Friday Open Comments – Playing with Cars

Playing with cars

LD2 has reached another milestone!

Yesterday, it was raspberries.

Today, she’s walking.

I can just see Sunshine getting her sister into all kinds of trouble…when two sisters get together and they’re both mobile…

I’ll bet Sunshine teaches L’il Darlin’ how to crawl through the doggie door.

OH, AND TODAY IS LOVELY DAUGHTER’S BIRTHDAY! She lurks, so everyone say happy birthday to her.

I met a fellow Catholic on FB when discussing an issue over a local personality. I don’t agree with all of his statements on life, especially immigration, but I believe him to be a truly devout Catholic and I think I can learn from him. If you’re interested, he’s started a blog on his Catholic life, and it can be found here.

Hurricane Patricia is the most powerful storm ever recorded, 200 MPH sustained winds, lowest pressure ever recorded 880 MB (12.8 PSI) for comparison Katrina was 903 MB (13 PSI) and the big Galveston storm was 936 MB (13.6 PSI). Watching the weather radar, one of the outer bands extends into east Texas pushing rain all the way to up to Arkansas.
From Travis Herzog,…FWIW, I don’t know who he is, I found this over yonder and added my two peso’ s from what I saw on the tube.

I’m getting very concerned about an extreme rain event for Texas this weekend. Hurricane Patricia could dump up to a foot of rain (or more…) across parts of the Lone Star State. Of course, it won’t be a hurricane anymore, but it’s tropical rains will soak us.

Pacific hurricanes are notorious for producing record rains and deadly flash floods over Texas in October:

In October 1994, Hurricane Rosa’s moisture flooded Houston and the San Jacinto River with 28″ of rain.

In October 1998, Hurricane Madeline’s moisture flooded San Antonio and the Guadalupe River with 22″ of rain.

    In October 2015, Hurricane Patricia’s moisture….

How pizzed and dangerous do you think Trump will be if the GOPe decides to get really dirty to force him out? T signed a loyalty pledge with the Rs, yet failed to get one in return. Even if the GOPe are successful in derailing T, it will kill the party because the bulk of the R voters will not tolerate that kind of deceit, unfaithfulness, dirty dealing and all around crappyness.

I remember when Gilbert was touted as the most powerful hurricane ever.

    It almost caused my divorce.

I was due to deliver Lovely Daughter about the time that Gilbert was supposed to come ashore. The hospital where I was to deliver had a hotel across the street that offered an “expectant mother” discounted room for the duration of the storm. I wanted to take advantage of it, but Hubby, being all macho insisted on taking care of his woman. At the time, we had a large, extended maxivan that he used for business. That was what he intended to drive when taking me to the hospital during the storm, if need be. My car, a little VW, would never make it through the floodwaters that form on neighboring streets in heavy rains.

Hubby kept focusing on the floodwaters, insisting that the water would have to be 3 feet deep before he wouldn’t be able to make it through. I kept telling him that the large surface area of the van turned the whole thing into a huge sail, which would mean we’d get blown off into a ditch somewhere, and I wasn’t having my baby in a ditch. This argument went on for days.

I was going to drive to the hotel and check myself in, if necessary. He would have been furious, but I would have felt safer.

Gilbert never hit Houston, so we avoided that showdown.

I just reposted a video on FB regarding KLM’s “lost and found” dog. They have a dog that sniffs items left on a plane, then carries the item to the passenger before they leave the terminal. He has a special carrier device with pockets that he wears, and after the flight attendant gives him a good sniff, she loads him up and sends him off. He then runs through the terminal, finds the passenger, and they pick up their lost items from his pockets.

What a great idea. Fun AND effective – and what a great ambassador for the airline!

What the country club R’s are failing to realize is that they are isolating themselves into oblivion. Speaking of which, I can’t believe that the so called conservatives in the House are willing to accept the Ryan nomination as Speaker. Every time we think we might get to move one step forward we take two more back.

Just came back from seeing Mom. I’m seeing a real decline. She’s fighting it. Her daily existence has turned into one unending denial of reality and facing constant frustration.

