Thursday Papal Open Comments

The current Pope certainly got Rush’s panties all in a wad recently. As I listened to Rush, I had a strong, strong feeling that he was seriously misinterpreting what the Pope had said. Fr. John Trugilio at the Ucatholic website has come out with an article on this Pope v. Rush controversy:

I often listen to Rush Limbaugh… He uses common sense and logic to expose the fallacious arguments of liberal progressives. Unfortunately, he himself has fallen into a trap by which he erroneously extrapolates a false premise from the recent papal document from Pope Francis.
Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) is an apostolic exhortation issued on November 24, 2013. While not an ex cathedra infallible document, it nevertheless contains ordinary papal magisterial teaching that demands submission of mind and will by faithful Catholics.
Rush is uncharacteristically inaccurate in his quotations. Pope Francis did not criticize unfettered capitalism; he used the phrase unfettered consumerism. …
/snip
Capitalism is an economic and political ideology, whereas consumerism is a personal and individual ideology. The former is focused on a free market; the latter is obsessed with the acquisition of goods in and of themselves. … One denies the right to access of necessary goods; the other deifies materialism and promotes avarice, greed and envy. A free market system, on the other hand, treats human beings equally…
What Pope Francis, Pope Benedict, Pope John Paul, Pope Leo and others have consistently been saying and teaching, however, is that the individual person is a moral agent. He must answer to God for what he did or did not do to help his neighbor in need. …
That said, besides personal acts of Christian charity, it is logical and reasonable, prudent and necessary to pool resources and, even for the state, to help in cases where the most needy and most urgent cases are helped. Yet no pope ever promoted, nor called for, a welfare state that perpetually cares for the poor. The ultimate goal is to enable the poor to rise above poverty and reach a level of dignity commensurate with their human dignity.
Access to necessary goods is a natural right. That does not mean, however, that the natural moral law requires the poor to become enslaved to the state by permanently keeping them dependent. Rush calls Pope Francis a Socialist at best and a Communist at worst. Does this sound like a commie comment?
/snip
… capitalism was actually created during the high Middle Ages and, …Catholicism is what created it…. through the so-called Dark Ages, during the 12th to 14th centuries, the middle class arose thanks to capitalism, which eventually replaced feudalism. Medieval guilds and religious orders, such as the Cistercians, became contemporary entrepreneurs of their time.

‘They mastered rational cost accounting, plowed all profits back into new ventures, and moved capital around from one venue to another, cutting losses where necessary, and pursuing new opportunities when feasible. …. the Cistercians needed labor-saving devices. They were a great spur to technological development. Their monasteries ‘were the most economically effective units that had ever existed in Europe, and perhaps in the world, before that time.’ (Novak)

Thomas Woods’ How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization has an entire chapter titled “The Church and Economics” in which he, too, proposes that money was not an artificial product of government … but a result of a voluntary process between merchants…. the Cistercians devised accounting systems by which goods could be bought and sold between fellow monks, and this was duplicated by lay merchants who participated in the process.
… it is… Catholic doctrine that all men and women are created in the image of God…That spiritual equality was translated into an economic equality… The emerging middle class came from the peasant class. They did so because their faith taught them they were equal in the eyes of God and therefore had equal opportunities to improve their material situation. Those who could not – the destitute poor, the lame, widowed and orphaned – relied on the Christian charity of the nobility and the emerging middle class.
It was the Church who literally created the colleges and universities, hospitals and orphanages, and who ran the poor houses and soup kitchens. The secular state (government) did not create these institutions…
/snip
We need laws to maintain some parameters on banks and stock brokers to protect people from abuse and exploitation. Republicans and Democrats dispute the length, breadth and depth of such legal regulations, but even a free market has some borders that cannot be ignored. Limited government is still very different from no government. Some, even if minimal, legislation is needed since not everyone acts prudently or fairly or for pristine motives.
That said, it was totally unfair and inaccurate of Rush to attack Pope Francis… The pontiff was merely reiterating consistent Church teaching that supports a free market, but also reminds the moral obligation to act responsibly, honestly and prudently. …. Welfare dependency helps neither the individual nor the nation. Some welfare is necessary…However, the goal is always to help move those into economic independence and become self-sufficient.
/snip
…All Pope Francis is warning is that the possession and acquisition of goods is not salvific, nor does it bring lasting joy. Pleasure is temporary, whereas joy can be eternal.
The pontiff is not forcing any nation or government to abandon capitalism; he’s not advocating socialism let alone communism. He is, however, reminding Catholics all over the globe that we must buy and sell prudently while using our consciences….
I highly urge Rush to read Father Robert Sirico’s Defending the Free Market …. Father Sirico precisely shows that freedom requires a free market and that greed is no friend of capitalism. Rather, greed flourishes under socialism.

