1949 GMC FC 102 1/2 ton Longbed Pickup
.
Original GMC factory product photograph.Only GMC offered a longbed half-ton pickup which was often called a “heavy half-ton” so if you hear that term, now you know where it came from.
-
2 Super Dave
There were plenty of those trucks still around when I was a kid.
-
Oh and the picture is neat, the wreck happened in Paris, I think.

Andrew McCarthy on Mueller.
This is well worth watching. It is 34.5 minutes long so watch when you can block out the time.

#3 Texpat, you still see them occasionally in barns in Alabama but the people that have them know how much they’re worth. 20 years ago, I could have picked up an old Chevy or GMC for $1K, or Ford for that matter. I love the 49-53 Chevy’s and GMC’s but the old fat-fender, Fords with the flathead 8 are really neat also.
I should mention that I’m talking about original trucks that are in fine serviceable shape. -
Richard Fernandez of Belmont Club and PJMedia fame posted this on Facebook a few hours ago about the upheaval in France…
What appears to be happening to Macron is “a preference cascade”. Something everyone knows but keeps to himself that suddenly emerges when people suddenly realize that everyone is thinking the same thing.
Outwardly the conventional wisdom: high taxes, crippling Green regulations, open borders were unassailable, seemingly universally held. But under the surface the peons were seething while the riche were oblivious because they could afford to be.
Macron, the media — nobody saw it coming. Nobody really predicts anything. Pearl Harbor, Hitler’s invasion of Russia, the fall of the USSR, 9/11, 2008, Brexit or Hillary’s loss. The really important info is not what you know but what you’ve ignored.
Smartest guy in the room.

As seen over yonder;
Kalinin K-7The most amazing airplane in History…..
Built in Russia during the 1930s, it flew 11 times before crashing and killing 15 people.
The designer, Konstantin Kalinin, wanted to build two more planes but the project was scrapped.
Later, Stalin had Kalinin executed.
Evidently, it was not good to fail on an expensive project under Stalin.
It’s got propellers on the back of the wings, too. You can count 12 engines facing front.
The size would be equivalent to the Empire State Building on its side, with cannons.
And you think the 747 was big… not only a bunch of engines but check out the cannons the thing was carrying.
In the 1930s the Russian army was obsessed by the idea of creating huge planes.
At that time they were proposed to have as many propellers as possible to help carry those huge flying fortresses into the air, jet propulsion has not been implemented yet.
Not many photos were saved from those times because of the high secrecy levels of such projects and because a lot of time has already passed. Can you imagine what it would be like sitting in this thing when those cannons go off? Looks like something out of a Jules Verne novel.
It just shows to go ya’, with enough engines/power, you can make a barn fly. 😀

TORONTO — The snow is falling lightly.
My thoughts are racing darkly.
I’m feeling something foreign, something I’ve never felt before. It takes me a moment to identify it.
I’m feeling sorry for the Clintons.
In the 27 years I’ve covered Bill and Hillary, I’ve experienced a range of emotions. They’ve dazzled me and they’ve disgusted me.
But now they’re mystifying me.
I’m looking around Scotiabank Arena, the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it’s a depressing sight. It’s two-for-the-price-of-one in half the arena. The hockey rink is half curtained off, but even with that, organizers are scrambling at the last minute to cordon off more sections behind thick black curtains, they say due to a lack of sales. I paid $177 weeks in advance. (I passed on the pricey meet-and-greet option.) On the day of the event, some unsold tickets are slashed to single digits.

