortillas and tamales and refried beans have taken their toll on her. The pork butts have probably been in my freezer for close to a year which should make them properly aged for tamale work, and I did acquire them on sale a while back. It never hurts to have a friend in the tamale business when hard times come around though. I figure I came out about even overall on that deal.

Now as the nanner pudding, it’s cooling in the refrig as we sit here. I wound up not following the recipe exactly, but when I was done it looks right and licking the beaters it seems to taste OK. I also wound up with an extra nanner, so I figure that i will just cut it up on the first batch that comes out later, and if there is still some left, I’ll just cut it up on the rest of the bowl. I don’t know how I’m going to get rid of all this pudding – makes a lot more than I thought it would. Wonder if you can freeze that stuff?

Vacuumed and mopped the wood floors on the first floor, mulched in my crepe myrtles and washed down the driveway since it wasn’t freezing.  This is the first day in 2 weeks I’ve felt like doing anything physical since I started battling this upper respiratory infection.  I finally had to do a 7 day round of steroids to try and knock it out since my doctor and I agreed it wasn’t responding to antibiotics.  It’s some kind of mutated bacteria around here that physicians are really struggling to beat.

Weird thing happened at Mass this morning. I normally go to the 9:30 English one but decided to go to the 8:00 Latin mass. In Father Felix’s homily he mentioned some recent vandalism at the parish and that there are demonic forces at work in the world. At this point a woman went into some sort of distress and we had to call an ambulance. It was serious enough that he came down and gave her the Anointing of the Sick sacrament. She was conscious when EMTs arrived but I haven’t heard an update yet.

Tedtam, I actually thought about you after our homily this morning. It focused on keeping the church and the sacraments foremost in our hearts as we approach the Nativity of our Savior. We were called to not ask “What can brown do for you?” (Old UPS commercial reference), but to remember the real reason for the season.
