Weekend Open Comments

For years, no one believed an apparently drunk man who said he didn’t drink any alcohol.

He’d become prone to falls, displayed “brain fog and aggressive behavior” and was even arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, all while swearing he hadn’t touched a drop of booze.

His family, his doctors and police were convinced he was a closet drinker.

The truth was much stranger: the 46-year-old man’s body had begun producing its own alcohol in his gut whenever he ate carbohydrates — a rare condition known as auto-brewery syndrome.

That could save me a lot of money.

Someone just sent me the o/c article and viola, here it is as the opening feature on the couch.
I’m taking care of my 3 year old grandson again today while his mother goes to MBA school at Rice. His father and mother are in the process of the big D and I don’t mean Dallas. The father and the south side of a north bound pig with diahrea have a whole lot in common.

I don’t much care for him.

    Con’t.
The Texas Permanent School Fund provides X percent of the money to fund public schools, which is mandated by the Constitution of this State.
The Fund is substantially funded from oil/gas royalties from mineral rights retained by the State of Texas.

I haven’t researched this particular amendment yet. But if they are trying to expand the amount of available money from the earned interest on the fund (when available), I would be a supporter.
Use the money as mandated instead of having it sit around in banks or other investments.

Not less enough to keep my taxes from increasing. If this amendment gave HISD 5 billion more a year do you think our taxes would go down in a commensurate manner? Give them more money they will spend more money and students will be just as dumb. How about dedicating it to vouchers for school choice?

Didn’t this one have to do with the State of Texas’ precious metal assets?

    No.

    What would Proposition 9 do?
Proposition 9 would allow the legislature to exempt precious metal held in precious metal depositories from property taxation.[1] Approval of Proposition 9 would also enact House Bill 2859 (HB 2859), the legislation exempting precious metal held in precious metal depositories from property taxation. HB 2859 would define precious metals as a metal, “including gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium,” that “bears a high value-to-weight ratio” and “customarily is formed into bullion or specie.”[2] A precious metals depository is a facility where people can store their precious metals. The facilities often charge a fee based on the value of the stored metals and provide security and insurance.[3]

Some are worried that when Texas turns Blue, the Dems will try to Tax your stored precious metals.

Good afternoon Hamsters. Wonderful Fall day the way it should be with a morning low of 49 here and now a pleasant 62. Our ravaged pecan trees covered in those evil web worm webs are putting out new leaves, and the wind is pulling the remains of the webs off the branches. Still bunches of them to be removed, but it’s satisfying to see them dried up on the ground. And I can’t resist stomping on some of them on the driveway on the way to the mailbox.

Based on hysterical historical precent with state and local school taxes I am detecting some really big problems.

That money can only be used for public school funding. Forever. Period.

When the Hardy toll Road was proposed over thirty years ago we were promised by the politicians that as soon as the toll road was paid off the toll would be dropped.  2 years ago the politicians and the toll road authoritah declared there was no way the tolls were going away so the tolls can used to make more toll ways.  I remember reading that some proffessor calculated that Houston alone collected enough fuel taxes, car taxes and fees “specifically ear marked for roads to pave the whole 600 sq miles of Harris county times over.  Did I mention that all fees, funds and taxes collected go into a general fund?

During Rick Perry’s first couple years as gov a tax at the sports retail level was levied for the maintaining of state parks and wild life management areas.  We were promised that that tax would go for the these “vital resources” forever, period.  Yet state parks continue to decline in maintenance for lack of funding.  Did I mention that all fees, funds and taxes collected go into a general fund?

Although it has since been denied we the people were promised that fees collected form the lottery were to go to school funding and how our taxes should decrease over time.  Even if we were not promised that where does all that money go? Did I mention that all fees, funds and taxes collected go into a general fund?

Your local school taxes are a local issue.
The more money the state contributes, the less pressure on local taxes.