Morning gang. I see where the Clintstones cancelled their local appearance due to the funeral proceedings of GHWB. That’s as good a reason as any I suppose. I still find it amazing that they continue their grifting even though they should have more money that they will ever need by now anyway. I guess they could always sell their life stories to the Foundation if they need a little more since Sharpton opened up that trail to the trough.
Pretty cool out here this morning, and looking for rain later in the week. Haven’t seen much of the deer lately – guess they are laying low for a while. In the meanwhile, you all have a great day.
-
PS – Don’t forget to tell your congresscritter to vote for AOC for Speaker. It’s time to get the wave moving. She would be better than Paul Ryan, and nothing the House does will matter anyway, so why not?
-
From over yonder:
When AOC was asked about the importance of Roe v Wade, she replies “Because that’s the only two ways Mexicans can cross the river.”
LOL
-
In the settlement, UC Berkeley agreed to the following terms set by YAF:
Pay YAF $70,000.
Rescind the unconstitutional “High-Profile Speaker Policy.”
Rescind the viewpoint-discriminatory security fee policy.
Abolish its heckler’s veto — protesters will no longer be able to shut down conservative expression.
Under these terms, UC Berkeley will no longer be allowed to place a 3 p.m. curfew on conservative events or relegate conservative speakers to remote or inconvenient lecture halls on campus while giving left-leaning speakers access to preferred parts of campus.YAF and UC Berkeley also agreed to a “fee schedule” that treats all students, student groups, and speakers equally. Unless students are handling money or serving alcohol at an event, there will not be a need for security fees.

But like many programs created with the best intentions, they generate revenue — nearly $420 million a year combined — that lawmakers depend upon when it’s time to balance the state budget.
“The DPS told us they’d lose 200 full-time positions if we got rid of it,” Huffines said. “It’s a job program for DPS. There is a built-in self interest.”
-
#27 – Like so many other government licensing and inspection programs, the fees charges are not to pay for the service but are another tax levied on the public under false pretense. If the DPS story is true, why not insist that DPS be properly funded by the legislature rather than create these phantom programs to generate revenue – that is called “corruption.” If government told us the truth about anything, we could get rid of half or more of it. And corruption runs deep in all facets of government. That’s why it is not to be trusted at any level.

There’s fake news and then there is “fake shoes”.
Payless recently had some fun at the expense of influencers.
With some help from advertising agency DCX Growth Accelerator, the discount shoe retailer filled a former Armani store with its own shoes and added an additional zero onto its regular prices.
It then invited fashion influencers to get an exclusive first look at the new brand.
What did they call it? “Palessi,” of course.
and,
Some even paid $200, $400, and even $600 for shoes that are normally sold for $19.99 to $39.99.

I recall one trip to the War Eagle craft show in Arkansas many many years ago. So long ago, that TG&Y was still around. I was fond of a line of purses they sold: they felt soft like leather and cost about $15. I was with Hubby, his parents, and some friends, and I walked with MIL among the vendors. She was specifically looking for a real leather bag. MIL always insisted on the real thing – wood, leather, etc.
We found a leather goods vendor, and he proceeded to wax poetic about the merits of real leather. And how do you determine real leather from the fake stuff? You thumbnail scratch it and it should buff out, and he demonstrated on the banana bag (because of its shape) that he was trying to sell MIL for $150.
Then he grabs my purse. “Let me show you the difference,” he says, as he drags a thumbnail on my purse, then begins to rub it with his thumb. “You can see that on fake leather the scratch…oh, this is actually pretty good leather…”
MIL and I shared looks. She knew how much my purse cost and that it was fake. That guy lost all credibility.
She still paid $150 for her bag.

The world of men’s shoes and women’s footwear are like two different planets. I buy fairly expensive boots and shoes because I can’t wear cheap shoes without being in pain. I’ve had compound fractures in both feet, have a narrow heel and high arches. I’m hard to fit.
I buy Red Wing workboots, Johnston & Murphy dress shoes, Cole Hahn loafers, Sperry topsiders, etc. I have one pair of captoe dress shoes from Johnston & Murphy I wore last weekend that I bought from Larry’s Shoes on Post Oak 18 years ago. They still look great and have only been resoled once. They cost $225, but when they last almost 2 decades, the amortized cost gets close to $10 a year. I also have a pair of $230 Red Wings that are about 20 years old and still wearable.
Her Highness buys 5 or 6 pair of shoes on sale online for 30 or 40 bucks a pair and they last a couple of years, maybe.

