Warmer here this morning, 68 and a chance of scattered rain.
Mornin’ Gang -
I didn’t know that! I knew that Elk and buffalo once roamed the Appalachian mountains, but were pushed out killed off by the late 1700’s but I saw a picture over yonder, of an Elk, taken in North Carolina. Yep, the National Park Service reintroduced them in 2001.
Elk once roamed the southern Appalachian mountains and elsewhere in the eastern United States. They were eliminated from the region by over-hunting and loss of habitat. The last elk in North Carolina was believed to have been killed in the late 1700s. In Tennessee, the last elk was killed in the mid-1800s. By 1900, the population of elk in North America dropped to the point that hunting groups and other conservation organizations became concerned the species was headed for extinction.
A primary mission of the National Park Service is to preserve native plants and animals on lands it manages. In cases where native species have been eliminated from park lands, the National Park Service may choose to reintroduce them. Reintroduction of elk into Great Smoky Mountains National Park began in 2001 when 25 elk were brought from the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area along the Tennessee-Kentucky border. In 2002, the park imported another 27 animals.

With wooden spoke wheels, an incredibly nearly off the assembly line perfect body and detailed engine this is quite the survivor for being nearly 90 years old. The radiator cap “mascot” is a motometer which many may not know; in the top of the cap is a thermometer that is visible only from the driver position and that was the only engine temperature gauge. No juice brakes yet on this GMC – mechanical brakes so you’ll need to do your leg press exercise to stop this!
This was for sale on eBay in July of 2017. -

Good cold rainy morning, Hamsters. Weather wizards indicate rain will hang around until noon or so. It was 51 at 6 and is now 50, likely to slide further before it stops. Already half an inch of cold rain, and gloomy barely describes how everything looks under a very gray sky. Just slid to 49. This confirms that Fall is here.
The new neighbors across our back pasture are in the midst of having a pool installed, and a parade of trucks parked along the road in their subdivision was quite impressive outlined by their red and yellow lights. Now that we can see the entire vehicles the viewing has become more interesting. The private road is not very far from our back pasture fence, and the vehicles are large….

Morning gang. I’m off to see the ticker doc in Marble Falls. It got pretty cool out here overnight – low 40’s they tell me. Looks like snow out there, but it’s not quite cold enough. You all have a great day.

‘Twas 52 in my driveway in Glorious Copperfield at 0600 today.

I must say, this new relaxed schedule is…relaxing.
Just finishing my breakfast and coffee, not feeling rushed to be upstairs in my office.
I was in cleaning mode last night, so was straightening up the bedroom a bit when Hubby came in to talk. He was commenting on the new relaxed schedule, too. He finished up one of his last jobs yesterday, filling in a trench before the rains came and softened the dirt too much again. Working on the apartments – and there’s a lot of work to be done – doesn’t entail a lot of deadlines to be met and much, much less interference with the city. He was in tears: “We’ve worked a long time to get to this place.” He was just feeling so much relief he couldn’t help it.
God bless ‘im. He’s worked in freezing – literally freezing – water and weather, scorching heat, gotten life threatening infections, messed with other people’s sewage and bad attitudes, tangled with inspectors and idiots, employees stealing from us (one of them set a customer’s house on fire, that was fun), tried to manage constant phone calls during the day while trying to dig holes, had guns pulled on him at job sites, dealt with unmarked gas lines, non-paying customers….the constant pulling on his psyche just to keep a roof over our heads and food on our tables has been wearing on him for over 30 years.
I’ll tell ya’, the phone thing has been one of the worst. We tried answering services, but they didn’t work very well for us. Hubby prided himself on his customer service, which meant that when his customers called, they got prompt service. I let all of our customers know to call Hubby ONLY if they had a job site question and funneled all other calls to our office, but he still got a multitude of calls every day. I tried taking his calls one day because he had a job he really needed to focus on. Getting interrupted every five minutes for one day was enough. I wanted to throw the phone through the wall after just a few hours, it was infuriating. How he did it for years….
I’d say yeppers, he deserves to feel relief. He’s earned it.
-
EG – hope your ticker doc says your ticker will keep ticking for a long time.
-
And I’m hoping to hear the news on Cousin Pat’s test results today. I’m assuming she hasn’t threatened to punch any more nurses…
I believe the plans are for her to go home today, unless the docs have more tests.
-
AAARRRGGGHH! I spoke too soon. One of our last big jobs is getting all wissed up. The city has decided that some wissing permit needs to be pulled, chlorination wasn’t done (it was), some new permit has to be pulled…
…our customer is fit to be tied and the permit runner has spent the last hour trying to unravel the mess.
Almost. Not quite free.
-
The other version.
-
Yeah, the phone thing is my biggest headache. I’m supposed to be able to deal with only the technical side of things but lots of customers insist on only dealing with me. For everything. It is hard to get things done with constant interruptions and problems.

