Good morning Hamsters. The rain has finally left the area but all is still damp. Cool 52 at 6:30, only 1/10″ of mist and drizzle overnight, and a west breeze stirs under a partly cloudy sky that lets starlilght through once again. We must make the most of the dry spell that is forecast to be all too brief. Seems that the Old Farmer’s Almanac prediction for winter here, though delayed a bit, is on the mark for wetter than usual.

    As per Brutha Squawkster’s request:
Congress Less Popular than Cockroaches, Traffic Jams
“Congress did manage to beat out telemarketers (45-35), John Edwards (45-29), the Kardashians (49-36), lobbyists (48-30), North Korea (61-26), the ebola virus (53-25), Lindsay Lohan (45-41), Fidel Castro (54-32), playground bullies (43-38), meth labs (60- 21), communism (57-23), and gonorrhea (53-28).”
Well it is nice to know that Congress beat out an STD. Wait a minute. If my math is correct 19% of those people polled were undecided!!???!!!!! Is this the vast undecided “independents” that our parties always court to win elections? The people that never know who they are going to vote for until the get into the voting booth? How can you be undecided whether you like an STD better that Congress? I am gabber flasted.

    From Mother Jones magazine:

It was the kind of meeting that conspiratorial conservative bloggers dream about…..
By December, the Democracy Initiative’s ranks had swelled to 30 to 35 groups, Brune says. (He expects it to be 50 by the end of the winter.) Other attendees at the December meeting included top officials from the League of Conservation Voters, Friends of the Earth, Public Campaign, the AFL-CIO, SEIU, Common Cause, Voto Latino, the Demos think tank, Piper Fund, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, People for the American Way, National People’s Action, National Wildlife Federation, the Center for American Progress, the United Auto Workers, and Color of Change. (A non-editorial employee of Mother Jones also attended.)

But the most pressing issue right now for Democracy Initiative members is Senate rules reform. At the December meeting, attendees heard from Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Tom Udall (D-N.M.) on rule changes to curb the spiraling use of filibusters to block legislation. The use of the filibuster has exploded in recent years, and Republicans now block up-or-down votes on nearly everything in the Senate, requiring Democrats to muster 60 votes to conduct even the most routine business. Liberal groups in the Democracy Initiative want to fix that, and they used the December meeting to plan a coordinated push to urge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to rewrite the rules. Democrats have until January 22, when the window closes on easy rules changes, to get the reforms they want.

I just watched the NOVA show on dogs which was linkied yesterday. FASCINATING! What really interested me was that when they selectively bred silver foxes for temperament, and only allowed those with the sweet, non-aggressive disposition to breed, the appearance of the foxes started to change; there was variability in color, shape and size of the tail, etc. They started talking about that around the 36 minute mark in the presentation.

#16 Comrade Pyroski, from your linkie:

No it is about power and a total power over the people. There is a lot of desire to bad mouth the Tsar, particularly by the Communists, who claim he was a tyrant, and yet under him we were armed and under the progressives disarmed. Do not be fooled by a belief that progressives, leftists hate guns. Oh, no, they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not marching in lock step of their ideology. They hate guns in the hands of those who think for themselves and do not obey without question. They hate guns in those whom they have slated for a barrel to the back of the ear.
So, do not fall for the false promises and do not extinguish the light that is left to allow humanity a measure of self respect.

But what to call this movement? Whereas “gay and lesbian” was once used to lump together various sexual minorities — and more recently “L.G.B.T.” to include bisexual and transgender — the new vanguard wants a broader, more inclusive abbreviation. “Youth today do not define themselves on the spectrum of L.G.B.T.,” said Shane Windmeyer, a founder of Campus Pride, a national student advocacy group based in Charlotte, N.C.
Part of the solution has been to add more letters, and in recent years the post-post-post-gay-rights banner has gotten significantly longer, some might say unwieldy. The emerging rubric is “L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.,” which stands for different things, depending on whom you ask.

    Spindletop oilfield discovered
    January 10, 1901
On this day in 1901, the Spindletop oilfield was discovered on a salt dome south of Beaumont, marking the birth of the modern petroleum industry. Pattillo Higgins, the “prophet of Spindletop,” and others had tried for years to find oil on Spindletop Hill, but with no success. In 1899, however, Higgins hooked up with Anthony F. Lucas. Despite negative reports from contemporary geologists, Lucas remained convinced that oil was in the salt domes of the Gulf Coast. On January 10 mud began bubbling from a well that Lucas had spudded in the previous October. The startled roughnecks fled as six tons of four-inch drilling pipe came shooting up out of the ground. After several minutes of quiet, mud, then gas, then oil spurted out. The Lucas geyser, found at a depth of 1,139 feet, blew a stream of oil over 100 feet high until it was capped nine days later. The discovery of the Spindletop oilfield had an almost incalculable effect on world and Texas history. Investors spent billions of dollars throughout the Lone Star State in search of oil and natural gas. The cheap fuel they found helped to revolutionize American transportation and industry. Many of the major oil companies were born at Spindletop or grew to major corporate size as a result of their involvement at Spindletop, including Texaco, Gulf Oil Corporation, Magnolia Petroleum Company, and Exxon Company, U.S.A.

