Ortega y Gasset was a brilliant and influential political philosopher. A list of his books is here. The Revolt of the Masses has been in continual print for 84 years.

Good morning Hamsters. Smothering 77 at 6 with not a breath of breeze stirring. The rain cluster limping our way has barely made it near Lake Charles. It will have to hurry up if it will make it here by tomorrow as forecast.
Meanwhile American athletes brought home a lot of medals yesterday, lots of them gold. Yea for them. -
Cluelessness takes on a whole new meaning with this:
HEADLINE: Nearly 100 people shot in Chicago in less than a week
/snip
The number of shooting victims in Chicago stood at 2,514 Thursday morning. At this time last year, 1,725 people had been shot. The city has not seen this level of gun violence since the 1990s, a trend the Police Department has blamed on lax gun laws and feuding gang factions.I am pretty sure that Illinois has some of the most restrictive gun laws of any state in the country and Chicago has the most restrictive gun laws of the state; so how do lax gun laws have anything to do with the crime rate???

Yes it is. Just like all the other corruption scandals that have plagued the Clintons for the last 30 years. As soon as you resign yourself to the fact that everything Democrats say is a lie the better off you’ll be. EVERYTHING they say is a lie. No exceptions. They know it. We know it. The people voting for them know it. None of that matters. Lying and getting away with it is a resume-enhancer for Democrats. Democrats would vote for Hugo Chavez (even dead and rotting in the ground) if he were their nominee.

I sent out the family email, and in it is a very strong message from Mom to just back the hell off.
Sister still isn’t wanting to let things go. I’ve decided not to respond to her last email
She did get the private message from Mom, telling her in no uncertain terms to quit this stuff. I guess it didn’t sink in. Even though her name is in Mom’s terse message, I guess she still didn’t think it was meant for her. The savior complex is strong in that one.

Well, I had a good midmorning session at the butterfly garden. I decided to go mostly because of the cloudy morning forecast. There was a wonderful breeze blowing through some of the wider pathways through the garden. It may be getting a bit late for butterflies — I saw dozens, but not hundreds, as had been usual the other times I’ve gone there this summer to prune back the plants that were swallowing up the paver’d pathways.

Just checking on the rainy weather prospects again. Weather news on the radio at noon said there were flash flood warnings around New Orleans, so perhaps this big cluster is not totally benign. My cousin in Panama City said they’d had rain every day since last Friday and lower lying areas had flooding. She was glad to have the mess move west. Then the weather folks remind us that it was a tropical system.
Radar shows its central part is in Lake Charles and the leading edge is at Beaumont. So perhaps the rain tonight forecast is correct. -

We had a shower pass overhead, probably less than 1/10th, but it did cool things down a bit – only showing 102 now. I think the ground actually raised up just a bit to try to suck the moisture out of the air as it came by. Wind is still blowing, so hopefully we’ll get what we used to call a “squall” when out on the water.

Hmm, a westerly wind has arisen with some vigor, the humidity is 40%, and it’s 97 in the shade of the back yard and 94 on the front porch. Could that herald the remains of Earl moving in to set up a head-on collision with the stuff from LA steadily chugging this way? That might bring a bit more than we hope for.

I’m thinking that a Faraday cage might be the answer. I’ve scrolled through Sarge’s You Tube ratings materials and have not yet located a review for one. I always rely on Sarge’s reviews before undertaking a major project, but the time seems short to me.

I’m conflicted.
I’m trying to decide which is the best non-Etta version of I’d Rather Go Blind.
I’ve always thought this one was it.
But a couple years ago I was at a concert the night after Etta died and Susan
Tedeschi sang it in tribute.
The only good recording of her I’ve found on You Tube is this one, but my judgement is clouded by both the setting and the fact that Warren Haynes sings the first verse.
Bonus question:
Do you think that, given the setting, there was a reason why Warren was invited to play but not his band? -
Dang.
That led to this.
I swear if I win the Lottery tomorrow night S.O. and I are going to be the oldest Tedeschi-Trucks groupies in the world. -

OK, I’ve got my hat now, so here goes. Guccifer 2.0 has apparently invaded the Dems hen house and cleaned out all the eggs. If you’ve been having difficulty lately getting in touch with your congresscritter, or if you are curious about what they talk to each other about, here’s the list of cell phone numbers and other selected tidbits of information. I suspect there may me more on this subject later.

#39 EG: Unless I am missing something, wouldn’t a well constructed metal barn with a tight fitting double door protect cars and everything else in case of an EMP?Its a good deal more complicated than that.
My first encounter with the term EMP was when I was in an Army Reserve Unit in what was then DCPA Region V Headquarters in Denton with an outfit called the 4005th US Army Civil Preparedness Support Detachment. Our mission was to provide security and round the clock communications operations for the Regional Center, which might possibly be the Seat of Government in the event of a nuclear attack. (Its now under FEMA instead of DoD and the site has changed a good deal since I was there. )
In 1977, EMP and the danger it posed to communications was still classified and not know by the general public. At that time the Center had not been “hardened” as when it was built in 1961, the phenomenon was still largely misunderstood (and being classified didn’t help much, either). We were briefed on EMP and how it would affect our mission (and what would we could expect outside once we re-emerged after the emergency) and the construction that they were going to be performing to harden the Comm Center—and to let us know that the effort and phenomenon were classified and we’d be in deep doo doo if we talked about it with anybody.
You have to remember here that the Comm Center was inside an underground bunker designed to withstand a nuclear blast within a quarter mile—tens of feet of concrete and rebar covered with dirt and asphalt then combine that with the fact that in order to protect it from EMP it had to be enclosed in a big rectangular can constructed of 1/2″ steel plate suspended and supported by springs on all six sides to understand the magnitude of the threat.
Now, that hardening was done with the understanding that the center itself would be a target, and that it was designed with the idea that it could be the communications hub of the Seat of Government, so it would necessarily go above and beyond what most folks could expect, but the reality is that most efforts at EMP hardening that are within the grasp of regular folks amounts to tossing a mint into the ocean in order to sweeten it. Effects will diminish the further you are from the center of the explosion, but for all intents and purposes, everything electronic will be fried. You’re going to be better off learning smoke signals and cooking over a camp fire than you will be if you attempt to harden you home. -
And this one is for Shannon…

