Tuesday Voting Facts Open Comments

While ordinarily I wouldn’t go to the Pioneer Woman to get voting information, she has aggregated some interesting factoids from various sources. This is obviously an older article, but still interesting:

Why do we vote on Tuesday? “In 1845, before Florida, California, and Texas were states, or slavery had been abolished, Congress needed to pick a time for Americans to vote. We were an agrarian society. We traveled by horse and buggy. Farmers needed a day to get to the county seat, a day to vote, and a day to get back, without interfering with the three days of worship. So that left Tuesday and Wednesday, but Wednesday was market day. So, Tuesday it was. In 1875 Congress extended the Tuesday date for national House elections and in 1914 for federal Senate elections.”

2. Why do we vote in November? “…the month of November fit nicely between harvest time and brutal winter weather–which can be especially bad when you’re trudging along by horse and buggy.”

3. In 1888, Massachusetts became the first state in the U.S. to adopt a secret ballot system (originally used in the Australian state of Victoria) on a statewide basis.

4. “Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment guaranteed all American women the right tp vote.”

5. The Voting Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on August 6, 1965, “is considered among the most far-reaching pieces of civil rights legislation in U.S. history.” Its purpose was to secure the rights of African Americans who still faced “various discriminatory practices” that prevented them from voting under the 15th Amendment.

6. In 1943, Georgia became the first state to lower its voting age in state and local elections from 21 to 18.

7. On July 1, 1971, the 26th amendment extended the right to vote to citizens 18 years of age and older.

8. Almost every state has a state voter registration deadline, but they are not all the same. In Texas, voters must be registered 30 days before the election.

9. In the United States, about 60% of the eligible voting population casts their votes during presidential election years, and only 40% during the midterm elections.

10. The type of election affects turnout. A 2013 study of 340 mayoral elections in 144 U.S. cities from 1996-2012 found that voter turnout averaged at 25.8% with mayors in some cities elected with single-digit turnout.

11. By 2015, the Millennial generation will account for one-third of the electorate.

12. Pew Research Center surveys indicate that 50% of Millennials describe themselves as political independents and 29% claim to not be affiliated with any religion.

13. “In 2012, 4% more young women voted than young men.”

14. Only 60%-70% of American registered voters are projected to exercise their right to vote in the November 4, 2014 U.S. Midterm Election.

15. Only the states of Maine and Vermont allow felons to vote from prison.

16. “Anyone convicted of a misdemeanor in Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, South Carolina or South Dakota may not vote while incarcerated.”

17. Based on the current allocation of electoral votes, a candidate could win the presidency with electoral majorities in only 11 states. Conversely, a candidate could win every vote in 39 states and DC and still lose the presidency.

18. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the midterm elections of 2014 are projected to be the most expensive in history–costing almost $4 billion.

19. Some 40% of voters ages 30-49 have used their cell phone to follow this year’s election campaign on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and 21% follow political figures on social media according to a new national survey by the Pew Research Center.

20. As states have failed to maintain their electronic voting machines (due to budget shortfalls), Pamela Smith, president of Verified Voting projects that nearly 70% of voters will cast ballots by hand on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.

As for #20, I don’t have a problem with that. Never fully trusted the dang machines, anyway.

It’s Tuesday and I’ve not voted yet! The first time in years that I didn’t Get R Done before voting day, but @ 5 P.M. it will not be crowded at my small polling place.

Good Election Day morning Hamsters. Front blew through last night and left 0.6″ in the gauge and a wonderful crisp 56 at 6. Overcast with hints of sun breaking through, light breeze ruffles the St. Patrick’s Day banners on the front porch. More like it for March.

Media going to be in a high hover over every snippet of news regarding our primaries today.

The Alamo fell today in 1836. Never forget. Look at your ballot today and figure out which one of those weasels would be likely to make the sacrifices our forefathers did. Try not to throw up while doing so.

The Alamo defenders provided Sam Houston time to raise his army and stage for the later battle at San Jacinto. Remember the Alamo. Remember Goliad. Also remember that the land commissioner, Geo. P. Bush, wants to rewrite the history of the Alamo to make it more inclusive or something.

They have upgraded snowfall predictions to at least 12 inches for my town and we are only 89′ above sea level. That means it will be a lot more up on top of the mountain, at 800′ elevation, where our pregnant daughter lives about 20 miles west of here. The son-in-law is in Texas this week on business so I’m trying to figure out how to get both places cleared of snow. I’m probably going to have to spend one night at that house. I just hope I can get up there in my vehicle – it’s a fairly steep climb.

