I’m watching an episode of a cancelled show called “Lie to Me”. Imagine a character like “House” but with deception detection instead of medical mysteries. I really liked the show, and was very disappointed when it vaporized.
Along the same lines, I loved “Firefly”. I didn’t think I was going to like it, but was pleasantly surprised. Short-lived it was. Dang it. When I came across a picture of the cast, it took me a minute to realize that the main character was the current lead on “Castle”.
I also really liked “Veronica Mars”. There was something about her dark badness with a good side that appealed to me. Sassy, smart, pretty – but don’t cross her! I guess we’ll never find out how her father gets out of jail now. Which I guess is okay, because he showed up as the lead cop on “Flashpoint,” another of my favorites.
So, what shows have you liked that were cut short way too soon?

Good morning Hamsters. Cooled off now, so this early morning is most enjoyable at 57 and dry, clear sky, and a barely waning bright Moon on her way to bed. Fall is back again.
Regarding TV shows that quit too soon, I still miss JAG. Though it birthed NCIS that is still going strong as is NCIS Los Angeles. Star Trek lives on Netflix, the original and the spinoffs. We’re almost to the end of Star Trek Next Generation, having previously seen all of Deep Space Nine again. Still have Voyager to go. -
While providing exemplary evidence she is a pluperfect imbecile, Maureen Dowd exposes why she can’t find a man or even get a date…
Dowd, meanwhile, declared, “Men are so last century,” and also quipped: “Saudi Arabia is oppressive, but it’s more liberated than the Catholic Church.”
-
I’m not familiar with the other two but I did like Firefly. It’s still on in reruns, seems like Sunday night after the news. Around the same time frame as Firefly, Farscape was another good sci fi series.
-
My favorite recent show is “Breaking Bad”. I’d say it ended too soon, but I actually think Vince Gilligan was smart to end it when he did. I read an interview with him where he indicated that he felt the plot was beginning to go in too many different directions. Rather than just milk another season out of it, he chose to go out strong. On the flip side, there will be the “Better Call Saul” spinoff. Still not sure how I feel about that one.

The health-care law has become a political burden for elected officials who support it. Almost four in 10 Americans say they are more likely to oppose a politician who backs the legislation, while just over a fifth say they would be more likely to support such a politician. That’s the biggest gap recorded in Post-ABC polling during the entire debate over the law.

How about genuine Conservatism within the Republican party, that did not last anywhere near long enough.

This is one BIG yute! An interesting question was raised in the comments section, will he have a short life because he is so wissin big? I think we all know that real big dogs don’t live long, Great Danes almost never see 10.

Federal Judge denies Holder appeal in Fast and Furious investigation by House. That is the good news, the contempt of Congress designation sticks to Holder. Now for the bad news:
“They still have all their claims on the merits which could take months,” Brand said. “There’s still not order saying they must produce a single document. We’re six months or more from that final decision and it will be appealed then.”
So it is obvious that Holder is going to attempt to run out the clock. The odds that Hitlery or any D will be elected as prez after this disaster and the fraud, illegal behavior and general ineptitude of the entire admin are slim and none; slim was last seen at the train station about to board. The real question is will the next prez, presumably an R, actually prosecute the blatant crimes of this administration? I say it is doubtful at best.

Just received letter from my employer of a 17% ($100) increase in my health premium. I had my figures slightly wrong yesterday. This latest increase makes the shared premium $597.14.

