…and surprised more don’t seek other occupations. I think they have. That’s part of the problem. I have a cousin who, after raising her kids and supporting her husband through retirement, went back to school to get her teaching degree. Her passion was inspirational. She wanted to teach kids the most at-risk. Coincidentally, she was offered a job in HISD… Read more »

Education today gives points, etc. for the number of books read – no matter the content or the comprehension of same. One of my boys (5th Grade) has previously informed me that he didn’t care if he finished his reading of the books because of that. I enjoy a good book even when difficult to get through it and we read… Read more »

And the answer is NO it is not. But still it is my fault for not noticing the highlighter.

Virtually everything I type into has spell highlighting for anything suspicious. Even an excellent speller can make a typo. If I write hippocorpamus — which is not a word — the editor I am in underlines it in red to call my attention to it. Normally I would correct that, but I’ll leave it to see if it is still… Read more »

If you don’t know how to spell a word then look it up, or don’t use it!

Not a chance. Those who can’t spell are generally unaware of it.

I apologize following and in advance of egregious spelling and grammar errors in posts here. It used to come more natural but it’s become something I have to work hard at. Sometimes I just shrug my shoulders and say what I want to say when I can’t get out what’s in my head.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Agree with Shannon about smarty pants auto-correct messing things up at times. Maybe that is the annoying culprit in the numerous times the singular woman ends up being plural women in so many comment sections just about everywhere. The writers can’t be that dumb. I’m sure the auto-correct can be that dumb. And perhaps those comment sections don’t come with… Read more »

I just blow off the spelling errors now…

I do too, but for a different reason. There’s usually some “progressive” nitwit grammar Nazi saying “You misused ‘then’, therefore your entire argument is invalid.” I don’t want to be like that guy.

#51 fat albert Indeed the ease and speed of keyboards leads to diminished use of handwriting, particularly when hands are a bit stiff or sore from arthritis. Spouse and his younger brother unfortunately both inherited their Mom’s significant arthritis in the hands including some joint deformity. That restricts spouse’s cursive writing efforts to shorter sessions and rather limits uniform printing.… Read more »

There are so many, but the then/than thing still makes me cringe.

I just blow off the spelling errors now by blaming auto-correct, pretending there couldn’t possibly be that many bad spellers.

I have to confess (sadly) that I have lost the ability to write cursively, simply due to disuse. Me too. I have to go back and pull out my penmanship award from 3rd grade to remind myself that I used to know how to write. The spelling issue is another thing entirely. To me nothing speaks more quickly of a… Read more »

Adee: I have to confess (sadly) that I have lost the ability to write cursively, simply due to disuse. But, I can and do print neatly and legibly when required. Sadly, true penmanship is indeed a dying art (interesting, my wife is a commercial artist who is accomplished at calligraphy. So I rely on her for that kind of thing.… Read more »

I just finished watching a video of a panel discussion at the 25th anniversary of First Things magazine and honoring founder Richard John Neuhaus. R.R. Reno, current editor, told of a meeting he had with Neuhaus following the 2006 Congressional elections which were so disastrous for the Republicans. Reno had predicted the outcome and was quite upset. Father Neuhaus, puffing… Read more »

#32 fat albert Sadly, I think you nailed it. One might hope that the smaller number of private and parochial schools still keep literary values alive as well as traditional teaching methods that have worked well for generations in many disciplines. There is some excuse for illegible cursive signatures/scrawls as being exclusive to the owner of same and for difficulty… Read more »

I got up early this morning (for me, for me) and wanted some exercise, so I made a start on a long-neglected job in the front yard. I had paid mowing last year and the doofus did a terrible job, of both mowing but especially edging. Result was San Augustine runners infiltrated into every flower and shrub bed. I started… Read more »

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there. Any young man can father a child, but it takes a man to be a real Daddy! Me and my Daddy @ Kowaliga Beach, Lake Martin, Alabama June of 55, I’d have been a year and a half.

It is commonplace for a child to graduate High School in the US without ever hang read a line of Shakespeare, or Tolkien, or Kipling, or Dickens, or any other significant classical author.

#24 Adee: Actually, it’s even worse. I discovered a long time ago that a large part of the inability of the current generation to write was the fact that they don’t read. Most of the stuff the ir schools require them to read is poorly written dreck and in a lot of cases the English teachers are as poorly educated… Read more »
