I’m getting ready to leave for all my appointments today. I was up late, trying to get everything ready for OH3 this morning (she was gone all last week) so that she can get stuff done while I’m gone. Hubby’s still trying to deal with his broken truck, so he’s a little frazzled, too.
So much to talk about:
Kerry yachting while Egypt overturns a dictator – and the attempted cover-up.
Egyptian’s signs downing Obama and his support of Morsi & Co. And the administrations desire to “not take sides”. When the heckfahr has that ever been a problem?? Does he think the Egyptian military “acted stupidly”?
And I hear that the CNN coverage of the Egyptian situation is wissing some of them off.
His wife suddenly taking ill. Conveniently timed, new wealth opportunity for Kerry, or true need for prayer?
The plane crash. Actually, I’m tired of the over-reporting on this. Plane crashes and hurricanes get way too much coverage, IMHO.
And the whole sexuality of New York politics – Weiner and Spitzer?
Talk amongst yourselves.

Watergate broke with a burglary.
Burglars stole three computers and broke into the firm’s file cabinets. But silver bars, video equipment and other valuables were left untouched
At least it didn’t have a body count.

as far as her spouse is concerned: whose husband once served in Vietnam, he is a lying, back stabbing SOB, who admitted to crimes violating the UCMJ, yet he was never prosecuted. He was for serving in VN before he was against it. -
The firm Schulman & Mathias represents Aurelia Fedenisn, a former investigator at the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General. In recent weeks, she raised a slew of explosive allegations against the department and its contractors ranging from illicit drug use, soliciting sexual favors from minors and prostitutes and sexual harassment.
“It’s a crazy, strange and suspicious situation,” attorney Cary Schulman told The Cable. “It’s clear to me that it was somebody looking for information and not money. My most high-profile case right now is the Aurelia Fedenisn case, and I can’t think of any other case where someone would go to these great lengths to get our information.”
According to the KDFW report, the firm was the only suite burglarized in the high-rise office building and an unlocked office adjacent was left untouched.
The State Department, which has repeatedly disputed Fedenisn’s allegations, denied any involvement in the incident. “Any allegation that the Department of State authorized someone to break into Mr. Schulman’s law firm is false and baseless,” spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
After assessing the surveillance footage, Schulman said he believed the motivations were likely political, but did not suspect department involvement. “It wasn’t professional enough,” he said. “It is possible that an Obama or Hillary supporter feels that I am unfairly going after them. And the timing of this is right after several weeks of very public media attention so it seems to me most likely that the information sought is related to that case. I don’t know for sure and I want the police to do their work.” -
Good Monday morning to all in Hamsterville! I did not rise and shine this morning, but my cup of coffee should cause my eyes to start focusing in a bit.

The Asiana crash reeks of incompetence. Someone in the cockpit should have noticed if they were coming in too low. I read last night that passengers had reported they could tell they were coming in too low just by looking out the windows. If the pilot was still in training, that means his more experienced instructor must have been in the cockpit. I heard a pilot talking to Edd Hendee on KSEV this morning, saying Korean and possibly other Asian airlines have specific training to get their crew members to overcome their “politeness” and speak up when they see something being done wrong.
-
Raining now! My first errand was going to be to haul water to my adopted oak, but I may not have to now.
-
It’s hard to tell looking out the windows at SFO if you’re too low. The runway threshold is a few feet from the bay, so the difference in altitude might be less than 25 feet, which is really difficult to reckon when you’re looking at water through a scratchy window with lots of finger/face prints and you’re going about 150kt.
That said, the 25 feet obviously makes a huge difference, but a passenger would have a hard time telling. -
Yabbut Pyro they weren’t zooming in toward the runway at the normal speed either.
-
It’s obviously Bush’s fault (the crash), but thanks to Obama, there was only one fatality from the crash and only one killed by the crack team of first responders. I guess you could say that half of the fatalities were caused by the Obama team.