This latest increase makes the shared premium $597.14.
Shannon, is that for you and Mrs. Shannon every month? Mrs. Bonecrusher is covered at work at little deduction from her check. I am covered under her dental for $50/month. I and my 2 chirrenzes, 22 and 20 yrs old are covered under an individual bronze plan at $560/month. This is the first time I have been covered under insurance for over 20 years. In my total adult life I have never met my deductible.
I am married to a wonderful woman and I have 2 healthy intelligent chirrenzes. Have I mentioned lately that I am a blessed man? -
In the fall of 2005, there were 3 new sci-fi shows that I started out watching. One by one they
were cancelled and none completed their debut season. Since then, I rarely watch any new show.
The one I liked best was Threshold, mostly for the kewel effects with the fractal patterns, which betrayed the presence of an alien. The cast was dreadful, especially the horny midget scientist.
Next was Invasion, where the town’s beautiful doctor played by Kari Matchett seemed to have dolphin blood and could stay alive under water.
The third one was Surface, where unseen or barely seen terrifying creatures were coming up from the ocean floor. I remember very little about it. -
Mrs. Shannon is on Medicare. This covers only me ($1000 deductible).
-
My deductible is substantially higher, but we have no pre-existing conditions. It really chaps by nether region to be forced to make the equivalent of a car payment on a really nice car, for something that I am highly unlikely to ever use.

Musings on the upcoming Thanksgiving horror known as Black Friday.
Here’s a true story: a few days ago I had a conversation with a friend where we both lamented about the meaning and message of our important holidays being lost in a commercialized haze. Yesterday, this same friend posted on his Facebook page, excitedly announcing Best Buy’s earlier Thanksgiving opening time.
snip
Why give thanks for what you have when there’s so much you don’t have? That’s the new meaning of Thanksgiving: count your blessings, and then buy some more blessings and count them again.http://themattwalshblog.com/2013/11/17/if-you-shop-on-thanksgiving-you-are-part-of-the-problem/

I loved Firefly as well (hoped you watched Serenity as a follow up). The blend of the old west and futture space travel is fascinating. The actors were consistantly strong in their roles and the series could not “do without” any of them. As per the character names (as oposed to the real actor’s names), Malcome Reynolds stars in Castle as you mentioned, Jayne starred in Chuck, River Tam starred in the TV series, The Terminator (she was the Terminator), and she fills in for some episodes of Alphas,. Walsh and Simon Tam appear sporadically in shows and Kaylee starred in one ofthe Stargate series’. Sheppard Book appeared in Marvel’s Agents of Shield and Zoe (and Reynolds) appears as voices for superheroes insome Justice League cartoons I’ve watched with my kids. This is just off the top of my head.
Ddi you catch how Castle once said that he learned Chinese on a TV series he used to watch? That’s esoterically very funny. 🙂 -
#21 Texakanukianite: Your point is well taken and I will raise you this:
THE AMERICAN PUBLIC IS DRAMATICALLY OVER-MARKETED AT ALL LEVELS! With the politicians lying to us ad nauseum and conveniently exempting themselves from the false advertising laws they make for the private sector, and commercials on TV that can not be escaped telling how inexpensive their product is over brand X, yet they obviously make enough profit to pay for the excessive amount of commercials, so how can they be less expensive?
As a case in point, Safelite auto glass goes through period where they super-saturate all the airwaves, TV and Radio, with advertising and even claim to have a competitive price; yet Advantage Glass 713-862-7600, was over $100 less per windshield when it came time to replace mine and Mrs. Bonecrusher’s windshields.
I try to teach my chirrenzes that if a company is supersaturating the airwaves with their advertising, you can rest assured that they are not the cheapest and they will screw you.
As a consumer and a citizen, when the big winds blow one way, I almost never go there as the sheep that do usually get sheared. -
A show cancelled too early was Hill Street Blues
-
TT;
I also liked “Lie to Me” but it did get old quick for me. -
On the other side of the spectrum, MASH ran for quite long enough, longer than the war it depicted in fact. One of the characters played by the late Harry Morgan, in the end was Col. Potter, but he appeared in the show way earlier in the series when Trapper John was still on the show, he was a General who was completely unhinged and out of touch with reality.

