Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Things I am thankful for (in no particular order):
God – For life and salvation, a future of hope
Husband – he ain’t perfect, but he loves me and does what he can to care for me
Family – even those that bug the ever-loving crap out of me
Blogger family – y’all keep me sane
Health – everything works, ‘ceptin a few aches and pains
Friends – there are actually people who put up with me on a regular basis, God bless ’em
Church helpers – Couldn’t do what I do without my faithful entourage helping me manage my class
Students – Seeing the light bulbs go off over their heads is truly fulfilling. And they amuse me.
Shelter – I have a roof over my head, there are those who don’t
Vehicle – I have the ability to move and go whenever and wherever I wish. There are those who can’t.
Appliances – I live in a house with all sorts of machines that make my life easier, and it’s easy to take it for granted
Job – I have something to do, and I have money to manage. On good days.
Clothing – I can keep warm in the cold weather. I don’t have to pick them out of a trash dump or donation pile
Leisure – I can take some down time to feed my soul and be creative.

This is only part of what I am thankful for. Please feel free to add your own.

Good Thanksgiving morning Hamsters. Moist out and 70 at 6 but thus far not smothering, the view of the morning was a full Moon veiled in clouds but her soft light shining through.

Thank you, Lord, for the reassuring constancy of Your creation when just about everything down here seems to be falling into ruin. Thank you for more and more of our countrymen and women gaining the will and awareness to believe they are not helpless victims of corrupt ideas and their ever-growing resolve to act on that belief.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Too many blessings to count. Keep it safe. Out here in Central Texas everyone is armed for protection against those evil deer and wild turkeys, and I suspect anything or anyone else who might decide to cause harm. Plus it looks like it may rain.

I am thankful for a long line of ancestors in Europe, the British Isles, America, and Texas. At every point on the timeline, said ancestors made good decisions that led to me being born in the best place on planet Earth. Ditto for my husband’s ancestors. Their decisions led to him also being born in West Texas, and made possible our eventual meeting about 50 years ago. We’re not perfect — who is? — but we know how good it is to be Americans and Texans.

Looks as though we shall be dining at home today, thanks to the recent brisk norther that brought tons of cedar pollen with it. Sneezing and stuffed heads would make us not very welcome dining companions at Luby’s, plus yesterday I got the fixings for a modest turkey dinner at home just in case. We can always dine out later this weekend.

Squirrels had a late breakfast in the pumpkin section of the patio. Four of them this time, two of which were newcomers who were not welcome and barely got a bite. So much for Thanksgiving hospitality out there.

Dinner is over, we are pleasantly full, the dishwasher commands almost all the dishes and glassware, there are at least two more meals’ worth of leftover bread stuffing snoozing in the fridge, and clearly we made the right choice to dine at home today. Spouse is conked out in his recliner, Mariposa is also conked out in her bed, the horses are coasting along in conference with the neighboring horses, and I’m about to nap also.

Look out below for that turkey blitz.

Hope everyone else is having their favorites today.

Rain is about to overtake us from the SW, and the breeze is picking up. Fortunately the two flowerbeds we’d planned to plant for winter got planted in pansies yesterday, a couple of days after we mixed pelleted fungicide and iron into the soil. Last winter was a disaster with fungus in the beds from the summer before. So we tried something to eradicate that for this winter and only planted two rather than four beds.
    We shall see.

I tried my hand at smoking a Prime Rib with cherry wood. This is only the second prime rib I have ever attempted to cook. When they say to take it out at an internal temperature of 130F, wrap in foil, and let rest to provide a medium rare piece of meat at serving time… THEY ARE WRONG.

That piece of beef was way too rare for just about everyone at the table. We cut both ends off and served that immediately. We took the second cuts from both ends and had to microwave them with wet paper towels over them. I wrapped what was left in foil and placed into the oven for another 30 min at 300F. When it came out, some folks said they were full. I insisted that they have seconds firsts.

By the way, this was a 4-rib 10 pounder. I can say that smoking it was well worth the effort. It will probably be awhile before I attempt prime rib again, but I think I will take it to 150F internal temperature.

What am I thankful for? A family that can handle my culinary experiments and of course the big guy upstairs.

Great Thanksgiving today. Ran 4 miles this morning to make room for the great feast the wife cooked up today and I got also to sample some of the neighbors goodies.

Just now about to finish it off with a slice a pecan pie topped with a scoop a Cool Whip and a scoop of vanilla.

Then tomorrow, 4 more miles to make room for some more.

Just got back from a lovely day at my eldest sister’s house. I managed to supply coms cauliflower mash, roasted green beans, two cheesecakes, and a zucchini-and-carrot cake. Got to see the look on Sunshine’s face when she first laid eyes on me. That always fills my heart. Between Sunshine and L’il Darlin’, I barely had time to eat, but that was okay, I was filling something other than my tummy today.