The money the state contributes is from local taxes.  The government can only generate revenue from taxes and fees.  That argument falls flat on its face. Did I mention that all fees, funds and taxes collected go into a general fund?

The Texas Permanent School Fund provides X percent of the money to fund public schools, which is mandated by the Constitution of this State.
The Fund is substantially funded from oil/gas royalties from mineral rights retained by the State of Texas.

Again a fee form the public largesse.  The state cannot reap any fees from what they maintain til the state leases the land for drilling rights.  Simple economics dictates that the compaies be they wild catters or giants like Exxon puchase the leases as a debit on the thri balance sheet and then those costs are passed eventiually on to the consumer.  Show me the numbers on the lock box “fund”. Did I mention that all fees, funds and taxes collected go into a general fund?

I haven’t researched this particular amendment yet. But if they are trying to expand the amount of available money from the earned interest on the fund (when available), I would be a supporter.
Use the money as mandated instead of having it sit around in banks or other investments.

    and

If there are any sacred cows still left in this State, numbers 1 & 2 are the Permanent School Fund and the Permanent University Fund.

Doubtful that even apocalypse will change that.

It belongs to the people of the state of Texas.  The only sacred cow in austion is the so called “Rainy Day Fund”.  It is the only earmarked funds that may exist on the balance sheet.  Hmmmm I wonder where the interest is on that account.  There is none.  The rainy day fund is a set aside on the balance sheet. Did I mention that all fees, funds and taxes collected go into a general fund?

That’s fine. But, at the very least, stop raising my school taxes every freaking year.

One of the funniest promises for new schools is the no new taxes promises.  Okay, the city/county builds schools with bond funding.  I would venture to guess that a very small percentage of voters have any idea how much the school is going to cost.  Nor do they consider that maybe what is being proposed is over priced.  And then there is the utilities, upkeep and wages that must be met and those fees are always ever expanding outside the scope of the original bonds to fund these modern day Taj Mahals.  Conroe had to have a referendum on bonds to fund repairing the main school’s roof that had leaked for 10 years.  Did I mention that Conroe raised taxes to make those repairs?  The repairs were made and the tax?  Well it is still being collected.

And I have one personal gripe.  I ain’t got no kids, I ain’t never put kids through school here in Texas yet I get dinged hard for the “privilege” of living here.  I want to punch anyone that tells me crap that I should be grateful for living in this great country in the world.  Well I am grateful, but I am damn tired of paying confiscatory taxes at the local level because stupid people vote.

Or give it back to property owners as a rebate on their school taxes.

Private property owners have no claim on that money.

It was property owners that funds the states ownership of leases etc.  State and local governments can only be stewards of what the people have taken form them.   What scares the crap out of me is the amount of people that think/believe the all money belongs to the government first and they allow us to keep so much of it.

    (PRESENT COMPANY EXCLUDED).

I vote no on all bond proposals, building projects, taxation schemes etc.  If the promise is made to earmark funds for a project or whatever I always vote against it.  in the long run we end up paying more than what was promised to be taken away from us initially.  State and local funds belong to the people no matter where it comes from and Did I mention that all fees, funds and taxes collected go into a general fund?

Just got back from a small road trip to Freeport. Hubby had friended some guy who belongs to a motorcycle group called the “Warriors”. They also have patches that say “Bikers for Charity” so I suppose they’re okay. I talked to one about BACA and he said he knew of the group and highly approved their mission.

I dragged my tired butt out of bed earlier than I wanted so I could meet Hubby and this group at a place in Alvin, from which place we departed to go to some little market in Freeport where the local Knights of Columbus were hosting a barbecue fundraiser in the parking for breast cancer awareness.

A guy in the Knights is the brother of the guy that Hubby had made friends with.