Okay, I need to vent, and this is VERY off topic (dragging out my soap box):
There is a family discussion via email about where and when to have our family Christmas get-together this year. My brother and his wife have already volunteered to host Christmas for the tribe, but they are dealing with cancer in their family, so, as usual, I have a sister who decided to stir up the ant’s nest by opening it for discussion amongst all of the siblings instead of talking to them directly about what they wanted to do or not do.
The suggestion I made that we meet on a day after Christmas, to reduce the load on everyone, was shot down at our last family meeting without much discussion. Now, since another sister has suggested the same thing, it’s being considered an option. Or maybe its because it’s email and it’s harder for strong personalities to control the discussion that it’s being considered.
And I’ve offered the Dome as a gathering place. Hubby and I designed the kitchen especially for our big Christmas gatherings. Two sisters (I have 8 sisters, and the brothers are being very quiet, which is probably smart on their part) have now come forward expressing concern about the safety of my home and my yard for kids. I’ve been to the homes of these two mothers and their homes when their kids were young were more hazardous than I consider mine. I have a weed covered dirt pile and a concrete floor. Those are the two biggest problems for young kids. Oh, and a cat which I’ve said I can lock upstairs in my office, since she’s not used to crowds and Aggie Beau has cat allergies. “I agree that there is no safe place for kids at Tedtam’s house. We’ll have to get a work crew together to go to her house the day before to make her backyard safe.” This from the highly cluttered, crowded home of one mother with raised porch with stairs and a big dog on a leash or loose. And she has a child with serious learning and speech difficulties. She can supervise her child there, but not at my place??? A large patch of grass is “unsafe”???
I am trying to distance myself from the argument, but I find it more than annoying. I am just not going to vote, and let them decide.
Oh, and the other option that’s been volunteered – a home with concrete floors and a much smaller yard with a swimming pool.
As my Hubby says, “It’s always the people you love who hurt you the most – because they are close enough to reach you.”

I remember watching some TV shows long ago, but I don’t remember any of their names. I wasn’t even sure if TV was still on or if everything had moved to the internet.

Much as I liked Hill St Blues, I thought it was getting contrived by the end of its 7-year run. Every couple working at the station that could be paired up, had been paired up, and every cop had someone close to them get shot down, or got shot down themselves.

Time for my morning home exercise set. I go to see the surgeon this afternoon for the roughly 1-month evaluation. I graduated from the walker to the cane this week. It was difficult to find a cane I wanted. Most I saw at Walgreens and CVSes were garish multi-colored geometric patterns. There is a brand new CVS built right across the street from The Gulag, and we stopped there after my session on Monday. Found one that was perfectly plain black aluminum.

Doh!!!
“Jessica Sanford was cited by the president as an Obamacare success story at a health care event he had here at the White House in the Rose Garden on October 21,” says a reporter for CNN from the White House. “That of course being just last month. The 48-year-old single mom from Washington state purchased what she considered to be affordable health care, life-changing event, she said, on the Washington state health exchange. She decided she was so excited about this news, she wanted to write an e-mail to the president to say that this had really changed her life and that she was thankful for the Afforable Care Act. The president included her e-mail in his remarks to people on hand for the event. Here’s a bit of what the president had to say.”
The CNN report quotes President Obama as saying, “I recently received a letter from a woman named Jessica Sanford in Washington state. And here’s what she wrote, I am a single mom, no child support, self-employed. and I haven’t had insurance for 15 years because it’s too expensive. I was crying the other day when I signed up, so much stress lifted.”
“But days, just really three days after she was mentioned by the president, Jessica Sanford started having problems, she was receiving letters from the Washington state health exchange,” reports CNN. “The first letter telling her that tax credit was reduced, therefore, increasing the cost of her health care plan and the, take a look at this, then she received a letter just last week telling her that her tax credit had been taken away all together. Show you another document here, showing what the tax credit worked out to be… zero dollars according to this document that was provided to us by Jessica Sanford. She describes all of this as a roller coaster ride. Now she says she can’t afford insurance in Washington state because of the new developments.” -

SWEEEEET!!!
Here comes “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” It clocks in at two and a half hours, covers everything you could imagine, and is so well liked it has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s ten notches higher than the original “Hunger Games.” Amazing. What’s it like? It’s like “The Empire Strikes Back” for 2013. For the middle chapter of a trilogy, “Catching Fire” has tons of actions, lots of narrative, and ends with a… question mark.
As the three 13 year old girls who were in our party said last night at the screening: “That’s where it stopped???” They loved it.
Truth be told, “Catching Fire” is very entertaining. It’s a great big B movie in the B for Best sense way. It’s got breathless action and rarely stops. But it also has a lot of heart, character, and development. -

