Little known fact: being from the north country, Santa is actually an Inuit Indian. When asked why he wore a red coat, he replied “Totem Pole” and opened his coat.

The December birthday party Saturday was quite a success.
6 celebrants:
Son age 50
Daughter age 33
Grand daughter age 17
Grand daughter’s mother age 40 something
and 2 homeless people from the church age 66 and 55
I was up Friday night smoking 20 pounds of brisket, 12 pounds of ribs and 10 pounds of venison sausage. I quit counting guests at 43. Every one had a great time. Put the left overs in a 1 gallon ziploc. -
Good morning, Hamsterville! The OC pic is a gruesome sight.

This story seems a little bogus.
HEADLINE: Romney didn’t want to run for president, son says
In an interview with the Boston Globe examining what went wrong with the Romney campaign, his eldest son Tagg explains that his father had been a reluctant candidate from the start.
After failing to win the 2008 Republican nomination, Romney told his family he would not run again and had to be persuaded to enter the 2012 White House race by his wife Ann and son Tagg.
“He wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire… to run,” Tagg Romney said. “If he could have found someone else to take his place… he would have been ecstatic to step aside.“There were other well qualified people on the stage with him that his team wasted no time in savaging to prevent them from being the nominee; if he really did not want to be prez, why did he allow his team to behave in such a fashion as there were others there ready, qualified, and eager to take his place? Then one has to ask the question as to why he did not run against JugEars like he did against the Rs?

This is precisely why I will never apply for a CHL and why every weapon I have ever bought has come from private purchases.
The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun — a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so.
Data for all permit categories, unrestricted carry, premises, business, employment, target and hunting, is included, but permit information is not available on an individual basis.
To create the map, The Journal News submitted Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. By state law, the information is public record.
Putnam is still putting together its records and could not immediately provide any data. The map will be updated when that data is released. And with all due respect to everyone here I believe it is a foolish thing to advertise that you have a CHL or discuss just what weapons you do own in a forum such as this or in public settings. Even my closest of “friends” and “family” have no idea what I may or may not have. Part of my safety net is predicated on the knowledge that no one knows what I have or do not have and what I am capable of doing with what I do have.
Gots to go now the black helicopters are hovering closer and that black SUV just pulled up.
Have a safe and Merry Christmas y’all. And to all…….

And to the all of the Hamsters: Merry Christmas Y’all
Hope everyone has a great time with your family and friends. All the piglets and grand piglets will be at the Hogpound tonight. A tall glass of Kentucky’s finest should get me through. -
Merry Christmas Hamsters. Whether you celebrate tonight or tomorrow or both with families and friends, may it be delightful, comforting, and loving in remembrance of the blessings bestowed by the Lord, Who is the Reason for the season.
-
I’m back from my Dad’s house. We have a lot of stuff ready for tomorrow: marinara sauce and ricotta filling for the lasagna, eggplant marinating in it batter waiting to be fried, and cauliflower cut up.
I’m back home ahead of time, getting ready to go to midnight mass tonight, since I have to be back in Dad’s kitchen right after we open presents tomorrow morning. MIL will be bringing sticky buns, which she does every year since I told her that one of my favorite memories of Christmas as a child was smelling the cinnamon rolls and coffee that my parents would prepare every Christmas morning. We may have our issues, but she does have her gestures of kindness.
I may actually bake something to take to Dad’s tomorrow. I have all these pecans….
and I think I left my power cord at Dad’s house, so I may not be on for long, anyway.
In case I don’t make it back, I wish for each of you the blessings of the Christmas season. And may those blessings stay with you each and every day hereafter. -
#3 OletimerLin, It sounds like you put a lot of memories in the old memory bank, very good sir. 😉
#21 Tedtam, you go girl! I’m always amazed at your energy level.
Tomorrow, both my kids and their spouses are coming for Christmas and my wife invited my huntin’ buddy/wife and a couple more of our friends, so with their kids we’ll have about 16 people for Christmas dinner. I have a Honey Baked Ham and an Eddy’s Smoked Turkey Breast, I’ve already cooked the squash & onions and made 19 deviled eggs. We’ll also have butter beans, rice, bean casserole, au gratin taters and collard greens. Daughter is bringing okra that they grew and we’re going to deep fry it. The other folks are bringing rolls and pies and a fruit salad.
Did I tell y’all the “Life is good”
Merry Christmas to all you hamsters! I hope that y’all have a great Christmas,….and remember, we STILL have soo much to be thankful for. -
I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave New Year