It was a beautiful day to get out. It’s been a long time since I’ve taken time off to get out on a pretty day and not feel guilty about the workload back home. I still have work to do, but I don’t feel quite so crushed by it. I thoroughly enjoyed the barbecue and the sunshine. Now I’m back home and doing some housework and listening to KSBJ on the radio. My point is this ;back in the LST DAYS we covered the much ballyhooed move by Rick Perry to toss all funds into a general pile to get around that very situation.  I can’t prove it because LST IS GONE, but I wrote the story on the taxes collected from sports stores to support Texas parks etc.  In fact it was that issue that brought the general fund to the forefront.  If memory serves there were a couple other front pagers that addressed related issues, and of course allowed us to lampoon Austin and Perry.

Hey it is all good.  Austin and Washington get our money, I vote against just about everything and we still pay higher school taxes every year.  I wouldn’t take that money back from Austin anyway.  It would prolly put me in a higher tax bracket and I would be paying more to the Fed.

I imagine it’s related to bad childhood memories but the smell of lantana literally makes me nauseous. Whenever I got into trouble, which was quite often, my punishment was to pull up lantana from the treeline and pull crotalaria from the pastures.

By the time I left home the two species of toxic plants were extinct from the property. They have not returned to this day. Unfortunately for my baby sister, she was left with removing prickly pears as punishment.

I can’t believe that there is any discussion about which pocket the State of Texas is carrying certain funds around in.  This is money managed by politicians, and they can make it appear and disappear at will.  There should never, ever, under any circumstance, be any fund(s) out there whose management is not overseen by the legislature.  Money paid by students at UT to go to school does not go into the general fund of the state of Texas.  Rather, that money is pooled with money from other sources, funds, legislative grants, ad infitum, to pay for the operations of UT.  If UT needs more money that it generates from these sources, it goes to the legislature.  But, fishing and hunting license sales do go into the general fund and are not managed by the people who use those funds – they have to go to the legislature for all their money.  Point is this, as was pointed out earlier, if the school is getting money from one fund, that is less money that another fund is going to have to pony up for.  Social Security used to be carried in a separate fund by the US, but since it was running a surplus, the politicians discovered they could incorporate it into their budget and show a reduction the overall deficit  without changing anything.  If I’m not mistaken, all the state supported colleges share in the wealth generated by the oil properties in the Permian Basin – obviously some a great deal more than others.

    Go Stros.

Then they found out that while they could not actually spend these surplus funds however they wanted to, they could “borrow” money from these funds to spend as they wanted. So don’t ever think a “fund” is raid proof – it’s not.

  78. El Gordo Avatar

As to public referendum(s), my default vote is always “no”  But I understand they are catching up to people like me and have one of establishing a state income tax that is written in such a manner that you must vote “yes” if you oppose a state income tax.  Check it out and don’t let yourself get fooled.  If so, it may be the first time I’ve ever voted yes on a referendum item.

#82 – Don’t forget to look at that last word “System.”  That means the money can go to schools in the UT System and the ATM System.  Those include several smaller schools around the state, but do not include the Texas Tech System, North Texas State System, Texas State System, and UH system.  They are working on another fund for these schools.

Yes, they are collectible now. Nobody makes them anymore—

If anybody has one of these rolling around in a drawer or closet, I need one.

    Why?

Because I have one from the 1930s and all it needs to get working is the spring in the bottom, and they don’t sell the others in the Dollah Stoh, or anywhere else for that matter, that I can buy for a buck three fiddy and rip the spring out of it.

    Getting old ain’t for sissys.

It fits the definition. 25-50 years old is vintage, over 50 is antique, at least on Ebay.

