This is cool, the Only One BMW 507 Boat.
With my boating experience, I’d say that it might hit 40 MPH, but that would be it. The 193 CID OHV Aluminum engine only makes 150 HP, and with a straight inboard, that’s not a lot of power. That said, the aluminum block and the fact that the boat is made of wood, makes it pretty light weight. -
First time I ever heard Hammy mention his wife.

For just 100 lbs of unobtanium this could eventually be yours.

Love that guy. -
Shannon – many, many years ago I heard him tell a story about going through a divorce. Part of the settlement was that the royalties from his next single go to his ex. He had a throwaway song that he didn’t want to put on an album so he released that as his next single. The song was the obnoxious “Swingin’” which went on to be his best-selling single, making her even richer.

We continue to enjoy cooler weather and even showers here in Centex this Autumn. I mowed the lawn between showers Wednesday and it’s already grown back in just a couple of days. Hopefully it will fill in all the holes and ditches that I dug when I thought I needed to restore the old irrigation system. I’m planting more grass seed with the hope that it will come up and get established enough to make it through the winter. Farmers Almanac says it will be a cold one due to Algore’s visit to Texas earlier this month (known as the “Gore effect). OK, off to slog around in the mud.
PS – I’m a little concerned about Sarge this morning. It looked like he might have gotten off sampling a little too much from his moonshine still last night judging by the late posts. -
Hey don’t be beating up on Swingin

John Scott Sherrill wrote “Wild & Blue”. Here’s another one of his songs sung by Peter Wolf and Jagger.

Since the music from last night was so appreciated, here’s a bit more in that vein.

He also wrote one of the greatest love songs ever.

Good morning Hamsters. Enjoyed a delightful 73 early on until it warmed up as morning progressed. We’re becoming partly sunny and have a nice breeze, and the only storm in the county is brewing in the NW corner so Fulshear and Katy are likely to get it.
It would appear that Ryan Lochte has painted himself into a corner by disgracing himself and his three cohorts with that ridiculous story of burglary after they trashed the gas station restroom. Never mind embarrassing his fellow American Olympic athletes. Never mind scaring is Mom with that cocked gun to the forehead bit. At age 32 he’s old enough to know better, drunk or sober. No sympathy here. -
I’ve followed RCP’s electoral map in the last four presidential elections. In none of the previous three has one candidate had enough electoral votes to win before Labor Day, even without the toss-up states. Clinton now has 272.
-
And I don’t ever remember Georgia and Missouri being toss-up states, or Texas and Utah being “leans Republican”.
-
I went out to pull weeds but the humidity got me after a mere 2 buckets worth: 5 gal paint bucket with handle. It’s all bend-over — guess you call that “stoop labor” — so even my sweat band couldn’t keep my eyes from being inundated with salty water. I have a type of dry eye condition, but sweat is not the preferred treatment.
At least, due to the 4.3″ total rain I logged this week, the weeds were very easy to pull up by their muddy roots. -
Well I cut the grass in the sauna that was the climate yesterday afternoon, it twernt that hot but hte humidity made up for it. We just got a brief rain so everything is groovy. There was only one soft and soggy spot in the yard so the ruts were minimized.

Texas is pink?? For shame, for shame. -
Thought I heard some distant thunder, so I pulled up the weather radar. A bunch of small red storms have popped up all over Harris County. Here we go again…

Its because Trump sucks as a Candidate.
Nah, that can’t be. He got the largest number of votes in the history of the universe during the primary, dontcha know?

I think Trump needs one a them Luap Nor Moneybombs.
-
Besides, the polls are wrong. Just count how many Hillary supporters are on your FB, there ain’t any out there!
-
There seem to be lots of fundraisers pitching donate to Trump bombarding us with emails. Some of them even say donate to Trump/Pence. Unless one happens to recognize the names of these outfits and reads carefully to make sure the PAC names aren’t plays on genuine PAC names, keep the delete button hopping.

As my dear departed dad used to say…
Polls are for sheep who like to be told when to bleat.
Didn’t the polls say the Dizzy one was supposed to lose big to Lurch Kerry and even the exit polls said the same?
Trump Two Zero One Six -
I understand. Polls are only accurate when your guy is winning.
-
On the RCP electoral map, my point was that the last three elections didn’t have any candidate at 270 going into election day. The races were close and the candidate that had the most electoral votes on the map ended up winning. This year, one candidate already has 272. And it’s August. So essentially Trump is at the mercy of anti-American Julian Assange or Hillary having a grand mal seizure on camera to have any hope of winning.
This is the state of American politics. -
I don’t trust polls even when they show my horse in the lead.
-
I agree with you on any individual poll and even more so on “exit polls”. RCP has a pretty good track record with poll averages, which is what they use for their electoral map.
-
The Senate map sucks, too.

