A Day of Thanksgiving

May You All Have a Beautiful and Bountiful Day of Thanks with Your Families and Friends

first-thanksgiving

What resulted is recorded in the journal of Governor William Bradford, the head of the colony. The colonists collectively cleared and worked land, but they brought forth neither the bountiful harvest they hoped for, nor did it create a spirit of shared and cheerful brotherhood.
The less industrious members of the colony came late to their work in the fields, and were slow and easy in their labors. Knowing that they and their families were to receive an equal share of whatever the group produced, they saw little reason to be more diligent their efforts. The harder working among the colonists became resentful that their efforts would be redistributed to the more malingering members of the colony. Soon they, too, were coming late to work and were less energetic in the fields.

And so went the nearly disastrous mission of Pilgrims in the New World,
Governor Bradford again…

And so assigned to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number for that end . . .This had a very good success; for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any means the Governor or any other could use, and saved him a great deal of trouble, and gave far better content. The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little-ones with them to set corn, which before would alledge weakness, and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression.

    1 & 2 above say it perfectly 🙂
Good Thanksgiving morning Hamsters. Sunshine will favor us today along with cool temps. Ground mist gathers softly on the moors of the Brazos, and the pastures will sparkle in glory once sunshine dominates the heavens as it draws the moisture into the place that clouds are made. Nothing wasted in Nature’s design. Thank you, Lord.

A really first-rate article on the Left’s war on science by John Tierney.

My liberal friends sometimes ask me why I don’t devote more of my science journalism to the sins of the Right. It’s fine to expose pseudoscience on the left, they say, but why aren’t you an equal-opportunity debunker? Why not write about conservatives’ threat to science?
My friends don’t like my answer: because there isn’t much to write about. Conservatives just don’t have that much impact on science. I know that sounds strange to Democrats who decry Republican creationists and call themselves the “party of science.” But I’ve done my homework. I’ve read the Left’s indictments, including Chris Mooney’s bestseller, The Republican War on Science. I finished it with the same question about this war that I had at the outset: Where are the casualties?

I put my sweet taters in the oven at 7 AM so they’ll be cool by the time I make my Candid Sweet Taters. I cooked the yellow squash and the giblets a couple of days ago and the turkey is resting comfortably in the garage fridge, later I’ll get him out and Shoot em up, then give him a massage in P-Nut Oil before I rub him down with Tony Chachere’s Cajun Seasoning. 😉

In the closest race for president in Michigan’s history, Republican Donald Trump is hanging on to a 10,704 vote win over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
The Michigan Secretary of State posted results Wednesday that were submitted by the state’s 83 county clerks on Tuesday after the votes were reviewed and certified by each county.
Before that compiled count, Trump held a 13,107 lead over Clinton. But after each county certified its results, the lead shrunk to 10,704, with the biggest chunk coming from Wayne County, which showed that Clinton had gotten 565 more votes than originally tallied by the county.

    From #7 link

He’ll likely react poorly, and if he becomes really annoying, build a wall between you and him with mashed potatoes and demand he pay for it.

Heh. Ain’t nothing better than watching a proglibdyte getting bent at a Thanksgiving dinner debate. Been there. It’s fun to watch their faces turn the same shade as the cranberries.
They’ll most likely go off on some tirade about how pumpkin pie represents racism and oppression because the Pilgrims invented it and the election wasn’t fair because The HillyBeast won the popular vote to which I’d say, Trump won 30 states. What’s your point.?
Hopefully by then they’d storm off dragging their tattooed, safety pin through the nose, sexual partner of choice with them which in turn leaves more pumpkin and pecan pie for me.
    Enjoy folks.

Having a serene day at Chez Harp. No annoying relatives, no millenials, just Maw and Paw and 5 cats. Microwave and dishwasher awaiting their special roles in today’s feast. Heh, maybe I should take a pic of my Thanksgiving plate and post it Over Yonder. If you didn’t know I got it all at the Randall’s deli, you would think it looks an awful lot like the meals that many people have made from scratch today.
Enjoy your feast, whatever the route by which it arrives on your plate!

Did not go out for Thanksgiving dinner this year but instead brought it in. Just the right portions so there are no leftovers except 2/3 of a small pumpkin pie that will rest in the fridge for a day or two before it’s history. Spouse decanted a bottle of white wine we brought back from a Wisconsin winery near Madison several years ago and forgot about in the wine rack. It is very good and worth ordering more.
At long last I exhumed the fine china, crystal, and sterling from the depths of the buffet in the dining room. These had not been used in almost a couple of decades after both my parents and spouse’s parents were gone. I had forgotten how substantial Waterford crystal is compared to thinner ordinary wine glasses, even other brands of crystal glasses. The Irish are very good at making gorgeous strong crystal.
Mariposa checked out what was for dinner and decided nothing appealed to her so she went off to nap. Good idea.

The turkey was so tender that just a gentle pull took off the wings and drumsticks. Another pull and the thighs were off and sliced. The breaststroke were removed then sliced, all to soak in the cooked juices for a bit until the sides were ready. No dry meat, including the breasts. Full bellies for 14 plus lots of leftovers.

We had a real nice Thanksgiving, Daughter and her Hubby couldn’t make it since they’ve moved to Midland but My Boy, his Bride and my new Granddaughter showed up and we had Fried Turkey, Dressing, Smashed Taters, Giblet Gravy, Fried Squash, Butter Beans, Turnips N Mustard Greens, Green Bean Casserole, Candid Sweet Taters, Rolls and Whole Cranberries. Emily brought the Casserole and Smashed Taters. They also brought a Cheese Cake from the Cheese Cake Factory. Yup, Life is Good!

#26 Adee, Daughter and Hubby are stuck in an apartment since they’ve moved to Midland and she went to the local HEB and got a pie that was half P-Can and half Pumpkin. They went out for Thanksgiving today but made me promise that I’d be at their new house next year…. Oh and they’re having a problem that almost never happens here, it’s been too cold to pour the foundation on their new house.

Good morning Hamsters. It’s the day after the turkey feast, leftovers jam the fridge, and creative ideas for using them are welcome just about everywhere. Outside it’s 60, mostly overcast though a crescent moon peeked through, and rain is in the forecast for Black Friday. Light sprinkles here so far made taking the umbrella along to the barn to feed the girls necessary.
We’re thinking that sticking pretty much close to home today is a good idea as is patronizing sane places like the grocery store and maybe the hardware store and plant nursery. Anyway the fall decorations need to come down and the Christmas ones started taking their place inside and out.
    Be careful out there. 🙂