#50 Sarge: Thanks for the historical info. The article was dealing with the high altitude blast emp. If you are within 100 miles you prolly wanna be fried in the initial blast instead of having to deal with the fallout and the radiation sickeness. My thought was that, according to the article, a metal barn could easily sheild from the HIGH ALTITUDE EMP. A direct strike at ground level is limited in scope regionally, but devastating to the blast area and fall out zone. A centrally located, high altutide, EMP would wipe out most of the unsheilded eletronics in the country and that was the focus of the article.

You’re the expert. -
#55: Look pussbag, what do you not understand about the difference between a direct, low altitude strike and a high altitude EMP?
Sheesh, sometimes you are really an obnoxious PITA. -
Well, as just your average military trained pussbag I can tell you one make things fried, crumbled, and flat, the other one just makes things fried.
See you at the next PrepperCon! Make sure to bring your wallet. There’s lots of stuff for sale to make your house (and barn) immune from nuclear winter. -

I’m open for business.Put a couple of cell phones, GPS devices, I-pods, I-pads, tablets, etc inside each of them, along with a bunch of batteries and one of these into each of them and the world will beat a path to your door.
Well, a certain segment of the population anyway. -
Here’s the thing.
You can protect every device you have. You can even buy a pre-1969 automobile and keep it running. You can put away 5 years worth of food and potable water. You can store a kajillion rounds of ammo for each of your weapons.
Ain’t none of that gonna save you in the event of a nuclear exchange.
We were briefed a lot on what to expect. They had to because we all knew that if we had ever been activated to do our mission, it would mean leaving our families behind to die while we would survive.
You tell guys who need to do that the truth.
We had one guy who would begin his briefings this way:
“In the aftermath of a nuclear exchange, the living will envy the dead.”
We were told that once we came back out of that hole in the ground, we would have to shoot all dogs, cats, pigs, and rats on sight because by that time they would have become accustomed to eating human flesh.
And that was just the start of it——– -
An interesting coda on my time in the 4005th USACPSD came in the waning years of the Clinton Administration. Clinton was finishing up te job Carter started in changing DCPA (Defense Civil Preparedness Agency) to FEMA, changing the nature of the Agency from one with primarily Military leadership to an all civilian agency. The 4005th was decommisioned and all former members were invited to attend the ceremony and a dinner afterwards. The speaker at the dinner was the FEMA Region 6 Director. He was the commander or Bill Clinton’s Arkansas State Police Gubenatorial Protection detail. The job paid in the low six figures.

Weather forecast for tomorrow indicates the slowpoke system will bring rain by nightfall and likely drop a lot on varied spots, perhaps 5″ or so. Street flooding is likely. But parts of central LA got 17″ from it today. Shudder
And to our west in the Austin area Earl’s remnants are making rain as they slowly drift our way. -

Guys, guys. You let MHarp have first?? Y’all s’posed to be standing in while I start my vacation!
Oh and BINGO! -
Light showers here yesterday, although as normal it appears that there were surrounding areas that received recordable amounts. Every little bit helps. The outdoor animals had been drinking my watering hole dry every night here lately – they normally drink one-half or less, which tells me that their other sources were about gone. Looks like I finished my irrigation system project just in time to shut it off for the rainy season. Welcome, fall temps.
-
We looked for meteor showers last night but we got too much tree pollution.
-
We had cloud pollution in town and couldn’t see nuffin either.

Good morning Hamsters. We’ve had west wind and overcast since last night, no meteors to be viewed, just the bottom side of clouds. Only 84 on the front porch facing the wind and 85 in the back yard sheltered by the house. Kinda hazy even with the breeze. Hmmm.
Latest look at the radar about 30 minutes back showed most of the huge storm complex out in the Gulf but enough on land to be alarming around Beaumont. The huge flash flood boxes in central LA on east are foreboding indeed. Supposedly it won’t arrive here until about 4pm according to the weather wizards. Could be another best guess. -

Well my Wimmins’ were at PC Beach Sunday through Wednesday but headed on up to Alabama because the weather turned nasty. Daughter decided to go down yesterday since the weather had faired off. She texted me earlier and asked if I could see her on the Beach Cam. I figured out where she was but I couldn’t make out people so she stood up and waved and I could tell that it was her. She’s just to the east of the canopy left of the volleyball nets. You can also see the white Tahoe in the brick parking lot in the lower left side.
