Eagle Open Comments

On Sunday, I gave my eldest son an additional name: Soaring Eagle.
We held a Court of Honor for him and six other new Eagle Scouts.

Of the other six, I have known three of them since they were five years old. The others I met when they were in 5th grade. All seven of them are among the finest kids you’d ever hope to know. Two are National Merit Scholar finalists; all will be attending college next year. Looking at that group is enough to give you hope for the future.

What happens to a Scout? For every 100 boys who join Scouting, records indicate that:

RARELY will one be brought before the juvenile court system
2 will become Eagle Scouts
17 will become future Scout volunteers
12 will have their first contact with a church
1 will enter the clergy
5 will earn their church award
18 will develop a hobby that will last through their adult life
8 will enter a vocation that was learned through the merit badge system
1 will use his Scouting skills to save his own life
1 will use his Scouting skills to save the life of another person

Scouting’s alumni record is equally impressive. A recent nation- wide survey of high schools revealed the following information:

85% of student council presidents were Scouts
89% of senior class presidents were Scouts
80% of junior class presidents were Scouts
75% of school publication editors were Scouts
71% of football captains were Scouts

Scouts also account for:

64% of Air Force Academy graduates
68% of West Point graduates
70% of Annapolis graduates
72% of Rhodes Scholars
85% of F.B.I. agents
26 of the first 29 astronauts

I could not possibly be more proud of my son right now.

    Today’s Eagle Scouts have a very big job, saving this country. And payiing my Social Security.

    I thought getting my Eagle plaque was about the most impressive thing I had done. I went to a rustic scout camp in central Texas several summers and made friends that continue through today. I learned about the outdoors, nature, tying knots, working to build things. At night we watched the stars and learned about the constellations. I can’t think of anyplace I could have learned all those skills as a youngster and had fun doing it. Congratulations to the new generation of Eagles – it’s a great brotherhood (which probably explains why the left is trying to destroy it).

    Good morning Hamsters. Quick change weather from last night. Down to 58, and the wind is getting going with great vigor, likely to be more fierce than yesterday. Overcast thickens but does not give moisture at ground level. Some crows work hard to fly into the north wind and make headway. Live oak leaves and pollen fly and swirl across the land, alternately sweeping and depositing on the yard and sidewalk.
    It is March in its lion suit today across the middle of the country, but we fortunately do not bear the brunt of blizzards across the Great Lakes and north central states. Spouse’s brother in Madison, WI said last night their forecast was for strong winds and a foot of snow. We asked if they would like to take a quick trip here to escape winter for a while. 🙂

    Ms Simple is a Brownie Girl Scout Leader and I am in the process of becoming a Merit Badge Counselor (Radio & Morse Code).
    I have been escorting Ms Simple and Angel to Girl Scout Meetings for some time and I am a “Do-Dad” in the Girl Scout Organization, which means I get to do all the heavy lifting stuff. The meetings were at the same church as the Boy Scouts on the same nights. I have observed the scouts for quite some time and their leader told me that all of his scouts are at least A&B students. Most are on the Honor Roll at school.
    I do not donate to the United Fund, but rather I choose to directly donate to three charities and one of them is the Boy Scouts.
    Congradulations to your son.

    That would be this coming Monday, btw.

    I’m busy trying to make some urgent calls (it was busy just now, so I have a quick sec). I get a phone call from the Blood Center (I gave blood Sunday).
    RRRINNNG
    “Hello, this is Tedtam.”
    “Hello, this **** from the Regional Blood Center…”
    “Is this urgent? I’m really busy right now.”
    “Oh! No, it isn’t. I just wanted to thank you for your donation. Each donation could save……” /going into her complete spiel
    “Okay, thank you. I have to go. I’m really busy right now.”
    Just before my finger hit the hang up button, I heard an exasperated “UH!”
    I mean, I asked if it was urgent, told her I was busy, and she said it wasn’t urgent.

    No, you were not. It was completely inappropriate for the ditzoid on the other end to continue to waste your time after you asked if it was urgent, and then made it explicitly clear that you were extremely busy, ie did not have time to listen to meaningless drivel.
    Anytime I have to leave my number I make it clear that I do not want to hear from them unless there is an emergency.

    Do y’all know of any places other than PV rental for work trucks? We have one reserved with PV, but it would be nice to have other options. He’d need a one ton w/gooseneck hitch.
    The other truck places are box vans, for moving and such, or don’t have the hitch or big enough engine.

    Call me uncouth (I never had any couth before anyway) I figure anytime anyone calls me they are entering into my personal domain. Depending on what I am doing or how I feel they are only welcome there at MY desecration & judgement.
    Yanno those messages that warn you that “this call may be recorded/monitored “? I think I will put on a recording that warns that the caller may be hung up on at any time during our “conversation” with no promise of me returning their call and me possibly ignoring their next attempt to disturb my tranquility.
    This is not being rude at all it is a matter of proper time management and time is a gift to me to be used wisely.

    Like the cop said, “Anybody that does any kind of crime, breaks into houses or goes and robs anybody they basically they’re taking their own life on the line”. Or, if you use a toy gun in a bank robbery.

    The employee instead dropped to the floor behind the teller stations and began crawling toward another bank employee, shouting for help. As she was crawling, the affidavit says, she saw Oliva lean over the teller station and point his handgun at her. She grabbed a plastic trash can and tossed it over the teller counter toward Oliva; however, Oliva had moved around the end of the teller stations and was directly behind her.
    The second bank employee, who was in an office, heard the shouts for help. He saw Oliva pointing a handgun at the first bank employee, the affidavit says, and retrieved a Smith & Wesson .357 revolver. He fired two rounds at Oliva. The first shot struck Oliva in the jaw, according to the affidavit, and he turned and started toward the bank’s front doors.
    No money was taken during the attempted robbery.

    And since the employee had a CC license, it looks like he’s in the clear.

    National Black Chamber of Commerce president said he was “duped” by Obama. He now states that TBO wants socialism, doesn’t care about the Constitution and a budget, and that he’s incompetent.
    He saw the black skin, and that was all. I’d say this man was a complete idiot, except that he’s now publicly admitting that he shouldn’t have voted for our first black president.

    Given how blacks have been used and pandered to by the Democrats over the years, I can see how they would vote for and actively support Bronco simply because of the color of his skin.
    There are now (finally) what appear to be cracks in the facade, both in the black community and in the media. Not enough (yet) to matter much, but maybe a start.

    So do you routinely desecrate your telephone? 🙂 Me, it doesn’t matter what I am doing. I routinely hang up on unsolicited callers. If it is someone being really nice, I advise that I do not have time to talk to them before I hang up.

    I experimented one day when a telemarketer called. I put the phone down and let him keep talking. I was making dinner or chasing kids or something for a while. Came back later, and the guy was still talking. I just hung up.

    Speaking of healthcare advances, my daughter the Critical Care Dialysis nurse says their new portable dialysis machines are straight out of Star Wars.
    But only an engineer would design these heavy machines with casters that cannot smoothly negotiate the gap between the elevator and the building floor sills. She has been injured trying to keep the machine from falling on her or others entering/exiting elevators – a design flaw found on the older machines as well.

    BSA is a great organization… despite some of the shenanigans that go on at the national level, SHAC is a great council. We thoroughly enjoyed Camp-O-Ree this past weekend at Camp Strake. May be the last time we will camp there. Word is that Chevron has purchased the property.