I got to see a good friend, too, on top of the family time. I made a few minutes for my Mom before heading up. Came home to find the a/c still not working and my back is tired, but I’m grateful that I have ice packs in a working freezer, so I’m good.

Packers lost to the Bears 17-13, and they shouldn’t have. McCarthy is still not calling the plays.

But on the good side, the retirement of Brett Favre’s number took place to thunderous applause, and he was congratulated by Bart Starr, who is in his 80s and is recovering from two strokes suffered some time ago. He made it to the game and also received a thunderous ovation longer than Brett’s. 🙂

We intend to stay away from retail establishments other than the hardware store and the grocery store today. Presume those places will not be crazy. Also restaurants should be reasonably sane places. Much to do switching out fall decorations for Christmas ones outside while the rain holds off.

Good morning all from the land of the Hutto Hippo’s. Great day yesterday with family. Down side was the too tight stomach from all the food, Of course, final few minutes of the Packers game didn’t exactly help either.

Other excitement was sister found another 33 inch Rattlesnake about 3 ft from where my brother was standing by the garage door last night. The 2nd one in a week and between her neighbor and her – they’ve killed about six so far this year. Baby rattler hit neighbors dog in Sept. -antivenom is not cheap for dogs!
Every year it’s always 6-8 or more.

Finally getting my act together. I came home and iced by lower back down after taking some pain killers, and finally went to bed sleeping on a cold pack. Was doing a little better this morning, but I’m certainly going to skip the gym today. Got some hang time in, fixed breakfast, more cold packs, and I’m in the office. Hubby said he got the downstairs A/C unit working, so we won’t feel so wet now. The humidity was making the house very clammy and uncomfortable. I’m just glad this wasn’t August!

I downloaded the pictures I took yesterday. There’s one of Sunshine that just captures her personality perfectly, the little goof! I sent them off to LD and AB. I took Sunshine for a walk yesterday, and she got all excited about a butterfly that let us get within 2 feet before it flew off. We kept walking and Sunshine was calling out “O-weee, ware awre you?” I thought she was calling their dog, but then I realized she was looking up in the air, trying to call the butterfly back. So cute.

LD2 spent most of her day being passed from person to person. She herself was reaching for people, wanting to be the human ping pong ball. The cat toys were a big hit with her and the other little ones there. LD2 was in my lap outside and she was shaking the cat toy, making it rattle and driving kitty a little nuts. When she dropped it, the cat pounced on it and tried to get away with it. LD2 promptly let loose with the waterworks. We retrieved the toy from the poor kitty cat, LD came outside to check on her kid, and I calmed the young ‘un down by returning the toy and loving on her. Poor kitty. Yesterday was rough.

Lacy, my sister’s long haired dachshund, freaked out Sunshine. Sweet dog, but Sunshine got a little to aggressive or something and Lacy reacted. After that, I had to keep Sunshine out of eyesight of the dog, which was hard because for a while, Lacy was following me looking for affection. Hence, the walk outside!

I brought my toddler table and chairs, along with some paper, markers, and books. I’m glad I did. It was put to use by several of the kids, but mostly by Sunshine. I always feel sorry for the toddlers at these family gatherings. It seems they always get overlooked in planning the big day. It’s dang near impossible for a small child to have a good time at these big family reunions. Sunshine and I spent hours during the day at her table, reading and coloring.

    Good times.

    KENYA FIGHTS BACK!

In Kenya a bunch of Islamic terrorists boarded a bus full of Christians. They were forcing them to recite the Shahada, the Islamic creed. Those that told them they would not do it or did not have a clue as to what it was were executed. That was pretty much all of them. Afterwards, word got back to the Kenyan government and retaliation was swift and brutal. The original group of terrorists were hunted down and dispatched to hell immediately. Then the government imposed a four-fold policy… for every Christian you just killed, we will take out four of yours and they proceeded to do so. No coddling, justifications or political correctness. Just executions – something these barbarians understand.
    /snip
First, they identified the group responsible for killing the Christians, tracked them down and delivered a quick dose of street justice – in other words, those particular Islamic thugs won’t be carrying out any more Christian killings.

    But it didn’t stop there.

Kenya is apparently experimenting with a four-to-one approach in dealing with jihadist murders. Kill twenty-five of theirs; they kill one hundred of yours.

The Kenyan military actually fired up a few fighter jets, and sent them on a mission to attack a nearby camp where known jihadist terrorists lived and dropped a few final reminders to ninety-five of their friends, killing them all.

Kenyan gunships and ground troops put the icing on the cake by taking out another twenty jihadist murders for good measure.

This may seem extreme for some, but it’s the only language that makes sense to these violent, psychotic jihadists. If you don’t deal with their attacks with a swift, deadly response, the killings just keep happening.

Kenya’s defense ministry obviously has a plan and they’re sticking to it.