The problem is that sometime between 1995 and today, they appraently stopped making incandescent flashlights. I thought I could just go down to the dollar store and buy a dollar flashlight to get the dang spring out of it so I could fix up the antique I paid $15.00 for (I bought two for $30, one worked as soon as I put batteries in it). Now it looks like of I want to turn my $15 flashlight into one that I can sell for $20 because it works I have to spend $12 to get a 10 cent part—–

I was researching the Shihl site for a bigger chainsaw and stumbled across a very good article on E15 and E10, actually, Stihl of course, doesn’t recommend E10 but says it is OK to use it, just remember to not leave it in your tank for a long time. I only use ethanol free gas in all my equipment. The article from Forbes; Ten Reasons To Care That E15 Ethanol Is On The Way To Your Gas Station.
    Nothing in this article is new to me but out of all the bullet points, I liked this one the best;

    E15 Mandate Exemplifies Out-of-Control Government:

The E15 mandate, in fact the RFS in general, represents a basic government violation of American free market tenants by favoring one industry over another. As Circuit Judge Kavanaugh wrote in his dissenting opinion: “When an agency illegally regulates an entity’s competitor in a way that harms the entity-for example, by loosening regulation on the competitor-we have said that the entity has Article III standing to challenge the allegedly illegal regulation…Here, EPA’s E15 waiver loosens a prohibition on gasoline and ethanol producers and thereby harms entities such as the food group that directly compete with gasoline and ethanol producers in the upstream market for purchase of corn.”

Judge Kavanaugh went on to say: “Before the E15 mandate, petroleum producers likely could not meet the requirement set by the statutory renewable fuel mandate. Now that EPA has allowed E15 onto the market, producers likely can meet the renewable fuel mandate-but they must produce E15 in order to do so…In the real world, does the petroleum industry have a realistic choice not to use E15 and still meet the statutory renewable mandate? The answer is no, and the intervenor Growth Energy’s claim to the contrary seems rooted in fantasy.”

    By all means RTWDT!

#108. I’ve been drooling over the Stihl Farm Boss, MS 391, it is a 64 CC, 4-½ horse powerhouse with a 3/8″ chain on a 20″ bar. It seems a good choice, since it is considerably more powerful than my MS 271 and for a little less than $600 bucks a very good buy. If you click on the page, hit the Specifications tab, I can’t get it to link to that page.

#103 Sarge, my grandmother had a flashlight just like that one, except it had a convex lens to disperse the light into a wide area as opposed to a tight beam, this was for use in the house. It is the only Homart flashlight that I’ve ever seem and that is kinda’ odd, since Sears sold them.

Morning gang.  Sorry to be so late reporting in but I was busy until all hours last night monitoring the progress on the ISIS raid going on in Syria.  Looking at some of the photos and stuff it appears to have been a pretty big deal.  I also think it shows a great deal about what’s going on in American politics that the President enlisted the help (or at least notified) the Russians, the Turks, the Kurds, etc. of an operation to be carried out; but he did not notify members of Congress until after the fact – publically stating that he feared leaks that would lead to US casualties.  And he’s probably right.  Nancy could find no good in the exercise which took out the terrorist leader, which comes as no surprise.

Of all the college games played yesterday, no one lost in a more spectacular fashion than Texas Tech (link posted in my #98 above).  That should make one of those play of the decade reels one of these days.  Meanwhile, Astros are back to even now – best two out of three, with 2 of those 3 at home.  Two days ago, Gnats were 75% favorites to win it all, bet it is less than that now.  Mattress Mac laid off another $1 million bet, presumably to hedge his bet of free furniture if Astros win, so his business must be good.

OK, you folks all have a good day, and it looks like a beautiful one coming up, and get ready for some Astros baseball this evening.  BTW, who the heck is Matt Schlub or whatever?  Never heard of him (or her or whatever these days).

I am fortunate that my lovely bride loves the old farm as much as I do. She loves to get out and clean up in the woods. We usually take Sunday off and she goes to church but since she had been in Texas for two weeks and we got rained out yesterday, she got out and worked on the edges of the Horseshoe trail down to the little pond. I had to make a run to Publix’s in Enterprise and when I got back, I saw her, out back with her mule loaded up. Later, I went with her to dump the load since she is not strong enough to lift the dump bed…..And that got me to thinking, I can get a small hydraulic pump and a 18″, piston actuator and make that sucker dump without any effort.
