Conservatives in this country — at least those who have not made their peace with the New Deal, and there is serious question whether there are others — are non-licensed nonconformists; and this is dangerous business in a Liberal world, as every editor of this magazine can readily show by pointing to his scars. Radical conservatives in this country have an interesting time of it, for when they are not being suppressed or mutilated by the Liberals, they are being ignored or humiliated by a great many of those of the well-fed Right, whose ignorance and amorality have never been exaggerated for the same reason that one cannot exaggerate infinity.

Sounds like a contemporary description of the political situation on the right today, doesn’t it? It was written by William F. Buckley (PBUH) almost 60 years ago.
The article itself is an indictment of National Review, the magazine founded by Buckley, demonstrating that they have become a tool of the “well-fed Right”.

Good morning Hamsters. Icky forecast for tomorrow-Thursday so get outdoor stuff done today. Started today at 66 and mugly from the Pacific hurricane remnants drifting across Mexico and over us that will make lotsa rain when the cold front squeezes it. Some areas are likely to get more rain than needed…. Right now we won’t need any more for a week or so.
Perhaps a Halloween costume that includes a canoe or umbrella would be wise. Or as Channel 11’s weatherman David Paul said last night, maybe someone might wear a raincoat and go as a flasher. That comment almost went over the heads of the rest of the newsfolks on the set. 🙂 He just said it as an aside in the context of costumes and continued with the forecast.

Ace posts today in a similar vein, critiquing an article published in NR yesterday.

…the National Review piece by Ramesh Ponurru and Rich Lowery in the morning headline post. Basically it’s the same piece we’ve seen dozens of times in the last month or two…grassroots conservatives need to focus less on “purity”, stop being so strident and let the adults run things.
    snip
The biggest issue I have with Ponurru and Lowery article (and the rather common argument it recycles) is that the conservative base is bad at winning elections and fights battles it can’t win. This seems an odd critique to me given the “tea party” wing of the GOP not only wasn’t responsible for the losses of 2006, 2008 and 2012 but was actually the driving force behind the one major electoral success the GOP has had recently…taking back the House in 2010 after the “establishment” lost it 4 years prior.
Have there been setbacks in Senate races? Yes. Have some “tea party” favorites been disasters? Obviously. But let’s not pretend that “establishment” candidates haven’t lost races either. Connie Mack in Florida, Pete Hoekstra in Michigan (not only wasn’t he a “tea party” guy he ran an ad that was worse than Christine O’Donnell’s notorious “I’m Not A Witch” ad), Denny Rehberg in Montana, George Allen in Virginia, and Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin all were “establishment” picks and all lost.
And had the “establishment” had its way Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz wouldn’t be in the Senate. Nor would Marco Rubio or Pat Toomey (mixed though they have been).
At the presidential level, no one can say with a straight face that John McCain and Mitt Romney were “tea party” darlings. How’d they work out for everyone? Granted the “tea party” couldn’t produce a reasonable alternative in 2012 but that doesn’t absolve the “establishment” from failing to produce a candidate that actually was “electable”.

The front end technology is not the problem here. It would be nice if it was the problem, because web page scaling issues are known problems and relatively easy to solve.
The real problems are with the back end of the software. When you try to get a quote for health insurance, the system has to connect to computers at the IRS, the VA, Medicaid/CHIP, various state agencies, Treasury, and HHS. They also have to connect to all the health plan carriers to get pre-subsidy pricing. All of these queries receive data that is then fed into the online calculator to give you a price. If any of these queries fails, the whole transaction fails.
Most of these systems are old legacy systems with their own unique data formats. Some have been around since the 1960′s, and the people who wrote the code that runs on them are long gone. If one of these old crappy systems takes too long to respond, the transaction times out.
Amazingly, none of this was tested until a week or two before the rollout, and the tests failed. They released the web site to the public anyway – an act which would border on criminal negligence if it was done in the private sector and someone was harmed. Their load tests crashed the system with only 200 simultaneous transactions – a load that even the worst-written front-end software could easily handle.
When you even contemplate bringing an old legacy system into a large-scale web project, you should do load testing on that system as part of the feasibility process before you ever write a line of production code, because if those old servers can’t handle the load, your whole project is dead in the water if you are forced to rely on them. There are no easy fixes for the fact that a 30 year old mainframe can not handle thousands of simultaneous queries. And upgrading all the back-end systems is a bigger job than the web site itself. Some of those systems are still there because attempts to upgrade them failed in the past. Too much legacy software, too many other co-reliant systems, etc. So if they aren’t going to handle the job, you need a completely different design for your public portal.
A lot of focus has been on the front-end code, because that’s the code that we can inspect, and it’s the code that lots of amateur web programmers are familiar with, so everyone’s got an opinion. And sure, it’s horribly written in many places. But in systems like this the problems that keep you up at night are almost always in the back-end integration.
The root problem was horrific management. The end result is a system built incorrectly and shipped without doing the kind of testing that sound engineering practices call for. These aren’t ‘mistakes’, they are the result of gross negligence, ignorance, and the violation of engineering best practices at just about every step of the way..

