Thanksgiving Open Comments

Things I am thankful for:

I have a loving and forgiving Lord and Savior. Especially the forgiving part. Because….me.

We live in a country that, some obvious setbacks, is still the best dang country to live in.

I have a husband who loves me.

I have family members that are loving and supportive. And friendly.

A roof over my head. It doesn’t even leak.

I have bills, but I can pay ’em.

I am not hungry. We can buy food.

Clothes. (You should be grateful for that, too. All of you. Trust me.)

A car that goes when I say go and stops when I say whoa.

Two of the best kids ever.

And grandkids, too.

I am well educated and I think, not relatively stupid.

Relatively good health.

I have supportive friends who are there when I need ’em.

I have hobbies that help me stay sane.

Not even last, and not even least: my blogger family who makes me laugh and think, and keeps me sane. Lubs y’all!

Your turn. God bless you all.

“There are two ways to live. You can live as if nothing is a miracle. You can live as if everything is a miracle.” – Albert Einstein

All of life is a miracle – and we are not truly alive unless we grasp the miracle of our being. Three times a day Jews give thanks in our prayers for “Your miracles which are with us every day.” Recognizing God’s involvement in every aspect of our lives and acknowledging His benevolence in His blessings to us adds enormous meaning to life.

It took me a long time to grasp that the word miracle does not simply refer to the splitting of the sea or the sun standing still; it has far greater meaning as the measuring tool of our lives and the awesomeness of every part of our existence which we far too much take for granted. That’s why I don’t merely believe in miracles – I live them every moment of my life. – Rabbi Benjamin Blech

I am very grateful for the fact that we could pay for all the food for 12 or so coming over – and that almost all is prepared. Paying for it was not a stretch and that is a blessing. I am grateful that the turkey bird is in the oven and the giblets are a simmering for the incredible gravy that will follow. I am grateful for my and Mrs. Bonecrushers employers who help make our life pleasant. I am grateful for the emergencies and weird stuff that pops up at the office, because I have get to deal with that and it takes the load off of everyone else. . . .plus it makes me look good.
More than anything else I am grateful to ELOHIM for keeping me alive and sustaining me and bringing me to this point in life – in spite of all the crap I have and continue to pull. I am blessed by having a wonderful wife, loving parents who are still alive and vigorous, supportive siblings (5) a plethora of nieces and nephews (over 22) plus 9 of the next generation, two great kids of my own and even a grandson. All this plus a host of friends I have been blessed with in my life.

Yes, as SuperDave likes to say: Life is real good.

I just read a post on my crochet FB group page. Wow.

A woman was diagnosed with cancer and was afraid to start any large projects because she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to finish it. Her doctor encouraged her to make an afghan (large blanket). She has now completed over 65 afghans, and gives them away to other cancer patients. While working on one project she’s planning her next one. Her chemo seems to be helping, but always looking forward to her next project, and dedicated to finishing the current one.

She thinks it’s one of the reasons she’s still here.

    Wow. Puts things into perspective.

Glenn Reynolds commented on the FGM ruling in Michigan on Tuesday:

YOU TRY FOR DECADES TO GET THE FEDERAL COURTS TO PAY ATTENTION TO ENUMERATED POWERS, AND THEY IGNORE YOU. THEN WHEN THEY FINALLY LISTEN, IT’S THIS CASE: Federal judge finds female genital mutilation law unconstitutional.

    but he adds,

I think that’s probably right. But if this stands, a lot of other criminal laws will have to go, and I have some doubts that the federal judiciary will hold to that principle.

    Law scholar Eugene Volokh adds:

The decision, handed down today, is U.S. v. Nagarwala (E.D. Mich.); note that the decision did not consider any argument that there should be a religious exemption under the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act for purely symbolic nicking or even minor excision that (some some have argued) doesn’t cause any real harm and is much less intrusive than male circumcision. The court’s decision was simply that Congress lacked the enumerated power to regulate this behavior at all, and that dealing with such behavior should be left to the states (as with other noncommercial intrastate misbehavior, for instance the violence against women discussed in U.S. v. Morrison, the case holding that parts of the Violence Against Women Act exceeded Congressional power).

