    Well stated:

A new development reported July 8th, barely a week after the Obergefell decision, is extremely dangerous for churches. Churches, like all organizations filled with all sorts of people jostling around and occasionally tripping on icy sidewalks and whatnot, carry liability insurance to protect themselves against lawsuits. After Obergefell, churches that don’t support or perform same-sex marriages are much more likely to be sued by activists claiming discrimination.

These suits ought to be unthinkable–laughable–but now they’re not. The Supreme Court, by inventing a fundamental right to have one’s sexuality validated by all of society[ii], has rendered the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment a dead letter. It has invited activist litigation against churches to cement sexuality’s superiority over religious belief in the eyes of the law.

Companies providing insurance to churches know this[iii]. One company that insures thousands of churches has responded to churches’ inquiries with a warning that general liability coverage does not protect against suits over same-sex marriage, and that churches can purchase additional Legal Defense Coverage, but that only covers the costs of a suit, not any monetary judgment imposed on a church.

Churches may soon be hopelessly caught between a rock (thousands or even millions of dollars in new tax liabilities) and a hard place (uninsurable risk of punitive lawsuits, or even just skyrocketing liability insurance costs). Some churches will change their doctrine and practices in order to get along. Many churches–especially small, independent churches–will close.

Though the article targets primarily an LDS audience, its arguments apply to all faiths. It’s an excellent read.

Wisconsin activists raided by political enemies win in Supreme Court

Three years ago, a group of ambitious and partisan district attorneys convened a special kind of investigation to target and punish conservatives. This week, the Wisconsin Supreme Court held that investigation was unconstitutional and unmoored from both reason and law.

    Hey!

Lets elect the Compassionate Conservative” Donald Trump.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is standing by his past support for universal health care.
β€œI want people taken care of in the country, okay? You can call it anything you want, but I want β€” including people that don’t have anything,” The Donald told radio host John Fredericks in an interview Wednesday. β€œWe gotta do that.”
Trump said in 1999 β€” when he was flirting with a presidential rub on the Reform Party ticket β€” that the U.S. should make health care an entitlement and that coverage should be universal.

I see that another victim in the Chattanooga military recruiting shootings has died, and the push seems to be back on to allow qualified members of the military to carry side arms again. I’ve got no problem with that, but rather would propose that we deal with the real problem – the muzzies. Of course that’s not practical either so long as the head muzzie resides in the White House.

I’ve fallen and can’t get up – unfunny version.

So we have this powered recliner (though not a ‘powered exit’ lift type).

Late yesterday afternoon the motor died in the reclined position. Needing to go to bathroom she tried to get off chair and it tipped forward, propelling her on to floor. Ankle/foot was in bad position so it was injured.

Well Lil’ Bit was looking out front and barking so I went to see if I could shut her up and there was a family of Whistling Ducks hurrying across the neighbor’s yard across the street?!?! A mom, dad and six juveniles. I grabbed my camera and headed down to where our street T-Bones the main drag. I accidently cornered them on a neighbor’s porch. I managed to get a few pictures and quickly left so as to not bother them. We’ve had some strange critters come through here but this is a first. All I can figure is that they were raised over on the drainage ditch ΒΌ mile away and for some reason wanted to head over to Lowes, there is a huge retention pond there and of course, the little ones can’t fly. πŸ˜€

Yup, an absolute treasure, so many aircraft and even a portion of a Carrier Deck.

Water is clearer in Pensacola than Gulf Shores right now.

That is usually the case, the sand is just as white in Gulf Shores but the Mobile River stains the gulf a little bit there. Pensacola to Apalachicola has the prettiest emerald green water.

Perhaps powered recliners are a new item, I don’t know.
Instead of having to wrestle with a difficult handle on the side, you have two buttons on the outside just below the armrest. It performs the same duty, but the motor slowly reclines the chair and lifts leg rest. Letting off button, you can stop it at any position you like.