Umm, speaking of my therapy notes: Yesterday one of my gorgeous PTs told me my walker is an inch too short for my best walking therapy. NOTE: I have 2 PTs; Lori is like a blonde softball coach; Amparo is like a brunette ballerina. Amparo is working on my gait, among other things.
The story of my walker is it’s the tallest model for a “yute”: up to 32″ grip height. The 4 days I was in the hospital, I used the shortest one for a small adult: 32.5″ and up. When it was time to go, I tried both and felt like the shorter one supported me better, got me moving faster, just fit me better. All of which was true, because I was leaning over the thing with my elbows braced.
So now I have to relearn how to walk including: don’t drag the left foot like Iago, stand up straight and not leaning forward, elbows not locked in place, etc. I have just ordered the small adult version so I can train for a better gait. Otherwise I am told, my back and hips may be affected. I will keep the shorter one for use the first week I am home after New Knee #2, when I believe it may help me tremendously. After that I might donate it to Goodwill and hang on to the slightly taller one.

Keep this development in your prayers:

Just three months after the ousting of Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi, it appears Egyptian authorities are taking a big step toward protecting the freedom of worship for the nation’s Christian community by lifting major restrictions on the construction of new churches.
Ahram Online reports that the committee working on amending the suspended 2012 constitution on Sunday adopted a transitional article that will nullify current restrictions on the construction of new churches. The 50-member committee adopted another article calling for “absolute freedom of belief” for all Egyptians.
To now, Christians — who comprise an estimated 10 to 15 percent of the population — have been required to obtain special presidential permits to construct or renovate churches. There is no parallel law regulating the construction of mosques.
International Christian Concern writes of the proposed amendment, “This development would mark a major change on Egypt’s historical stance towards the construction of new churches and religious freedom. Please pray that this measure is written into law.”

Went to vote yesterday afternoon at the Baptist Church on FM 359 near Pecan Grove. All spouse and I have on our ballot are the 9 amendments and one Fort Bend County bond issue for road improvements, which are very much needed thanks to our rapidly growing county. Turnout has been light out here, but this is good practice with the voter ID system before the primaries next spring.
No problem with my driver’s license not having my name exactly as on the voter registration. Poll workers simply had me initial a box on the signature section affirming that I am the person listed on the voter rolls. This took about 1 second to accomplish. The license lists my maiden name as a middle name, and this is the difference. Bet that situation covers most of the name differences for married women.

I awoke Sunday morning to the horror that I had left my iPad laying on the patio table the night before, and it poured all night. I stood it up on a towel and did not touch it other than to keep rotating the sides it stood on until I got home tonight. I agree with you, but I have found that the “Do Not Call” list should be renamed as the Do Not Call Unless You Think It is Really Important”. It is mostly a joke.

Their point is, perhaps, a good one. Its based on the fact that Obamcare is modeled after Romneycare.
Which is why the Republicans lost in 2012. Had they had had a candidate who could have honestly run against both monstrosities, there would have been a better outcome. As it was the Pubbies stayed right away from Obamacare because they knew the issue was Romney’s biggest Achille’s Heel (he had four or five feet upon which plant an Achilles Heel).
