Friday Open Comments

When Lone Star Times ceased publishing in September of 2010, I was burned out from posting six to nine posts per day for nearly a year. LST had been such a labor of love and it was hard to let it go.

Thanks to Hamous, we had this venue and I finally, after a nearly six month hiatus, posted again on the internet. The music video above was my first for Hambone.org on April 13, 2011 and today’s is my 741st post as a contributor here.

I really miss Lone Star Times, lots of interesting characters showed up and we had some very good conservations, but as someone here once said Facebook pretty much killed all the blogs and they’ll not come back. It’s amazing how fast they came and went. I like our little groups here but there is not many of us left and we’re just a bunch of old friends, that have a lot in common and mostly met each other on LST. Not enough different folks for a spirited discussion.
741 posts? How can you find out that info, do you have to be a keeper of the keys?

Thanks for the compliment, Tedtam. I disagree with Super Dave on the demise of blogs on the internet. In fact, I foresee a time when blogs regain their former dominance. The Right in this country fell for the trap of FB and Twitter – the whole social media hollow scam. The continuing assault on freedom of thought and opinion by FacebookGoogleTwitter won’t last forever. I don’t know how it will go down, but I don’t think BigTech will survive in its present monopoly form for much longer, even with our toothless antitrust department at DOJ.

And by the way, LST didn’t cease because we were losing readership. Not at all. We were doing just fine. The very real, rent-seeking threat from the Las Vegas lawyer, Steve Gibson, and his copyright trolling firm, Righthaven, was the one single reason we decided to shut it down. Thankfully, he was eventually run out of town and has been hounded by lawsuits and judgments ever since.

She went from being a feminist / pro women’s rights to hating white males to now wanting to become one and wanting to chemically and surgically mutilate her body.

It’s pretty terrifying to send your teenage daughter off to a school a thousand miles away. It was for me in 2000 and it’s a helluva lot worse today.

It led with an anecdote: “The young woman went off to college—which began, as it often does these days, with an invitation to state her name, sexual orientation and ‘pronouns.’ When her anxiety flared during her first semester, she and several of her friends decided their angst had a fashionable cause: ‘gender dysphoria.’ Within a year, the lawyer’s daughter had begun a course of testosterone. Her real drug—the one that hooked her—was the promise of a new identity. A shaved head, boys’ clothes and a new name formed the baptismal waters of a female-to-male rebirth.”

Rapid-onset gender dysphoria, which has been described as a “contagion,” has caught up with more and more mothers who are shocked when their formerly feminine daughters suddenly come from home college with mustaches, acne, different demeanors — even their breasts removed.

    This is really outrageous.

Clarification: Owen Courreges was involved very early on with Dan Patrick in creating ChronicallyBiased (?), the forerunner to Lone Star Times. Owen had nothing to do with the site once it became Lone Star Times and was owned entirely by David Benzion. Matt Bramanti had been Benzion’s right hand man in the startup and the great support from Edd Hendee made it all possible. Owen was long gone by then.

The decision to finally shut down LST was wholly made by David Benzion after a lot of hand-wringing by all of us involved. Frankly, I was the one who was ringing the alarm bells most over the potential legal mess because LST had linked many, many times to the Las Vegas Review-Journal during the Fundamentalist Later Day Saints blowup at their ranch in West Texas. We covered the subject heavily and referred to LVRJ investigative articles frequently. Gibson and Righthaven were scouring the internet and extorting thousands of dollars from website operators for linking to LVRJ pieces even though such quotes and links were legal under the Fair Use Doctrine.

I do not think blogs are dead or dying for that matter. The Twitter and Facebook behemoths in an obtuse way depend on blogs survival for their own survival. I do not think blogs as a social platform will ever go away and I do not think their popularity as far as sources of interaction has diminished as much as we think. Human ego being what it is seeks out or creates places to be recognized and social interactions requires places to gather. Many here on the couch do not care for facebook and I think the friendships in this setting are deeper. Blogs are like Cheers and Twitbook are more like Gilleys or Club 54,

What’s his name (Voldamort) that maintains Chronically Biased had a falling out with Benzion. Before Voldamort left he downloaded all the CB archives and posted them for austerity (SIC) after LST left the world of the internet. He went through and deleted all of Benzion’s posts (rewrote history) along with some of the late comers to CB such as myself. Jeremy along with some other noteworthy folks were founders of CB and were also erased.

Chronically Biased was meant to be a irreverent look at the Chronicle and morphed into whatever it became later due to D_n P_trick’s vision in pizza grease to run for office. Trust me when I tell you that D_n had designs on political office about 2-3 years ahead of his run for the Senate. We were told via his radiot show that he decided to run after a 2 bus trip to Austin where D_n encountered some irate politicians. He had been thinking about running long before that trip

Looks like the new governor might be the first Florida politician willing to tell Big Sugar to pee up a rope:

After a whirlwind day visiting both coasts to announce sweeping measures to address the state’s environmental woes, Florida’s new governor demanded water managers overseeing efforts to fix the Everglades step down on Thursday.

