So I finally got back out into the wild and captured this caracara on a stick.

Look on the right of the pictures below and you will see a red wasp photo bombing.

Nikon D7200, SIGMA 100-600, full crop, 600mm zoom about 60ft away.

I can just imagine what the bird is thinking as she looks down at the wasp.

Chrome shortages were at their peak in late ’51 and it shows in this image with the painted headlight and parklight bezels and bumpers. The only visible chrome in this photo is the door handle – the windshield divider center is stainless.

I had a weekend job with Merrit Enterprises in Gainesville in the late 70s performing maintenance on large compressors and hydrostatic testing scuba tanks. Mr. Merritt was 84 at the time and still working. He had a 52 Power Wagon that he purchased new. I was lucky enough to get to drive that beast around. I’ve wanted one ever since.

In a New York Minute! There is one like this in the Clear Lake area, totally original, Hunter Green, wood stake bed. I see it on one of my shortcuts and talked to the guy that owns it. His grandfather bought it new in the late 40’s and this kid inherited it. All he did was clean it up and wax/polish the paint and it looks like it was just painted. I asked him if he would sell it but of course, there is no way he’d part with it.

Good morning Hamsters. The day begins at 65 while we await another cold front to bring things down to seasonal temps. It’s so nice to be cold again after a long summer.

What a debacle at the ball park last night. Happy that we did not watch it but instead watched our usual tv programs. The results given on the 10 pm news were shock enough. And now the series moves on to the Nationals’ lair.

I’ve probably told this story before but when I was a kid, we’d go on deer drives at Fort Rucker. The hunters would load up on 6X6’s and a few rear drive buses to head out to their stands. The GI Game Warden drove a Military version of a power Wagon, a ¾ Ton 4X4, with bench seats on each side of the bed. He’d usually take 6 hunters and we always tried to get on with him since he could/would go deep into the woods. I killed my first deer on one of these trips. The Power Wagon was a beast and would go anywhere, we once pulled a bus out of a ditch after he tried to turn around on one of the wide dirt roads on the base. FWIW; I lot of the roads were wide enough to land a plane on. Good times right there.

We have a customer, one of “those”, who is dragging her feet on payment. They own some kind of catering company or sumpin’. The wife requested Hubby make a second trip to their house to “wash the grass down” because she didn’t like the look of dirt in her yard. She also requested a special meter box so she could read her own meter. (Like that’s gonna happen.) We got her to pay half, and the other half after the yard washing was done. We’ve done both. She emailed that she’d have to see the yard before paying up.

She claims she’s been out of town. For two weeks. And didn’t respond to my last email requesting payment. So I emailed her yesterday to let her know that we were mailing an intent to file lien via certified mail to protect our rights to collect payment. I’ve heard that the irrigation company that referred us to her has also had some trouble getting paid.

I get an email this morning requesting a phone call.

When I’m ready, I’ll call her.

I bought a small bouquet of flowers for my cousin, but she wasn’t up for a visit last night. She’s kinda East Texas feisty, and told me about how she threatened to punch a nurse in the throat.

It seems that after one of her imaging events, she was waiting for transportation to take her back to her room. After a half hour, she could feel her blood sugar dropping and called for help. It took the hospital a while to get her back to her room and by the time she was back, her sugar was at 35. (Normal levels are 70-100, fasting). A nurse was trying to jam an IV needle in her arm and not doing it very well, digging around to find the vein. According to Aunt Mary, she was screaming at the nurse to stop, which didn’t happen. That’s when the threat happened. Instead of IV glucose, she got apple juice.

    Yep, that’s Pat.

  14. Hamous Avatar

Wash her grass??? I’ve heard some stupid requests but that’s up there in the top ten.

#1 A lady in front of me at Piccadilly’s in Northline Mall ordered a bowl of seafood gumbo. When she got to the cashier she asked her to have someone take all the seafood out. The cashier, as puzzled as me, said “But … it’s seafood gumbo!” The lady said “Yes, I know, but I don’t like fish.”

  15. Tedtam Avatar

Wash her grass??? I’ve heard some stupid requests but that’s up there in the top ten.

Yeah, I’ve got to find a tactful way of telling her she’s a PITA and stupid to boot.

  16. Hamous Avatar

If she was out of town how’d she know her grass needed washing?

  17. Tedtam Avatar

I’m assuming she made a pass through or was there during our just after the meter installation.

  18. Adee Avatar
    Adee

Good morning Hamsters. Umm, for the lady who wanted her lawn washed, there are numerous sources of water for a lawn. First is God’s rain, the best one of all. Then there’s setting out a lawn sprinkler with or without a timer that shuts itself off. And there’s hand watering standing out there holding the hose. And of course an installed sprinkler system does the watering when it’s needed without standing around watching it. The woman definitely has a problem such that offering suggestions might not compute.

    #14 Hamous
Presuming she doesn’t have two broken arms, she can pick the fish out herself from her seafood gumbo. The cashier might have suggested that she pick the fish out herself to be sure they were all removed and offer a clean dish to put the fish in.

    Dang straight.

My response to her request that I call her to answer questions:

What are your questions? As far as I know, Hubby made special trip to “wash your grass” at your request, which was a first for us. We’ve never had a customer ask for that before, but he did it. He said he got your special meter box. As far as I know, we’ve fulfilled our required work and your requests. All we need is the final payment. If you have other questions, just send them to me and I’ll answer what I can.

I don’t know what kind of questions she could have for us at this point. She has her meter. Now, STHU and send us a check.

Some guy in an old biplane has been buzzing the area and the park, in particular. The plane is very loud. He’s probably here for the bluegrass festival.