The United States strongly supports the great strides many African countries have made to ensure good governance, rule of law, and respect for human rights. We commend the progress they have made to broaden political participation and improve governance, and will remain a steady partner as they continue to work to strengthen electoral processes, ensure transparency and accountability in government, and provide security while respecting and protecting universal rights and fundamental freedoms.
In addition to our ongoing diplomacy and our efforts in multilateral institutions, in 2012 the United States – through the U.S. Department of State and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – provided more than $292 million in support for these efforts, including in the following priority areas:
…
In Kenya, the $53 million Yes Youth Can program empowers nearly one million Kenyan youth to use their voices for advocacy in national and local policy-making, while also creating economic opportunities. In advance of Kenya’s March 2013 general elections, Yes Youth Can’s “My ID My Life” campaign helped 500,000 youth obtain National identification cards, a prerequisite to voter registration, and carried out a successful nationwide campaign with Kenyan civic organizations to elicit peace pledges from all presidential aspirants. -
Yabbut Pyro they weren’t zooming in toward the runway at the normal speed either.
How fast were they going? Normal landing speed for an airliner is ~125kt.
Cruising speed is ~525kt. -
the 25 feet obviously makes a huge difference
The difference between 60 people with broken backs and not!
-
The NTSB lady said it was supposed to be at 132 kts at that point and it was going substantially slower. “Way slower” were the words she used.
She said at about 1 second before impact they decided they needed to abort landing and come back around for a second try.
Too late. -
according to my handy unit conversion app, 132kt = 152mph = 244km/h = 68m/s

How fast were they going?
It has been reported, but I don’t recall. So slow the engines stalled right before they crashed, I think.
-
#24 – just semantics but CRUCIAL semantics – aircraft engines do not “stall” – the airframe does (aka aircraft begins to DROP)
-
Thanks for the correction, Katfish. I sort of knew that but phrased it wrong. Lost lift; began to drop. Of course they didn’t have far to fall by then.
-
Anyone else getting any rain this morning? Doppler 13 looks like everyone on the west side should be. We’ve had 3 waves come through so far. Reading the gauge with binoculars, it looks like we have about 1.5″ already.
-
gettin a slight / light precip in Katy
I’ll take what I can get -
aircraft engines do not “stall” – the airframe does
Actually they DO.
Of course in this case, the aircraft did stall, (it was going too slow to stay aloft, not enougn lift for the weight). -
#29 – AH – never heard the term ‘stall’ employed vis a vis the actual engines…………I’ve heard flameout / power loss etc
-

In other news, I got an inch of rain at my place. In selected spots. Part of the garden, where the plants are were soaked, where we pulled up the crop dry. The place looks like someone came around with a garden hose and watered different areas. The chicken coup was soaked and the burn pile dry. Darndest thing I’ve ever seen. ?? Talk about selective rain.

I’m still here. Wonder how TT came out today with her hip problem.
-
I still came out with a hip problem.
Lovely took me in this morning. I started that serious ache last night that meant bad news. I iced it down as I fell asleep. The chiropractor adjusted my back and then took x-rays. I torqued the hip when I tried to go from standing to my chair, dammit. Lovely then took me by the bank so I could make a deposit, then back home. She went to pet Barf Kitty and the next thing I hear is “Mom, she’s bleeding from her mouth!” Quick phone call to the local vet, explaining my need to go to the dentist and also bring in the cat. Lovely helped me load the cat in the car, bless her little heart. At the vet’s I had to wait for someone to come get the cat; I finally waylaid an employee passing by my car and about ten minutes later was able to offload the cat so I could then crutch in s-l-o-w-l-y. Waited for the vet, keeping BK calmed down while the dogs made lots of noise. The vet gave her a quick look, and BK got VERY upset when she tried to pull back her lips to look at the mouth. I left the cat in her care, as they were going to have to sedate her to examine and treat her. I left to go to the dentist. I found that the baby tooth with the problem now feels like the Grand Canyon when the temp filling is removed. It will have to be extracted and we talked about my options. New filling in what little is left and back to the vet. Turns out Barf Kitty cut herself, probably scratching, and it got infected. It wasn’t as bad as it looked, thank goodness. She’s a lot perkier, now that she’s had some antibiotics and had the infection removed. Made another bank deposit run since we got a big check in the mail, and went by the pet place for something for the cat. Back home, and I feel like I’ve been kicked in the butt and I’m starting to get some real uncomfortable spasms in my hip. I’m sitting on cold packs trying to get some work done.
Tomorrow, I don’t have any appointments. I’m moving as little as possible. Wednesday morning, my sister takes me back to see what the x-rays show. -