We have witnessed the LSM cherry picking what Pope Francis has said/written to fit their own twisted socialist thinking, and the NYT is only the most recent prominent perp. It would be helpful for those who properly seek to clarify what Francis really said if they would vigorously point out what the media deliberately left out or distorted or concluded, for the LSM still regrettably reach more ordinary folks than any other source. The Pope on consumerism:

The great danger in today’s world, pervaded as it is by consumerism, is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart, the feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a blunted conscience. Whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades.

That describes exactly the modern “progressive”. So caught up in their own libertine world they no longer care about those in need. They’ve farmed out their conscience to their false god – the government. To assuage their guilt they seek to empower the government to steal from us. They buy $10/pound free range chicken while protesting GM crops that could feed millions. They drive to Starbucks in their Prius to buy a $5 Latte and give no thought to the toxic waste that will be produced in a few years from their dead racks of batteries. And don’t you dare put that landfill in their backyard!
But in their twisted minds they read the Pope’s words and somehow divine an indictment of capitalism? That’s all we need to know about “progressivism”.

the individual person is a moral agent. He must answer to God for what he did or did not do to help his neighbor in need.

I think that is the line that is the scariest to liberals. They want to foist off their personal responsibilities onto a large, impersonal government and thus avoid making any real sacrifices or effort on their own behalf.
I’m not talking about the thousands of good-hearted souls who labor in the trenches, practicing what they preach. I’m talking about the party leaders, organizers, and supporters, who spout “thou art they brother’s keeper” while handing out piddly amounts to charity from their own pockets, or who use charitable actions as photo ops. They can claim to love the poor and downtrodden, to try to improve life for the masses – as long as they don’t have to get their hands dirty or make any adjustments in their income or lifestyle.
We are personally and individually responsible for our actions. Confiscating money from a large group of people to give to another large group of people, does not constitute charity. It constitutes larceny writ large, and does favors to no one. The poor remain dependent, and the “forced donors” swirl the same drain as the recipients.

    Young invincibles spurn O-Care.

Mounting opposition to ObamaCare among young adults is creating a new crisis for the White House.
While the federal enrollment website HealthCare.gov appears to be improving by the day, polls show the “young invincibles” key to making the law work are becoming less likely to enroll.
Younger people were skeptical of the healthcare reform law even before its troubled rollout, despite their support for President Obama.
    ~
A poll released Wednesday by Harvard University’s Institute of Politics found that more than half of 18- to 29-year-olds disapprove of ObamaCare and believe it will raise their healthcare costs.
Even more troubling for the administration is that less than one-third of uninsured young people said they plan to enroll in coverage.
Without a large number of young, healthy people in the insurance exchanges, it could create a “death spiral” of high premiums that could threaten the long-term viability of the marketplaces.
The White House appears to recognize the growing threat, and is making outreach to younger people a major focus of its ObamaCare relaunch.
The president began the effort on Wednesday with a youth summit at the White House where he urged audience members to spread the word about the new healthcare exchanges — and think hard about their own health risks

You left out a key point: 80% of the welfare budget goes to overhead to run the system. Confiscating punitive sums from a large segment of the population using the full force of government and the threat of imprisonment and/or seizure of assets, under the guise of charity, only to consume 80% in the process in order to keep someone on subsistence, is not charity it is extortion. It is the Chicago way. It is the way of fascist dictators throughout history.

It is called theft. Taking my money in the name of governmental benevolence to give to anyone is called theft. The taking of my money to “promote the general welfare” is called theft.
And there in lies one of the larger problems that we have in this country. The concept of private property rights that this nation was founded on has been tossed out the window, I do not know why it is, but people will fight tooth and nail to protect the private property of of people with the exception of money. Think I am wrong most people do not realize just how much money is taken form them monthly. They look at their paystub to make sure their allowance is correct and never really realize just how much money has been CONFISCATED/STOLEN/SEIZED/MISAPPROPRIATED from them. And they think they stuck it to the man when they get some pittance in the form of a tax refund.

