I’ve been using various forms of Linux since about 1998. I’ve used all the ones you listed last night at some point. For the last six or seven years I’ve used Ubuntu and have been very happy with it. If you have a computer that you can afford to play with I would recommend installing a clean Ubuntu and let it do all the partitioning for you. It comes with LibreOffice by default which is just a fork of OpenOffice (because of some weird geek war that I never quite understood).
If you don’t need official technical support, GnuCash may be an acceptable alternative to Quickbooks. It has functionality for small businesses. I’m not familiar with Quickbooks but if it exports files in QIF format you can import those into GnuCash. There is a Windows version so you could try it out and see if it would work for you.

Hamous, ever used WINE? I’ve avoided it myself as my purpose in going to Linux was to avoid Windows entirely rather than try to run Windows programs under Linux. In general, the things I’ve read about WINE on forums have been from people whose experiences were negative.
For my personal finances, I use this. I’ve been very happy with it, but of course that is for personal stuff and not a business. Professionally speaking, I am stuck with Windows. Most of my job involves using SolidWorks and there is very little intent on their part to develop a Linux version.

  7. Hamous Avatar

Dooood – I’ve played with Wine over the years but every program I’ve tried sort of works but not quite well enough to use. I’m not impressed. If you have Windows-only programs that you just can’t live without, and have a Windows OS install disk, install Virtualbox on Linux and run Windows as a virtual machine is the best alternative, IMO. Before I got an Android phone with beaucoup storage I had an iPod Touch, and running Windows XP in Virtualbox was my only choice to use Apple’s lock-down-and-throw-away-the-key proprietary music database software.

  8. Hamous Avatar

Virtualbox is also a good way to test out other Linux distros without committing to a full install.

Good morning Hamsters. Started out with 60 at 6 and have slipped to 59 now. A pretty breezy north wind is making leaves fly across they yards, just a sample of what is to come. Got 0.60″ yesterday and overnight, so that will hold us for some time. Definitely today’s the day to get out the winter clothes.
The Chron today has many tributes and remembrance articles on Bum Phillips, all of which are excellent.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bum in the early 80s under quite unusual circumstances many would think, but to me it was a delightful time between horse owners. He was riding along on rounds with our mutual horse veterinarian, and when he stepped out of the vet’s truck I was amazed. He was a delightful gentleman who was interested in our horses and the particular reason for the vet visit. It appeared that he liked what he saw of them. Told him what our breeding philosophy was, and he nodded. Football only briefly was mentioned, and then from me appreciating his work with the Oilers and beyond. Told him we were Wisconsin transplants and Packers fans and thought he shared many coaching attributes with Vince Lombardi. We agreed that Vince was indeed a special man, and he was modest about his own attributes. I said he was in good company and smiled. So did he. He was at our barn all of 15 minutes with the vet, but I will never forget the encounter being horses first and football pretty much in passing.
Rest in peace, sir, in the company of your departed horses in endless green pastures.

Since it doesn’t look like QuickBooks is supported on Linux, I’m going to have to upgrade my XP. I don’t have to have the latest and greatest OS, and I’m leery of getting Microsoft’s latest and “greatest”, so I may just get the upgrade version of 7.0. I’m using 7.0 on one of my computers and have not had any problems.
I have to use QB, as my CPA has this awesome bookkeeper in his office that keeps pulling my butt out of the fire when I screw up, and she’s a QB guru.
I might still partition (which I’ve never done before) and play around on Ubuntu.

  12. squawkbox Avatar

I don’t mean to be nasty about our beloved windows XP, but sometimes ya just gotta upgrade in fact you might need to upgrade. I understand the hesitation to NOT do windows 8. Amazon and Tigerdirect have refurbed Windows 7 machines for sale CHEAP. I think Dell etal still offer machines with Win 7 on their websites.
Windows 7 is a lot more mature now as an operating system. There is some learning curve but man the hassles of dealing with saving documents to another partition and a few other peculiarities is worth the upgrade in speed alone and “internet” compatibility.
    Speaking of internet operability/compatibility
Here is something else to consider…… THE CLOUD. Software makers including Microsoft and Mac and all others are gravitating toward cloud computing. ADOBE has taken a huge step to offering their software only as a cloud based app. Intuit is moving in that directions too. Windows XP is not going to be able to handle those apps. In fact the move to internet appliances rather than a nice shiny desktop is coming and coming quick. Googles entry into the laptop market is a prime example of what i speak. The machine is designed to use all of the Google apps in the Cloud.

    Snip~
The winter war proved a costly victory for the Soviets. The Red Army lost approximately 126,875 dead or missing, 264,908 wounded and approximately 5,600 captured. In addition they lost about 2,268 armored vehicles. The Finns suffered greatly to preserve their freedom. In four months of combat, Finnish losses numbered approximately 26,662 dead and more than 39,000 wounded. A tiny nation of riflemen had held off the communist Red Giant.