Merry Christmas to you all and may you find what you wish under your tree.
May God Bless you and be safe, on this day and all others.
Remember those who will not be able to be with family today and pray for them. Remember the ones we have lost and let us also pray for them that they are looking down on us and are happy about the paths we have chosen. Pray for our BACA kids that they are able to spend this day with happiness and joy and without fear. I love you all and wish you a very merry Christmas from our BACA family to yours -
Good morning Hamsters. Nothing much has happened so far with the front. No rain here, wind steadily out of the south, mugly 67. Santa had a headwind coming here. Perhaps the storm with be delayed long enough for folks to attend church and get home safely.
Merry Christmas y’all. 🙂 Don’t let anything steal your joy. (Thank you, Mike Richards) -
We have our gift opening on Christmas Eve, a tradition from years back in the days when we were living in Madison and spent Christmas Eve with my folks and Christmas Day with spouse’s. They have long since passed, and spouse’s brother and wife are the only immediate family left, but in Wisconsin.
Mariposa kitty evidently knows how to shop Amazon, as she gave me two cat books last night, I Could Pee on This and How To Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting To Kill You. They are meant to be humorous–and they are. Mharper42 and Tedtam would enjoy them too.
The first is a book of poetry, including such gems as I lick your nose, which reads
I lick your nose.
I lick your nose again.
I drag my claws down your eyelids.
Oh, you’re up? Feed me.
The other is a book of cartoons by one author. Warning to owner, do not prematurely end the petting session. If you do, kitty will log the time and make up the deficit later (at night, in bed, on your nose). Sweet Mariposa has obviously never read either of these. -
Merry Christmas, Hamsters.

Good morning, everyone. Man, was I bummed to see we still have yesterday’s flasher up on the Couch. I’ll post again after I’ve had some coffee, I am just flat out running late. Have had one flurry of wind and rain since I got up, though.
-
Merry Christmas to all couch critters!
It lightning and thundered north of Ft. Worth from 1 am till about 6 this morning. It is still raining and is expected to change to snow this afternoon.
Blessings and peace to all of you. -
Merry Christmas All!!
The weather is frightful in Dallas and to the north/east. I 40 is shut down in Oklahoma.
I hope that most folks have got to where they’re going this Christmas. -
Checking the local forecast, I noticed the snow belt across the middle of the country is being called Winter Storm Euclid by some. This led me to an article on how weather.com is providing the list of storm names, but The National Weather Service refuses to use them. And an insurance man who suggests that it’s just fun to put a name on a storm.
“If we have to deal with a winter storm, it might as well be named, at least it might make having one a little bit more fun,” said Wagner.

Because the people with the money and the power in the Republican party did not want a Conservative candidate to win.
That would have threatened their power and their ability to make boatloads of money running campaigns whether they win them or not. They would rather be in second place on the national stage in order to preserve their spot in first place in the Republican Party. -

We’ve opened presents, eaten our cinnamon rolls, and had coffee. I am now getting ready to go to my Dad’s for lasagna, Italian sausage, and fried eggplant with family.
Sucks to be all of you! 😀
Seriously, a very, very Merry Christmas to all the denizens of the Couch. May the day bring you happiness and joy, and thanks be to God for the gift of His son. God bless us all!

To all of my online “family”:
Blessings to you on this most joyous of all occasions. On this Christmas I pray that you will find joy, love, and the peace that comes from knowing that you rest securely in the arms of the Savior who was born so long ago. Merry Christmas!!! -
So, we opened our presents, eaten breakfast pastries with coffee and hot chocolate and are now preparing to go to my brother’s holiday feast. It’s more Texan than Italian, Tedtam, but I don’t think it sucks too bad:
Slow Smoked Turkey
Virginia Ham
Grilled Bone-in Rib Eye steaks
Cornbread dress with venison sausage and pecans
Garlic mashed potatoes
Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Bacon and balsamic reduction
Green bean casserole
yeast rolls
Pies!! (Cherry, Apple, Pumpkin and Key Lime) -
May y’all have joyous and wonderful celebrations today, and every day.

It is way past time for this INSANITY to stop, would that it would stop all over the mid-east. Imagine a day when a woman can walk down the street and not have to be in fear of being raped, gang or otherwise. Imagine a day when wimminzes in the mid-east can be treated like humans, on equal stature with men.