Nothing will beat the look of the Propagandist Streamed Media’s collective faces if Trump does win.
I bet they’d all have to be put on suicide watch.
I can just see them all taking the elevator to the rooftops of their 70 story buildings, standing on the ledge and me on the ground yelling…. -
IF Trump should “win” you can bet there is going to be a lawyer at every precinct in America challenging the validity of the votes. You think hanging chads was bad.
It is going to be a circus. If Hillary wins it will be just another ho-hum day in American politics. -
We may very well end up with a president named Kaine if Hillary becomes incapacitated.

Well, I was going to laze about in bed, get up late after recovering some of my sleep deficit, then go see Mom since my back was doing better.
Then I got a phone call from Hubby. One of our tenants reported that police were at one of our units a few nights ago. It seems shots were fired.
I’ve been looking for a good reason to evict her. She’s been on my list for a while now. Hubby and I went over there and found that they had changed the locks, which is against the lease. We also found out that the guy we told her to kick out before has been back. I guess we found enough reasons to make her find a new home.
I’ve been creating the notices and met Hubby at the unit. He cut off the illegal locks and we noted the bullet hole in the side of the building. We posted the eviction notice and took pictures. I’m waiting now for the phone call, because we had to put one of our locks on the door and they won’t be able to get in…because they have barricaded the back door.
Yep, some bad joujou going on over there.
Our downstairs tenant has a relative who wants the upstairs unit, and who is flexible on move-in dates. That’s a win-win for everyone. -
I am hoping the Snoop Dog concert in the Woodlands can make me some money tonight. I just don’t want to have to say, ” no ‘smoking spliffs’ in the car” when I get a pickup. 🙂
Take care you all. -

Can’t tou kick her out for violating the lease agreement?
-
Does the lease contain a “no riff-raff” clause?
-
Can’t tou kick her out for violating the lease agreement?
That’s the reason for kicking her out now. I can’t prove that she was the cause of the shooting; I don’t have the police report and there’s no telling what lies he/she told the cops.
But now, I’ve got her. -
The search for Bigfoot proceeds. 🙂
Uto-Aztecan (UA) is a language family of some 30 related languages on the west coast of Mexico and in the United States Southwest, and several dialects of Nahua (Aztec) dialects related to Classical Nahuatl. Let me give some background to UA. Edward Sapir first established UA as a language family with a couple of articles written in 1913 and 1915, almost exactly 100 years ago. About a half century later, Voegelin, Voegelin and Hale (1962) produced 171 cognate sets for UA. A cognate set is a group of related words in the related languages, which set of words are all descended from the same ancient word. Five years later Wick Miller (1967), my linguistics professor at U of U, published Uto-Aztecan Cognate Sets with 514 cognate sets. Miller and others continued working on comparative UA until his death which yielded a computer file of 1100 some cognate sets by 1988. Kenneth Hill and all of us Uto-Aztecanists continued adding sets until Kenneth Hill’s collection in 2006 contained over 1200 sets. In 2011, I published Uto-Aztecan Comparative Vocabulary, containing 2700 sets. The UA specialists were all very happy about it, and it received a good review in the International Journal of American Linguistics. Then in 2015, I produced Exploring the Explanatory Power of Semitic and Egyptian in Uto-Aztecan, which demonstrated with over 1500 cognate matches that UA descends from whatever else plus a substantial Semitic-Egyptian infusion of some kind. The reception of this later 2015 work was not nearly as enthusiastic as the earlier 2011 work.
Most American language families were established with an article demonstrating 50 to 200 cognate sets. So 1500 similarities is very substantial. I sent a copy to the other top dozen Uto-Aztecanists, all PhDs in linguistics who specialize in UA. There are only 6 or 7 of us who do comparative research on the whole language family; the other 40 or 50 work on one UA language or on a branch of UA. So I sent the Semitic-Egyptian-UA tie to a dozen linguists: 4 responded favorably, it looks good, everything in place to be a decent case; the other 8 remain silent, but none have refuted it with specifics. So it has passed some good early tests. All the BYU linguists and Hebrew/Semitic professors were skeptical when first hearing of it, as they should be, but all who have looked at it also now view it favorably, as far as I’ve heard. -
His talent came gushing forth at an early age, at 10 he got to play with Flatt and Scruggs.