Good afternoon Hamsters. Busy morning here so I’m late to the party this beautiful day. Only 58 in the front yard right now, light breeze, more leaves blowing across the yard, some trees are bare and others are on the way to being bare. Live oaks as usual hang onto theirs until February, providing green scenes in the midst of winter.
Joe Philbin is now the Interim Head Coach of the Packers, formerly having been the Offensive Coordinator. He was elevated to the job right after Mike McCarthy was fired after the game on Sunday. He had several years ago been one of the Packers coaches for 9 years, then went elsewhere.
Nice to have things resolved so fast.

Cowboy boots just don’t work for me now. I’ll never forget a few years ago when I was in the saddle shop in Brenham and perused the boots. I saw these dorky looking square-toed boots and laughed, “No one is going to wear that stupid-looking toe!”
I still think they look dorky.

High school football update: The Armadillos are set to play the DeLeon whatevers for the second time this season. The time was set for traditional Friday night in nearby Brownwood; however, the weather forecasts are calling for serious rainfall starting Friday to last the weekend. So, for some reason unknown to me (perhaps the men are still in charge here or something),logic prevailed and the game has been moved up to Thursday evening. So I’ll have to reset all my internal timing and game preparation forward a day. I’ve no doubt that I can do it given that I’ll have all day tomorrow and that should suffice. But, the real problem is what am I going to do with Friday and the rest of the weekend that I normally spend replaying the game, looking at the stats, analyzing the results, studying next week’s competition, etc. That just too much time for me to have to fill, so we’ll see how it goes. Meanwhile, I guess I’ll have to start all my pre-game hype on here tomorrow rather than waiting until Thursday.

I was thinking the original Ropers were really just a newer version of the old Wellington boots (the Americanized style) our mother always loved. So I looked it up and discovered that even though they were originally made of leather, they became…
Wellington boots were at first made of leather. However, in 1852 Hiram Hutchinson met Charles Goodyear, who had just invented the sulfur vulcanisation process for natural rubber. While Goodyear decided to manufacture tyres, Hutchinson bought the patent to manufacture footwear and moved to France to establish À l’Aigle (“to the Eagle”) in 1853, to honour his home country. Today the company is simply called Aigle. In a country where 95% of the population were working on fields with wooden clogs as they had been for generations, the introduction of the wholly waterproof, Wellington-type rubber boot became an instant success: farmers would be able to come back home with clean, dry feet.
Nothing is ever really new. It’s all just recycled, reformulated ideas from the past.

I met this lady at a Republican convention. Someone hijacked her identity and has made her life hell – she’s having a hard time finding a job because the hijacker has all kinds of crimes on their record, which Tabu now shares. She’s tried to straighten it all out, but it’s difficult.
She desperately needs a job. She’s an intelligent woman, and, given her situation, has a remarkable attitude. If any of you know of any job openings, she just wants to work and pay her bills. She has an athletic agency business and has written some Christian based books, but it’s not enough.

An enlightening and useful website, that can sometimes be a bit depressing. It rates businesses on 2nd Amendment and other issues. It gets depressing when you start looking at how the places you usuallt shop rate. Rated in a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being basically supporting liberal causes, and 5 supporting Conservative ones.

But any president’s legacy consists of multiple elements, and with Bush three in particular deserve exploration. All were in the realm of foreign policy. They are: his administration’s decision to assure Russia that NATO wouldn’t expand eastward; his invasion of Panama to upend a disruptive foreign leader within the American sphere of influence; and his decision to send some 28,000 troops into Somalia, a war-crushed basket-case country in East Africa. The NATO decision was absolutely correct, and it’s a tragedy of history that it was cast aside by subsequent presidents. The Panama incursion, while perhaps debatable, can be justified on geopolitical grounds. But the move into Somalia set America upon a new azimuth of foreign policy that ultimately proved disastrous for the country and other segments of the world.