I’m surely THANKFUL for all the ‘typical’ things (including Yall Hamoustonians™ )

I’m especially THANKFUL for all the young HEROs that we, in B.A.C.A., have the privilege to empower by welcoming them into our ever protective FAMILY.

And every now & then a HERO gives US back even MORE empowerment than usual…………case in point last Sunday when once again (it’s been a while) my Gracie was the chosen bike for ‘Slugger’ to take a short ride on. This young Lady was SO happy and having such a GREAT day that She didn’t ‘hold on’ at ALL to Me or to Gracie during the ride – She was darn near dancing on the passenger seat and had mastered helping with hand turn signals in only a couple of minutes.

And as always…………..Gracie’s tires “didn’t touch the ground” on the way home……………… 🙂

Well, we did Luby’s, and it was an especially nostalgic trip, due to the overwhelmingly just-plain-Texans sort of folks that we were in line with for 50 minutes. On arrival, the line was just slightly out the door, but we were soon inside and snaking back & forth in a double line until we got to the start of the serving area. There were quite a few semi-disabled people on canes and rollators. The Thanksgiving Special was the exact expected home-style holiday meal that I grew up on in West Texas. You can customize your side dishes, but I got candied yams and a squash dish. At home these days, I would probably have either made the 3-can green bean casserole, or bought a deli version of it. But the green beans were plain so I skipped ’em.

I was amused by a diorama that was set up to help divide the waiting line into the two wrapped lines. Some rustic delivery pallets were on display piled up with flour sacks, corn meal bags, and cases of half-gallon-sized cans of green beans. People in line who had small chirren with them were lifting up a kid to sit on top of the green bean stack for taking selfies.

Although we both had at least a bite of everything on our trays, we brought home enough leftovers for probably 2 more meals. But heat-and-eat, no more lines.

Thanks, I enjoyed seeing that. I had bursitis once, about 10 years ago. It was awful. Apparently caused by the strain of carrying buckets of water to hundreds of trees our HOA had planted on esplanades. We had to hand water for 2 years to get most of the plantings established enough to survive on their own. I say “we” but it was mostly me. Me and my trusty old Toyota Hilux pickup.

I was seeing an orthopedic doc about my early symptoms of knee arthritis but when I told his nurse that I wanted to talk to him about my shoulder pain, they made me a separate appointment for that. Coding for doctor visits was already too complex to handle 2 different joints on one insurance form. The shoulder bursitis was an easy diagnosis and an easy fix with a cheap drug.

    Funny comment from Ace’s place…

Love the gif – turkeys, geese, and bantam chickens are more or less rabid pit bulls with feathers. I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Indiana. When I was a kid, the old man got 5 turkey chicks ahead of Thanksgiving. One was to be given to our church, one each to his mother and his mother-in-law, one for us, and a spare for Christmas.

However, the fifth turkey imprinted on the old man. “Tom” followed the old man around, talked to him, and tried his mark best to be his best buddy. The old man, being a dairy farmer, had a less than dispassionate view of his animals. Tom followed my father around and was a spoiled pet until he died of old age 7 years later. Tom was the only turkey I’ve ever known that wasn’t a complete assh*le.

Turkey Day is over, we’re all still stuffed, and the leftovers are snoozing in the fridge.

Ch. 11 had a helpful segment on the news tonight on how long the feast’s leftovers can be safely kept in the fridge. But I didn’t hang on to watch it since everything we have left over will be consumed tomorrow.

Here’s hoping everyone sleeps peacefully tonight with no stomach upsets.

My rural friends who lived 20 miles outside Austin had all sorts of animals that lived in farm sanctuary status. They had a turkey one son had won in a raffle and that big bird had the run of the farm for years. One fall the turkey disappeared and they had looked for him but not found him. Then the other son returned to a project that had him digging a big hole on the property, but was interrupted by a rainy period. When he removed some boards and a tarp he had put over his hole, they found the turkey standing in several inches of water. The bird’s feet were somewhat damaged by standing in cold water for a number of days, but I seem to recall a vet had advised them there was no good remedy. The turkey could still walk and did live several more years with them.