So the Astros fired an assistant GM for supposedly taunting 3 female reporters saying
i’m so glad we signed f’n Osuna.
Another thought crime or newspeak crime? The Hell?

Not even charged
Prosecutors withdrew the assault charge against Houston Astros closer Roberto Osuna as part of an agreement announced in a Toronto courthouse on Tuesday.
…
A prosecutor in the Crown Attorneys’ office said in court that the alleged victim was the mother of Osuna’s 3-year-old child and she declined to travel back to Canada to pursue the case, according to the CBC. -

Y’all hung me out there last night when I mentioned that story. Thought I was the only one not woke.

Back from successful 2.5 hr medical records trip. The freeways were hazardous at 9:30 a.m. being obscured by road-foam from high speeds in the heavy rain. Got Hubs’ disc with his CT scan from August, then headed back north to deliver it to one of his new docs. I dropped him at the patient in/out at NW Mem-H, then waited for him there. He was back almost immediately due to running into that doc in the elevator up to his office.
Headed home and I talked him into not having a fit while I ran in at Kroger to get a 20-lb bag of what I feed the raccoons. And possums. We have 2 possums coming by regularly in the evenings now. Have been too busy this week to even make a shopping list.

I just heard from Aunt Mary. Cousin Pat is waiting for a bone marrow biopsy and can’t eat anything until after. She ain’t happy.
Threatening McDonald’s and a cigarette if they don’t get busy soon. At least she’s not threatening bodily harm. Yet. Her butt’s gonna be sore after the biopsy.
Heading out to eat lunch with Hubby before going to visit at St. Lukes.
-
TT: I really like Cousin Pat and I haven’t even met her.

OK, returned from doc stop over in Marble Falls which is a follow-up from the original 3 day stint in ICU with a blood clot in my lungs back in September. Medical City Dallas sent most of the records ahead of time, so that saved a lot of rehashing and so forth. Female Indian (dot not feather) cardiologist with a name about 25 letters long introduced herself as “Dr. Y” since no one can pronounce her name. She’s been in Texas for 3 years and is already looking forward to claiming Texas citizenship – which I granted immediately based on nothing more than her appearance, her accent free mastery of the English language, and mostly my desire to get the best medical treatment possible. I’ve got some follow-up to do with hematology to try to determine the original cause of the clot, but overall, things are looking very good. No heart problems, lungs are clear, and after a few more months, I can (should be able to) drop this expensive blood thinner. Here’s a surprise – I need to lose some weight – first time I’ve ever heard that one (ha, ha, ha). The clot was hopefully an isolated incident and not the result of chronic and ongoing problems, thus once it’s gone, no more treatment will be necessary. Anyway, I’m once again pleased with the quality of healthcare available from Scott and White out here in the boonies. Seems that when the quality of life secrets such a quiet neighborhoods, luxurious lakeside housing, no traffic, and a 30 minute drive to Austin if you need to experience city type stuff leak out in the medical community, you can’t blast them out of here once they find it.
BTW, it’s high school football Friday, and that usually also means Flarada Man Friday (if I can find it somewhere) with the added bonus of another WS contest, this is shaping up as another busy day. I’m going to be pressed to find a way to watch the WS now that I’m out here in the TV desert, but I’ll figure out something to keep up with what’s going on. Time for Olde Pharts Coffee Cub now. More later.

Remove all female sports reporters (especially the sideline ones) since they’re too soft to take it.

The stray dog I brought home last year went in for an annual checkup this morning and was diagnosed with heartworms. He had to get an injection for the heartworms plus a steroid injection. In one month, we get to purchase a pill to give him at home. Thirty days after that, he goes in for another injection AND has to be held in their hospital for four DAYS of observation!
My kids better love me for agreeing to pay for this. I’ve always told them that if any of our pets get seriously sick, that I’m putting them down. I like our animals, however, I’m just not that attched to them.
I kinda like animals the way grandparents like their grandkids. You get to play around with them and at the end of the day you return them.
This business of actually taking care of them requires work… and money!

Mountain buffalo?
I’ll be. -

My daughter works at a day care in the afternoons after she goes to classes at U of H. Y’all might recall that she suffered a severe concussion three years ago. Well on Wednesday she got hit in the head with a dodge ball. We took her to a new general practitioner yesterday and my wife wasn’t impressed. The doctor basically said you need to go to the ER and get a CT scan. The last time we went through this the pediatrician and the specialists at TCH all ran through some very extensive questionnaires. This doc did none of that.
In any case we took her to get a CT scan at noon and we are waiting for the doc to call back with the results. We are fairly certain that she has a mild concussion. We are trying to get her to take it easy and give her brain a rest. This means literally doing nothing. No TV. No phone. No reading. No puzzles.