A pair of these whistling ducks dropped in on our patio one time. At Chez Harp, we sit at the back window at 7 pm for a sort of family hour. Usually only lasting about 42 mins, however. Talk over the day’s events, drink a seasonal beverage, watch birds, squirrels, swamp rabbits, whatever’s in season at the time. In winter it may be raccoons or possums. So among the pigeons, doves, sparrows, and a few blue jays and cardinals, here were these 2 huge exotic birds, pecking up the seeds and corn kernels.

The whole thing wrong with this country right now is that they value politics over Honor and Duty.

I disagree with John McCain over many things.

But he was offered the chance to go home because the NVA found out he was an Admiral’s son. He refused. He said he wouldn’t go home until everybody did.

That kind of sacrifice needs to be Honor and yes, emulated, in this country right now.

Instead we get that kind of crap coming from folks who wouldn’t know sacrifice for country from a ham freaking sammich.

  70. Sarge Avatar

And here’s something else about that back stabbing buddy humper Donald Trump:

Anybody who got themselves a Draft Deferment during Viet Nam has no business criticizing a man who was shot down during that conflict.

Back in 2011, when Trump first considered a run at the White House before the 2012 election between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, The Smoking Gun shredded his ambiguous story about having a β€œhigh draft number” to shreds when they found and published his multiple deferment records. Turns out Trump received four student deferments and one medical release from serving in the military at the time, according to records and not his memory of the time:

In fact, the December 1969 draft lottery occurred about 18 months after Trump graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied business at the Wharton School. So, while claiming that he would β€œnever forget” being at Wharton watching the draft numbers being drawn, the 64-year-old Trump seems to have misremembered, as candidates are fond of saying.

Almost immediately after Trump’s McCain gaff on Saturday, reporters pointed out the presidential candidates own lack of service and his record of multiple draft deferments. However, as vocal as Trump was about how little he thought of McCain’s status as a military veteran and career politician, he had little to say about himself, according to the Washington Post:

Asked why he didn’t serve, Trump said, β€œI had student deferments and ultimately had a medical deferment because of my feet. I had a bone spur.” But Trump said he did not recall which foot was injured and instructed reporters to look up his records.

AS A HERO…… Lt Commander McCain surely is one. The man’s conduct as a United States serviceman under the conditions he was held was exemplary and most men would have broke. He did not.

During the Viet Nam war medals were not handed out for just any old thing. Lt Commander McCain was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star for missions flown over North Vietnam.

During those days I would have served with that man with enthusiasm.

Trump needs to step down. He is not fit to be Commander in Chief for any country much less my president.

Ace comments on the Trump flap.

    3. And the problem is not just this comment; the problem is that we see now that this is a habit. Someone claimed to me yesterday that Trump had “balls.” I countered: He doesn’t have balls, he has Money — he’s a rich guy surrounded by favor-seekers and yes-men who hasn’t been contradicted since he first spat the silver spoon out of his mouth. He has the arrogance that college athletes get sometimes, that lead some of them to do horrible things — the arrogance of knowing there will never be consequences.

I don’t call that balls. Balls — courage — is taking on an important fight knowing there will be consequences.

This is just an elderly rich kid with a big mouth.

    4. People might say, “But he can learn.” I disagree. For this reason only: In order to learn, one must wish to learn; and to wish to learn, of course, one must believe that there is something important yet to be learned, something that isn’t already known to one’s Big, Throbbing Wonderful Ego.

To wish to learn is an act of self-abasement; it is a brave act saying “I am incomplete, I am less than I should be.”

Very egotistical men do not like learning. Learning is for the weak, or the young.

Trump went to Wharton, he’s always eager to tell you; he did his learning then for a couple of years. He’s all done now. Now, he will be giving lessons.

The Donald got people all over talking about what needed to be aired in public rather than discussed earnestly and quietly among friends. The really important stuff if we are to restore the republic needs to be freely discussed in public and in all media even as the MSM distorts it for its own purposes.

The Donald stuck his leg in his mouth up past the kneecap this time with the unseemly McCain remark that spread to effectively insult many more veterans than only John. Load brain before firing mouth.

