Anniversary of Evil Open Comments

Cardinal DiNardo asked that the following letter to the faithful be read at all masses this past weekend:

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
This weekend, we remember as a nation Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man of non-violence, a minister and preacher of overcoming racism and living in harmony because of the “content of our character.” We pray and work that his dream may be realized.
On Monday, we will inaugurate President Obama for a second term and pray for him and the newly sworn in Congress that he and they will enact laws and carry out policies in our country that enhance the common good and protect the human person, and simultaneously work for a deepening of genuine peace founded on justice in the world at large.
On Tuesday, we will remember the somber 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade, that legalized abortion in our country, a decision that has unleashed the death of over 50 million unborn children, nameless to many but not to the Lord, and caused great brokenness to the mothers and fathers and extended families of those same children. The Gospels are exact in describing Jesus Christ’s work beginning at his Baptism in the Jordan as bringing a new reconciliation that does not “break the bruised reed or extinguish the smoldering wick.” The Catholic Church remembers January 22nd each year as a day of voluntary fast and abstinence; there is a special Mass in the Missal with its proper Scriptural Readings assigned for that day. I ask, most especially this year, that all of our priests, clergy, religious and faithful make a major effort to stop that day, to pray more fervently for a rebirth of a culture of life, to fast and abstain from food as a mark of solidarity for all those affected personally by the scourge of abortion, and to make space and time to participate in prayer at Mass.
May God’s blessings descend mightily on our country that we will be promoters of peace, defenders of life for every person, and dedicated servants to the civil and religious liberty of all our citizens that has marked us as a nation from our beginnings.
May we continue to celebrate this Year of Faith by enhancing our knowledge of Faith and deepening our gaze at the face of Jesus Christ, God’s mercy shown visibly to the world!
Sincerely in Christ,
Daniel Cardinal DiNardo
Archbishop of Galveston-Houston

We should all do as the Cardinal suggests in praying that President Obama and all those in our government act with wisdom in governing our great country in a manner that we all, individually and collectively, achieve our greatest purpose while ensuring that the most innocent and vulnerable among us receive the protections that they deserve.
We must move toward a society that is in line with God’s will, as described by Dr King, where we judge people by their character and not by the color of their skin.
Today marks the 40th anniversary of one of the darkest days in the history of our great Republic, the day the Supreme Court handed down its decision in the Roe v. Wade case. The US Supreme Court took upon itself to strip the innocent unborn of all rights granted to them under not only the US Constitution, but Natural Law as well. That decision represents the single greatest unresolved stain on our Republic.
May God have mercy on our souls.

I do not for the life of me understand why the Cardinal’s followers consistently vote for the same party that espouses the policies that the Church abhors. One of life’s mysteries that I’ll never figure out I guess. As to those policies, and others as well, would it do any good at all if the Church were to lead its followers to live their lives in the manner in which it suggests and just leave the rest of the people alone? I know that outreach is also a principle, but it might seem to me that a program of attraction rather than promotion would be appropriate. A whole lot of us might be better off if others would just leave them alone, and I’m addressing our government as well as other “do gooders.” Not being critical, just asking.

It depends on which Catholics you’re talking about. Hispanic Catholics voted for Bronco. White Catholics voted for RMoney. If you look at “church-going” Catholics and don’t count those that come to church twice a year but still identify themselves as Catholic, they vote even more conservative.

My husband swears by an inch of sweet red wine in a small glass, must be not less than 12% alc by volume, his favorite is Sutter’s Home, at his bedtime, to improve sleep. The red wine was recommended by his cardiologist a while back, and the sleep effect was just an unexpected bonus.
Now in the meantime, I have read that a small amount of any alcohol every day is as beneficial for the circulatory system as red wine seems to be.

My grease burn is better today. It was a large burn, and right on the spot where I rest my arm while mousing. I kept ice on it for hours last night, and before I went to bed I put some aloe vera with lidocaine on it, then covered it with a large gauze pad and wrapped it with a reusable wrap. My biggest fear was it rubbing on the sheets at night – that would have been unbearable!
This morning, I unwrapped my arm, and I could tell that the ice pack wasn’t quite big enough to cover the whole burn. There’s about a 1″ square spot just above my wrist that’s still pretty red and tender. The rest of the burn is skin-color, but sensitive.
That spot on my wrist is still the spot I use while working on the computer, but with the gauze and the wrap around it, I should be able to work.
    There’s less whimpering today.