It does however, present a bit of a dillema for some folks who have a privacy concern and I fully understand and respect that. Important to note that ChromeOS is a Linux based system. Linux on the whole is far more efficient code than is Windows. That said, MS as it stands now kind of has a lock on the professional world, but I suspect that we will see things migrate away from Windows in the near future.

Here’s an excellent write up on the defund / delay tactic Ted Cruz and others took towards Obamacare and the established Republican’s “improved” tactic over Cruz:

Andrew C. McCarthy has published a thoughtful and must-read editorial at National Review Online today concerning Obamacare. He argues that while the defund/delay strategy pushed by Senator Ted Cruz and others ultimately failed, the alternative approach, embraced by the GOP establishment, will also fail. In other words, repealing Obamacare through the legislative process (i.e., winning elections first and then fighting to dismantle the law) is simply not feasible in his view.
    Here’s why:

To repeal Obamacare on the establishment plan, the GOP needs sudden and sustained electoral success — despite the high hurdle of media bias. At least two federal election cycles, and more likely three or more (i.e., at least four years, and probably six or more), will be necessary. Obama, after all, will still be president for three more years and will never sign a repeal bill. Even if a Republican wins the White House in 2016, and even if Republicans by then have held the House and won the Senate, the GOP will not have overwhelming congressional majorities.
Furthermore, unlike Senate Republicans, Senate Democrats are unified and disciplined. Knowing the press is the wind at their backs, they are disposed to use every parliamentary privilege available to a minority to obstruct a repeal of Obamacare. Remember, Democrats unilaterally enacted Obamacare at a time when it was very unpopular and seemed likely to cost them dearly at the ballot box. But they are influenced by movement progressives to a far greater degree than the Tea Party influences Republicans. So important was socialized medicine to the Left that Democrats rammed Obamacare through, regardless of the likely electoral consequences. They are going to fight repeal to the death.
These obstacles alone are enough to make “uphill” an understatement. But that’s not the half of it. To buy the GOP establishment’s “repeal by winning elections” alternative, you also have to believe that Republicans are going to repeal a vast entitlement that has, by then, been on the books, with millions of Americans drawing subsidies, for at least four, and more likely six or more, years.

That last point is an important one. Question: When was the last time members of Congress repealed a massive new entitlement program millions of Americans benefited from? I can’t think of a single example. Can you? The problem with Big Government, then, is that once these programs are on the books, scaling them back is a veritable Sisyphean task — essentially impossible to accomplish.

“Sneaked” versus “snuck” is one of those classic grammarian conundrums that you’ll hear word enthusiasts debate all the time. Many people (including my sister) will say “snuck” without even slight hesitation, while supporters of “sneaked” (like me) will adamantly throw red flags on them, calling them out for improper use of our fine English language. But do we who say “sneaked” really have a case against the “snuck-ers” of the world?
Twenty years ago, maybe. Today, probably not.
“Sneaked” is the standard past tense and past participle form of “sneak.” Last night I sneaked into the movie theater. Unfortunately, the ticket taker sneaked in right behind me and tossed me out on my rear. What this means is that “sneaked” has always been accepted as the past tense of “sneak.” So if you use it, you will be abiding by the long-time language rules preached by most of our high school English teachers.
Of course, the rules of the English language are always evolving, and “snuck” has sneaked its way into our American lexicon. It’s considered the nonstandard past tense—basically meaning that “sneaked” is the preferred word-choice, but “snuck” is also acceptable. (English teachers across the nation just united against me—though if any start a “We Support Sneaked” Facebook page, I promise I’ll join.) I snuck into the meeting a few minutes late hoping no one would notice. The next week, my boss snuck a few dollars out of my paycheck. Even Merriam-Webster, who calls itself “America’s foremost publisher of language-related reference works,” doesn’t make the distinction in its online definition and fully recognizes “snuck” as a past tense and past participle of “sneak.”
In another 10-to-20 years, “snuck” may even become the preferred past tense form of “sneak”—who knows? But until then I suggest using “sneaked.” It will not only make you sound smarter, but it’ll also keep the English teachers from hunting me down like a movie-theater ticket-taker.

Good morning Hamsters. Chilly 43 this morning at 6 with plenty of dew on the moors, all under the watchful face of a gorgeous Hunter’s Moon on her way to bed. Later the Sun’s fiery chariot on the horizon turned it red and gold and laced the clouds above with gold for all too brief moments. Then his radiant face rose, and the dew became a sea of diamonds. All transpired in the deep stillness of early morning as if all creatures great and small were spellbound by the show.
Late fall and winter mornings grant spectacular viewing in clear skies, and the trees that have surrendered their leaves make interesting shapes and patterns in the light just after Dawn’s rosy fingers swell into the red/gold horizon’s magnificence. All the trees around here other than the live oaks seem to be in the overture stage of dropping leaves now, nothing in earnest yet, awaiting blustery north winds to commence sending them bouncing and flying hither and yon. This will happen whenever Nature decides it is time, perhaps later than usual owing to our drought conditions earlier this year as happened in 2011’s very late and wonderfully colorful cascades.