I went on my morning rounds and never gave him another thought.

I’m driving home from Bellville and I hear this noise developing and feel this vibration in the steering wheel. I thought, “Damn, that slow leak that I’ve been nursing on the right front is going flat, fast.” I started slowing down….looking for a place to stop.

Mr. Biplane had sneaked up behind me and was only maybe 150 feet above, right on top of me, following the same path – Coshatte Road. As I slowed down, he immediately came into view and then banked right.

I did my best “old man shooting the byrd and shaking my fist” at him.

    #46 from last night

Gordo, thanks for the link regarding OTA TV antennas. I forwarded that to my mom just in case they opt to put one up. My guess is the antenna wouldn’t even have to be that big and I’m sure it could be mounted directly on the house.

It definitely wouldn’t have to be up on a 50ft pole like my grandparents in Brownwood. They had a motor to rotate the antenna to choose between one grainy station in Abilene or a better one out of San Angelo. I think my grandpa was first in line when they started offering satellite TV services.

Since we live near Hobby Airport, reception gets screwy sometimes. MIL watched a lot of TV from her bed, especially those last six months or so. We got her an antenna with a motor on it so she could redirect from her bed. Slick as poop on an icy road.

Since I found out recently that my pierced ears were actually trying to close up on me (I haven’t worn earrings regularly for years), I’ve decided to start wearing them more often. I have issues with them; it took me 3 tries as a teen/young adult before I had a successful piercing without infection. My best friend in college had me come by her dorm room every day so she could clean my piercings for me. I cleaned ’em several times a day, but I just have a reaction to the metals, even gold and stainless posts. (I coat the posts of my pierced earrings with antibiotic cream before putting them on.) As a result, since I quit working in corporate offices downtown, I just haven’t worn them much. There are some pretty pierced earrings and some studs just look ugly when using a clip-on back.

I dragged out my earring collection and realized I don’t have a good place to put them where I’ll see them and can easily get at them. I found a place mat at Big Lots that is plastic and made with a multitude of holes in it. I found a metal hanger in my stash, stuck the hook at the top through one of the holes, and twist tied the sides to the shoulder part of the hanger. I’m going through all of my earrings and hanging them through the holes. When I’m all done sorting, cleaning, and hanging them, I’ll hang it on my wall. Seeing them will encourage me to wear them more often. And maybe I won’t have to personally re-pierce through a layer of skin again.

Dang, I used to wear a lot of earrings! I don’t wear high heels any more (a podiatrist told me not to so the tingling in my toes would go away), so I guess my earrings and head scarves/wraps will be my new fashion vice. I really should be dressing up a little more for mass, especially since I’m supposed to be a role model for the confirmation students, so there ya’ go.

Back when the saying was “left is right and right is wrong” on guys’ ear piercing I got my left ear pierced at the Piercing Pagoda in Northline Mall on a tequila-infused weekend (it was either that or a tattoo at Dago’s on the North Freeway). I haven’t worn an earring in a very long time so I’m pretty sure it’s closed up.

    I don’t drink tequila anymore.

Morning gang – oh wait.  Today was a travel day, and since I’ve been battling a bronchial infection, I haven’t been sleeping well as I have to get up and cough frequently.  But that seems to begetting better slowly but surely and I think it’s about run its course.  So I left Dallas about 10AM and arrived back at SS around 2PM.  Southbound on the Dallas North Tollway just 1 exit from where I stays while in Big D, a lane was closed and there were workmen all scurrying about.  It was the path the tornado took Tuesday night, and there were those 100′ lightpoles down, trees stripped of leaves and lots of branches lost, a brick privacy wall blown down, and roofless houses on both sides of the tollway.  I knew that thing was close to us, but I never believe the hype about the amount of damage, etc., but it was somewhat sobering to see the path that thing had carved out.  The winds were strong out of the south, and about Hamilton I ran into light but persistent rainfall, all preceding the cold front that is expected later today.  Anyway, got home and got all the stuff in out of the car.  Now about 3PM, the wind is shifting strong from the north, and the rain is getting pretty heavy, so the blue norther is here.  Anyway, that’s my update for the day.  Hope you all have a great one.

Another strong black candidate will split that vote, prohibiting Ratboy from avoiding a runoff. Buzbee and Boykins or Ratboy will be in the runoff. I think his $95k boytoy has eroded his black base.

  57. Hamous Avatar

As I recall, Tootsie didn’t make the runoff in her last election. Whatever happened to her?

  58. Hamous Avatar

The hot-button issues for the 1991 election became fear of street crime and skepticism about the functionality of an expensive monorail system proposed by Whitmire. Lanier promised to cancel the latter and put more police on the streets. Lanier made inroads into Whitmire’s white supporters, while a black candidate, Sylvester Turner, cut into her black support. She placed third with 20% of the vote and thus failed to make the run-off election. Lanier would go on to defeat Turner for the mayoralty.

I had forgotten it was Ratboy who pushed Tootsie out of the runoff.

I am driving Hubs down to TMC in the morning to fetch a copy of the CT scan pix he had made back in August. (That was for the aneurysm that turned out not to be as large as ultrasound had seemed to indicate.) He had a suspicious lump, bigger than a polyp, found during his colonoscopy 2 wks ago, and the surgeon who is going to remove it wants a new CT scan done, but also wants to see that older one in case it sheds any light. Maddeningly, the Aug scan was done at Methodist in TMC, and they don’t “share” data with Mem-H which is the network where we try to have everything done. Thus we have to pick a DVD up in person and give it to the Mem-H doc. Hubs says in future he will refuse any referrals to docs who are not Mem-H.