Ever wonder why toilet seats in public restrooms have an open front?

I have an old friend whose first job out of Texas A&M (late 50s, early 60s) was managing a large ranch for an estate down in Matagorda. He told me when they were working cattle or during roundups out in the coastal brush they would have to wrap the legs on their horses to protect against the rattlers and he said they lost several dogs to snake bites in those days. Normally the cowdogs would be on guard for the rattlers, but during roundups, the dogs were too distracted herding cattle to be careful.

He told me the best news he ever got was receiving a job offer to take over a cattle operation in Tomball. He said the post-war Matagorda ranch house he lived in was built out of concrete because the previous ones had rotted out from the humidity and relentless termites.

And our balcony and stair rails are undergoing fabrication, and should be installed by Christmas. That’s the plan anyway.

You are under the mistaken impression that Trump followers are just rebelling against Yeb, Kasich, and Fatso (and their ilk). On the contrary the Trumpettes like Trump because he is saying what they feel. He is a mirror of their “feelings”. When Trump got in the fray I pointed out I did not understandwhy all the flap about Trump from the electorate. He was/is saying and doing all the things “conservatives” have wanted to see/hear in a candidate. He is brash, he hits back, he shoots form the hip, he is hitting on some really hot buttons that the establishment wishes we would ignore and those are the top reasons the Trumpettes like him. Oh and he ain’t affiliated with Washington as far as having sat in an elected seat. If he was a senator, governor or even some state elected position he would have been gone by now.

  70. El Gordo Avatar

#73 – Agree. Our enemies fear an insane President. The Ruskies thought Reagan was insane, and they capitulated because they feared him. Same with others who might wish to do us harm. With Casper Milk Toast in office, they know they can get by with whatever they want without repercussion, but with a swashbuckling crazy in office who is completely unpredictable, who knows what he might do. This idea of reprisal commensurate with the offense might just go right out the window, and the idea of America actually winning a conflict might just re-emerge – of course, the left fears that outcome just as much as our other enemies. So, who knows what the voting public may decide, but if the options are an insane male versus a bitter old woman, I know who I’m picking.

My father in law spoke of cattle being driven south from Austin County all the way to the Salt Grass during the droughts of the 30s and 50s.
That’s a long damn way to save a bunch of scrawny longhorn-dominant cows.

I understand. I hate Jeb Bush because he is worse than his brother and he is being backed by Karl (Marx) Rove. So we are looking at more fluffy “R”ism which to me is worse than liberalism cause it is a slower death. I know what Hill is going to do, but these damn lying republicans, once they get in they are not much different and we are stuck like chuck.

I saw a FB post the other day from a black wimminz (she had her picture) who stated emphatically that anyone who supported T could not be her friend. She went on to spew about how he was a racist and wanted to bring back slavery and some other such nonsense. From my perspective, race relations between black and white have not been this bad since the 1960s. Way to go JugEars, you set us back 50 years.

I decided this morning to put some dried pintos in the pot to soak. Normally I soak them overnight, but I wanted to see if they were ready to cook this evening, so I looked on the internet to see just how long beans should soak before they were ready to cook. Well, as you might imagine, there are hundreds of suggestions on there about how to properly soak and cook beans so as to reduce or eliminate the gas problem often associated with consumption of same, but that got me to thinking – where do you look to find out how to increase the amount of gas production. After all, why would you eat pintos at all unless you could anticipate some lasting pleasure from it. Who would want to eat beans and then just be stuck with a little popcorn popping sound? If you’re going to do that, do one that you can be proud of; one that rattles the windows and wakes the dog up. That’s what beans are really for – in college it was a competitive sport.

    This is real bad journalism.

HEADLINE: Scientists capture black hole eating a star and then vomiting it back out

No video presentations, no photos, just a cartoon, yet the headline says the images were “captured”. They have previously said that nothing can escape a black hole, not even light. Now stuff escapes when a black hole eats a star and it is called a jet. The jet escapes at right angles to the accretion disk. IMHO, that there is an observable accretion disk tells me that there is powerful rotation and north and south poles to a black hole.

#112: Great link. I love this quote:

“You’ve got a guy like Ted Cruz — who I think Dershowitz said was the smartest law student he ever had — and he says some of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard,” Bloomberg said. “The only explanation — the only explanation — is he doesn’t believe it; he’s just saying it.”

There is another explanation: Bloomers is a troglodite progressive who will lie, cheat and do anything to add more billions to his portfolio, even if it sinks the country. He is a commie koolaide drinking scumbag whose counsel merits no consideration.

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the Obama administration’s health-policy architect, says he has no desire to live beyond 75, so he’s forgoing all treatment, including PSA tests. He’s entitled.

But the rest of us who value life, including our own, need to know the facts. The Obama administration’s war on PSA tests is, in Williams’ opinion, “a cold-hearted decision based on cost.” It’s a war on men.