Yes, heart worm cure is a very expensive proposition.
People who don’t give the monthly preventative should be hung from a tall tree. -

Keep shopping for a good GP. Good ones can be hard to find.
And go once a year whether you need/want to or not. I don’t care how young you are, having a blood work up once a year can save your life and save money in the long run. Build that relationship.
I’m amazed that the guy blew her off to the ER. I’m pretty certain that wouldn’t have happened if she had had an ongoing relationship with him.
We are very fortunate to have our doctor. He and I graduated together from Bellville High School. He actually has an Internal Medicine specialty and is the Chief Of Staff at Bellville Hospital and was Fay’s employer for the last twelve years of her career. -

Very sorry about the disappointing ER visit. With your daughter’s previous head injury, do consider going back to TCH since she has been treated there previously.
Prayers for her uneventful recovery.
-
#27 – Being the part time self-proclaimed doctor critic, I think it’s a good thing that your GP sent her off for proper tests and diagnostics rather than just taking a look and saying something like “keep an eye on her for a couple of days” or some other such nonsense. I miss having access to those miracle worker doctors over at TMC; they are some of the finest doctors in the world with direct access to a lot of other finest in their field doctors in the world. Head injuries are not something to be trifled with, and I would just as soon be analyzed by the best. Anyway, just my $.02.
-
I don’t think I could get myself to lift my tutu for an old high school buddy but, could be just me.

I don’t have a dog, but I’m under the impression that in our climate, you have to give an outdoor dog a monthly heartworm preventative to keep them from getting this deadly parasite.

Hmmm, I guess this is what Tim was talking about yesterday…

Our former dentist (we moved) was buddies with Yellow Hair’s youngest brother. We went over to visit the in-laws and bro, dentist, and about 12-15 misc dudebros were having a “fish fry”, which apparently is a euphemism for “drinking lots of beer in the back yard near some fish”. Dentist was feeling no pain, which is fortunate since he had a broken ankle. Even if he could have felt pain, it’s an even money proposition whether he’d have cared.
Best part was when the girls showed up. When they showed up a couple three at a time, in an area with 15 or so 20-year old inebriated dudebros and a pool, it doesn’t require much imagination to figure out what was about to happen.
After they got to go swimming, a few dudebros started eyeing Yellow Hair, who was utterly unconcerned. When they made the first hint of a move in her direction, both her brothers instantly put a damper on that. If anyone was gonna toss her, it would be them.

Texmo
Prayers up for your daughter’s speedy recovery.
To lighten it up a bit, this scene came to mind.

I’m just accustomed to physicians who have privileges with nearby hospitals. In non-emergencies these physicians order their own CTs, MRIs, or other diagnostics. Thereby avoiding prohibitive ER fees. If the physician isn’t qualified to do this he should refer to a doctor who is.

The Deep State is angry, my friends. If the president can get through this it will be a miracle, and there just might be hope for the Republic.

After our chili conversation a few weeks ago I decided to make some chili from scratch after our first bona fide cold front. I chopped up about 4 lbs of chuck roast and browned with crispy bacon, garlic and onions. For my chili paste I simmered dried guajillo, chipotle, arbol, and ancho chilis in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes. Then I pureed the chilis with cumin, black pepper, and salt. I poured the paste, simmering liquid, two teaspoons of beef Better Than Bouillon, and a little more water into the meat. Ima let it simmer for about another hour but, of course, I have to taste it occasionally. It’s pretty tasty, I must say.
-
Another Oklahoma post: “After a cement truck crash in Oklahoma a local resident spent an afternoon painting the abandoned mixer to make it look like a crashed NASA capsule.”
-
A good night for chili! But Ima have a dinner salad, I think with a boiled egg chopped up to be the protein.

Just returned from visiting Cousin Pat and Aunt Mary. They’ve narrowed down the cause of her liver failure to about five broad causes. Possibly autoimmune, or this congenital blood thing she’s had for years – MPC? Maybe an infection of some kind.
They do know that there is some scarring on the connections between her gall bladder and her liver, but everything is still working.
Poor Pat, she’s got more holes in her than the Dem’s case against Trump. Today she had a bone marrow biopsy. In her room. With only a local. I’m sure there was cussing involved.
While Pat stepped out of the room for a bit, Aunt Mary and I got to talking. She’s a big time lib, loves-loves-loves-loves-loves-loves-loves the Obamas, thinks Trump is masterful evil and is making millions off of putting up dignitaries in his hotels, hates that his kids are active in politics (riding on Trump’s coattails, she said, but it was okay for Hunter Buydem). We love each other despite our political differences, and I hated that I busted out laughing when she told me that there were NO SCANDALS in the Obama administration.
“Name one,” she said defiantly. I named five off the top of my head.
When I told her that Michelle was a guy, and that Obama had called his “wife” Michael, she was aghast.
But we were still able to love and hug on each other when I left.