I just told Hubby I need to check that all of the legal paperwork for her cemetery plot is in place. Mom could kick on for another 10 years or so, or it could be tomorrow. Either way, I need to be sure I’m ready to take on the arrangements.

I also well remember Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. He had a notable resume around Texas, as he completely filled the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 5 (185 mph) and had the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded up to that time. As Tedtam said above, he scared the hell out of most of Texas while he got stronger and decided where to go.

You couldn’t rent or buy a generator anywhere far and wide around here while Gilbert was deciding where to go, as the weather gurus were sure he was coming here or close to us. All the building supply places were mobbed for plywood, etc. Grocery stores were swamped. Spouse was still working in Austin, and I was here with a barn full of horses. Thanks to a good friend in Austin, he was able to rent a generator on her local bank check. They weren’t taking out of town checks. So he drove home with the generator in the trunk, and we got the house and barn prepared the best we could. We’re 55 miles from the Gulf here.

Everybody who was anybody in the weather business agreed Gilbert was coming to the upper Texas coast. around here and elsewhere. Neil Frank did too. The only one to disagree was Doug Johnson, the TV weatherman, who kept saying Gilbert was going to turn left and not hit us. He was right, they were wrong, and we all were lucky. 🙂

If I lived in Houston, I’d vote for King for mayor.

I made some of my flax bread this morning. It’s been a while since I made some.

The bread recipe calls for five eggs. Hubby’s been boiling a lot of eggs for his breakfast and snacks lately. I bought a carton of 18 eggs yesterday.

Time to get some more. We’re almost out already. Only 2 left.

  27. Tedtam Avatar

Adee – King is getting my vote. I heard him on the radio, and I like most of what he said. Bettencourt has endorsed him.

As opposed to, say Costello, or some of the others. Hotze is recommending Ben Hall, but I haven’t had time to hear him. I guess I need to go to his web site and see what he says, or maybe I can find the mayoral debate that the local channel had a while back…

Big Jolly had a guest editorial by Don Hooper, endorsing Bill King. I commented that I too had decided to vote for King — by process of elimination. My mom is in better shape than my dad, from what I hear. He’s in acute heart failure, has severe blockages in both legs, still suffers from emphysema, has spinal degeneration…the list goes on.

He’s in an apartment by himself, but now has a scooter to get his mail, and has been hooked up with a local group that will take him shopping and to some social outings. His hearing is bad, but he can still see. My sister said he’s FINALLY losing weight (he’s a food addict), probably because he’s staring mortality in the face and he’s being forced to care for himself for the first time in years. He’s moving around more than he probably has in over 10 years. He had a couple living with him, and the wife made herself a slave to both of the men.

Kudos to my sisters. One of them finally has Dad’s financial affairs in order (no small task, that) and has made all of the scooter/social group/death arrangements; another sister is taking Dad to his new doctors and managing that. One other sister is seeing Dad once a week to help clean his apartment.

I was commenting to Office Help recently that we’re getting to the age where funerals will be more common, dangit. I look at my brothers and sisters and I see us as we were years ago. It’s hard to remember that the whole tribe is barreling towards retirement age at an ever-quickening speed.

Yup, amazing how the years slip by so fast the older you get and how memories of parents and those in their generation spring to mind as younger folk when you were growing up. Then all of a sudden you remember them in their older years and their passing or if they are still with you the wondering how much longer that will be creeps in. The first instance of passing a mirror and wondering who is that person looking back at you is quite a jolt. Subsequent ones usually not so much. For lots of us our brains stopped counting years and halted at a particular age of adulthood when we could accomplish so much we wanted to with the energy youth provides, even though the physical youth was in the rearview mirror.

All things considered, birthdays are special gifts in themselves and a whole lot better than the alternative. 😉

Who knew about all the floods up around DFW? My friend with the dog rescue in Ft Worth was driving back from Florida tonight with 3 cleft palate puppies and another critical care dog in the car. Highway at Corsicana was closed with dangerous flood levels. Haven’t heard yet that they gave up trying to find a way around it, but hope they did stop and seek shelter for the night. What rotten luck. Of course, she has everything needed in the car for feeding and taking care of the little ones.