The winds had died down for a couple of hours, but they’re howling again in Austin County.
-
Yep, we didn’t get any rain except one time this morning, but those 25 mph winds keep coming back. Anyone know if they got snow in Dallas today?
-
Big wind gusts started about 15 minutes ago, and the temp has been cratering. Was 67 the last time I looked, and now it’s 53–um make that 52, er, 51. We have a dust storm coming through borne on those gusts and the steady wind in between. Leaves, pecans, debris flying parllel to the ground. The haze is shrouding the setting sun in a golden cloak. It is not local dust–we aren’t that dry here. Maybe from the Panhandle or New Mexico, or points north?
The mares take shelter in the lee of the barn and are casting glances toward the house that say we want to go in the barn and get out of this. Ooops, down to 50–can watch it drop. A loud thump on the roof over the kitchen startles Mariposa in the garden room, and us too. A small dead branch off a red oak in front of the garage would be a likely source, as it now is on the ground next to the front porch. The wind noise is steady except for gusty punctuations, just as in a tropical storm or hurricane. Weather folks said this would be a rip snorter, and it is. Nothing in the rain gauge but a trace from this morning, and a gnat. Sun is just a big orange ball about to touch the horizon and surrounded by a bluish gray gauze.
The mares are in the barn now, all the north windows closed and the aisle doors too. Good thing we brought in loose items from the front porch and patio last night. They would be in the Brazos by now. Waiting for the sporadic power outages to begin thanks to blowing branches and slapping powerlines. Sun has slipped into the gray gauze, just a hint of pale pink above the horizon marks its leave taking. Just slid past 48 to 47. Gonna be an interesting night. Bundle up y’all. -
Already down to 43 here – finally making use of the large stack of wood I laid in the fireplace this morning……………

Just saw on the Ch. 11 news there’s a big grass fire in Katy. That is likely the haze we see out here and not dust. Hope it is contained. Some of the wind damage around the area is stunning. 44 and fallling.

Well Christmas 2012 is in the can. We had 14 1/2 people here, the 1/2 being the Marine’s daughter that turned 1 on Dec 1. We had Honey Baked Ham, Smoked Turkey Breast, butter beans, collard greens, squash, fried okra, green bean casserole, rice, taters au gratin, mac n cheese and two different kind of rolls. One of the ladies brought ambrosia (good stuff right there) and there were several pies and a cake. I hurt myself!

Merry Christmas, everyone!
We went out-of-the-box this Christmas and cooked a turducken from Hebert’s Specialty Meats on Richmond. Very tasty! -
#66 Hamous, I’ve been thinking of cooking one of those, is Herbert’s good? Pricey?