Breathing oxygen-enriched liquid is an old idea, but it’s got a few flaws. One of those flaws being the removal of carbon dioxide from the bloodstream. A simpler problem is how to breathe it without gagging. Wouldn’t it be far easier if you just didn’t need to breathe at all?
Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital thought so, so they created microparticles that can be injected into your bloodsteam and oxygenate it. Even if you can’t/aren’t breathing. And it can keep people alive for 15 to 30 minutes. Think about that. At worst, it’s 2/3 an episode of Seinfeld. At best, you could start a second. My question is how does this solve he first problem proposed by oxygenated water? Don’t you need to inhale in order to exhale in order to get rid of the CO2 in the body? Still, this is a pretty cool development.

Good Christian examples of sacrifice and service for their God and for their fellow man frequently, if not always, have deep results.
The “Sisters of Maadi,” as they are known locally, are nuns of the order of St. Charles Borromeo, and they have been tending to Cairo’s sick and injured for more than a century. While some elderly German nuns remain, the sisters are now predominantly Egyptian, Coptic in ethnicity and rite. Among Cairenes, the sisters are best known for their health clinic, which treats approximately 200,000 impoverished Egyptians annually.
Each morning, the line of patients outside this diminutive but pristine clinic stretches down the street. The clinic’s patients — women in the hijab and niqab; young men with broken limbs; toddlers and the elderly — are 90 percent Muslim. For many of these Muslims, Christianity is strongly linked, if not synonymous, with the West, even though not all Westerners identify themselves as Christian. Were it not for encounters like these, Muslim concepts of Christians would be almost exclusively informed by their understanding of America — shaped by American film and television, which are often deeply at odds with Egyptian values, and by Middle Eastern journalism, which tends to present America unfavorably. These daily encounters with the sisters are therefore vital to American interests, although most of America’s people and policymakers have no idea that the Sisters of Maadi exist.
(snip)
Inside the clinic a mother and father hold their son, perhaps three years of age, who has sustained serious burns on his shoulder and back after spilling boiling water on himself. Sister Petra tells the mother that she must be more careful. “It was God’s will,” the mother replies. Later, in a conversation that bounces from Arabic to German to English, Sister Petra says that too often she sees the same patients back time and again after they failed to take sufficient precautions. Clenching her fists with a smile, she says, “I want to shake them when they say this, but I love them.” This love is reciprocated by the predominantly Muslim community that surrounds the convent.By the exemplary example Sisters of Maadi, not only do many Muslims (undoubtedly millions of them by now) have a much better picture about what it means to be Christian but they also get a much better understanding of true doctrine. In this case, that God has endowed all in humanity the power of choice and that their choices bring specific results.

And don’t forget this:The convent also has a preschool for Egyptian children, three-quarters of whom are Muslim. It is run by Sister Regina, who shares Sister Petra’s diminutive stature and kindhearted but firm approach. Like her students, she is Egyptian, but she teaches in German, which seems to enhance the natural command she has of the classroom. These students will have better academic opportunities than most of their peers, which is why Christian schools tend to be highly regarded in the Muslim world. “The odds of these kids becoming radicalized are minimal,” says Doug.

A diverse coalition of religious leaders, including the presiding bishop of the LDS Church, signed an open letter to “all Americans” saying they are not done fighting against health care reform’s birth control mandate and its infringement on religious liberty.
Acknowledging they don’t all agree on religious teachings about contraception, they are united against government requiring any faith or its followers to violate those teachings.
More than 100 national religious leaders and scholars released their letter last Tuesday titled “Standing Together for Religious Freedom,” calling on the Obama administration and Congress to respect conscience rights and religious freedom.
“While the mandate is a specific offense, it represents a greater fundamental breach of conscience by the federal government,” the letter stated. “The (Health and Human Services) is coercive and puts the administration in the position of defining — or casting aside — religious doctrine. This should trouble every American.”And Godspeed to this opposition.

“Progressives” are all atwitter about Dustin Hoffman’s story about when he discovered how shallow he truly is. I, for one, never had that problem. I have been surrounded by interesting and strong women all my life and have never missed out on knowing any of them, and I didn’t even have to dress up in drag!
And I’m waging a “war on women”??? -