Game time sneaked up on me. Gnats are now 75% odds of winning WS. Wonder if the Stros had a little talk on their day off about the situation they’ve put themselves in. Anyway, Go Astros, but don’t be surprised if the Gnats are boarding the plane to Disney World on Sunday.

No cut grapes?
We havin Frito Pie, nothin fancy like Hamous, just 2 Alarm. Wife was talking to her sister who has in-laws in Ohio, said they never heard of Frito Pie. Another place to feel sorry people literally living there.

This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.604 years ago today.

I need a “Like” button installed on Sarge’s posts.
In other news, once I gave up on the Astros, they came back and started playing baseball.

Hammie made homemade
chilihot dog sauce huh? BSue enjoyed my frito pie with my home made chili. She likes it better than Wolf with no beans aka hot dog sauce.GEAUX ASTREAUXS

Lol.
-
Well, I didn’t spend all day making chili, and I didn’t have any fritoes, but I did have a couple of scrambled eggs and some cheddar cheese, with some left over Wolf Brand (Hot, No Beans) heated in a coffee cup in the microwave to pour over the top. That’s as close as I could come to having a proper cold weather dinner tonight, but you know what? – It was pretty darn good just like it was. Now to watch the Stros finish off the Gnats and spoil their Disney World plans.
-
I plan on leftover chili on my fried eggs in the morning. I may stay up to wait on it.
-
When I was younger not knowing the ways of the world yet a bunch of us were driving up to Colorado for a ski trip, we stopped somewhere in New Mexico for breakfast. They had chili and eggs on the menu so I ordered it, well I found New Mexico’s version of chili is not mine. I’m not much of a pepper guy, I looked at the waitress asking WTH this green stuff is. Thirty five years later I still get reminded of that from time to time.

Astros won 4-1. Yea

Hummm, where is everybody?
Mornin’ Gang -
Some bald dude came by in an ancient flat bed truck with artillery wheels and said ‘all aboard for breakfast at the Blessing Hotel’. From my cell phone.

Morning gang. A cool 43 degrees outside this morning, and once again the skies are crystal clear without a cloud to be seen. I need to go outside, but I’m gonna wait until it warms up a little bit. All you’all talking about chili yesterday got me to thinking about doing a batch myself. It’s college football Saturday, so I’ll be sticking pretty close to begin with. Don’t have anything really new to report on yet today, but I’m sure some football and baseball scores may prove interesting as the day goes on.
After a good day at the cardiologist yesterday, I suffered a set back upon returning home. The bills for my little 3 day vacation at Medical City Hospital in Dallas last month started showing up. Now I was a bank examiner in my previous life, and we worked with some pretty large numbers, but the numbers on these forms are astronomical. What I thought was my 16 digit account number turned out to be the balance due. Anyway, I’m still alive to gripe about it, so I got that going for me.
Meanwhile, you all have a great day. I think it might actually turn out to be a 10+day on the beauty scale. More later.
-
So the non-weatherhead reporterette on ABC13 has declared this refreshingly cool temperature as “super cold”. She warned that if you are going to Astro’s watch party to dress layered for warmth, oh and drink something warm while there. I am thinking a warmed snifter full of brandy witha fine cuban cigar may be appropriate.

Shannon can you comment on Prop #2 Constitutional Amendment? What types of projects would this money go towards?
Proposition 2
“The constitutional amendment providing for the issuance of additional general obligation bonds by the Texas Water Development Board in an amount not to exceed $200 million to provide financial assistance for the development of certain projects in economically distressed areas.”
-
What is the purpose of this prop?
Proposition 7
“The constitutional amendment allowing increased distributions to the available school fund.”
This is based on HJR 151 and would increase distributions from $300 million per year to $600 million annually to the available school fund.
It also would allow the State Board of Education, the General Land Office and other entities that manage revenue from land or other properties held in the Permanent School Fund to distribute certain revenue to the same fund.
What is “the available school fund”?
-
Finally there is this one that I am also a little unclear about it’s intent and purpose.
Proposition 9
“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to exempt from ad valorem taxation precious metal held in a precious metal depository located in this state.”
This is based on HJR 95, and the short explanation does not include the reasoning behind this, or the identification or location of the depository mentioned.
Didn’t this one have to do with the State of Texas’ precious metal assets?