    RE: Your #4 from yesterday

I read the article. I agree with most of it, but I was disappointed they glossed over the fact that China is the central pivotal player in the USA/North Korea/Japan/China conundrum. China has more leverage than anyone else. The authors portray them as an allied bystander who might get dragged into the fight.

I’m calling BS on that. The Chicoms are largely, if not totally responsible, for letting this mess reach this point.

Four months after City Hall sent out requests for proposals for engineering firms to study a downtown connection to a bullet train that would zip from Houston to Dallas, a close family friend of Mayor Sylvester Turner secured a $5,000 per month contract with bullet train company, Texas Central. The family friend even asked Turner for advice on negotiating the contract.

Don’t forget to attend your precinct meetings at your polling place at 7:00 pm tonight, after the polls close.

And get any resolutions ready. The likelihood is that your resolution will get combined with other like resolutions, or – based on my experience – will get voted in with all the other resolutions en masse at the conventions further up. Because there will be so much nitpicking discussion over the definition of “is” at the state convention that at some point a motion will be made to just accept ’em all and let’s go home.

But still, participation is important. Without participation, we have no government. And it’s a good way to make new friends, which, as y’all know, is my modus operandi.

And if the Democrat caucus is going on nearby, it’s a hoot to watch. Talk about a crazy way to run an election.

I didn’t know that!?,….But I bet GJT did. I was watching one of the guys doing the PM of the Clark Forklift and to refill the cells, he had a pump-up, spray bottle of DI water with fitting that hooked up to a tube, connected to all the cell caps in series. The nozzle had a little red spinner in a sight glass that automatically stopped when all the cells were full. What a neat idea! And would you believe that it needed 2 gallons of water?!

Speaking of sheriffs – over the weekend I was watching “Live PD”. One of the locations was Walton County, Florida. The sheriff and his bull dyke deputy pulled over a car with three of the flamingest flamers I’ve seen because the passengers weren’t wearing seat belts. They were from Alabama. All three of ’em commenced to harassing the sheriff in stereotypical fag fashion. Wouldn’t show an ID, wouldn’t give their names, why are you stopping me?, we did nothing wrong, what’s your badge number?, blah blah blah. Probably because of the cameras but he had the patience of Job. He ended up letting them go. As they drove off one of the fags told the dyke deputy, “Buh bye, hope your transition goes good!”

#27 GJT Ding, Ding, Ding,….we have a winner. The battery cable usually plugs into the forklift, (lower plug) but to charge it you unplug the battery and plug in the charger, but someone plugged the charger into the wrong plug. In fairness, the battery cover would have been closed and if you wern’t familiar with where the battery was, you might not know which plug was which. My question is “why are the plugs interchangeable”?!

I don’t know why the Dems are even holding primaries since they’ve got the big dogs out there choosing the primary winners anyway. We have no Dems running for office locally, so if you want a say in county affairs, you have to vote in the Rep primary. I’m pretty sure the Dems will not be working the graveyards and prisons very hard here at primary time – they will save that for the general this fall. So if they import a few hundred thousand for this vote, what difference will it make. They are all celebrating the fall of the Alamo and just happened upon a polling station while they were in town. And Dems could certainly care less about voter eligibility in their primary, so no big deal. Dem voting after hiliary is shown to be one of the biggest hoaxes ever played on their constituents.

I don’t believe my husband ever owned a suit. He only likes jeans and J.C. Penney’s short-sleeved cotton shirts. Before he got into computing, about 1975, he was a radio DJ. He worked for KLBJ in Austin and did a little bit of onscreen work for the sister TV station in the same building downtown. So he had a blazer type jacket for that.

Right now, he literally has 2 pairs of blue jeans. That’s so he has a pair to wear while washing the other. And maybe 4-6 shirts. They have to be solid colors. The number varies depending on how long it’s been since he accidentally put his sacred ballpoint pen in the shirt pocket without the cap on. That ink does NOT come out, except maybe with bleach on a white shirt. He used to be devoted to leather loafers, but after a bout of foot problems, he has switched permanently to rubber-soled canvas slip-ons. None of these can be described as preferences. They are mandatory. They are him.

Well, I voted, I took off a little early and stopped by the Assn building to vote and surprisingly there were 7 people there @ 4 PM, and I went right in to the 3 machines for my precinct that were empty. About the Primary designation, for some reason our normal voting place was Republican only and when I show the young girl my registration card she said; Oh, I don’t need that, do you have a drivers license? So I showed her my NASA badge since I was still wearing it but she wanted my license. It was scanned into the machine so they’d have all my info. Then when I signed the E Signature I had to acknowledge that I was voting in the “Republican Primary” and couldn’t vote in a Democratic run-off.