Just got a call from tenant:
“We got word that the cops were at your unit. Why weren’t we notified that this had happened?”
No real good answer. “Somebody just kicked in our door.”
“Why the hell was somebody kicking in your door?”
“They just kicked it in. They took (listed stuff).”
“Why the hell was somebody kicking in your door?”
I should have asked why somebody was shooting at her. Or her boyfriend.
“You put a different lock on the door. That violated your lease agreement.”
“Well, when they kicked in the door, I felt I needed to put a lock on it.”
“I understand that. Why weren’t we called?”
More crap about “it just happened”. Two nights ago.
“Well, I don’t feel safe there anymore.”
“Then I guess you won’t have a problem moving then. Go get a new padlock for the door and call me to meet you to let you in so you can get your stuff.”
/pause
(I don’t think she expected that response.)
“Okay.”
/hang up
I’ll be so glad to have her gone. -

The ugly stuff is moving toward us as well and has made some significant progress since the weather on the 6 pm news. It will get here before the projected 1 am for sure. There’s a large flash flood box behind it toward Austin. This is an omen I fear.

I’m outside The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion where Snoop Dog’s “rapping” things up. It’s an outdoor venue and the crowd’s making some “[mofo noise]” with their “[mofo] hands together”.
Whoohoo.
The concert should end in about 7 minutes. We’ll see how this affects demand for rides. Hopefully for me a lot. -

Bye bye tenet.
She called me and I told her to go get a new padlock. She called me back and our handyman met me at the unit. Her boyfriend was with her. During our conversation I asked point blank “Are YOU living here?” He said not, but then why was his scooter in the back yard, when they were also out in his car? Handyman is friend of our back tenant. I took a moment, with handyman while he was looking for something we needed in his vehicle, and said, “Why do I feel like I’m being fed a bunch of bull***t?” Handyman told me that boyfriend was lying, because his car was parked in the driveway all the time. They told me a story about how she got robbed after getting out of her car, walking up the sidewalk to the door.
Okay, she got robbed in front of the unit, so the bad guy kicked her door in? And then after he had her purse, he put a bullet hole in our wall? And if she had to add the padlock to the front door because the kick-in damaged the existing deadbolt, why then did she feel the need to ask us for a dead bolt lock to be installed tonight (because we had to cut off the one they put on, for which we had no key)?
Ummmm, yeh-ah, that makes sense. She was upset, but I’m not feeling terribly sorry for her. -

I got snother call just before I was able to use the restroom. It was a group of four which I took from the Woodlands to Velvet Taco in Downtown. Good fare. One in rhe group just returned from Rio as a gymnastics competitor but was not able to actually compete. She plans to be in Tokyo in four years. The best of luck to her!
My next call took me to Main Street at a lace called The Commoners. From that same place I took sister-in-laws (one was married to the other’s brother) to Katy.
Three rides tonight but I did pretty good farewise. Although I can make goid money on Saturdays until 3 AM, I usually plan on I usually plan to be home by midnight so
I won’t be exhausted for church in thr morning. Tonight I didn’t get offline until 1 AM while I was in Katy. I made a quick Walmart stop on the way home and just got in.
Good night all. -
Just saw this and had to share. Rod Dreher is a writer and Louisana flood survivor. He had a conversation with someone who assists in helping those displaced from the floods. As per it being established the utter lack of Black Lives Matter assisting the victims, this person is much more along the line of “all lives matter”.
Later, before he left for the day, Brent came over to the Genius Bar to talk. Turns out his family is now hosting their second displaced flood victim family. “We’re pretty much at capacity now,” he said.
I asked him what made him go out to the shelter on Sunday to work.
“Well, I’m part of the LDS Church, and that’s what we do,” he said. “Some of us guys from the church figured we needed to be there.”
Mormons. I should have known. That is what they do.
“You’re going to laugh at this,” I said, “but a couple of weeks ago, the editor of my book and I were talking about this thing I’m working on, which I call the Benedict Option, and we agreed that the LDS folks are in so many ways a great example of what I think all Christians should be doing. I ended up working with LDS headquarters, and they put me in touch with a Mormon theologian who gave me some great background on why y’all do what you do regarding community. And here you are, a Mormon, a perfect example of what I’m talking about. Unbelievable. I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to put you in the book. People need to know this.”
He shook his head and smiled. “Yeah, that’s fine with me. It’s no coincidence that we met.”
“No, it’s not,” I said.http://www.ldsliving.com/What-One-Louisiana-Flood-Survivor-Had-to-Say-About-Mormons/s/82903

