I meant to post this yesterday. It is an excellent piece by the great legal scholar Randy Barnett on the meanings of the passages in the American Declaration of Independence. Barnett includes this as a casebook study in his Constitutional Law course every year.
    Via The Volokh Conspiracy
    The Declaration of Independence Annotated

But to justify a revolution, it was not thought to be enough that officials of the government of England, the Parliament, or even the sovereign himself had violated the rights of the people. No government is perfect; all governments violate rights. This was well known. So the Americans had to allege more than mere violations of rights. They had to allege nothing short of a criminal conspiracy to violate their rights systematically. Hence, the famous reference to โ€œa long train of abuses and usurpationsโ€ and the list that follows. In some cases, these specific complaints account for provisions eventually included in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
The Declaration of Independence used to be read aloud at public gathering every Fourth of July. Today, while all Americans have heard of it, all too few have read more than its second sentence. Yet the Declaration shows the natural rights foundation of the American Revolution, and provides important information about what makes a constitution or government legitimate. It also raises the question of how these fundamental rights are reconciled with the idea of โ€œthe consent of the governedโ€ for which the Declaration is also famous.

And on an entirely different subject…
Did you know there has been a dramatic rise in recent years in oral and throat cancer among males in our society caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) ? Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan has it and so did actor Michael Douglas.
Strains of HPV are known to cause cervical cancer.
Remember back when Rick Perry wanted to have every young female in the state of Texas vaccinated for HPV with Merck’s Gardisil ?
Will Perry or someone else now advocate the same for the young boys of Texas ?

So this week Iowahawk announces buying a home in Texas.
And in May in Pennsylvania, Scott Ott, of worldwide Scrapppleface political satire fame, announced his resignation from his county commissioner’s post in order to move to Texas.

Are all the conservatives in America moving to Texas ? If Steyn leaves New Hampshire for the Texas Hill Country, we’ll know it’s true.

I arrived yesterday morning at the home Lovely Daughter and Aggie Beau. Lovely and I took Sunshine on a shopping trip, to give AB a little space (he had a rough week at work), to spend time together, and to check out Coldwater Creek’s bankruptcy sale. It seems that I could use some new – smaller! – clothes.
Despite the bankruptcy sale, I still couldn’t afford their prices on many of their items, but I did buy two shirts. The best part was when Sunshine found the mirrors. She loves mirrors, and will carry on a conversation with herself that rivals any of the Democrat press conferences in coherence and logic.
Lovely and AB are being very considerate of my very low-carb diet. They made special spring rolls for me, using cabbage leaves as the “roll”. They excluded the carrots from my special portion of the stir fry. Very sweet, thoughtful, and much appreciated.
We went to see the fireworks at the Bush Library at A&M last night. Sunshine was allowed to stay up waaaay past her normal bedtime, but she truly enjoyed them. She may not remember them, but she enjoyed them last night!
As I sit here Sunshine is falling asleep in my daughter’s arms for her morning nap. I’ve already had some play time with her.
As is said here often, life is good.

Here’s an interesting painting of an interesting landmark, the Mount of the Holy Cross, that I first heard of just yesterday. I was listening to Michael Medved (on 1070 AM) read his essay on “DIVINE PROVIDENCE IN AMERICAN HISTORY” when I laid down for a nap. The painting is much more striking than any of the photographs I found in google images.

    CALVIN COOLIDGE:
โ€œOur forefathers came to certain conclusions and decided upon certain courses of action which have been a great blessing to the world. Before we can understand their conclusions we must go back and review the course which they followed. We must think the thoughts which they thought. Their intellectual life centered around the meeting-house. They were intent upon religious worship. While there were always among them men of deep learning, and later those who had comparatively large possessions, the mind of the people was not so much engrossed in how much they knew, or how much they had, as in how they were going to live. While scantily provided with other literature, there was a wide acquaintance with the Scriptures. Over a period as great as that which measures the existence of our independence they were subject to this discipline not only in their religious life and educational training, but also in their political thought. They were a people who came under the influence of a great spiritual development and acquired a great moral power.โ€
โ€œNo other theory is adequate to explain or comprehend the Declaration of Independence. It is the product of the spiritual insight of the people. We live in an age of science and of abounding accumulation of material things. These did not create our Declaration. Our Declaration created them.โ€
โ€œThe things of the spirit come first. Unless we cling to that, all our material prosperity, overwhelming though it may appear, will turn to a barren scepter in our grasp. If we are to maintain the great heritage which has been bequeathed to us, we must be like minded as the fathers who created it. We must not sink into a pagan materialism. We must cultivate the reverence which they had for the things that are holy. We must follow the spiritual and moral leadership which they showed. We must keep replenished, that they may glow with a more compelling flame, the altar fires before which they worshipped.โ€ โ€“ Remarks at the Liberty Bell, July 5, 1926

UFC womenโ€™s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey logged her fasted career finish at UFC 175 on Saturday, dispatching of No. 2 ranked Alexis Davis in just 16 seconds.
Rousey came out in her usual fashion; fast and furious. The two women met in the center of the octagon, and Davis landed first with a right hand. Rousey responded with right hook that stunned Davis. She followed it up with a knee to the face before tossing Davis to the canvas with a judo throw. Once on top, Rousey unleashed a series of right hands that left Davis wrestling the referee and a Nevada Athletic Commission official following the stoppage.

How long would it take you to walk 2,160 miles? What if the route was almost entirely up and down mountains? Could you do it completely on your own, no help from the outside at all?
The record is 58 days, 9 hours, and 40 minutes.
That’s a speed of 1 1/2 miles an hour, IF you walked 24 hours a day. More realistically, that’s an average of 37 miles a day.
In couple of days, this guy is going to try and beat that record.

Sunshine is at her most mellow in the morning. I went downstairs and she came to me and wanted me to hold her while I sat down on the floor. I had her facing me, and she just put her head on my shoulder and put her arm “around” me as best she could.
Baby cuddles are possibly the BEST way to start a day!
Lovely Daughter, Aggie Beau, and I stayed up to play a game last night. There was much laughter. We’ll go to mass together this morning, and then I’ll be heading home shortly after.
I’m going to miss them all when I leave. But until then, I’m milking this visit for all its worth. I’m just so glad that Sunshine loves her Noona and she smiles when she sees me, and wants me to hold and play with her. And I’m glad her parents invite me up to visit so I can have that relationship with her.