Access to necessary goods is a natural right. That does not mean, however, that the natural moral law requires the poor to become enslaved to the state by permanently keeping them dependent.

The necessary goods probably include food, but I for example have no natural right to take the lettuce you grow at your place. Also, the writer has his enslavements reversed. It is primarily the taxpayer who gets enslaved, paying for the sustenance of the welfare class. Then secondarily I guess you can say the moocher is enslaved to the state. Although we have ample evidence that many welfare slaves think it is smart to be a moocher.

Here in the greatest state in the union, TEXAS, we never really own our property – even after it is fully paid for. We must rent it from the state, that rent is called property tax. For an example of the enslavement of the poor, all you need to do is look at the vast number of people who have been “helped” by LBJ’s “Great Society”. There are multi-generation families that have no “breadwinner” who holds or has held an actual paying job. These people would have a very hard time simply making it to work, even if we assume an actual job were to be made available to them. Moreover, these people have become militantly dependent on gov’t handouts and are demanding ever more over time.
Note the terminology used: access to necessities is a basic moral right. It says nothing about giving those necessities to some after taking from others. Recall Paul’s statement in one of his letters (Timothy?) that if one is unwilling to work, he should not eat.

The oil companies pass that cost onto the consumer so we are still at the bottom of the barrel. Just like i do not appreciate being singled out simply because I choose to smoke. That does not matter in the course of the discussion. Taxes on oil revenue are still paid by the folks.

The issue is private property, when your house is paid for and you no longer owe any money on the purchase of the house it is not really yours as you have to rent it from the state. The state, in order to assess the value of your property, could decide that they need to inspect the outside of the premises – structure and land- to accurately determine the tax due. The taxing entity could then decide(however unlikely that may be) that in addition to the structure and the land, they should tax your furnishings. This would, by necessity, grant them access inside your house to take an inventory. This is a major problem with taxing property, just where does it stop and it opens the door to the state invading your space. Taxing consumption is a different matter, if there is no property tax the state has no legal excuse to come on your property, other than a sworn affidavit and with a warrant in the case of criminal activity. One has significant discretion as to how much one consumes and therefore the tax associated. When it comes to property tax, we are at the mercy of the state and the individual has little if any power.

Wind-driven light rain and dropping temps showed up here a few minutes after 9, and the rocket ride down commenced. Currently merely overcast and 55 on the front porch that gets the north wind. Leaves flying in the gusts, and you’d never know that on Tuesday the yard was raked before the last of the flowers got planted and mulch put on all the beds. I just went out to the back porch with Barf Kitty to give my head a break. The front is coming through, felt first by the gentlest of whispers on my skin. Barf Kitty was very interested in all the activity in the yard, from the leaves falling like a gentle rain. I didn’t let her out of my lap, however, since she is an indoor cat only. I didn’t want her excitement to capture leaves allow her to escape. Not that I’d worry too much – the cold and rain would drive her back to her warm water bottle on the couch, but since she’s never been outside and has very little in the way of insulating fur, I’d hate for her to become ill if she was stuck outside long enough to get cold and wet.
So I held Barf Kitty at bay by scratching her ears, and I finally came back inside. The temperature is taking a noticeable drop.

Do I respond to his claims? Or do I just say we deny his charges?

One thing for which I will be eternally grateful is the internet’s ability to access virtually every news story, document, interview, report, declaration, Midrash and, in this case, Apostolic Exhortation.
All of my life, I was at the mercy of some journalist paraphrasing what someone else said and interpreting their intent, mood, attitude and vision. And I could never go around them to the original source – not in any practical or realistic sense.
For the last 10 days, I have seen critics and defenders of Pope Francis’ papal document going to and fro about what he said, what he meant or, more importantly, what he did not mean. What continues to pi$$ me off these days are commentators, such as Rush Limbaugh, who neglect to link to the writings of others they choose to criticize. Rush wouldn’t have done that 10 or 12 years ago, but he’s become lazy in allowing himself to believe he’s too important to do that sort of thing anymore. When I read the transcript of his original broadcast about the Apostolic Exhortation of November 24, 2013 or, as it is formally titled, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), Limbaugh couldn’t even bring himself to describe it by it’s proper name so listeners could go to the document and read it for themselves. This is what Rush used to criticize the MSM for doing. Apparently, nowadays, listeners don’t have to make up their own minds – Rush will do it for them.