At an afternoon meeting in Stuart, Gov. Ron DeSantis said he wanted the nine-member board at the South Florida Water Management District to resign because he believed they failed to understand the toll endured by communities by repeated algae blooms triggered by dirty lake water released into coastal rivers.

“I just want good people who are willing to do the right thing,” he said.

Board members infuriated the new governor in November when they voted to extend a lease to sugar farmers two days after the election. News of the pending vote was posted the night before a district field meeting in Miami, with less than 12 hours notice. U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, R-Palm City, who headed up DeSantis’ environmental transition team, raced down to the meeting and urged board members to put off the vote to give the new governor time to review the matter. But they refused.

You people just don’t pay attention ! Don’t you know the internet has been dead, dead, dead for a year ?

Remember when the FCC killed net neutrality and all the swells and experts and really, really smart people told us the internet is over because nobody will be able to afford it ?

    But what, wait ?!!!

Net neutrality mania was so intense that one year ago FCC Chairman Ajit Pai had to cancel his appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show because of death threats he’d received. That was the same day the FCC published its final rule repealing “net neutrality.”

So-called experts predicted that removing this cumbersome Obama-era regulatory scheme — which granted the FCC virtually unchecked power over internet providers — would lead to the demise of the internet.

A year later, none of the horror stories came true. In fact, average internet speeds climbed by roughly a third last year. The number of homes with access to fiber internet jumped 23% last year, according to the Fiber Broadband Association.

Oh, and “net neutrality” was a nonissue in the Democratic midterm campaigns. One party official said that Dems didn’t campaign on it because: “It’s not something that people bring up in their top list of concerns.”

We are posting our river property for rent. We are also considering selling it. Trying to decide what to do…

In the posting, I made sure to mention that climate control was via four units, not central air. Not having central air seems to be a big no-no to some folks down there. Frankly, I don’t want to be in a humid place in August where all the a/c could be down. With the window units, if one dies, you don’t.

I think we’re leaning towards selling it. We won’t get what we want (but then, who does?), but it’ll be enough to move on building a commercial warehouse/shop that Hubby thinks will bring us more money with less headaches.

I also have a list of members belonging to a FB “Slumlords” page. For a while, the “for rent or sale” page became the cry room for a bunch of never-happy renters. Oh, and I’m evil. BTW – I have no heart.

(One of the criers started the “slumlord” page, from which I was promptly banned. OH5, however, was not. She pulled the member list for me.)

When I and other landlords pointed out (1) market economics, (2) the risk we take renting to folks like them (damages, skipped rent, etc.), and (3) we need to eat, too – it all fell on deaf ears.

So, I have this list of potential non-renters….heh heh heh

I was setting here thinking about the demise of LST.

While basically true that was only 1/3rd of the reason why we closed shop. A little inside baseball conversation Benzion and I had concerning money. There were only a couple of us that had the absolute keys to the kingdom. Those keys were to the hosting company “GoDaddy”. Benzion and I to my knowledge were the only folks with those keys. At the end LST was doing well as far as impressions went. We saw many many return visitors that spent comparatively large amounts of time on LST but never ever commented. One red herring that I had to argue on a regular basis was the amount of comments made on any one of the stories WAS NOT a good indicator of blog health. The strength of LST was such that it cost Benzion a fair chunk of monthly change to run. If all of the sudden Hamous.org caught fire and was receiving 20K plus daily hits the modest costs that Hamous is responsible for now would go up. For daily hits LST rivaled the Chronicle if that gives you an indication of strength. That strength came with “GoDaddy” costs.

An Aside: Not only did our writers draw readers, commenters drew in people to the blog. I have emails (Someday I may release) that were comments about particular people. It was interesting to see who the good guys were and who the bad guys were according to other readers of the blog. My discussions with many of the emailers ranged from defending contributors to ignoring calls for banning one person over another. And when someone disappeared into the afterlife of blogdom frequently caused me more headache from the email realm than the offender that got the hammer dropped on them.

I did not then and I will not now defend any of my decisions. Benzion entrusted me with a job with certain guidelines and expectations and I operated between those lines. I had only one allegiance in those days and it was to David and acting as a firewall to the writers and staff.

I said all that to say this. Benzion made a decision to conduct “begathons” to offset the GoDaddy cost. Monetizing a blog is not an easy thing to do and few are the blogs that pay the bills even with “tip jars” in conjunction with 3rd party advertising. He and I discussed what i knew would happen, there were certain people that seemed think they had some ownership or say in LST simply because the gave a chunk of change. Because of their contribution they thought they would be free to say and do things that were outside of the guidelines Benzion established. They stepped over the line and I banned them. Sure nuff next time “begathon” came around their donations were not there and that slack was not taken up. Quite the oh S*** now what moment? Benzion and I discussed the situation, we went so far as discussing the possibilities of a pay section where contributors/writers would do a weekly video round table and podcasts. I gathered software etc and was ready to roll it out. Then came Righthaven. Texpat and i both had major concerns about that debacle. once again Benzion and I got together about the podcasts, but i think his back pocket was taking a beating and he decided to pull the plug.