  57. Tedtam Avatar

I learned something new this morning from my Bible Study course:

The Passover meal which comes at the beginning of the 7 day Feast of Unleavened Bread had, as part of the meal, four cups of wine (let’s see if I can keep this all straight):
    The Cup of Salvation
    The Cup of Redemption
The Cup of Blessing (after this cup, the sacrifical lamb/kid had been eaten, and no more food followed; hymns were sung and the final cup was ritually passed around like the other cups)
The Cup of Acceptance (it was shared and the host ended the meal with the words “It is finished”).

I’ll cut out a lot of the stuff in the course, but it was at the Cup of Blessing where Jesus deviated from the normal course of the meal. It was the Cup of Blessing where he initiated what we in the Catholic Church call the Eucharist; the designating His Body and Blood in the appearance of bread and wine. He became the sacrificial lamb, in essence.

Jesus also deviated from the norm by NOT finished the Passover meal. He proclaimed after the Cup of Blessing that he would not drink wine again until He was in Heaven. Then he and the apostles left for the Mt. of Olives, where his passion began.

It was on the cross that he asked for something to drink, and said the words “It is finished” before he died. He completed the Passover celebration with His own body and blood on the cross.

Also, two Tamid lambs were sacrificed on that day (our Good Friday). The first was brought into the Temple at 9:00 a.m. – when Jesus was first brought before Pilate. The second lamb was sacrificed at noon – when Jesus was crucified. The two lambs were considered one sacrifice for the atonement of sins.

Jesus, being fully man and fully God, was also a “two in one” offering for the forgiveness of sins

Sometimes, I just get goosebumps when I see how everything fits together.

  58. El Gordo Avatar

Turned out to be a gorgeous day, and suddenly as if over night our live oaks are tinged with the yellow green of new leaves in abundance while the old ones are cast away on the winds. Our red oaks are barely showing some budding leaves, and the redbuds are putting forth with some force now, at least the ones in full sun are.

Another item on our house recovery list is set in motion: replacing drapes in the living and dining rooms. Unfortunately having them cleaned did not totally remove Brazos river silt stains, and that left them pretty much ruined. As drapes, unless for shorter windows for which the stained part could be removed. Amazingly cleaning did remove the stains from the lining, but not from the drapery fabric itself, just lightened the stains a bit. Considering that they are 38 years old, originals in our house, they look practically brand new. Perhaps they could have a second life by recovering two of the living room chairs. That idea popped into my head a few minutes ago. Will have to think on that some more.

Saw the dire forecast for the Midwest storms migrating your way and getting stronger as they come. March blizzards are always heavy, wet snow, big sticky flakes, backbreaking stuff to contend with even with a snow blower. Paralyzers of travel even short distances.

In Wisconsin it’s the typical St. Patrick’s Day or week blizzard that arrives during the annual state high-school basketball tournament in Madison. Always a mess.

Still vividly recall future spouse and I in the early 60s trudging home about 5 miles from the UW campus to the west side of Madison during one of those. The snow was piling up alarmingly fast, city buses were not running and some indeed were stuck, and by the time we made it to our homes it was almost knee deep.

    Hunker down.

Democrat turnout here in San Saba County was ___________. There were no Dems running for office in this county, so that may have suppressed turnout somewhat. What’s really scary is that apparently I actually know 10% of the Dems that live here, and neither of them are hispanic. Keep in mind that these are county totals – not 1 district, not early totals – final count.

I’ve conducted my quick after election study and have a few observations. To our credit, we (Reps) were able to deflect and fend off challenges from the wimmenz and gave up no congressional seats there. Not so much at the state level for both legislative and judicial seats – so look out there. A Rep woman is about the same as a Dem holding an elected office even though they claim differently. Shutting out the Dems from capturing any new congressional seats is important, and I really expect that while the press will make a big deal about what’s his name opposing Cruz, Cruz will cruise to another term. My own personal voting rules generally cause me to not vote with the crowd, but I did OK this time around with my only loss of any consequence being my anti-Boosh vote. Of course, I always oppose all resolutions presented regardless of what they say, and I never vote for a female candidate even if they are running unopposed. Overall, a good practice run for the fall when elections really count.

We don’t have any of those stories around here.

Ours are usually, “I had to swim five miles home from school.”
