    So.
Lets say you’re driving down the Interstate late at night. Not many cars, not much traffic. You pass a guy on the left (or he passes you on the right) and you look over and see this going on with the passenger.
How long does it take for you to call 911 and report a kidnapping in progress?

Oh, BTW – I heard on the Olympics that the Chinese gymnasts did so well in their last Olympics that the coaches got bonuses.
This year, the government is asking for that money back.
I was amazed at how poorly their team performed. One of them actually fell after a tumbling run, and landed outside of the white performance area. I would call that a MAJOR deduction.

Distant thunder rolls around now, and the source is getting closer. Radar shows we are in the path of some productive clouds, though the sun rather weakly peeks out from under the edge of the cloudbank. Wind is picking up so something is afoot.

Getting a little woolly at Chez Harp: wild wind and fitful hard rain. We had finished the nightly bird feeding session, and had enough time for a visit from a special little genius squirrel, before it got too weathery.
For unknown reasons, we had not seen the special squirrel for perhaps a month. He arrives, runs across the deck to the back windows of the family room, reacts to getting a wave — usually from me — by sitting upright and clasping his front paws in a pretty good semblance of a begging gesture. Either one of us can then go out the back door with some peanuts in the shell or a cupful of wildlife corn mix, and this squirrel jumps down from the foot-high deck and runs to the food being offered. Hubs will hold out a peanut shell to be taken from his fingers, but I just put the food on the patio. We like our li’l begging squirrel.

    High Tech Robber Barons
    Joel Kotkin at his best…

And as their fortunes have ballooned, so has their hubris. They see themselves as somehow better than the scum of Wall Street or the trolls in Houston or Detroit. It’s their intelligence, not just their money, that makes them the proper global rulers. In their contempt for the less cognitively gifted, they are waging what The Atlantic recently called “a war on stupid people.”

    and,

This is largely not the case today. As numerous scholars including Robert Gordon have pointed out, the new social-media based technologies have had little positive impact on economic productivity, now growing at far lower rates than during past industrial booms, including the 1990s internet revolution.
Much of the problem, notes MIT Technology Review editor David Rotman, is that most information investment no longer serves primarily the basic industries that still drive most of the economy, providing a wide array of jobs for middle- and working-class Americans. This slowdown in productivity, notes Chad Syverson, an economist at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, has decreased gross domestic product by $2.7 trillion in 2015—about $8,400 for every American. “If you think Silicon Valley is going to fuel growing prosperity, you are likely to be disappointed,” suggests Rotman.

    and,

There is a rising tide of concern, including from such progressive icons as former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, about the extraordinary market, political, and culture power of the tech oligarchy. But so far, the oligarchs have played a brilliant double game. They have bought off the progressives with contributions and by endorsing their social liberal and environmental agenda. As for the establishment right, they are too accustomed to genuflecting at mammon to push back against anyone with a 10-digit net worth. This has left much of the opposition at the extremes of right and left, greatly weakening it.

Good morning Hamsters. Got a whole tenth of an inch last night, but now we have a steady light rain and some ominous stuff not all that far north of us. We could do with steady and light rain all day, though the general radar picture doesn’t seem likely to produce something like that since flash flood boxes appear now and then here and there.
#34 Texpat’s Kotkin piece is most thought-provoking and insightful. The hint that the grassroots, or great unwashed, might already be on to the techno-oligarchs self-glorification and the disastrous results for the rest of us is spot on. But the unrest is more mainstream than even he speculates, not just the “far right or far left” convenient labels. Umm, it has been since Tax Day 2009, just much more focused on the perps whose stealth is more and more exposed by their hubris, be they techies or Marxist-nursed politicos.

I got an email from a former co-worker, 8 years younger than me, who retired after I did and was almost immediately back on contracts. We saw each other on the job (as contractors) maybe once or twice a year after that. Now he’s reporting he expects this year to be the end, unless or until O&G has a major rebound. He says Schlumberger has laid off 40,000 employees worldwide.
I didn’t realize it was that bad, as a few of my even younger former co-workers are still plugging away in the Houston area.

Turned on the “Rio Olympics”. Funny how they no longer call it just “Olympics” with the 5 rings. Nope it is the Rio etc etc etc. Anyway they are showing golf. What the hell. I used to enjoy the olympics when it was just track and field. I like the spear chuckers, hammer tossers, pole vaulters and limbo bar jumpers. I guess those sports are just as glamorous as the stuff we are forced fed. I am tired of the human interest junk we are fed too. Them left hand turn drivers are looking better and better all the time.

Well I finally got around to cleaning my new toy yesterday, I stripped it down and disassembled the bolt. Man that thing is easy to take down. I did have a little difficulty putting the bolt back together because of the incredibly strong spring that locks it in place. You have to pull the locking piece back 50 thousands of an inch to allow the locking rollers to retract and it’s not real easy to do that pulling against the spring. I was surprised at how clean it was, a only slight amount of soot and residue. I was told that somehow the Tul Ammo was inferior to the named brand stuff, but after having 3 failures to feed and the receiver being as clean as shooting 100 rounds of any other brand, the opinion was obviously founded more in emotion than fact. As far as the three rounds that didn’t feed, I don’t know if the cause was the ammo, rifle or two of the magazines. I do love to shoot the thing, I came this close to going back to the range today but I just have way too much to do.

My BFF is binge watching the Olympics and eating up all those human interest stories about the hardships that the Olympians had to overcome to get there, etc. NBC apparently only puts that stuff out there to get the womenzs type folks to watch as apparently no one gives a rip about the events themselves, other than the medal counts. I asked her if any of them had reported being abandoned at birth and raised by wolves, but she said she could only come close with this one:

#54 EG: What better way is there to advance your people and community than by destroying it? The cops gunned down a terd with a long rap sheet who was armed at the time. The community should be celebrating that one of those who would randomly kill and/or rob and/or rape is taken off the streets, but no.

#55 – Remember here BC, the objective is to get the elected politicians to prohibit policing of minority neighborhoods; thus allowing the thugs to take over and rule as they see fit. Same idea as the Somalis and other enclaves have about Sharia law. Of course, the end result is the complete breakdown of law and order in the US which is a Dem objective to eventually gut the Constitution. They’ve got to get a toe hold somewhere, and they won’t stop until they do – and then it’s Katy bar the door. Oops, I meant to say, “just another isolated incident, nothing to see here, move on along.”

Milwaukee is one of the most segregated large cities in the country and has been a Democrat stronghold for decades, so you know who’s been responsible for the mess they’re in now. Milwaukee County Sheriff Clarke would likely attest to that. Not that he can do a whole lot about it even though he’s the chief law enforcement officer of the county. Governor Walker would also likely attest to that.