So now yanno the 2nd leg of the 3 legged chair of why LST closed. The third leg will be taken with me to my grave. The archives to LST are gone because my computer crashed and ate everything. Frankly i believe it was divine providence as to why those archives are gone, I feel bad to this day about it but it is what it is.

Those that were given lifetime memberships to LST, your membership has been transferred to Hamous.org.

Seen MANY good people lose their jobs through no fault of their own. And no, of course after the furlough ended there was nobody getting any back pay.

And so why is the government people being promised their back pay? Just like the law there seems to be two systems, one for them and one for us. They can file for unemployment just like the rest of us. I have been laid off and gone back to work and the only thing I got was my old work station back and a cup of coffee.

LST, one of the things I remember was comment of the week, cow. Until some started whining why theirs did not make it and it stopped.

I applied for unemployment ONCE, and boy did I go in with my head down. Got a job before the process was done, thank you Lord.

But yeah, oilfield work, numerous cut back in hours over the years and later salary cuts that never got made up for. Back pay? I don’t think so. But everybody agrees gubment employees should not be hurt so it will be.

I am not without compassion for anyone that loses their paycheck due to no fault of their own. Guppie’s other half will eventually get paid for the work she is doing and that is only right. And good on Guppie for adapting and overcoming. But no one can answer me why the dual systems? I have never been without work for more than two weeks and once I waited till I got recalled to work. But I never got a check for my time off and I have worked a couple weeks to get a delayed paycheck. Why is the government any better than we are?

I would not squawk too much except this is all to make Trump look like the ogre. Hell PoliShroomersi are as much to blame for this shut down as Trump is if not more. Seen the FUD newscast this PM? A major story about how Harvey disaster funds may be diverted to the wall. BTW did you know that there are Ike funds still unspent and on the table? That is the inefficiency of the government but I digress. The story was spawned because the Corp of Engineers was asked from where they might be able to contribute funds if Trump declares a national emergency.

We got it too damn easy in this country. I remember stories from my grandparents talking about the war effort the American people engaged in for WWII.

This shutdown is all politics so that the Dems can get over on Trump, not give him a win of any type.

WE ARE TOAST We are so screwed in this country and there is no turning back.

Dang, I was unaware of the money crunch. With the crew put together at LST, I could see, and would’ve been proud to be a part of, what could have been a major conservative voice.

    Re: Hum of air conditioners

That property has always been a PITA as far as air conditioning systems go. None of the buildings were built properly, and the unit we have is a converted barn. Planning for a proper a/c system was an afterthought, at best.

It is quite likely that the central air would go down in the heat of the summer, being clogged with some vermin debris or ant invasion, or just shorting out from water infiltration (happened) because it wasn’t set up in the right place.

Four window units is a definite preference to sweltering, especially if kids are involved.

What’s a shame is that there are probably another 100 million or so out there just like her. Not counting the girly boys and other misfits. But she does represent women well and does not hold back.

One by one, people are beginning to realize the benefits of the government shutdown
    https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2019/01/the-shutdown-as-opportunity-to-shrink-government.php

Last fall I suggested that Trump was willing to sacrifice the House to the Dems in order to get rid of a bunch of worthless eReps, starting with the truly deplorable Speaker Ryan; realizing that with control of the Senate and the WH, the Dems would not be able to effect any control over legislation or cause much mischief otherwise. But I did not anticipate this plan to agitate them further by shutting out their constituents with this shutdown. I for one am extremely proud of the President for this move. Keep it shut down until the next election, longer if possible.

It was interesting to hear the history of LST. I remember signing up even longer ago for an email that Dan Patrick and his gang at KSEV used to announce things related to property tax protests. I went to several get-togethers that Dan held. The last one I specifically remember was held at a casual restaurant/bar in the same entertainment area as the Edwards Marq’E theaters. Also remember that Dan brought a large inflatable R(h)INO and everyone was invited to sign their name on its rubber hide with a Sharpie. And finally, I remember that Edd Hendee was there and on crutches. (This was years before his private plane episode where he landed on a freeway and was injured.)

Once LST was up and going, I know I pitched into the tip jar a few times.

It’s still way less than what Senator Ted Cruz (TX) has had to put up with for years.

We have a long way to go before we catch up with the scumbags in that regard.

Late, very late to the party today. I had stumbled onto LST and avidly read it daily for some time before posting a comment. Was sad to see its demise and glad for its rebirth as Hambone. Still glad Hamous sees fit to keep it going.