Obama is set to appear at a luncheon at the SFJAZZ Center on Nov. 25 to benefit the DNC, but whether it’s a sign of donor fatigue or a general lack of interest, tickets have not been selling as expected.
And don’t get dizzy with all that spinning…
“An exciting new update I would love to mention is that we have reduced the price for the general admission luncheon tickets to $500/person,” Shefali Razdan Duggal, a member of the DNC’s national finance committee, wrote in the email. “In addition, all current $1000 ticket holders will be upgraded to VIP (this includes premium seating near the stage and Presidential rope line access).”

Much as I liked Hill St Blues, I thought it was getting contrived by the end of its 7-year run.
Everything on TV today is contrived. They all follow a typical pattern. If you watch the first 4 or five shows of anything on the telly today you have pretty much seen “everything” to come.
(WARNING the following is also a Throw down of the gauntlet to Bonecrusher to top this for twisted)
Main example: I used to watch CSI. The story lines are generally the same, the writers find yet another bizarre way to kill and mutilate the bodies, CSI’s step in looks around, find the odd public hair in the refrigerator freezer linked to the wrong hermaphrodite gay bear in a clown suit singing show tunes who just happens to know the local plumber that had a grudge for the victim that continually plugs their toilet with golf balls. Too break up the monotony of the repetitiveness the same ol spin they toss in some story line of the main character like marriage or love interest. Oh my the spins that come off that too. AND watch closely there is always a cell phone call taken between 15-20 minutes of the show.
So called situation comedies are not funny, same old drivel attacking white males over 50, degrading the family unit or attacking religion.
Movies are not much better. They are usually rehashes of old movies. Movie franchises follow predictable tracks too. Introduce the characters, have the epic battle and save the day. Volume two introduces us to the “weaker” side of our hero and Volume 3 always introduces us to a hero that is struggling with his own good/evil demons.

#59 Twisted Bro: As far as predictable goes, the hero-spy can routinely fight off at least 5 guys who outweigh him by at least 40 lbs. He can take several “full blast” shots to the face and not even get bruised, let alone knocked the wiss out, yet a simple back fist will knock the opponent for a loop. This same spy also has the hacker skill to invade even the most heavily fortified computer centers with nothing but his phone. Add to this that the spy always can drink copious amounts of straight whiskey without even blinking, almost like water and never get drunk. Then when he does have to get in a car he can blast through red lights and magically miss all the traffic while the bad guy will get t-boned.
-
There is nothing from a store that I need badly enough to leave my family on Thanksgiving.
Lone exception for me would be something at the grocery store too replace something for dinner, e.g., if someone spilled the whipping cream.

#27: Seeing as how one or more of your sisters can be a bit of a pain, simply withdraw your house from consideration. Further on the broadcast email, for your sister who is dealing with the cancer issue, declare her house off limits due to thier speciffic difficulty. Then invite the non-cooperative sister to come up with a plan that suits everybody by 01December for a vote. After the vote fails, which it likely will, then re offer your house for the day after and leave it open to all who wish to attend. If they feel your house is not safe, then invite them to stay at home.
Just because they are family does not give them permission to act like jerks. -
#36: Very clever indeed.
-
Things you see in all the action hero movies nowdays is
1. The epic “IranMan” landing on 2 knees/one fist breaking the cement and the slow look up
2. The epic jump from a height to the bad guy while getting ready to crash down some hammer or club or whatever
3. The ever popular explosion through a down town street tossing cars and people willy nilly. Variations include but are not limited to massive fireballs coming toward the audience a;a Independence Day
4. Epic explosions or destruction of such icons of America as the Whitehouse or the Statue of Liberty.
5. Car chases or or spaceship chases are all basically the same. Locations change like through valleys/forests/asteroid belts downtown New York
List goes boringly along. And the use of CGI is so outlandish it has lost all oh wow value for me. -
I long for a good old fashioned John Wayne type western. I want a good old fashioned whodunnit mystery that really does tell a story. SIGH