Something seems to have been lost along the way. We established a Republic — a form of government in which leaders are elected for a specific period by the majority of the population (via the Electoral College), and laws are passed for the benefit of the entire republic, rather than a select aristocracy. In an ideal republic, leaders are selected from among the working citizenry, serve the republic for a defined period, then return to their work, never to serve again.
The key concepts are: the importance of civic virtue, the benefits of universal political participation, the dangers of corruption, the need for separate powers and a healthy reverence for the rule of law.
From these concepts, one value stands above all the others- political liberty. Political liberty entails not only freedom from government interference in private affairs, it also places great emphasis on self-discipline and self-reliance. Political liberty keeps government out of individuals’ lives (unless to do this threatens the republic as a whole), it also prevents the government from becoming a guardian to its individuals. The role of government in a republic is to safeguard the collective republic.
I believe that the entire DC crowd needs to go back and take Civics 101.

They have no problem murdering the innocent, harmless, never been given the chance to do wrong unborn baby; but can not bring themselves to cast a vote in favor of ridding society of a virulent menace who preys on the weak and makes everybody’s life miserable. By contrast, Democrats owe their power to the vilest dregs of humanity — corrupt union goons, Marxist academics, criminals, drug addicts, sexual perverts and race hustlers — who have no respect for the values of decent, honest people.

People will only fight when it is clear that their existence is in imminent peril and all hope for a future is lost; ergo they have nothing to lose.
I could get some argument about that, but I just do not see our current state as being that dire. It does not mean it could not get that way. Anything is possible.
The popular support amoungst the general population for the American Revolution did not run that deep. About a third supported the revolution, another third opposed it, and the remainder did not care or wanted to be left alone. It was amazing to many how much the Continental Army had grown in size just twenty years after the end of the revolution.
The French Revolution of the same era was closer to one inspired by the complete loss of hope. The middle class was eroded and the poor were living wretched lives; therefore you get the spectacle of the mass population storming the Bastille. The problem with the French Revolution was they traded a royal despot for despotism by committee and then despotism by a single meglomaniac.

First off, let me say that I am a hypocrit on the this issue. I carried illegally when I went to
night classes at UofH. I armed my oldest daughter when she went. I did not then and still do not view the random crazy as being the greatest threat. It is the muggers and rapists in the massive parking lots that pose the greatest threat.
Luckily for both of us, neither had to use our respective pistols. I never let anyone know that I was carrying and I never waved it around.
I am not sure how good an idea it would be to arm some of the folks that I went to school with at the time. There was a fair number of loons and just as many immature idiots to boot. Worse….I have seen many young men fire the 1911A1 as part of training in the USMC. We would fam-fire (familiarize) the recruits with the .45 pistol as part of their 14 day Marksmanship Training. They would get to fire 15 rounds (3 magazines) at 25 yards.
Sarge…the safest place to stand was in front of the targets. There was enough lead in the ground in front of the targets to qualify the area as a Superfund Site.
It is hard to imagine the average college student doing much better with little more than the shooting practice done for his/her CWP. Add a Triple Vente Latte with three shots of expresso (or two Red Bulls) and a little adrenaline; the projectiles will be flying everywhere but the right place.
Of course the unintended consequence would be that meetings with Professors and Faculty Advisors would be a lot more cordial. It would add a new dimension to negotiating with a professor over a disputed test score.

Good riddance, I can’t stand that IDIOT! He’s the one that used to make fun of Dan Patrick after Dan lost his station to Clear Channel! He was a liberal until he found out that money was to be made as a conservative, presto chango now he’s a conservative, wink, wink!

I did not imply (or mean to imply) that CCL arms or enables College Students on campus, rather I was pointing out some of the shortcomings of arming the students.
Keep in mind that I freely confessed my own hypocrisy on the issue. I illegally carried my small pistol when I had night classes. It was illegal because my time in college predated CCL. My oldest daughter had her CCL when she went, but I advised her to carry a purse weapon. I also told her to get to class early so she did not have to park on the far west parking lot and to walk with others when she left class.
Of course…arming students would probably do a lot to increase Grade Point Averages.