What has changed more over the last half century: The kind of guns currently available or the increased violence in American culture?
The abuse of the right to keep and bear arms is increasingly fueled by an irresponsible exercise of the right to speak freely. As we continue to lose perspective on the value of human life and offer unending opportunities for violent fantasies, should we really be surprised when they become reality?
All of us need to recognize that our rights come with responsibilities. Whether implementing safe gun ownership practices or deciding what exercises of free speech to support, we must learn, teach and exercise discretion. “Constitutionally protected” is not the same as “morally right” or even “reasonable.”

    Lies and damned lies

White House press secretary Jay Carney issued a factually incorrect response Wednesday to the White House petition to deport British-born CNN host Piers Morgan, wrongly claiming that Morgan, who has launched repeated televised attacks on the Second Amendment, is protected from deportation by the First Amendment.

Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto explained on Twitter the legal precedent that prevents Morgan from citing the First Amendment to protect his status in the United States:
“Your opinion is protected, your presence in the U.S. is not. See Kleindienst v. Mandel (1972),” Taranto replied to Morgan.
Taranto linked to transcripts from a 1972 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the U.S. Attorney General’s refusal to allow a foreign journalist into the United States did not violate the First Amendment. The case resulted from Nixon administration attorney general Richard Kleindienst’s refusal to grant a temporary nonimmigrant visa to Marxist Belgian journalist Ernest Mandel.

Because the Democrats are dedicated to thier base, therefore thier base is dedicated to them.
Republicans, OTOH, spend a LOT of time telling their base to STFU, we’re in charge, its going to happen whether you like it or not, and besides, you’re not doing the work we are, you ought to feel grateful that we’re working as hard as we do.
They also rely on a LOT of paid professionals who don’t really care who wins the election as long as there are people at the top of the Party who will tell thier base to STFU, we’re in charge, its going to happen whether you like it or not, and besides, you’re not doing the work we are, you ought to feel grateful that we’re working as hard as we do.
That way, the Party is deprived of dedicated FREE workers and they are forced to rely on the paid professionals who will advise those at the top of the party to tell thier base to STFU, we’re in charge, its going to happen whether you like it or not, and besides, you’re not doing the work we are, you ought to feel grateful that we’re working as hard as we do.

Had to write a snarky letter to an ex-tenant today. He has a background in law enforcement, and he threatened to charge Hubby and I for theft because of a mix-up on the electricity bill, for which we’ve reimbursed him already. He’s just wissed because he couldn’t prove we owed him the several hundreds of dollars that he thinks he’s entitled to. They (he and his brother) moved out owing us a little over a hundred bucks in rent, and they refused to pay us, so we took it and the late fees out of his security deposit – which he told us to do. He went ballistic when I sent him a check for $43, keeping $100 in late fees (he had the use of the money from way back in August, as part of a rent reduction while we calculated what we owed him). That’s when we got a hysterical email threatening to charge us with theft – for something we’ve already paid him for.
It’s not worth my time to drive down to Angleton to sit in a court and have it thrown out, and we might have to hire a lawyer since it’s a criminal charge he was trying to lay on us. I just sent him a check, implying that he and his brother were wussies (I had to drive down and spray wasp for them) and problem tenants (“of all the tenants to whom we’ve rented, you two have been the least able to take care of yourselves”) and here’s-your-check-have-a-nice-life (“frankly, you’re just not worth the effort”). For two big burly Mexicans, who started out as very nice tenants, they sure turned out to be major league PITAs. Especially when they didn’t get their way. Especially when we showed them the numbers and proved they were wrong. Man, they sure didn’t like that!
Like two year olds. I’m glad they’re gone. We have some awesome guys living in the unit next door to them. I hope they stay for a long time. They pay on time, never cause a fuss, and seem really, really grateful to have the unit.

    IMHO the answer is YES

Me too Mr Fish. However, the reality is that when they come for your weapons they make sure the odds are even. Say 10:1 against.
There was a time when I believed that our military would not fire upon the citizenry. I used to say on the whole most military men would not. Today i am not so sure. A law that was tossed out the window and now abused regularly is the posse comitatus act. While the act has been “amended” in such a manner that the National Gaurd can do what they do, generally the military cannot by law. However, there heen a precedent set calling out the military to do law enforcement duty, most military WILL follow orders.
As Sarge, Simple Simon and I have discussed here in the past we would go to an “unjust” war if so ordered by the Commander in Chief. My best guess is most in the military would too. Obama like it or not is the Commander In Chief and that is just the way it is. From this point I speak only for myself and NOT Simple/Sarge. If I was in the service today I would follow orders. I would not like it but I would follow orders. As sick as this sounds I was sworn to uphold the Constitution and going to war is in effect defending our President and PROTECTING the Constitution. This is the oath we take:

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

Now having said all that. The rules and my role have changed. I will defend my family AND friends and NEIGHBORS from what I believe is a tyrannical maniacal government. The gubment already has my number so I do not worry about speaking my peace. My position has been stated by me before so I wait, cause “it” is coming IMO.

  49. Tedtam Avatar

Does “defending the Constitution” come before “obeying the President”?

  50. squawkbox Avatar

The concept is order. Order in the military. It is a double edged sword. Somecday I will expound on the “So help me God” part of that oath.

  51. squawkbox Avatar

In a better republic than this democracy / socialist mess we have now, one assumed or hoped or believe that the orders of the President were in line with defending the Constitution. If you read that paper, that actually is the Presidents primary job.
But as I have said all to often, that paper is only as good as those sworn to uphold it. Now you know why I so often went Bat Processed Bugs crazy when I heard the word compromise in the course of governing our country. Compromise = ignoring the rule of law.