A large portion of the error-riddled, multimillion dollar federal health insurance exchange system has not even been built yet, according to a senior official involved in the construction of the website.
The revelation came Tuesday during a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on the possible security risks surrounding healthcare.gov.
“The committee’s been reviewing materials that indicate that some parts of healthcare.gov were not completed before the launch, as we’ve discussed here,” Rep. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) said. “What portion of the website remained to be created when you launched on October 1st?”
“I don’t have an exact percentage,” said Henry Chao, deputy chief information officer of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. “I look at it in terms of overall marketplace systems.”
“I think it was a set of priority functions that needed to be in place,” Chao added.
“Well, how much do we have to build today?” Gardner pressed.
“Just an approximation, we’re probably sitting somewhere between 60 and 70 percent,” Chao said.
“Sixty to 70 percent that needs to be built still?” Gardner said. -

Bonecrusher:
Believe me, your suggestions were thoughts already in my mind. There’s a lot of family history involved, so I am trying to take a route that won’t totally destroy relationships that I’ve tried to build with my siblings for years.
Not that I won’t eventually take the nuclear option…just trying to avoid it. -
One reason I wanted someone like Netanyahu to become Israel’s Prime minister is to have someone strong in that office who’ll stand for Isreal, even standing up to the United States (liberal governance) when needed:
President Obama finds himself in a weakened state. His health care law is sapping his political strength and generating intense anxiety among his Democratic troops in Congress. His performance rating is at an all-time low. His trust with the American people is deteriorating badly, as reflected in a recent Quinnipiac University poll. His political capital is ebbing.
And into this dire political situation comes a new challenge that will test the president’s resolve and mettle in a big way. If he wants to save his high-stakes effort to foster a negotiated agreement with Iran over its nuclear program, he must take on, directly, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israel lobby in the United States. If he doesn’t, Congress will kill his effort; the opportunity to find a peaceful solution will be lost; and chances for war with Iran will rise ominously. Indeed, administration officials have warned that the current congressional push for new sanctions on Iran, in the midst of his delicate efforts, would constitute “a march to war.”
But that is precisely what Netanyahu seems to want—to upend the talks between Iran and the so-called P5+1 nations (United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France and Germany) because he considers this modest first-step agreement in the works as “bad and dangerous.” Speaking to the General Assembly of Jewish Federations of North America in Jerusalem recently, Netanyahu urged U.S. Jews to “stand up and be counted” against Obama’s effort.http://nationalinterest.org/commentary/obama-netanyahu-go-war-9420

#90: The nuclear option would be telling the offending sibling(s) to wiss off they are not invited. What I am suggesting is calling them on the BS and not letting them manipulate you anymore. That video that Texanadian linked to on #35 is well worth the watch. In the video he claims that the problem is the inability to handle agreement, I suggest that the problem is the refusal to be open, blunt and honest for fear of hurting someone’s feelings or playing politics (be that office or national).
Being open and honest about the behavior that you may find offensive is the best way to make it stop. -
URGENT PRAYER REQUEST
My brother in law was just life flighted to St Lukes due to a stroke. I have no other information. Please pray for a full and complete recovery.
Thank you -
I have more fun anticipating the return of the Wilhelm Scream in the vidiots.
They’re even putting it in commercials now. I do like to look for it in older movies back when they first started putting it in as easter eggs. Spielberg was good about that. I watched Poltergeist last weekend and had forgotten it was in that one.

Kneemail on the way.

Bonecrusher, my prayers to you and yours. May the prognosis be for a quick and full recovery.