As I recall, Maureen got a pretty good notion about Obama’s character way back before the 2008 election when she made a comment about the size of his ears in a column. The substance behind her comment seemed to deal with characteristics that could be easily caricatured. He subsequently talked to her about that comment and asked her not to do it again, as he was sensitive about his ears. She duly reported it in a following piece containing her observation that running for high office makes a candidate vulnerable to all sorts of unflattering commentary, and he ought to be ready for that. She also was a bit surprised to be asked not to do it again. Methinks that she got his number after that incident. I sure did.

The stainless steel cooking grill is still in excellent shape and the shell is still solid. This year, for the first time, I replace the burner, the electronic ignition, and the bottom grill that holds the ceramic for about $200. Beats the $750 I paid 10 years ago. As long as I can buy replacement parts I’ll keep doing that (ain’t the innernets wonderful?). The key seems to be baking out all the residue immediately after cooking.

I bought my Gumby Dammit, Z71 4X4 grill in 2000, replaced the burners, once 2003?(went from SS to cast iron) replaced the SS grills once about half way through and replaced the firebricks for the first time a year ago. It’s a big 85,000 BTU SS three burner with an 10,000 BTU infrared burner on the back side to use with the spit, cooks chicken and pork loin that is outta’ this world.
I did fix the wimpy side stove burner that would NOT get hot enough to cook fried fish or okre. I replaced the girly-man ½ PSI regulator with an adjustable 0-10 PSI one like I have on my turkey cooker. When I crank it up it sounds like an F-4 on afterburners. 😀

But in the end it is always non-stainless (and even stainless), critical parts cause the final failure, such as burner brackets, etc.
Understand, Ms. Fay utilizes the grill 100-150 times a year.

We bought a very nice NG grill about 5 years ago from Sears that just now is requiring the flame deflectors be replaced. It has a high Btu burner, a searing burner and it cost 890 bucks. No regrets.
The grill before that lasted about 22 months @ $350.

    Fay here…..
I think Shannon just had a myocardial infarction at the thought of spending $750 for grill.

I should elaborate, that included installation and running the gas line from the meter. I really like not having to worry about propane.

    USA natural gas beats everything

It is great for cooking, heating the house and water, and for use as a transportation fuel, it just does not work well for aviation due to the weight of the fuel containers.
For piston engines, it works great and does not cause the carbon build up that gasoline or diesel will. Gas engines tend to last 2-3 times longer.

Yes it does but as with everything else there are draw backs. LNG has about 75 % of the BTU’s of Gasoline even less for Diesels. So if you have 100 HP now you have 75 HP, not a big deal if plan ahead. The bad part is that a tank that is larger than a 25 gallon gas tank will give you about 80 miles in a 1/2 pick-up, I know this because we had one at work for a long time. The best use of it is going to be local fleet operations that have their own fuel pumps. That said, it would be great for long-haul truckers, IF they made the tanks real big, (not really a problem for a vehicle that grosses 87,000 Lbs) and there were a lot of truck stops that carried it. I think that it could happen in 10-15 years if we can compress enough of it.

#102 SD: There is a CNG service in Houston that caters to the local freight market right now. Some of these rigs are even making the Hou/Dallas run on CNG. The power issue is very easy to overcome by increasing the boost on the turbochargers that are on most diesel rigs now, just an adjustment to the computer and you are good to go. You are correct in that the overall mpg will go down using gas, however on a miles per BTU basis gas is cheaper than gasoline or diesel.

Good news and not so good news. Packers beat the Browns 31-13 and played with numerous replacement starters for injured first stringers. More injuries during the game, the worst with Finlay carted off the field on a backboard after an awkward tackle resulting in slamming his helmet into the turf. No word on the nature of the injury other than he has feeling in his extremities. Browns players were huddled around the edge of the Packers huddled around the medical staff. Scary. Yikes.
Chiefs held off the Texans 17-16 in a valiantly played game by the Texans and a very mobile Case. Encouraging. Injuries to Foster and Cushing, JJ received a hard blow to the ribs but came back in. Most discouraging.
Mainly watched the Packers and switched back and forth to check on the Texans since they played at the same time.

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) – Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement, returned home to a rousing welcome in Texas on Saturday after his attempt to derail Obamacare with a shutdown of the federal government led to sharp criticism of his tactics as reckless and futile.
“After two months in Washington, it’s great to be back in America,” Cruz joked in speaking to a crowd of about 750 people in a packed downtown San Antonio hotel ballroom.
Cruz was greeted with an eight-minute standing ovation in an appearance organized by the Texas Federation of Republican Women. People in attendance, many of them wearing red to show their support for keeping Texas a conservative-leaning state, lined up to greet him.