The snow let up around 5 this afternoon. I went out to get the ol’ SUV ready to drive to the hotel from my aunt’s house. I realized I forgot my ice scraper at home. I asked my uncle for one and he said he usually starts his car and lets the defroster do the job. He managed to find a small block of wood to scrape the ice off.
That was the fun part. On the three mile trip to the hotel, the guy in front of me started to fish tail, I started to fish tail, and a guy in s small car next lost control and slid into my rear door. Everyone is ok. I just hate that I will have to wait almost two weeks before I can start taking care of getting it repaired. -
I’m back home, fully stuffed with lasagna, garlic bread, dee-lee-shus fried eggplant, broccoli/cauliflower casserole (made with lots of parmesan cheese and olive oil-it’s way tastier than you’d think), caesar salad, and lots of homemade desserts and snacks. It’s rollin’ time, ‘cuz it’s a little hard to walk.
I spent hours yesterday helping Dad with the prep work, and today I was the first to arrive around eleven to assemble the lasagna and start some of the other stuff. I worked in the kitchen for about three or four more hours, and then sat down and let my sisters finish things. I had no guilt over not being in there. I sat outside with my sisters and significant others, in my shorts and Christmas t-shirt, crocheting a scarf for my niece and talking. The wind was blowing, but it wasn’t until after four o’clock some time that I changed into my blue jeans, and about twenty minutes later the full wave of cold hit and I had to run inside and get my jacket.
It was good to see my nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. I usually only get to see them for a little time at Christmas, and it’s amazing to see the change in them from year to year. My nephew has a 3 year old daughter and a 20 month old son, looking ever so handsome in his little suit. I was the only aunt that was able to hold the little girl, and she shared her doll with me, hugged me and kissed me on the cheek. The little boy, who has never seen me before, gave me THREE kisses right on the lips and a hug. That made my whole day!
I was sitting in my Dad’s bedroom with my baby sister and her little boy, who’s suffering from some kind of syndrome that affects his blood vessels. In rare cases, it can be fatal, but from the paperwork I saw, it will probably resolve itself over a period of months. In the meantime, he can suffer from abdominal pains, fatigue, fever, and muscle pain. Sis said it “goes up and down,” and I managed to catch him at a “good time” while he and his Mommy were playing Candyland. I sat next to them, watching and talking while I crocheted the scarf. The boy also suffers from some developmental delays, and I’ve spent some time counseling my sister on handling the schools and his program; he reminds me of my son. They were getting ready to close the game, and he pulled out a little Etch-a-Sketch and, turning the knob, moved the line across the screen. “You run out of time!” he said, and I fell to the floor, eyes closed. He started laughing, and my sister told him to tickle me, which woke me up. Knob again, and “You out of time!” Tickle again, but this time, I tickled him back. It was such a joy to see him laughing! We played like this for a while, and then I needed to go find a seat in the living room.
While waiting for presents to be distributed, I finished the scarf. Presents were handed out. My sister LOVED the bucktoothed bobble-headed hippo with the Christmas hat that I gave her (she collects hippos).
I got a call from Lovely, who is with her in-laws for Christmas. We had a good conversation. She is being treated well and is having a good time. It seems that my gifts to her mother-in-law and future sister-in-law were well received.
Lasagna, little kids’ kisses, and buck toothed bobble head hippos.

I was working a Compressor Station startup in York, Pa. in the early 90’s. The actual site was in Marietta and we stayed in York.
The commute to the site was a 17 mile drive and part of it was across the Susquahanna River Bridge. This is an old stone bridge with low clearance above the nearly mile wide river. We had a very hard early freeze one night and I began my commute the next morning and made it halfway across the bridge before I realized it was covered with black ice. The mist from the river floated up and froze on contact with the roadway.
I steeled my nerves and did not move the steering wheel or change speed. Everything was looking good until some yahoo came up from behind in a sedan at 20+ mph over the normal speed limit. He decides to change lanes to go around me and the next thing I saw out of my rearview mirror was this clown doing sideways aerial somersaults down the bridge. He nearly involved me in his automotive gymnastics routine, but somehow I escaped.
I got to the other side of the bridge and pulled off and shook for almost an hour. -
I was coming down Airport Boulevard, close to home, just after a heavy rain. There were still large puddles of water in the curb lane. I was in the inside lane when a yellow truck comes barreling past me. He hit one of those puddles, hydroplaned, and began spinning wildly all over the roadway. Fortunately, I didn’t slam my breaks on, but removed my foot from the gas and watched anxiously and the rotating vehicle came within ten feet of my front bumper, continued to spin, and actually bounced sideways over the curb and took a light pole in this passenger door. I pulled into a space between the medians and watched as he took a moment and then continued down the road. I think he was a security guard at the airport.
I also shook for a while before I could drive again. My knees were absolute jelly. -
Yikes, preparing the place for a cold night. Currently 35 with a 29 windchill. Spouse tells me our little weather station can figure windchill–didn’t know that. Outside water turned off, and we hope the sprinkler system control valves are mostly turned off. Spouse says something is catching in them…. Patio plants are all up on the porch, ones closest to the edge are covered in sheets anchored with bits of patio paving blocks. Plants in front getting the brunt of the wind are on their own–no way sheets will stay on them in this blast even with bricks holding them down. Pansies will be fine.
G’night all. Stay warm. -
I was driving about 40 in a 55 mph zone tonight. I saw this group of cars slowly catching up to me. It is unfortunate that they overtook me right on a bridge. The key as always is to not panic. I fish tailed a good four or five times, but I managed to keep the the front of the car in front of me. I even had the wherewithal to try and slowly steer/creep towards the right. I was trying to give the guy that hit me as wide a berth as possible.
When I called his insurance provider, he had already called it in on his own policy. Thank you Lord! I hope the rest of the claims process goes this smoothly.
Tomorrow I pick up the rental (all wheel drive of course) for the drive to Colorado. Do not worry though, I know enough to not be cocky and over confident just because all four wheels are turning. -