You are normally an intelligent man, Simple.
Which makes it even more of a mystery that you do not confess your ignorance while confessing your hypocrisy.
NOBODY IS PROPOSING TO ARM STUDENTS.
WE ARE PROPOSING THAT PERSONS WHO ALREADY GO ARMED EVERYWHERE THEY CHOOSE TO TRAVEL, DO SO FREELY AND RESPONSIBLY WITH PROPER LICENSING AND TRAINING, BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO EXERCISE THAT RIGHT WHEN THEY VENTURE ONTO A COLLEGE CAMPUS.
Even if they are college students.

I simply lose patience with people who are too frikkin ignorant to understand what is being proposed, or are against it and cannot come up with a logical argument against it so they attempt to conjure up images in the public mind of Bluto Blutarsky stumbling around the campus of Faber College firing a Colt Peacemaker into the air like a drover on his first night in Abilene.

Why, are you a Hendee fan? I admire Ed enormously BUT he drove me nuts with his speaking style. It’s now been so long since I last heard him that I can’t remember exactly what it was he does, but something on the order of “I mean, you know” in every sentence.

Oh and I too admire Ed Hendee but I’ve never been all that fond of his show,….That said he is a 1000 times better than Chris Baker and the Matt/Mack?,…(not sure about the name) guy in the morning.

  89. Tedtam Avatar

Never trusted Baker. And I wish he’d learn to use adverbs. His “take it serious” was driving me nuts. And his fawning over Dan when I used to hear him ridicule him mercilessly always got under my skin, too.
On “the other station,” he could have easily just kept to his program without taking jabs at Dan. To Dan’s credit, I don’t ever remember him making of Baker. He might have, I just never head it. I like when Dan updates the news from Austin, but I wish he was a more exciting speaker. Some days, it’s a real struggle to keep my interest.

On Monday, we will inaugurate President Obama for a second term and pray for him and the newly sworn in Congress that he and they will enact laws and carry out policies in our country that enhance the common good and protect the human person, and simultaneously work for a deepening of genuine peace founded on justice in the world at large.

I really like that. In my own prayers I add to bless our leaders to serve those whom they govern. Here I see a huge deficiency in President Obama. He acts and governs as though he is above others. He sees social good for by using government to dictate to the masses. Hardly the humble type.

    Now that’s excellence.

I used to really like Dan. not so much anymore. I like ed Hendee but I understand why he’s not on as much anymore. Mac is good but quite low on information and insights. After the elections I had a strong desire to get intelligent feedback on the outcome and how to move forward. So I channelled Bill Bennett and I’ve been listening a lot to him lately. His personality doesn’t exactly keep me awake early mornnig but his smarts makes up for that.

It was a little after one that I first heard of the shooting at lone Star. Our campus was not put on lockdown but advice was to be extra vigilant with the students and transferring between classes. According to the Houston Chronicle, about five surrounding campuses in Aldine ISD were placed in full lockdown. That means nobody leaves the room for any circumstance unless there’s a direct instruction from an administrator. Can’t even pee if you have to.
This fortunately went well the rest of the day. The student knew something was up but to avoid panic they were not told about he incident. The busses arrived slightly later than normal but no big deal. I knew by that time at least one suspect was apprehended.
Niki told me her mother called on her cell and asked if she was OK. “OK about what?” “There was a shooting near Bush International Airport, are you OK?” You gotta love mothers. Niki and all ehre were, of course, OK. One young man which attends church with us left the campus where the shooting ocurred about 1/2 hour before it happened. (/phew). Another young also from church attends that campus but we believe she did not go that day. We’d definitely hear about it if someone from church got hurt. Thank the lord there were only wounded people with no fatalities.
Niki and I talked to our kids about what happened. As of around 8:30 pm they did not know anything. Niki started crying during family prayer as she thanked Heavenly Father for the safety of our friends and so after the prayer was done the kids asked why she was crying. She then mentioned the shooting and I said it was two people who got into an argument and one started shooting. Both Niki and I told the kids how stupid that person is; that you NEVER use a gun in an argument. “But Grandpa is an expert and he carries a gun, ” Kason said as an example of how not to be stupid. So I added that Grandpa would never use a gun just because he was mad at someone but he absolutely would to protect himself and those around him. Although not mentioned, Grandma would too.
Our house will keep the vicitms in our prayers as well as the perp / perps (?). May everyone learn from this.

“Peace in our time.” is forever associated with Neville Chamberlain’s stupid appeasement of Hitler for anyone old enough to recall WWII or anyone with the brains to be even a casual student of history.