However we do have courageous candidates like Cruz, Walker, Fiorina, Rubio, Christie for example who speak their minds and let the vicious backlash roll off. Be mindful that they are not the only ones who need to carry the message. The grassroots folks need to carry it as well to their neighbors and friends and strangers. Daily that is, for the MSM works hard to bury the vital stuff behind the fluff and mindless stuff of the day. It’s our contribution every bit as important as campaign donations to be active and conversational, not passive mice in the corner only grumbling about this or that candidate’s comments.

It was We The People who engineered the 2010 and 2014 tsunamis at the polls. Lots of us have the playbook down pat, but lots more need to start reading it and join in.

I read the Ace of Spades article and I also noticed this comment.

As a veteran, one that was in war, I can understand your argument that it offends some people who are innocent bystanders.

I thought I just read a post here that argued that another person’s offense does not make their position legitimate or something along those lines.

I agree with trump on this one. Being a POW does not make you a HERO. Plain and simple. Any tom dick or mary can be a POW, even non military members. It does not make them heroes. What makes a person a hero is facing evil adversity and defeating it. Whether that adversity was slavery as in the 1800s, the NAZIs in Europe, Hussein’s Iraq, the KKK in America. As long as what you face is evil and you defeat it, or at the very least take more of them out than they take out of you. Yes, you can be a hero that is also a POW, you can be a dead hero, and you can be a living breathing legendary hero.

But just being a hero does not in and of itself make you a hero. John McCain is living proof of that. He has spent his life since being a POW fighting the good aspects of America and helping defeat them.

The fact is that McCain is a scum bag. What he may have done back when is history. You cannot separate the good from the bad but must take the entire measure of the man – and he comes up short in the decency and honorable departments. Whatever good he may have learned in his earlier years has long since been forgotten. Now as to what the Donald said, he’s free to say whatever he wants. Until a racist or whatever other form of degenerate is free to speak his peace in this country, we are not a free country.

Or, perhaps, standing up to an evil communist government that wanted to make propaganda points by letting you go home because you’re an Admiral’s son by telling them that you’re not going home until everybody else in that Hell Hole goes home with you.

John McCain wasn’t “just” a POW.

You can honorably disagree with his politics.

But I don’t want to see anybody who has denigrated McCain’s service complaining about what Obama or other Democrats say about Veterans anymore.

You’re doing exactly the same thing to my way of thinking.

  96. Sarge Avatar

And if we’re going to use comments on Ace’s post as illustrative, here’s a good one:

7 Yeah, I saw that this morning, and my thought was, he’s pretty much done. Most POWs knew they could be captured, and they went in anyway, knowing that.

You might as well say, soldiers who die, they’re not heroes. We should only celebrate those who survived.

That said, I wish he’d taken a little longer to say something this stupid. I had hoped that his jumping on immigration was the result of meeting what the market wants, so to speak, the market being the most voters possible; thus forcing the other candidates to also address the important issues.

But while there have always been some people who complain that McCain shouldn’t have allowed himself to get shot down, it’s not been a winning argument. And I have to admit, I dislike it more coming from the right than from the left.

McCain’s service is just what it is, no more, no less. So is John Kerry’s. But I do find it offensive to be told that someone’s individual service is heroic in nature while the homeless, maimed, disturbed, and otherwise disrupted lives are not recognized, and in the case of this swine, discredited if they do not agree with him. He talks but does nothing but leave fly specks in his trail. His military record is a relatively brief period of his life, and it’s passed it’s expiration date. And just a suggestion – if you don’t want to hear something that someone else has to say on this blog, it’s time to move on (speaking for myself of course). As I previously noted, we are not a free country unless we are free to express our opinions, regardless of how revolting they may be to some others.

  100. Sarge Avatar

McCain’s “brief” service extended from 1958, when he graduated from the Naval Academy (although one could make the case that his service began in 1954 when he entered it), until he retired in 1981. Some folks might think 25 years of service is “brief”, I tend to think that 25 years is a substantial chunk of one’s life span.