His column is fascinating and informative about the origins of capitalism in the European Dark Ages, however, while most of his piece doesn’t address the content of the recent papal document, he does a great job of defending the free market economic principles of the Catholic Church.
Having said all this, I have my own critique of the document derived from reading Pope Francis’ actual words in the 224 page Exhortation. Thank G-d for the Internet !!! Really.
And I should also say I agree with the vast majority of what he writes.
I’m not finished with my reading, but anyone interested can find the sources of my initial differences in paragraphs 53-60 and 202-208.
Read the whole thing for yourself: Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel)
    ***********************************************************
Last, but not least, does anyone know if Pope Francis writes in Spanish or Italian and then has it translated by staff members into English ? This is an important question for me.

That’s true, but I guess the advantage would be that the Chromecast is the device doing the streaming rather than the laptop / tablet / phone. Once you set it up to play on the Chromecast, your device would be freed up to do other stuff. In my kids’ case, they will be setting it up to work with their phones, so HDMI cable is not an option there.

I do but not the chirrenzes. The deal there is that the streaming is done through the Chromecast via WiFi. The phone basically just points it to what to play. Yeah, either that or it can get power via the USB port on the TV if one is available. I saw some people saying that on later versions of HDMI it can receive power directly via the HDMI port, but I’m not banking on that. A pain it is, but like you say, not a deal breaker for us as we do have power available.

Due to some linguistic and archeological evidence in part based on an improvement in carbon dating the idea of Polynesian diffusion with pre-Columbian America is being revisited.

Recently, though, scientific opposition to at least some diffusionist ideas has begun to waver. A huge blow to the skeptics came more than a decade ago, with the discovery of archaeological evidence that ancient Polynesians ate sweet potatoes, which are native to South America. Presumably, Polynesian sailors ventured to South America, obtained sweet potatoes and brought them back to their home islands.
That discovery seemed to undermine a major plank of the critics’ old argument: that Polynesian travel to the Americas was physically impossible. Still, direct evidence for Polynesian contact with North America has been scarce.
Until now, that is. Now, the tide is turning in this old debate, in a way that might transform our understanding of the early peoples of the Golden State.
    Chumash canoes yield clues
The first bit of new evidence is Klar and Jones’ analysis of the Chumash word for “sewn-plank canoe” — which they claim is extremely similar to the Polynesian term for the redwoods used to build the same mode of transport. (The Polynesians made their boats from redwood logs that had floated across the Pacific with the prevailing ocean currents.)
The Chumash word for “sewn-plank canoe” is tomolo’o, while the Hawaiian word for “useful tree” is kumulaa’au. The Polynesians colonized Hawaii during the first millennium A.D., and in the process their language evolved into the Hawaiian language. The Polynesian word tumu means tree or tree-trunk, and ra’akau means wood or branch; Klar’s complex linguistic analysis shows how the combination of those two words evolved into the Hawaiian kumulaa’au. Many Hawaiian words that start with “k” originally began with “t.” Replace the “k” in kumulaa’au with a “t” and the similarity between the words becomes obvious. The similarity is so great, Klar says, that it is highly unlikely to be a coincidence.
The sewn-plank canoe was the Chumash Indians’ version of an ocean-worthy yacht, a vehicle sturdy enough to allow them to fish in deep offshore waters. Traditionally, Native American canoes were relatively simple objects, often dug out of logs or assembled from bundled reeds. By contrast, the sewn-plank canoe was a highly engineered vehicle, one in which planks were cut, heated in hot water and bent into streamlined shapes. Holes were drilled in the wood, allowing the planks to be sewn together with strong plant fibers from yucca leaves. Tar was affixed to the gaps between the planks, making them watertight.
The resulting vessel was sleek, lightweight, fast and durable, or the perfect vehicle for long-distance travel through choppy waters, including deep- sea fishing areas.

    in front of the oven
in front of the washing machine
    in front of the frig
Those are spots where the radiant tubing loops are closer together, so they’re a few degrees warmer than the rest of the floor. Thankfully, except for the spot close to the frig, she won’t be in the way too much.
She used try to get into Handsome’s room all the time when we ran the boiler. His floor got REAL warm, because he was closest to the boiler and got the hottest water. Once Barf Kitty got underneath his bed, it was dang near impossible to dislodge her. Hubby adjusted his zone, and now she’s not so interested.