To quote Brother Dave, wake up slackers. No rain out here in Centex, and the yard needs mowing again already. Amazing what a little precip can to to transform the near desert into a tropical paradise. It seems that I’ve got two sets of twin fawns; I was thinking that they looked like they were changing size every time I saw them. Yesterday I saw them all at once – looks like one set was born about a month before the second set. They are all idiots though, but their mama does will straighten them out I’m sure. After mowing today, I’m adding an additional row of 3 shrub sprinkler risers to the irrigation system to get to another dry spot. With the ground all moist for a change, now is the time to dig ditches as it will turn to the texture of asphalt again once it dries out. Full day ahead, so time to get cracking.
-
Good morning Hamsters. Despite the fierce stuff on the radar last night around 11, we missed getting any rain. Currently it’s 77 with no breeze at all, and radar shows more stuff that likely will come our way this morning.
We have three momma deer with three fawns that visit our pastures regularly in the morning and near sundown. The babies still have their spots but have graduated to juvenile status and are more independent. The moms let them go farther away now but still keep an eye on them. We don’t know where their shelter is now, as the thick undergrowth in the wooded part of the front lot in our subdivision has been cleaned out for a couple of months. -
Send some of that sunny sky my way.
I need to do some exploratory surgery on my mower to determine if I need to replace it and I don’t have any place to do it out of the weather.

There’s a line of rain from College Station to Port O’Conner that looks like it’s going train right over us all day long.

Fabulous post. We of “a certain vintage” who learned math the old fashioned way in the 50s and 60s continue to astound young folks by being able to do calculations in our heads. We still know addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division thanks to flash cards, memorization, and working tons of problems in grade school. If disuse because of calculators gets us a bit rusty, practice brings it all back in a flash. It’s buried deep in the memory vault and needs only slight prompting. 🙂
One commenter on the article mentioned that math is a language. That is absolutely correct. So is music. They are coequal with written and spoken languages. Each requires different wiring in the brain so talent in one does not automatically grant immediate understanding or expertise in another. We have the greatest practice in communication via words of course, but that alone does not create mastery of words. Interest and aptitude are fertile soils for any of these languages to flourish.
Speculation has been made off and on over the years that music and math might be more related to each other than either is to the language of words. Perhaps that would depend on the areas of the brain in which they reside. Now there’s a doctoral thesis project. -

Light rain here for about 45 minutes thus far, and the heavy stuff has gone elsewhere for the time being. Watching the last gasp of the Olympics this afternoon.
-
My morning is dragging. I had an email statement from my Medicare-backup insurance asking me to send them the Medicare summary for an item that Blue Cross had declined to pay anything toward. Spent an hour looking at Medicare records online, and it appears the lab that does my annual checkup work never billed MC for it this spring. All the other players (my doc, mammography, bone density, etc) did their billing correctly. Now I’ll have to call the lab on Monday and see if it can be straightened out.
But I can rejoice that I am NOT a landlord!

The Olympic contests are over with the finish of the gold medal round of men’s basketball. The USA won over Serbia by 30 points or so. Spain got the bronze medal. The medal ceremony took quite a while since the podium was jam packed with all three basketball teams pretty much shoulder to shoulder.
All went well until distribution of the memento symbolic of the Rio Olympics following awarding of the gold medals. The gentleman awarding them dropped one and it broke on the floor; he briefly stared at the pieces and then went on down the line distributing the rest.
Thus the last US player didn’t get one before the flags were raised and our anthem played. The player took it all with good grace. I trust someone gave him one before they left the scene.
I had been wondering since the games began what might happen if one of those got dropped since they looked to be ceramic. Found out and so did the immediate world. -

#110 #111 #113, AMEN! I did buy a bearing press from Harbor Fright back when I was rebuilding that DAYAAM Kawasaki 100 dirt bike every other week! I needed it to press the gear case back together, IE the whole damn engine!
That said; Just let me say that it was an incredible machine, the first time I rode it, I popped wheelie in second gear without trying, it seems that I’m a little too heavy to be riding it and my CG was over the rear tire. I have rebuilt about 10 automobile engines, mostly Chevy small blocks back in my younger days and I had certain tolerances to stick to with BUTT, that little Jap Bike had unbelievably close tolerances! The first time I ground down the piston compression ring to .05 thousandth’s of an inch gap, the damn thing seized up after about ten minutes! I will say that I can rebuild the top end in about 20 minutes, but I’ll NEVER do that again,……not for a million dollars!