22% of his time in the service was spent being tortured by the North Vietnamese. He spent 18 years in the Navy after returning home in 1973.

Ok, let’s forget the fact that we have an elitist crony capitalist who received deferments from the same war and now is publicly pronouncing that a man who was in a NVA prison for six years and tortured the entire time is not a war hero.

What about the fact that the man of the hour has only recently been describing himself as a Republican and has, in fact, publicly supported the Clintons among other rabid Democrats. What about the fact that for most of his adult life he was staunchly pro-abortion? What about the fact that he has repeatedly used governments to exercise eminent domain to obtain private property he covets? Let’s ignore all that and anoint him because he doesn’t like Mexicans. Oh, and by the way, he’s employed Mexicans of the illegal variety at his many businesses.

So if we apply your same test to Trump, and look at his life’s work, he doesn’t even have the honorable military career to fall back on.

24 “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and does according to all the abominations that a wicked man does, will he live? All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die. 25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Hear now, O house of Israel! Is My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right? 26 “When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and dies because of it, for his iniquity which he has committed he will die. 27 “Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. 28 “Because he considered and turned away from all his transgressions which he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
    NASU

Using the above to form an analogy, McCain was a righteous man while refusing to be released from the Hanoi Hilton unless his fellow soldiers were also released. The problem comes about later, because McCain’s deeds in the Senate can in no way be considered righteous; therefore all his previous righteous deeds will not be remembered and he will die for his sin.
That being said, Trump stepped in a fresh pile of poo and will not likely recover from it – nor should he.

Spouse likewise had a deferment in college during the Viet Nam war, most probably because his major was physics and government types thought that was a good thing to study. About a year before he finished his thesis project and the end of the long haul was at least on the horizon, I was walking through the student union one afternoon and came upon a Marine recruiting area. Yes, this was at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in the 60s before the place went hard lefty nuts starting in the 70s. ROTC was well filled, and the normal folks greatly outnumbered the flower children.

An absolutely dashing young Marine in uniform noticed me looking at the displays and asked if my husband had fulfilled his obligation to serve his country. I replied he was working on it, and that evoked a rather quizzical look and the question what was he doing. I replied that spouse was finishing his doctoral thesis experiment in nuclear physics, and that knowledge could result in creating something effective and nasty for our armed services to throw at the enemy if required. He thought about that for a few seconds and then grinned, wishing spouse great success.

And as fate would have it, instead of ending up in a government lab like Los Alamos as one of his cohorts did, we ended up in Houston in March of 1969, he initially with Schlumberger Well Services in the nuclear logging tools department. A totally different world than expected.

    3. Did Trump say McCain is not a war hero because he was captured? No, not in the exchanges represented in the Post.

    4. Is the Post’s characterization an accident? It would appear not, because it is repeated in the Post’s caption of the video clip, which also states: β€œRepublican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a decorated Vietnam war veteran, was not a war hero because he was captured by the North Vietnamese [emphasis added].”

Further, in the Post’s second sentence, Trump is quoted as stating of McCain, β€œHe’s not a war hero…He’s a war hero because he was captured,” but the article selectively left out the phrase Trump had uttered in between: β€œHe is a war hero.”

That said, when McCain calls people “crazies” and insults them as regularly as he does, his heroism is not immune from, um, “feedback”. I do not care for Trump, never have in terms of his politics and, yes, his is very much a spoiled brat, but his line of liking people who were never captured in retaliation for McCain’s insulting remarks was a bit of brilliance on Trump’s part.

Chris Salcedo has picked up the Trump/McCain story this morning. As usual the couch is ahead of the curve.

My position for quite some time has been:
JugEars is going to do whatever it takes to cause a mass uprising so that he can declare martial law, suspend the Constitution and declare himself emperor.
Did anybody notice that the flags in DC were not at half staff in honor of the fallen in Chattanooga? Did anyone notice that the white house failed to send a single representative to any of the funerals?
How far is he going to push and is there a line that we the people will not tolerate?

The only flag I saw properly at half staff out here in Katy was the nearby Ford Dealer – half a dozen or so further west were not