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to block controversial Texas abortion restrictions that have been called some of the strictest in the country.
The court by a 5-4 vote denied a request by Planned Parenthood to block a ruling by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which allows key parts of the Texas abortion law to stay in effect while the case plays out.
The ruling means that a provision will remain in effect requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges to a hospital within a certain geographic location. Planned Parenthood is arguing this provision makes it difficult for Texas women to obtain an abortion.Remember the old meme from the “progressive” abortion ghouls that 97% of Planned Parenthood services provided have nothing to do with abortion? Wonder why they’re threatening to close down clinics where 97% of the services are women’s health care. Sounds like a real war on women to me.

BSue hates watching new movies with me. I love tearing up the plot line by pointing out that i had seen the same thing in an older movie. Especially fun with movies that are not “obvious” remakes or reboots of the originals. -

Thank y’all. I just got an update:
He is able to speak and move about a bit, but weak on one side. He is lucid. The docs say that the next 24 hrs are critical. He has had heart vessel bypass surgery and suffers from asthma and allergies. The docs say that he could have another stroke or a heart attack any time in the next day or so, they will be watching him very closely in ICU. The docs said that if he does not get any worse over the next day or so he could make a reasonable recovery. -
Delicious Schadenfreude is when five miles down the road the guy that unsafely passed you at 100 mph is leaning spread-eagle against his trunk for the DPS.

#106 The DPS tends to take quite a dim view of we plebes travelling at triple digits on thier highway. Ask me how I know. . . .

My wife is at the hospital with her Bro in law, and she was commenting about where she had to park, he said that he parked on the roof. He has not lost his sense of humor. Unfortunately he is barely able to get any cooperation from his left side.

Good luck to your BIL. That was a clever joke; clearly he is still mentally alert. Houston is still the best place on the planet to be in an ICU. -

It’s actually a game we play….seeing who can figure it out first. -
I long for a good old fashioned John Wayne type western. I want a good old fashioned whodunnit mystery that really does tell a story.
Amen brother.

To all my couch friends, many thanks for the prayer cover for my Bro in Law. He is my wife’s sister’s husband. He is without question my favorite brother in law.

I have figured out I may be the only one on this blog
• for whom ScyFy network is the last channel I ever turn on
• who was a casual fan, at best, of Star Trek
• who has never seen a Harry Potter movie or read the books
But hey, I used to watch Dr. Who on Sunday night, every once in a while. And Xena Warrior Princess. Hubba. Hubba. -

Bonecrusher;
Thoughts and prayers for you, your brother-in-law, and his family. -
Bonecrusher;
I just said a word of prayer for your brother-in-law and felt a bit inspired to say that despite what the outcome may be, there is an immense peace in our Lord who is the Son of God to be felt by all. God’s plans are eternal and all is taken care of in the end.
May you and yours go with God. -
Poochie thanks you in advance.
Colo. man signs up for his insurance, his dog gets covered insteadHe’s not sure exactly how the confirmation letter went to his dog, but he says he thinks it’s because of a series of security questions a representative asked him over the phone.
“There was some kind of code or something, so I gave them my dog’s name,” Smith said. “They must have just put it in the wrong slot or something.”Yeah, that’s real smart to advertise. Probably voted for Obamacare.

I just discovered I have access to lots of free movies with my Amazon Prime membership. Pretty cool. During his homily Sunday the priest asked for a show of hands for those who had seen “A Man for All Seasons”. For some reason I’ve never seen it. He gave us “homework” so I came home and, instead of watching stupid football, watched the moobie on Amazon.
The priest tied More’s last line:I am commanded by the King to be brief, and since I am the King’s obedient subject, brief I will be. I die his Majesty’s good servant but God’s first.
To the Gospel reading:
Before all this happens, however,
they will seize and persecute you,
they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,
and they will have you led before kings and governors
because of my name.
It will lead to your giving testimony.
Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,
for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking
that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. -

Yes you do, hamous. Plus I’m sure your two day shipping comes in handy this time of year. My free trial a couple of years ago got me out of a small jam. PHEW!!!

I’m busy looking at phone options for Mom. She only gets $60/month, and we were told that she’s going to have to shoulder more of her Medicare costs. So I have to shop for phone plans and see what I have to do to get MedB for her.
